The early Soviet avant garde were amazing in film, architecture, poetry and just redefining everyday life. Their work is fascinating and very good, especially in film.
It's difficult to imagine how two directors work to make such an exquisite motion picture. Beautiful compositions. Thank you.
THE GREATEST MOVIE ABOUT THE 1871 COMMUNE OF PARIS, WITH THE INCOMPARABLE MUSIC OF THE 22 YEAR OLD DMITRY SHOSTAKOVICH.
ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!
meraviglioso, una autentica delizia visiva e musicale, grazie
thanks for posting this, its important to keep stuff like this alive
STUFF ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????///
bella fantasia musicale!
this was really enhanced by Shostakovich ' s score. thanks for posting!
Without Shostakovich, this movie wouldn't be a masterpiece.
Die DVD ist in Deutschland nicht zu bekommen. Es lebe die Kultur!!!!!!!!!
Wow, what pretty Russian silent film actresses! 🇷🇺🎞️💖💗😁
Wonderful example of how, while Hollywood was cranking out Mack Sennett two-reelers & Glorida Swanson costume extravaganzas, Soviet director were creating an entirely new cinema, until it all went so horribly wrong.
Not in 1929. In 1929 Hollywood was making talking features and experimenting with color. The Soviets were in the stone age.
Hollywood was pumping out some pretty impressive work around that time. SUNRISE (1927), THE BIG PARADE (1925), THE WIND (1928), and THE CROWD (1928), to name a few.

1920's girls were so gorgeous
This is not Shostakovich's music. He told the director not to use his score until all the scenes cut by the Soviets were restored. That has only happened recently and the original Shostakovich score will be played tomorrow, a special premiere.
Will it be shown again with the original Shostakovich music because I don't think I can make it to The Barbican tonight?
This is his music, it's a reconstruction of the original manuscript held in the glinka museum, much like the restored piano version you mentioned but for orchestra.
Your logic is faulty. This is a silent film, so it doesn't matter what he told the director. It's a separately played soundtrack. The fact is that Shostakovich's score has been now recorded a number of times, and needing to have cuts to match the cuts that were made to the film does not mean that it's "not Shostakovich's music".
Elena Kuzmina as Louise was born in 1909, so she was 19 years old in that movie, since it was filmed in 1928!
No she was born in 1909, so she was 20
@@groupvucic2235 Thank you, I corrected her bio.
Isnt the movie 2 hrs long?
Until Soviet censors mutilated it, it was.
1:11
Anyone know the name of the piece at 1:07:15?
Got it. Tchaikovsky "Old French Song".
Interesting, with great action scenes, but pretty revisionist as far as the history of the Paris Commune goes. The Commune lasted only two months and was responsible for the destruction of a number of municipal buildings (resulting in the loss of almost every document relating to the birth and history of France and especially Paris) and the execution of 63 hostages by Communard leaders during the last week of May. Many of the Communard leaders fled the city as soon as the military started to attack. The Communards - at least their leaders - were anything but a peaceful lot.
It's also quite unfaithful to the Zola novel on which it was based.
