I'd be very interested in a power rankings on the 70's. I'm an Islanders fan and am super curious where you would put them. Didn't win a cup that decade but still had multiple trips to the 3rd round and took teams like the Broad Street Bullies to the limit. Won the regular season points title in 78-79 before being upset by the Rag$ in the semi finals. Isles could have beaten the Habs that year in the finals if not for John Davidson.
There is no chance they would have beaten the Habs in the 70s, stop kidding yourself. The Canadiens in the 1970s may have been the greatest team ever assembled in hockey ( they won 6 stanley cups in 10 years for a reason)

The '79 Isles team had basically everyone who mattered except Goring, which is why they had a better record than the Habs. JD played a phenomenal series and knocked the Isles ego down a peg, which, it turns out, only helped create the monster that was the Isles starting the next year.

@@danielkrall6501 I'm a big 1970's Habs fan. Those Montreal teams were awesome however I think the Islanders in 1979 would have beaten Montreal in the finals. The Bruins should have knocked off the Habs in the semifinals. The Islanders in 1979 had the Habs number. The Islanders had beaten Montreal 3 of 4 games in the regular season.

Embarrassingly, I didn't become a hockey fan until around 2011 so I really appreciate all of the content covering past happenings. How the Stanley cup playoffs unfold are not representative of the season played. That's one thing that makes the playoffs so great. Do you have any better ideas? I know he is open for suggestions. He has plenty of his own as well

I've loved these videos, I did something similar and I totally agree that when it comes to power rankings over time, you just have to take out any subjectivity. It's hard to balance regular seasons and playoffs as well, or was for me anyway. Excited to see more!

Also I was thinking "Hope he mentions that run with Jacques Demers in '86 and the Monday Night Miracle.... Oh wait, hope he doesn't mention Saskatoon" Then I was sad. So many good memories from the 80's Brian Sutter, Bernie Federko, Mike Liut, Some great seasons. Nope, gonna focus on my absolute worst, scariest, most gut wrenching moment as a Blues fan. LOL - So it goes.

Well philly was the only team to take the oilers to 7 games in the finals so that should tell you something. Ps: I'd put the islanders over the Oilers myself but I can understand the argument for edmonton.
@@RoamHockey it's about the entire decade. The isles never got out of the second round after losing in the finals. The isles are my team, but the Oilers were the better team over the decade.

I know it doesn’t count, but prior to the Islanders run of 4 straight, they had also made it to the 3rd round in 4 of the previous 5 years. In a 10 year stretch, they made it to at least the 3rd round 9 times. Fewer teams, money wasn’t an issue yet, etc, etc, but that’s damn impressive. It all started only 2 years after getting a team too, which the city got as sort of a throw in along with Atlanta, when the NHL was competing against the WHA. The Islanders and Flyers were the Vegas of the 70’s.
I would normally argue with the order of your #1 and #2 teams. However, in NHL history have seven players from a Stanley Cup champion team ever left and played for another franchise and won another cup?? All hail the 1993-94 NY Oilers.
I won't bring up the 19 consecutive series wins because expansion diminishes that argument to a certain degree but being the only team other than the Montreal Canadiens to win the Cup in 4 consecutive seasons certainly tips the the scales to the Isles. At worst they should be 1 and 1A and the head to head ended at 1-1.

As you mentioned in the previous video, if Mike Bossy's back didn't give out this probably is a very different decade. That being said, Long Island politics screwed the Isles because they never really allowed the Isles to really make money on the arena. And a lot of promises about mass transit and repairs were broken. I'm glad that they will now have their own arena in Belmont, and it'll shift a lot of attention in the NHL.

Quebec has the state of the art arena, they have a rich owner in waiting, they have a tv channel that will fork in millions and they have fans for 2 teams. All they miss, is an eastern team that will go down and need a relocation. Looking at Florida? Columbus? Carolina? Covid-19 will take it's toll on a few franchise so who knows when they'll be back.
Quebec backed out of the process when Vegas got in. Quebec is not in the running for an NHL team, especially with a Canadian dollar at around 68 cents US.

I disagree with 1&2. The Islanders won 4 consecutive cups. They were in the finals 5 consecutive years. Edmonton was absolutely a powerhouse in the 80’s. But they didn’t have 5 straight appearances. They didn’t have 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Granted in 87 the Islanders didn’t get beyond the 2nd round (I think) but The Easter Epic....anyway I am partial to the Islanders but I think they should be #1 on this chart. Also a side note if Pelle Lindberghe (sp?) hadn’t died who knows what Philly would have been???? Lindberghe & Hextall.....😮😦😮

To be honest though I still think top to bottom the islanders were the better team. They won 4 straight cups and 19 straight playoffs series. That's insane.

@@matthewdaley746 by the time that 84 series rolled around the isles had a LOT of wear and tear on the tires. I'm actually impressed they got back to a fifth straight cup. Tells you how good that team was.
Think the Oilers playing in that powder puff division defaults them at #2. Sure the Flames gave them some trouble. Just the Caps and Flyers were winning divisions and leading Cup winning Islander teams in terms of division points at the end of the season.
Maybe just an all-time franchise power rankings, with an adjustment for number of seasons so that a good team like San Jose doesn't get penalized because they've only been around since the 90s?

Flyers may be higher if the 1980 Bullies didn't take so many foolish penalties and allow a Finals record 15 PPG. A game 7 at the Spectrum would have been tough for the Islanders to win.
If you can't justify doing any power rankings beyond the 80's, which is a shame because there are many hockey fans who like history, could you do one on the greatest dynasties, both natural(Habs, Islanders and Leafs) and not natural(Oilers)?
I agree with your top 5 except I thought the Flames would be 4 and Flyers 5 only because the Flames won a cup. The North Stars 7th? I was a huge North Stars fan and now a Dallas Stars fan. I don't know if I would have them ahead of the Blackhawks. Not saying it's wrong, just my opinion

Again, if you don't include the second half of the decade I have no argument. As this list is about the entire decade, their fade in the second half does affect their standing.

Well if you werent in edmonton or long island it wasnt that easy. Sure less teams but the good teams were far more stacked then teams today. Less teams = less dilution of the talent pool.
The Islanders are FAR from the greatest dynasty. The Habs won 5 straight, and 4 straight on more than one occasion I believe. Henri Richard had 11 cup rings, as a player!
I've said the islanders and late 70s canadians are top 2 for me. I cant qualify the canadians from the original 6 era as they only played 5 other teams. You gotta have more opposition then that to qualify
@@Sweeptheleg83 that's one way of looking at it. The other way is, that during the original 6 only the best of the best got a spot on an NHL roster. The Oilers and the Islanders dynasties took place in an era when the talent pool was far more diluted. Making it far easier to build an elite team if your management was good at spotting talent early, and your ownership had the cash to keep a team together.
Not so sure about that, they were totally gassed in the 1984 Final, and, they didn't beat a team other than the perpetually-underachieving pre-2018 Capitals in the Playoffs until 1993.
@@matthewdaley746 they were gassed because of the Oilers which had Wayne Gretzky, and Mark Messier just to name a few of their players. I'll give you that they didn't win much after 1984, but that's kind of given because the core got old and we all know what happens when core players get old.

Both the Isles and Oilers won four Cups and lost one final in the '80s, so they're even there. The Isles, however, won 19 straight playoff series, something no other professional North American sports team had ever accomplished, nor has accomplished since, and that "tiebreaker" should have put them at #1.

Islanders need to be #1 on the list not only b/c of their 4 straight Stanley Cups, and making it to the finals for a 5th straight year in a row, but b/c they won 19 straight playoff series in a row. No other team has come close to that. That should put them over the Oilers
The Oilers won 4 Cupsin the 80s and had a Finals appearance in 1983. They won 5 in seven years. They also were better overall throughout the 80s than the Isles who struggled after their last Finals appearance.
Have to agree with THG on the top 5 teams. The Oilers are talked more about for the 80s than the NY Islanders. Around 82-83 the Oilers started coming to be a great team and of course the rest is history. The Islanders just fell off the map after 84. So no, Oilers are #1. A great list.

I have some very fond hockey memories from this decade. To be an Oiler fan then and alive to see Gretzky's greatness is something I'll never forget.

I watched a lot of Isles in the 79-84 years,we were able to pick up a channel out of NY on the old antenna(remember those)lol-I was a huge Bossy fan.

I disagree with 1&2. The Islanders won 4 consecutive cups. They were in the finals 5 consecutive years. Edmonton was absolutely a powerhouse in the 80’s. But they didn’t have 5 straight appearances. They didn’t have 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Granted in 87 the Islanders didn’t get beyond the 2nd round (I think) but The Easter Epic....anyway I am partial to the Islanders but I think they should be #1 on this chart. Also a side note if Pelle Lindberghe (sp?) hadn’t died who knows what Philly would have been???? Lindberghe & Hextall.....😮😦😮
Unlike the Islanders the Oilers dynasty was forced to end (Coffey Gretzky trade).
Really sucks we never got to see a Gretzky led Oilers vs lemieux's penguins. That would have been an entertaining final.

They still won five Cups despite losing key pieces, if they hadn't traded them, their depth would have soon been completely gutted.
@@matthewdaley746 oh I think for sure edmonton would have won but i do think Pittsburg would have won a couple games. Plus they were both offense first teams so it would have been a track meet. Though I'm more of defense first guy I could throw that aside to watch Gretz and mario go back and forth.

To be honest though I still think top to bottom the islanders were the better team. They won 4 straight cups and 19 straight playoffs series. That's insane.

Think the Oilers playing in that powder puff division defaults them at #2. Sure the Flames gave them some trouble. Just the Caps and Flyers were winning divisions and leading Cup winning Islander teams in terms of division points at the end of the season.

I agree with your top 5 except I thought the Flames would be 4 and Flyers 5 only because the Flames won a cup. The North Stars 7th? I was a huge North Stars fan and now a Dallas Stars fan. I don't know if I would have them ahead of the Blackhawks. Not saying it's wrong, just my opinion

Well if you werent in edmonton or long island it wasnt that easy. Sure less teams but the good teams were far more stacked then teams today. Less teams = less dilution of the talent pool.

I've said the islanders and late 70s canadians are top 2 for me. I cant qualify the canadians from the original 6 era as they only played 5 other teams. You gotta have more opposition then that to qualify
Toe Blake's Canadiens team from 1956-1960 was the greatest dynasty, it won five Cups in a row, that will never happen again.
@@Sweeptheleg83 that's one way of looking at it. The other way is, that during the original 6 only the best of the best got a spot on an NHL roster. The Oilers and the Islanders dynasties took place in an era when the talent pool was far more diluted. Making it far easier to build an elite team if your management was good at spotting talent early, and your ownership had the cash to keep a team together.

Not so sure about that, they were totally gassed in the 1984 Final, and, they didn't beat a team other than the perpetually-underachieving pre-2018 Capitals in the Playoffs until 1993.

Islanders need to be #1 on the list not only b/c of their 4 straight Stanley Cups, and making it to the finals for a 5th straight year in a row, but b/c they won 19 straight playoff series in a row. No other team has come close to that. That should put them over the Oilers
The Oilers won 4 Cupsin the 80s and had a Finals appearance in 1983. They won 5 in seven years. They also were better overall throughout the 80s than the Isles who struggled after their last Finals appearance.

Have to agree with THG on the top 5 teams. The Oilers are talked more about for the 80s than the NY Islanders. Around 82-83 the Oilers started coming to be a great team and of course the rest is history. The Islanders just fell off the map after 84. So no, Oilers are #1. A great list.
