Keith said on the Jimmy Fallon Show that Connection off of Between the Buttons was were he and Jagger came together and spent the next few years writing a few Hits, come on folks, you do like That Satanic Album, then they gave us Begger Banquet, and on, jus sayin ¡😎¡
my top 10 rolling stones albums: 10.12X5 9.Between the Buttons 8.Emotional Rescue 7.Aftermath 6.Tattoo You 5.Beggars Banquet 4.Sticky Fingers 3.Some Girls 2.Let It Bleed 1.Exile on Main St. what do you think of the list?
John Heaton my top ten Rolling Stones albums 10 - Aftermath 9 - Some girls 8 - Satanic majesties 7 - 12× 5 6 - Let it bleed 5 - Tattoo you 4 - Goats Head soup 3 - Exile on main street 2 - Beggars banquet 1 - Sticky fingers
John Heaton My favourite track on Sticky fingers is Moonlight mile . This track gives the album a great finish . Moonlight mile is also my favourite slow song by the Stones .
Aftermath definitely deserves to be in the top 10. Maybe even the top 5. It is definitely superior to Emotional Rescue. Their Satanic Majesties Request deserves a top 10 placing, too. Maybe Tattoo You, too.
1 Let it Bleed 2 Beggars Banquet 3 Goat's head soap 4 Sticky Fingers 5 Exile on main Street 6 It's only Rock'n'Roll 7 Black and Blue 8 Aftermath 9 Between the Buttons 10 Love you Live . the very best Ever
1-Beggars Banquet 2-Exile 3-stick Fingers 4-Let it Bleed 5-Aftermath 6- Goats head soup 7-Tattoo you 8- Some Girls 9- It´s Only rock n roll 10- Blue and lonesome
I figured everybody's Top 5 would include some configuration of Aftermath, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street. For those who are new to the Stones, those 5 are your next albums to listen to.
Re exile on main St great Album, I gulped at the £77.87 price tag for deluxe edition though! anI dont play vynal. Can it be obtained cheaper with 2nd disc Great reviews though. Would be interested to know your thoughts on top 10.Rory Gallagher Albums
+Supersonic Shakermaker Sorry for the late reply. I kind of lost interest around the time of Voodoo Lounge to be honest, it is over long and lacking in classic material. Even Steel Wheels the one before had a couple of classics. To me Some Girls (1978) is their last masterpiece and other than that 1968-72 was their peak.
John Heaton in a top fifteen list for Stones albums I would have said 15 - Now 14 - Steel wheels 13 - It's only rock n Roll 12 - Out of our heads ( uk) version 11 - Dirty work
I agree with some of your picks. I have Let It Bleed at number 6 as well. I am curious what would be your choice if you did not include that compilation album ? Which, for the record I don't think you should have. Really robbing another legit studio album on the list ( Like Tattoo You ??)
1.Exile on Main Street; 2.Some Girls; 3.Sticky Fingers; 4.Let it Bleed; 5.Tattoo You; 6.Aftermath; 7.Out of Our Heads; 8.It's Only Rock & Roll; 9.Between the Buttons; 10.Rolling Stones
It took a few listenings before I started to enjoy Exile on Main Street. It might be my favorite, though I love Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed. Do enjoy Voodoo Lounge and Steel Wheels.
A general question. Very few seem to like anything after "Tattoo You". I've seen that statement plenty but hardly any reasons to why. They done several albums now.. What is bad about them? For me The Stones has done lots of strong material but also quite much medicre or weak.. All since day one. I can't really say that some of the earliy albums is any better than the later.
My list: 10. Black and Blue 9. Aftermath 8. Between the Buttons 7. Voodoo Lounge 6. Beggars Banquet 5. Tattoo You 4. Sticky Fingers 3. Let it Bleed 2. Some Girls 1. Exile on Main Street. Great video!
I wish that I liked it more....by the way, how does "Aftermath" rank for you? I don't think that was on your top ten. I like that album, but I'm accustomed to the US version which starts off with "Paint It Black" and ends with "Going Home" - no "Out Of Time" though unfortunately.
Aftermath is good although as you say Paint It Black is not on the UK version. I think even the High Tide album has a different track listing in the US. Gets tiresome trying to work out UK vs. US versions. Witness The Beatles US albums but I guess I'll do a separate video on that as most of them are quite annoying. On the plus side they do include several B sides which is good but 12 tracks was short on value vs 14 in the UK.
Greetings from Australia John, just discovered your posts, having some fun going through them. I agree with your top 2 Stones albums, personally I would've had Let it Bleed at 3. Some disagreements, you said Sympathy had 'slightly dodgy lyrics', I rate them as perhaps Jaggers best. Can't you hear me knocking is just "ok" ? Mate its among the best thing the Stones ever recorded & quite possibly the best 'jam' captured on tape!
dave crowson That comment surprised me too! It’s one of their greatest tracks. The opening few seconds of Nicky Hopkins alone are incredible. Funny that he’d rate the much more tedious “Respectable” as a favourite.
my top 12, without the earlier and later ones: 1. Their Satanic Majesties Request 2. Tatoo You 3. Exile on Main Street 4. Between the Buttons 5. Undercover 6. Let it Bleed 7. Beggars Banquet 8. Sticky Fingers 9. Emotional Rescue 10. Goat Heat Soup 11. Some Girls 12. Aftermath
I'm only 36 (in fact it's my birthday today) and haven't ever been into the stones but I got heavily onto the Beatles over the last 3 years and collected all their albums and played em all to death. But I'm now considering doing the same with the stones (IF THEY GRAB ME THE SAME). What do you recommend to start myself off +John Heaton ? Plus do you think its true that they copied the Beatles in certain ways at the beginning and for a few years to ride their success ways? Obviously after that they really got it together and become unique to themselves and went on. But just for a while? By the way thanks. As ever peace ✌ and love ❤
Great to hear your opinions! My favourite is Aftermath. Some great tracks. Under My thumb, Lady Jane, Doncha Bother Me, Think and Flight 505 just to name a few
Good review. Replace Black & Blue with It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, and Big Hits (no compilations on top ten lists, that's cheating!) with Tattoo You and I'm right there with you! Please do a top ten Elton John list!
Yes thanks Claude, Hot Rocks is also a first class compilation. I just chose 'High Tide' as it covers the early period well. Hot Rocks covers two songs from Sticky Fingers which are enjoyed better on that album, plus the stuff from Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet I prefer on those albums. But you're right all those late 60s singles are on Hot Rocks. I don't remember the compilation until much later so that's probably why I didn't choose it. I don't much like compilation albums in general compared to the original albums.
The ‘Black and Blue’ cover art is excellent work done by Ethan Russell! I liked it so much I bought original negative photos, along with Keith’s ‘Patiece Please’ photo, from Mr. Russell! He is a wonderful gentleman! Best money I’ve ever spent!
Steel Wheels had a couple of good moments but a lot of it I found too generic and dull. Terrible lead off single in 'Mixed Emotions' in my opinion. 'Slipping Away' is my favourite.
My Stones minutes of mine pleasure album ratings: 1. Black And Blue (41 1/2) 2. Some Girls (34) 3. Let It Bleed (31) 4. Sticky Fingers (24) 5. It's Only Rock And Roll (23) 6. Exile On Main St (19) 7. Beggar's Banquet (15 1/2) 8. Bridges To Babylon (15) 9. Tattoo You (10 1/2) 10. Aftermath (10) 11. Out Of Our Heads (9 1/2) 12. Between The Buttons (9) 13. Satanic Majesties Request (9) 14. 12 x 5 (6 1/2) 15. Goat's Head Soup (6) 16. December's Children (6) 17. Emotional Rescue (4) ...that's it!
Good list John. I agree with you that the early albums had to much filler and hits collection would best represent this period but I prefer Hot Rocks to High Tide. I understand your point that HR's includes later songs but if just take the first two sides of pre Beggars Banquet material it's still a more completer round up of their early years. And 'Get Your Ya Ya's Out' has to be in the top ten someplace, easily their best live album, especially the newly released deluxe version that includes five more Stones tracks. Good list John, I have added all them to my Apple Music queue. Cheers.
Solid rundown John. I don't know why but Sticky Fingers never grabbed me as much as Exile or Beggars Banquet. Do you know who baked the cake on the cover of Let it Bleed?
Some Girls # 1 I think. I know its all over the place with different genres...but that's what the Stones were and encapsulates their career best on one album more than any other.
Was just looking at the cover to Big Hits with Brian Jones standing in front of Jagger. Had to laugh at Jaggers expression for having to stand behind Jones. Maybe I'm just reading something into it, but it looks like a storms a brewin and poor Brian doesn't see it coming.
Yeah that one was unlucky not to make my top 10...it has some great moments...favourites would be Time Waits For No One, the title track, Dance Little Sister, If You Really Wanna Be My Friend. Til The Next Goodbye and Luxury are also decent. I am personally not too keen on the first two tracks which kind of puts me off the album as a whole. But miles better than their latter day work for sure, in my opinion.
my wild card is undercover, from the album cover to songs like the title cut and all the way down, too hot, tie you up has a great feel to it and from black and blue to undercover its a really productive eight years. tattoo you side two is brilliant also. so undercover and tattoo you would be on my top ten inching out between the buttons and the compilation which is for casual fans of radio hits more then the deep cuts on an album. that's the only one I wish you would replace with a studio album. your point is dead on but just think it should be studio albums listed. number two and number one are perfect choices. steel wheels is my least favourite. between a rock is pure radio friendly filler, mixed emotion has good riffs but cheesy lyrics. thanks again john. Syd, using his wife Sarah's notebook to comment from like always. sorry if you thought it was her but her tastes aren't worth printing. lol sorry honey...... put the knife down dear
+Sarah Sydlowski oh dear you wont enjoy my undercover review then! agree with side 2 of tattoo you....regarding high tide and green grass i find their early albums are a bit inconsistent...beggars banquet changed all that of course...so i love the compilation covering 63 to 66
Its only rock and roll is one of my favourite as well, in that ive loved thst album, from the start, im surprised that these days it doesnt get more attention, also it brings back memories for me,1974.
You kind of missed mentioning a little ditty called Midnight Rambler on Let it Bleed? One of their BEST songs ever. Which puts it minimum in the top three.
Actually it says a lot about your lack of musical knowledge. First off, the reviewer is wildly off base for reasons too numerous to mention here. However, even if he were correct, there is no rock and roll band in history with 10 outstanding albums. Not The Beatles, not Led Zep,etc.,etc. Maybe Dylan, but we're talking rock here. In fact, most bands disappear before #10 arrives. Hendrix, Cream,...
Very good list John. Here's mine. 10. Bridges to Babylon. 9. Steel Wheels 8. Tattoo you 7. It's only Rock and roll 6. Aftermath 5. Some Girls 4. Emotional Rescue 3. Sticky Fingers 2. Voodoo Lounge 1. Exile on Main street
What is interesting to me is so many people have Beggars Banquet as one of their favorites but they haven't listened but one damn song on the album and they are missing out on songs like Dear Doctor, the greatest county song written, or Prodigal Son, Factory Girl and the hard rocking Stray Cat Blues.
John, I got away from the stones for a number of years and missed Exile On Main Street. It has always been on the top of everyone's list so I bought the LP's but have had a hard time getting into it. I have never listened to Big Hits and it has been years since I listened to Emotional Rescue. I'll have to put them on.
Just glad to see you only rated UK versions, US versions not rubbish just wrong, Let it bleed deseved to be higher, but glad to see you rated Between The Buttons as it's highly underated, It's not my favourite but i play it the most, go figure. Cheers
A lot of fun as always. I would note that “Winter” on Goats Head Soup has one of the great Mick Taylor solos. Don’t agree with putting any greatest hits albums on this list because The Stones are one of the top 3 bands ever and don’t need a greatest hits album to justify them. A lot of fun as always though. Thx
If I were to include compilations, maybe The London Years would be at the top, what a singles collection they had. Other than that Sticky Fingers is my favourite, Let It Bleed close, then Beggars, Aftermath, Goat Head Soup, Between The Buttons. Emotional Rescue (it sounds so good, same as Tattoo You) is along with Black and Blue the ones I listen to the most these days, maybe along with Exile. And those early days, their first record is legendary. So you see I love these guys :)
I love them all except Dirty work and Steel wheels. Voodoo Lounge is a great album too imo. Good to see Giats Head Soup and Some Girls are becoming classics more and mire as time goes by, as at the time reception was far from anonymous, most diehards only living by the exile era.
Fun list, thanks. 1. Get Yer Ya Yas Out 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Beggars Banquet 4. Exile on Main St. 5. Some Girls 6. Goat's Head Soup 7. Between the Buttons 8. Let it Bleed 9. Tattoo You 10. It's Only Rock and Roll
Always interesting to hear your comments. For me Exile is #1, Sticky Fingers is #2 and the Mick Taylor Stones were when the band was at their top form (although, for me, "Goats Head Soup" is only so-so) I would've included "Aftermath" and "It's Only Rock n Roll" in my Stones Top Ten.
So you're doing this for the benefit of Mr. Kite.

Glad to see Sticky Fingers on top. It was always my absolute favourite; a tad disappointed at the rating for Let It Bleed.

“Between the Buttons” is probably their most underrated and overlooked great album.
Keith said on the Jimmy Fallon Show that Connection off of Between the Buttons was were he and Jagger came together and spent the next few years writing a few Hits, come on folks, you do like That Satanic Album, then they gave us Begger Banquet, and on, jus sayin ¡😎¡
That album sucks for the most part . A couple years of ok tracks , The rest of it sounds like it was recorded in a trashcan

I just started getting into the Stones but my favorite is Voodoo Lounge. How does that rank for you.

Even Steel Wheels the one before had a couple of classics. To me Some Girls (1978) is their last masterpiece and other than that 1968-72 was their peak.
John Heaton yeah, now that I have listened to more Stones I can see that this wasn't their best work. Thanks for the reply!
John Heaton in a top fifteen list for Stones albums I would have said
15 - Now
14 - Steel wheels
13 - It's only rock n Roll
12 - Out of our heads ( uk) version
11 - Dirty work
A dear friend had me listen to emotional rescue. I spent a couple days listening to it. It’s excellent
Enjoy your reviews! What do you think about doing a Beatles v.s. Stones comparison review covering their first 12 albums (UK)?
It's amazing how everybody's ear is different, I don't agree with most of what you consider bad songs
I agree with some of your picks. I have Let It Bleed at number 6 as well. I am curious what would be your choice if you did not include that compilation album ? Which, for the record I don't think you should have. Really robbing another legit studio album on the list ( Like Tattoo You ??)
Whats the song playing in the background
A very odd critique of Let It Bleed. Then you had it ranked number 6. I’m totally confused.
i love about half of this album…. when it’s good it’s absolutely brilliant!
My Late Dad's favorite song of the Rolling Stones was the song Miss you
1.Exile on Main Street; 2.Some Girls; 3.Sticky Fingers; 4.Let it Bleed; 5.Tattoo You; 6.Aftermath; 7.Out of Our Heads; 8.It's Only Rock & Roll; 9.Between the Buttons; 10.Rolling Stones

It took a few listenings before I started to enjoy Exile on Main Street. It might be my favorite, though I love Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed. Do enjoy Voodoo Lounge and Steel Wheels.
Thanks Martin. Highlights elsewhere but 1968-72 was the peak for me.

What about Aftermath and Rolling Stones, Now? I know the latter has a lot of covers, but it is a great album, often overlooked.
My list: 10. Black and Blue 9. Aftermath 8. Between the Buttons 7. Voodoo Lounge 6. Beggars Banquet 5. Tattoo You 4. Sticky Fingers 3. Let it Bleed 2. Some Girls 1. Exile on Main Street. Great video!
Dissapointed with Let it Bleed-arguably one of the greatest albums ever. I am unsure if you really appreciate the Stones.
I wish that I liked it more....by the way, how does "Aftermath" rank for you? I don't think that was on your top ten. I like that album, but I'm accustomed to the US version which starts off with "Paint It Black" and ends with "Going Home" - no "Out Of Time" though unfortunately.

Greetings from Australia John, just discovered your posts, having some fun going through them. I agree with your top 2 Stones albums, personally I would've had Let it Bleed at 3. Oscar W. Rabbit Yep, Can't You Hear Me Knocking is great. Less Jagger, more jam is preferable.
Monkey Man TEDIOUS?!? I've never heard such drivel!
dave crowson That comment surprised me too! It’s one of their greatest tracks. The opening few seconds of Nicky Hopkins alone are incredible.
Funny that he’d rate the much more tedious “Respectable” as a favourite.
I never much cared for Monkey Man myself
I love that song
Hi John, do you have Their Satanic Majesties Request?

Aftermath has always been my favourite: I love Under My Thumb, Lady Jane etc.
Brown Sugar is on Sticky Fingers.
Under my thumb is absolutely brilliant!
Artful Dodger oops sorry didn’t mean that

Sticky Fingers
Let It Bleed
Beggars Banquet
Goats Head Soup
Great to hear your opinions! My favourite is Aftermath. Some great tracks. Under My thumb, Lady Jane, Doncha Bother Me, Think and Flight 505 just to name a few
Good review. Replace Black & Blue with It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, and Big Hits (no compilations on top ten lists, that's cheating!) with Tattoo You and I'm right there with you!
Please do a top ten Elton John list!
"Undercover" is the most underrated Stones album ever. An eclectic, nasty, punky mix with alot of balls. Should be in the top ten.
underrated but not top 10
Where’s Aftermath???
My favorite is Get yer ya yas out ! followed by Some Girls and the excellent High tide and green grass.Probably the best compilation album I know of !
You included a compilation album. Why not "Hot Rocks". Was "Hot Rocks", not released in the UK. Is it a North American thing?
Yes thanks Claude, Hot Rocks is also a first class compilation. I just chose 'High Tide' as it covers the early period well. Hot Rocks covers two songs from Sticky Fingers which are enjoyed better on that album, plus the stuff from Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet I prefer on those albums. My top 5 Rolling Stones
1 Sticky Fingers
2 Aftermath
3 Beggars Banquet
4 Some Girls
5 Exile On Main Street
High Tide & Green Grass may as well be an album anyway since it is mostly non-album singles. No shame in counting it.
For me it's Exile on Main Street at number 1 and Black & Blue at number 2.
The ‘Black and Blue’ cover art is excellent work done by Ethan Russell! I liked it so much I bought original negative photos, along with Keith’s ‘Patiece Please’ photo, from Mr. Russell! He is a wonderful gentleman! Best money I’ve ever spent!
I like your selections, John. I'm not sure what would make my top ten, but I love two of their later albums, Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge.
Steel Wheels had a couple of good moments but a lot of it I found too generic and dull. Terrible lead off single in 'Mixed Emotions' in my opinion. 'Slipping Away' is my favourite.
she's hot I meant john!!
Nice try John. These lists are fun but you are way off on some of your choices. No compilations with a band as prolific as the Stones.
Absolutely right. Let it Bleed deserves a better rating (Monkey Man "monotomous"? Can't Always Get What You Want "too long"? Come on...).

...that's it!
Cheers.
Am I the only one that has It's Only Rock and Roll as the best?
It’s a great album but at the time as with goats it got bad flak, totally undeserving
whats the song behind?
I HAVE THE VERY BEST OF THE ROLLING STONES 1964 - 1971 ON CD,ALL GREAT CLASSIC SONGS
Solid rundown John. I don't know why but Sticky Fingers never grabbed me as much as Exile or Beggars Banquet. Do you know who baked the cake on the cover of Let it Bleed?
the Beatles LET IT BE!
Sorry for the late reply. It would be good to know but I don't know the baker....unless it was the baker from Camberwick Green :- )
Robert Huges io
Delia Smith?
I would never think of The ‘Between The Buttons’ cover being reminiscent of ‘Beatles For Sale’. Because it was taken outdoors?
Can't You Hear Me Knocking is just ok!
My Top 5 : (1) STICKY FINGERS (2) LET IT BLEED (3) EXILE ON MAIN ST (4) BEGGARS BANQUET
(5) AFTERMATH
Some Girls # 1 I think. I know its all over the place with different genres...but that's what the Stones were and encapsulates their career best on one album more than any other.
Was just looking at the cover to Big Hits with Brian Jones standing in front of Jagger. Had to laugh at Jaggers expression for having to stand behind Jones. Maybe I'm just reading something into it, but it looks like a storms a brewin and poor Brian doesn't see it coming.
will wagner he was jealous for sure.
Always jealous of Brian......
I'm surprised no mention of _Now!_ in the comments. Flawless album.
Where do you rank Satanic Majesties, John?
I love it's only Rock n roll to be honest
Great to see Black and Blue get a mention.
What are your opinions on Their Satanic Majesties Request?
it’s ok...couple of stand out tracks especially two thousand light years from home
Rolling Stones, Greatest Rock n Roll band of all time
Coming Down Again is one of THE best Stones songs ever!
Agree. The only weak track is Mr. D.
¿ Tatto You John Heaton ? ?¿?¿?¿?
You kind of missed mentioning a little ditty called Midnight Rambler on Let it Bleed? One of their BEST songs ever. Which puts it minimum in the top three.
rolled gold is an even better compilation in cd it has tracks not included in lp version
Why no Flowers?
Aftermath?
It says a lot about the Stones that we had to get to the top 5 before we get to the ones that aren't mixed bags!
9. Steel Wheels
8. Tattoo you
7. It's only Rock and roll
6. Aftermath
5. Some Girls
4. Emotional Rescue
3. Sticky Fingers
2. Voodoo Lounge
1. Exile on Main street
I agree Let It Bleed is a very uneven record. I am 100% in agreement with John on that album. His critique is spot on.
Thanks Will. Emotional Rescue is undervalued in my opinion.
The stones compilations are good; high tide and green grass, through the past darkly, made in the shade, hot rocks
Great list. The Rolling Stones - Best Rock Band owned the 60’s. I would put Aftermath high on the list. Love the passion and insight of the presenter.
Fun list, thanks.

Yep. Pretty much my top ten as well.
