Even as a New Yorker myself, I think almost all of us New Yorkers can recall the time when we were shocked to learn that New York City is NOT the capital of New York. For some of us, we learned this as very young kids. The unlucky ones learned it at a little bit older age in an embarrassing scene where we kept insisting it was New York City while everyone else in the room pointed at us and laughed.
Spaniard here. I learnt that a lot of time ago, while watching an old 50's B&W movie about a couple going to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. Since that's a place everybody has heard of, when talking to a foreigner it's easier to explain that New York state goes from Canada border at Niagara Falls, to the ocean coastline at New York City. However, also movies can be misleading since it's very usual that they mention New Jersey which is just at the other side of Hudson River, so many local europeans I met thought that NYC belonged to New Jersey, since they were ignoring that some New York state even existed at all!!!
I see you're growing and learning with every new video. I'm also motivated by this and want to learn at least one more language other than English and Hindi(native). I'm Just bit busy in studies for now but I'll give my time to this from now on.
Hey Ryan! Since you know Bahasa Indonesia, you might also be interested in learning Bahasa Melayu. It's pretty similar except some different slang, accents etc but it's actually not that far off. It's very similar.

Its up to Niagara falls (and the great lakes, everybody can see on a globe) to New York City, next to Massachusets, where Boston is, next to Pennsylvania, where Phily is... And there are Connecticut, New Jersey (you heard in "every" movie also) and so on... The fact, that the State is really big and not only Long Island and Manhattan shocks people... And Albany is right in the center of all. ;-)
