They used to play professionally but they grew out of that. All their lives their parents brainwashed them into this idea to just practise, practise and practise, they had enough of that so they’re done. I’m not saying what their parents did were wrong because it made them very successful, but at what expense? Their childhood. They were the literal embodiment of Arima Kousei. There are literal embodiments of Arima Kousei in real life. Your Lie in April is sad because what happened in the anime can and also happens in real life. How Arima Kousei became a prodigy because piano was his life. Why did he stop playing professionally? Because his mom died. Why did Brett and Eddy stop? Because they realised. Brett and Eddy are really smart and intelligent. Their parents made them smart and intelligent and they know too much. Just like what Thanos said: “Knowledge can be a curse”. Do you know what the literal literal meaning of the word Prodigy? Wasteful. So what does a person being a prodigy mean only literally mean? Exceptionally talented. The Latin meaning means something that’s bound to happen. So Latinally speaking, prodigal children are children where something is bound to happen, right? Child prodigies are children who are going to be famous. Edit: grammatical error and spelling corrections

Damn! Eddy's such an intellectual. When he speaks, he really make good points in a manner that no one would be offended. Especially in the part when he asked if gov't should allocate more funds in music/arts as general.
And also.. To a certain point, government funded institutions don't have the reputation of high quality. Yes, a degree of free education opens up the supply but the free market and competition is the drive that creates good quality.

I started piano really late, but I'm planning on double majoring because I love it so much. I was super surprised how supportive my mom was, but my dad thinks it's not a good idea because he thinks music is not financially secure.
Its some what true. Like so many Asian parents want their kids to be "successful" But because of all the economic issues and wars and ... They don't see music as a career, or even something that you can make money from. And they want you to be a doctor, or an engineer, or a lawyer. Cause these things are the careers that is needed the most in Asia. I really think they want what's best for us but they don't see the changes the world had during these years. Like Asia Is full of unemployed doctors
Lol as an Asian it was never occurred to me that music could be a “career” because how I brought up and the stigma around it. It always looked as a thing you do as a hobby or as a “side earning” when you have another stable job. Which kind of made me sad because I love playing piano, I love performing, it has always been some day dream for me to actually go around the world playing the piano classically but there’s no way I can do it now. People might say “it is never too late” but reality sucks man. Edit: Wow, I didn’t think I will get so many response and it’s actually endearing that so many people has been through and thinking the same thing as I did. You are not alone! I really appreciate all of the response and I’ll try my best to personally reply each of it with my own thoughts. It has been a really insightful and touching for me to read through the replies. I’m sure all of you meant well, however I’d like to say that I’m not saying this because I’m being pessimistic or “giving up” on my “dream”, I’d just like to point out how growing up, as a children and even as a teen it never crossed my mind that I “can” be a classical musician, I know classical musicians exist but it just never occurred to me that it is an option (does it makes sense? Haha) and I think a lot of people experience the same thing, thus making music career less approachable for kids (I mean, I even dreamed to be an astronaut when I was young and other “irregular” career-- but being a musician was never crossed my mind although I love playing piano) As I’ve already said in a reply below, I’m an engineer in my late 20s and I love my job. Although sometimes I can’t help but wonder how life would turn out if I’m a classical musician, as it seems so different as a life as an engineer. Sometimes part of me wishes I was one, when I went to classical concert and such (do you get it? Haha) I didn’t quit playing music altogether. I still do some small gigs and teaching young kids occasionally. Being a professional classical musician is just a day dream of me, something that I always wondered but not something I “have to” achieve. It just something that I keep dear in my heart. I wish everyone luck in your respective path that you’ve choose or wish to take. Best regards.
Nabila Ahmeidiati Another asian here. I too had musical training from an early age, but my true passion lies with the visual arts. I’m going to pursue my love for fine arts at university this fall (more likely spring 2021 at this rate...) and I plan on turning this hobby into a profession. 16:56 “How do you express through music if you don’t know what to express?” Daaamn that’s a great advice actually. I feel like it didn’t get enough attention 😄
@gJb 1 😁 It's common sense. But 'great' when the sense for it is not so common. Some (e.g. students) dont truly know unless told so by others (e.g. teachers).
Eddy seems like a really wise young person. His comments on the government and also enjoying life to be able to express what you’ve lived through your music seemed so mature.
Richy G Actually, all throughout the video, Eddy seemed super mature! And Brett too! I guess we're just so used to them messing around that we forget that they're really wise and experienced musicians.

She said, "Technically you're great, you can play the notes; you just need to live life more because you need to mature, experience life. And how do you express the music if you don't know what to express..." As a musician, this hit me HARD
this is why child prodigies often don't impress me or move me the same way that a seasoned pro does. Every moment of our lives has a feeling associated with it, sometimes very intense ones, and music is often something we associate with vivid memories. I just don't think a child, or someone who was sheltered, can express these feelings or feel them the same way. That's why talent is only one aspect of overall potential.
That was what my piano teacher always said to me and i never got what she meant until i quit the lessons and grew up... only later on i realised the meaning behind her words when i started to play and practice for myself and not only for my lesssons

I have so much respect for Eddy because he acknowledged that the government funding better music education wouldn't necessarily be the perfect solution some people believe it to be.
@@expression3639 The only reason I don't think it would be feasible to have "free" music education is bc I went to high school in a pretty poor area and my school couldn't even afford a reasonable number of buses due to overpopulation (and every time they'd build a new wing it would already be too crowded again), let alone fund better music education. I think there are more important things that need funding than music, especially in poorer parts of the US, and this is coming from somebody who plays oboe and tenor sax. It's expensive as hell and not fair to the people who can't afford it, but there are things that could benefit everybody that I believe are more important, like not being crammed 35+ to a class.
What about a "beginner vs professional" video with Brett and Eddy being the pros of the violin and all the other musicians who appeared in this video series as the beginners?
Effects I’ve noticed from doing music: Confidence Experience of being on stage Public speaking (as soloists performing you have to speak and present what you’re about to play) Working as part of a team Maths (as a bassoonist figuring out where I’m coming in after 250 bars rest) Patience (counting bars, long orchestral rehearsals) Focus Time management Language (as a singer lots of language learning but also as a musician in general lots of language bits here and there; Italian being a big one) Responsibility (the shame of forgetting your pencil for rehearsal can help with that eek!)
Conductor: Everyone, don't forget to wear a face mask during the rehearsal. Pianist: Sure. Violinist: Okay!! Harpist: Ok that's no problem. Saxophonist: Okay! ......Wait what?
I'd really love to listen to Eddy talk more about everything and anything he wants to. I've Asian friends, mom is a mathematician and dad is an engineer. I joked that their kid who played the piano might go into music. Was pleasantly surprised when the reply was "wherever he's happy."
Very interesting to see the stigma surrounding music as a career in different cultures. Kind of explains their drive... if everyone around you is telling you its not a good career, you have to REALLY love it to continue. It's a self selecting process, and then of those few, they all believe they have to be the best if they want to have a shot at making any money. This doesn't only apply to music, but I thought that was interesting.
Phoebe: “We can’t expect to be taken seriously, or we can’t expect for people to understand why music is so important and share our music to everyone, if we don’t value ourselves enough to ask for proper payment” On point!! I’m sold as well
I like it when musicians gather together like this and just talk. Like when they did mukbang with Hilary Hahn. I mean, I have several perspectives of life from the sight of an academician, an athlete, a public speaker or other figures but musician perspective is kind of foreign to me even though I learn instrument. So, listening to their conversation with Hilary opens a new door in my life and I do see my life differently now. And today, I get a lot of new inputs as well! When the noti popped up, I'm actually excited because I've been wondering the same since I discovered TSV, wondering how their duet brings goosebumps which I never have before listening to any music. So, my conclusion is not all musician thinks the same, as it all depend on their journey through the music. But, they can achieve togetherness and such chemistry when they put music as the midpoint and go around the locus. Thank you for the video! Thumbs up, love from Malaysia👍💖
I liked Alex's last point as a counterargument to what Eddy said. While I do agree with the advice Eddy got in some ways, I see that if you do take that too far, then you're never really relaxing, and it's all work. That's a real good point :) I will say tho that music has done great things for relationships. I honestly wouldn't speak to my brother if we both hadn't played classical instruments (and watch TwoSet videos!)
I disagreed with his point actually. I don’t see living life and expressing it through your music as work. Obviously, no one should always thinking about their work or school, but people do things in life to enrich other parts of it. I feel like we are in fact always at “work,” even when we are relaxing because, if we’re luck enough, we’re at work to make our lives the most enjoyable that they can be whether that be though career, relationships, or other endeavors. I’m sure I’m biased though because music is the main way I express myself and for me, without the “living” part of it, it’s not music at all
Totally one of your best videos to date! The mild slide away from the usual "comedy" really takes us viewers back to why you guys have Twoset Violin in the first place. It was really really nice to get the chance to kind of 'pick the brains' of today's classical musicians :)
While the entire world is quarantined as a result of COVID-19, this video made me feel slightly less alone. Mad respect to TwoSet and and all of the musicians who participated.
This might be one of my favourite TSV videos yet. I love everything that they do, but I also love when they share their insights in a serious way with us. I’m not a musician, just a hobby piano player, and this was fascinating to hear so many different perspectives from different musicians, as a non-musician.There were some beautifully nuanced thoughts here that were genuinely interesting to listen to and consider. This was brilliant, thank you Brett, Eddy, and everyone who was involved.
Can someone tell eddy, that his way of expressing himself is perfect? I feel like he always finds the right words.. and btw, his hair looks soooo good!! And not to forget, that Brett should be praised for staying loyal
8:22 as a pianist i very agree with Alex, maybe i would even have put myself more on the disagree-side. In my experience, pianists seem to be able to stand a lot more pressure and concert anxiety than other musicians, who maybe are more used to play in groups or in an orchestra, so that they get more nervous when playing solo. I´m not a professional concert pianist (yet ;) ), and i also don´t really want do be, but over the years, when i was performing, i learned to control that feelings that stood in my way to a good performance. In my opinion, getting nervous just makes it worse and it doesn´t help your concentration at all. Last year, i had the opportunity to play Debussys 'clair de lune' in our every-year school concert in our townhall, and i wasn´t nervous at all. Not only that, i even enjoyed it so much, i completely ignored the audience and just concentrated on the music. It is very important to me to not worry about what mistakes could happen, but to look forward to having a nice and fun concert. Maybe you will think of that when performing yourself ;) just have fun! Greetings from Germany
dhtp music yea it’s like super stressful, because when you play a wrong note in an orchestra, it’s fine, because the other instruments will cover it up, but when you miss a note on piano, everyone notices .
I used to play piano. Maybe I was so bad because I literally can’t even talk with people in only somewhat comfortable with without a stutter and it’s even worse when I do any type of presentation. (Fml i take a class that basically social skills cause of this)
""You guys are artists anyway, you do it for the art. If you wanted money, you wouldn't be doing music anyway, right?" I was totally nodding along because the exposure question is really relatable. Every time I hear someone want me to design a magazine or a logo for 'exposure' makes me want to flip a table. I find this a big problem for those who work in the arts, be it musically or visually.. etc... Many of us spend years honing our craft and spending money to fund materials or classes. Just like how one would never try to pay their local barista in exposure after ordering, why would you ask to do so for an artist/musician/designer...etc?
I work in theatre and make costumes. The amount of times people ask to make something for free is crazy. Like who’s paying for materials then?🙄 exposure isn’t paying for that.
I never studied art/design, but I did so many posters for my mum's theatre group's performances, that I learned to do it reasonably well. One of my mum's acquaintances asked me to do 5 posters for some sort of festival because "we are on a tight budget, we can't afford a professional". I told her that I can take a third of what a professional would have asked, and she got very mad and yelled that I'm crazy and trying to exploit people. She never considered that with my lack of experience, it would take me 8-10 hours to do 5 decent posters and there is no reason I would choose to spend my rare free time on this for free.
Anna Karo my mom did the same. Asked for 10 super elaborate, specific dance skirts, and expected me to do it for cheap, she yelled at me when I gave her the discounted price, which was like $400. Ummm..who’s paying for the 50+ yards of fabric I need??? They just don’t get it/:
Oh yeah. I play guitar in a cover band with 6 other people (lead vocalist, drummer/vocalist, lead guitarist, bassist, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist, and keyboardist/vocalist, and a dedicated sound/lighting tech). I figure we bring around $20000 worth of equipment to put on a show, and we can easily $1000 a night playing out. We do a couple of free performances a year for charity events (and those are fun as hell because they're usually the biggest crowds we play to), and those events are typically "just bring your instruments" shows, so it's a lot less work. We're in a position where venues are asking *us* to play, so yeah, we're not really looking for "exposure." True story: a woman asked me (I typically don't deal with booking because I'm the quiet, shy, nervous, asocial band member...who plays shredding solos in the middle of the dance floor...) if we'd play at her business event. I told her we would if we were all available that date and we would ask $900 for a 2 hour performance. She took offence to it and said she couldn't pay us, but she could hook us up with some radio promotion (we don't do radio promotion for our shows since we typically play at venues with regularly scheduled live music, or we play our party cruises that always sell out). I said we don't play for exposure, and then as an afterthought, I asked her what her business event was for. She said it was for graphic design and marketing, and that she was a graphic designer. So I asked her if she'd be willing to make us promotional flyers for that year's scheduled events for our website. She immediately realized how bad it was to ask established professional artists to work for "exposure."

Eddy and Brett - you guys are paid to play beautiful music on your tours and in your videos. You *are* professional musicians. Just because you don’t play in an orchestra doesn’t mean you’re not pros. Don’t be so hard on yourselves - you haven’t given up on professional musicianship, you’ve just gone to a different road of professional musicianship.
It’s amazing that alongside that, you entertain, teach and motivate others to play music as well. Be proud of what you’ve become!

‘My family was supportive of my career choice:
Brett and Eddy being the only ones in the disagree area: *asian situation right now :(*
Kimmy Chan so uh... what are you arguing for?
@Kimmy Chan That's literally what happened to Brett & Eddy though...
I started piano really late, but I'm planning on double majoring because I love it so much. I was super surprised how supportive my mom was, but my dad thinks it's not a good idea because he thinks music is not financially secure.
Its some what true.
Like so many Asian parents want their kids to be "successful"
But because of all the economic issues and wars and ...
@@ainazaghdam8622 Yes, I understand that, and i fully agree. I only chose it because I truly love the piano and I would like to pursue it.
Edit:
Wow, I didn’t think I will get so many response and it’s actually endearing that so many people has been through and thinking the same thing as I did.
Haha) and I think a lot of people experience the same thing, thus making music career less approachable for kids (I mean, I even dreamed to be an astronaut when I was young and other “irregular” career-- but being a musician was never crossed my mind although I love playing piano)
As I’ve already said in a reply below, I’m an engineer in my late 20s and I love my job.

I’m going to pursue my love for fine arts at university this fall (more likely spring 2021 at this rate...) and I plan on turning this hobby into a profession. Chase your dreams or you will die *miserable* (that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea). What is the point of life if not to live? Nothing is too late. You may not be able to travel the world in it’s current state, but plan big and you will win in the long run. DO IT OR I WILL *VIRTUALLY COUGH ON YOU*.

She said, "Technically you're great, you can play the notes; you just need to live life more because you need to mature, experience life. And how do you express the music if you don't know what to express..."
As a musician, this hit me HARD
this is why child prodigies often don't impress me or move me the same way that a seasoned pro does. Every moment of our lives has a feeling associated with it, sometimes very intense ones, and music is often something we associate with vivid memories. I just don't think a child, or someone who was sheltered, can express these feelings or feel them the same way. That's why talent is only one aspect of overall potential.
This even hit me as a writer and was honestly a relief to hear I didn't even know I needed to hear it
That was what my piano teacher always said to me and i never got what she meant until i quit the lessons and grew up... only later on i realised the meaning behind her words when i started to play and practice for myself and not only for my lesssons
I think this applies to a lot of professions, that's such a powerful perspective... Gonna try to keep that one with me

God yes, I thought all of them would ignore it and say "agree" but it went well
I remember wanting to play the flute and the guitar as a child. If music school had been available and free I sure as hell would have attended it.

Yes, he is a remarkable violinist; additionally, Eddy Chen’s speaking voice is emotively euphonic.
Phoebe: “We can’t expect to be taken seriously, or we can’t expect for people to understand why music is so important and share our music to everyone, if we don’t value ourselves enough to ask for proper payment”
On point!!

I will say tho that music has done great things for relationships.

Can someone tell eddy, that his way of expressing himself is perfect? I feel like he always finds the right words.. and btw, his hair looks soooo good!! And not to forget, that Brett should be praised for staying loyal
me: "hey what about social dis--"
me: *reads description*

@akanerosechan yess they even separate eddy and Brett
What is going through your head?
We all know how Brett & Eddy met but I still couldn't control myself from "aww"-ing along with the ladies at the 10:10 bit 🥰
I really like how Eddy explains his perspectives.

Put on a mask will you? Damn such impertinence
(Fml i take a class that basically social skills cause of this)
Can't agree more! It is very stressful that we cannot hide our mistakes
I used to be in a dance company and you would not believe how many times we heard that. I still low key froth at the mouth just at the memories...
We're in a position where venues are asking *us* to play, so yeah, we're not really looking for "exposure."
True story: a woman asked me (I typically don't deal with booking because I'm the quiet, shy, nervous, asocial band member...who plays shredding solos in the middle of the dance floor...) if we'd play at her business event.
How come I feel like Brett and Eddy roasted themselves in the introduction… Well I mean, they are still playing professionally, but just in a different way!! So please don't roast yourselves Brett and Eddy and we love you!!🙈🙈🙈
Pianist be like:
-I don't like moving
Lol
Eddy: I have found deeper relationships doing music than anywhere else.
(Eddy moves to AGREE)
*Eddy: For me, it's obvious. I wouldn't have met Brett if it wasn't through music and math tutoring.*
My heart.
OKAY ON ANOTHER ANOTHER EPISODE OF ME FAWNING OVER EDDIE: HE IS SUCH AN ARTICULATE PERSON THAT I DON'T THINK I'VE HEARD HIM STUTTER OR MUMBLE THAT MUCH WHEN HE'S GIVING OUT HIS IDEAS AND BOY DO I LOVE INTELLIGENT MEN 😍
I couldn't agree more. I'd love for both Brett and Eddy to do a Ted Talk about music and UA-cam as a full-time career one day. Eddy's articulation and how he expresses his passion is mesmerizing. And Brett makes some valid points also.
Even though his and Eddy's perceptions and experiences differ from one another, it would be a very interesting talk
Go to eddy’s youtube channel, you can see him speak about violin 20+ minutes
@@braveheartalice I'm sorry... What is a Ted Talk ?
17:31 Eddy: "What's R&R?"
Spoken like a true Ling Ling
I was low key waiting for the question,
*"Do you believe geniuses are born not created?"* to be asked
Props to the editor t add their name EVERY TIME INCLUDING THEIR INSTRUMENT. Haven't seen that many places and I have the worst memory.
I just love to listen to Eddy talk. He just looks so wise, so profound, so lost in his thoughts... I just love that he brings another perspective on matters that I wouldn't even think about otherwise.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Yeah. You gotta love Eddy.
How do you even dare to post a comment with that english though?? (seriously though, I'm not a native speaker either, but maybe you should be more confident; your english seems fine to me).
@@muesli_snipes hahahah yeah, you are right, I should be more confident about it
Are you brazilian? Every single brazilian (including me) say that lol
@@sarahvelten_ yes, I'm Brazilian haha
Bio:
Eddy Chen: *makes videos*
Brett Yang: *use to play professionally*
I’m not sure if they are taking the piss out of what they do or not but they are genuinely talented stan them pls
I’ve always noticed how eddy has really great insight. He’s very mature for his age
What? Isn't he in his late 20s? I would hope you have insight by that age! If you don't, you never will...
Then half of his tik toks are him throwing it back
LMAO
Lol yeah I'm such a fangirl I always agree on what he says
The way Eddy expresses his thoughts and speaks with perfect tone and pauses tho
I, being a person who always check the thumbnail before the title, and then the channel name, saw this video.
Me: "wow, no way, jubilee uploaded a video like this?"
Me: *accidentally saw the channel name*
Also me: *happiness noise* *clicked immediately*
Same, I was so surprised seeing that Jubilee made this and had Brett & Eddy in it
Sama dooong wkwk, auto like sebelum nonton
*twoset writes their names on the description box*
Me: who's Eddy Chen?
Also me five seconds of thinking hard: OWH.
hahahahaa lol
This the happiest I've seen Bret. And when he's drinking bubble tea:)
And with Hilary Hahn hehe
I still think that when all of the musicians there speak, they are expressing themselves as well-educated people, who can analyze stuff. So, I don't think you're that isolated from the world ;)
Well you should hope they would know how to analyse. Musicology
