My great grandfather was Garrison artillery,his brother was a driver.Both survived, however their other brother was unlucky.He suffered shell shock as an ambulance driver in the RAMC. He went back to serve on a hospital ship which hit a mine just off Le Havre, returning for more casualties. All were lost. Hearing the voices is quite remarkable.

I think he may have meant like stair rods , ""The bullets were like rain, raining like like stair rods""
