  • In this video, I show you the highly anticipated Gevi 20 Bar Home Espresso Machine. This machine is in direct competition with the Delonghi Dedica, and even offers a feature that the Dedica lacks (stay tuned for that!). Let's see how this machine does for pressurized and non-pressurized espresso, as well as milk steaming. Let's also consider the build and aesthetics of this economical machine. Check below for some product links.

    This was a great and honest review. I really appreciate your attention to details, good and bad. Your take was spot on. This machine was designed for end users who are grabbing sub-optimal beans off of the shelf, using $30 grinders and want something stronger than drip coffee. Let me say that there is no problem with this. Drink what you enjoy, and if this isn't your up to individual higher standards, then you aren't the target demograph. I feel machines like this have a place in the market for individuals who have a budget to meet, but want to make a latte at home for a fraction of the price of their local barista. I think it's great that you are reviewing a full range of machines, keep it up!

    Excellent review! We just got one for our vacation home. Like you mentioned all plastic and very light weight makes me concerned about longevity. We shall see. But I must say the coffee tastes surprisingly good for a $100 machine.

      Hello there!
      I’m guessing that your beans are probably too old - or in other words roasted too long ago.

    I was on and off using this machine and with the CAPFEI portafilter. I still liked it better than the pressurized that came with it. I wasn't getting much crema with it and espresso beans. I do use a WD tool, leveler, and real tamper, plus a screen. I recently discovered that using a light/medium Costa Rican single-origin coffee that I hand grind that I found that I do get some crema and I much prefer the brighter taste. Just enough acidity to give a fruitier taste. I will say that even without getting crema with my espresso beans (medium quality) once dialed in the taste was still good. I used to use flavors and coconut sugar along with cream. It's been a switch going to black coffee. Now, I'm just having the Costa Rican either as a Lungo or as an Americano. I seem to get a larger ratio in a shorter time than general wisdom says I should. However, the end product is what I like. So setting aside the conventional logic of time, output, and, roast, I'll just enjoy it and quit trying to match up what "wisdom" says I should be getting and doing.

    Excellent video. I must say I do not see me going to all that trouble to pull a mediocre shot. With the knockbox, if it has a nice rubberized bar you can hit it at speed but no force behind the blow, allowing the portafilter to bounce of the bar. The puck of coffee will come flying out whole every time when you get the hang of it.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 місяців тому +1

      I’ll try that. I find of all machines by the way, DeLonghi knocks out the cleanest and easiest.

    • @TomJones-tx7pb
      @TomJones-tx7pb 11 місяців тому

      With my Flair 58 I can express all the water and run air through the puck. It knocks out better than my DeLonghi. The thing I like about knocking out a whole puck cleanly is that it is an indication that I did good puck preparation. Before I got puck preparation down pat I could have uneven density of coffee and compacted areas (especially when trying coffee levelers that you spin) and when I knocked out the puck it could break up along these differences. @@TomsCoffeeCorner

    Nice video as always. I'm not sure I would rec that model (GECME022-U) when for 50 bux more (GECME418E-U) you can get SS body w manometer and regular steam wand. Can we see the inside, if you get a chance?
    I do like that 51mm Capefei PF. I went thru a lot of trial and error trying to find PF from AMZ. 51mm accessories seem limited. ikape has some stuff you could link as well.
    It's interesting to see the competition between Italian brands. I'm really impressed by how much power the lil machine has. 18 bar probably explains why I kept blowing out pucks when I started using it. I think mine does a preinfusion tho?
    Thanx again for all of your videos, I learn something new every time. I couldn't find the ESP v. Opus vid tho?

      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi there! Yes, the other Gevi with the manometer is probably a bit better from a feedback standpoint and also the steam wand will be nicer. But I expect the result in the cup will be the same.

      I defer to your judgement. I did have a bunch of temp probs and getting a decent puck was always a challenge but I kinda miss the volumetrics when I'm half awake. My Gaggia is great but I need to be wide awake to use it. Is there an espresso machine / alarm clock? /jokin@@TomsCoffeeCorner

    The biggest problem of this machine is there are no compatible bottomless portafilters that seal and keep the pressure. There are 2 on Amazon that appear to fit, 1 of them you linked, but they won't seal and would leak water everywhere. The original pressureized portafilter seals properly, and actually produces a better brew. Other than that, I love this machine.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 місяців тому

      Are you sure the Capfei wouldn’t seal? I’ve had good luck with their equipment, and this PF gets good reviews on Amazon. But either way, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the machine.

    • @acefr8816
      @acefr8816 11 місяців тому

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner Yes, I actually bought and tried it. While it does fit this machine, it does not seal it properly and keep the pressure during brewing, water would splash out from the top of the portafilter and the resulting brew has no crema.

    I found a compatible open bottom potrafilter on Amazon when I searched for the specific model name. One problem though, the hot espresso sometimes drips down the handle of the portafilter as I'm pulling a shot. What causes this?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  8 місяців тому +1

      It might be escaping between the basket rim and the gasket. I'd recommend the PF from Capfei - I've had good luck with those.

      Yes, I believe that's exactly what's happening and it seems to be related to either grind size or tamping pressure. I'm playing around with both.

      I don't think it's a must. But it depends on whether your new basket's depth will fit in the original portafilter.
