Orthodox Jews shouldn't be forced to enlist. Adults shouldn't be forced to work: no forced labour. It also doesn't seem sensible to try to force adults to work on other grounds, as if their spirit isn't in the work, they probably won't be effective workers. The Catechism says that in times of war, citizens should defend their country, and that if their conscience doesn't allow such, they should take up some alternative service such as working as medics. However, the Church also believes that people should not be forced to work (shouldn't be enslaved to work), and so the Israeli government should respect this and not force Orthodox Jews to work, neither in military service, nor in alternative works. However, it may be permissible to place a special tax on Orthodox Jews in respect to their not helping with the war effort, so long as it is just and fair taxation in proportion to the burdens their non-help places on the State in the context of the burdens the rest of society places on the State, and also so long as those who cannot afford to pay, are not forced to pay (they can instead be granted loans to help them pay in such cases).
