Watermelon. Or like a panda with a mean face, or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday morning where you wake up and it's raining. Well, I like him more than hard bread.
I'm probably in the minority who actually felt bad for Mamimi. The stuff she's been through and the toxic way she was coping with everything. I'm happy that she managed to move on and do her photography work.
i read somewhere that the reason its on mimi's cigarette is because the writer heard it and he thought it was the perfect saying to describe someone who has given up on life. when you look at her from that perspective it adds yet another deep focus to such a great but weird show :)
JOE WEADON FLCL certainly contains a lot of symbolism, but I don't think I entirely agree with your reasoning. This girl(forgot her name since I watched awhile ago) was one with severe dependency issues. Her relation with Tosuka was most likely very one-sided, and once he left she used naota to fill the void. Even after that she was still looking for someone to lean on, and thus she had cantido-sama and the robot dude as god. She kept falling into this same trap over and over again, and thus the saying "never knows best." Eventually she does figure out that the only way she will grow up is by learning how to stand by herself, and that's why she goes solo by the end of the show. Anyways that was my interpretation. But yeah this show has got a lot of imagery and its open to multiple interpretations, each of which is justifiable.
i think the point is that before Noata's older brother Mimi had nothing to live for, until he saved her from a fire at her school that she started because of what little hope she had. once he is gone she falls into the same despair and even though she absolutely tries to constantly replace him especially with Noata, its never enough. It might not be that she gave up not on life but on the Idea of progressing forward in life and growing up. that would explain why she doesn't want Noata to grow up at all or try. this can be seen best in episode 4 when the phrase "swing the bat" is said several times.Swing the bat means trying and chasing your dreams it means change and just about everything adolescence is about. Mimi says early on in the episode "Noata is not the type to swing the bat' meaning she believes he will remain as stagnant as her and not leave her behind like Noata's older brother, making Noata the perfect substitute.
Flcl wasn't deep, it wasn't shallow. It was as turbulent as we feel our lives can be and was just as sweet and too the point. It made no sense yet was perfectly clear in what it ment. It was about understanding what maturity is. And since there is no solid answer to that we never see a solid plot. In a way flcl is the existential answer, it just seems right even if what is right is something you can never explain.
I would love to actually talk to you, that was one of the most eloquent explanations of one of my favorite things of all time. Legitimately touched my soul with that one.
It established mood and it's absurdly was a break from it kept the audience around. The Eyebrow guy was the true hero of the story despite being a slobbering simp for the secondary protagonist who literally wanted to cause planetary genocide inorder to receive the power of interdimensional being of cosmic proportion.
Ima steal a quote from maxor "At first i thought that Yakuza was all over the place, that it was somehow messy. But now i realize that life is fucking messy, and thats okay" Swap yakuza for flcl and i think its a pretty accurate sentiment
MrBlaziner and telling me to grow up makes no sense, im taking a second look at a piece of art, and making interpretations based on the plot and characters.

Or like a neighborhood dog that barks and chases you, or seeing a car crash near the bus station, or the scent of wednesdays when everyone mows their lawn , or a roadtrip to the family down south where you wake up in the car and put your shoes on to go inside and go back to sleep... The image of a highway illuminated by a single pair of headlights, rolling towards me on a lonely midnight drive going nowhere. The image of a beautiful summer day, perfect weather, nothing but free time, and I just lay in bed unable to work up the motivation to do anything. The image of a boy and girl, looking at each other, eyes connected and moving closer. Their lips meet as the guitar begins, and that singular moment is so perfect that decades later they can still remember it and smile. I fucking love this song.

I swear to God I've heard this song before. What's one that sounds like this? It's so nostalgic but I don't know what it is, because I think I've never heard this song before....
In a way, this song sort of reminds me of Pink Floyd's song "Mother". Considering the themes for both that and FLCL, perhaps The Pillows got some inspiration from Floyd?
Watched this show when I was 13 and sort of took for granted the importance of your youth conveyed by Naota and FLCL. I'm 18 now, and I think I'll live my teens to the fullest. We only have 1 life after all
naotas brother always knew best. thats part of the underlying truth. cantti is a representation of his brother and when they fuse naota is achieving maturity and rising to the challenge. in his mind just like his brother would do.
kakashi101able that is kind of a broad question, um, well lets see, it's really humid. the buildings are all really close together. there are many vending machines outdoors but very few trash bins. pretty much everyone gets around by train, they're are noisy cicadas everywhere and if you are white they will treat you like you came from outer space.
kakashi101able besides the humidity and the fact that lliterallyno one could speak english, it was a great trip and I'd do it again. and yes it was expensive.
that is remarkable, how did you know that I did that? but no, capsule hotels are fun but they aren't worth traveling to the other side of the world for. it basically feels the same as being a little kid in a fort.
