Did it make me feel things? Yes.
This hits different after the last episode, the entire sequence with this song was perfect and beautiful, Sonny Boy is a masterpiece. I'm really sad that it has come to an end, I'm gonna miss this anime so much.

The band is ‘toe’ for anyone who wants to listen to more of their music. They’re pretty much the godfather of Japanese math rock.
I looked it up but couldn't find any vocal tracks
@@MintTuesday yeah they’re a primarily instrumental band but they have some vocal tracks like “The Latest Number”
@@MintTuesday After I came to know that Math Rock is actually a genre of music I went right away to Spotify to hear their official Math Rock playlist and I realised it's about instrumental brilliance more than anything here. So, yeah, you'll be missing the vocals if you wanna hop into this genre. But personally I like songs without vocals because that seems to soothe me when I need it with the absence of human voice that'd drill into my head otherwise. (If they sing in Math Rocks, they sing with a soft voice and that's another charming feature about it.)
@@MintTuesday as @TragicLight said they're mainly instrumental but i can list you some of they tracks that have vocal tracks. First list are sung by the band's vocalist Yamazaki Hirokazu and from the second are guests:
Yamazaki Hirokazu:
- Song Silly
- F.A.R
- The Latest Number
- Goodbye (New Sentimentality version)
- Ordinary days (kind of vocals at the end)
- Boyo (kind of vocals at the end)
Guests:
- Tsuki Kake
- Goodbye (For long tomorrow version)
- Commit ballad
- Say it ain't so
I've to say that i was more of a fan of their instrumental stuff, but i've learned to love both so i strongly encourage you to try their instrumental songs, they're kind of the essence of the band and you'll like them sooner rather than later :)
Yes, I recommend this band to anyone who wants to listen to an interesting musical genre.

I cried tears of joy hearing her saying that
Toe finally in an anime OST is legendary and they deserve all the recognition that follows
I'm with you on that. I remember seeing Toe's shows several times here in Japan over a decade ago. Their songs are really beautiful after all. I liked the scene where Nagara and Mizuho run together in the final episode and I felt like I was watching Downy's music video. The band Downy, formed in 2000, is considered as the founder of Japanese post rock. They're acquainted with Toe, BTW.
So thankful this song actually introduced me to them. Their albums are so good I am addicted. CHON who??
What should I search on spotify to find this song?
@@snowyninja4766 from what i can tell it's region locked or at the least currently unavailable. It is on spotify though in the sonny boy ost, so at some point it might become available (i'll probably comment here again if it does). You can find the playlist with the osts just by searching 'sonny boy' and check to see if the toe song is available in your region, but at least here in the UK it's not.

I liked the ending. This song made me feel a mix of happiness and sadness. I recently decided to drop out of college, because it made me so stressed out that I lost a lot of weight and am not healthy nor emotionally stable. Somehow this anime made me decide even more that I am going to save my life a little. It doesn't matter how hard it gets, I'll be okay.

Holy, we had cute internet interactions here
"You mustn't leave this place"
"So you're not saying we can't leave this place anymore uh"
Then after he said “how are you gonna take that back with you “ but he still had the compass in the end does that mean they never left?
@@ajc090 yeah they never left, you can see the explanation in the top 1 comment on episode 12 in ani-one
@@rigel7810 do you have a link?
@@gianmarcoportesani4868 cant link on youtube
@@ajc090 They did leave, not sure why some ppl are commenting on internet that they never left, the whole thing is just dumb since it would go against the whole 12 episode is about, a metaphor of the passage to adulthood. When God asked Nagara "How are you gonna take that back with you?" he referred to the first compass Nagara had, the one which was copied by the withe cat (sorry idr its name). So Nagara, in the end, had two compasses, the one copied and the compass got from Asakaze. Just stop the video right when the Principal says that and you'll notice a blond girl standing in a hallway. That girl is the very same coworker who was watching Nagara while he was kicking the trash out of frustration.
accidentally found this gem of an anime cuz of the poster. it looks weird. they're in a school rooftop but the sky is completely devoid of any color. it's just black. so i watched the 1st episode and it was perfectly what i expected: the sky is literally black. what i didn't expect was them stranded on an island, middle schoolers trying to understand quantum physics and interdimensional traveling. so many information squeezed in 12 episodes that watching this anime felt like forever. it's almost as if i went adrift for 2000 years, more or less, with them.
looking back at the poster, the sky's blue now. they're back. what a journey this has been.
You know it is really unclear whether they went back or they created a new world where Nozomi isn't dead.
I think they went to a possible reality where Nozomi isn't dead as Nagara is an observer and he again opened a box of realities as he did in the beginning which caused the drift.
@@aoi_nagara it’s a different world than the one they are originally from. What I have doubt is that if Asakaze wanted, he could also have returned to earth (and since when)?
The weird poster and black sky is one of the reason why some people skip this show, they were not used to seeing such weird art for an anime poster. I'm glad to have watched it
After reading the director's commentary of each episode, I found that most of the world mechanics doesn't matter. Most of the feelings I felt on each episode is exactly what the director wanted
@@pacoag99 Before handing Nagara the original Mizuho compass, Asakaze's talks about how Hateno Island sank and that Rajdhani became a forest already.
This alludes to an earlier conversation while building the rocket, where Rajdhani himself predicted that after enough time passed, the accumulation of unbalancedness inside him would turn him into a form "like Nozomi".
In other words, even though from the perspective of the viewer, Nagara and Mizuho only took a few minutes to fly to the intersection of worlds using their rocket, enough time has passed in the these worlds while they were gone for Rajdhani to 'die' and for Hateno Island to sink. Asakaze himself bore witness to these fact personally, which means he must have been subjected to the different flow of time inside the these worlds too. In the end, Asakaze has experienced so much time, probably thousands of years, that returning to the real world would actually kill him (since it's stated again and again that Nagara and Mizuho were only able to pull off their return trip because they spent a brief time in the these worlds, two years total, otherwise the rule of 'time spent in the this world can't be taken back' would have left them stranded like everybody else).
TL:DR Old man Asakaze would most likely have turned to dust if he had tried to go with NagaMizu.
This song is like a warm blanket to me. It makes me feel something no song has ever done, like there's a person right next to me, radiating warmth and love, so much love.
When I listen to this song, all I can hear is "Everything is going to be okay." In such an empathetic tone. It feels so human, each little sound. Thank you, Toe, for making such a special song. I like to have my playlists on shuffle, and this way when I hear this song, it's unexpected. During a stressful day full of work, I have a tradition: when this song randomly comes up, drop everything, and during these 4 minutes just let myself be swallowed by this comforting feeling. It helps me get through the day and gives me hope for the future.
I love music, but I never thought a single song could have so much power.
If you read a random stranger ranting about their love for a song, kudos to you, haha... I wish you a day full of warmth and love too.
The usage of music in Sonny Boy is ingenious. The show is silent for the most part so that it feels more impactful when there is music. And in sad scenes, instead of using dramatic sad music, the show uses more laid back and calming music to highlight the themes of the show
Everything in life uses music from television to martial arts. To sports commercials, everything
@@ElOmen22 But he's right though, it's really uncommon in anime to music be completely absent for the sake of atmosphere and aesthetic, and when it DOES kick in, it's one of the most memorable scenes in the show. I haven't seen yet other anime do what Sonny Boy does, and it tells a lot that the music complements the whole scene it's in so perfectly that i can't listen to this song in particular without sheding some tears just remembering that beautiful and melancholic chasing scene with Nagara and Mizuho

Deep after watching that anime it made me realize a lot of shit such an uneasy ride
I cannot get over this anime. I finished it and cannot articulate what I'm feeling at all. I basically got stunlocked by Sonny Boy and its been almost a week now.
I'm glad that there are people still replying, means that people are still finding and watching the show, and that it means so much to them that they search out the ost! I've watched Sonny Boy a few more times since I originally commented and even once entirely in Japanese (I've been studying). Live like Nagara, embrace the world in its most boring days for this is all we got. Each day is a rung of a ladder towards your goals and dreams and if you drift away, you will stop progressing! Which is alright, it happens to everyone now and again, just make sure, one day, to get back on that ladder and keep climbing.
Me too
Yeah me as well. I'm still trying to piece together why it made me feel the way it did. Stunlocked is a good way to put it
no matter how long you end up stuck on the show, they gifted us a absolute banger of an ost to listen too as we contemplate
Same except it's been mo months and still stunlocked

No matter how hard Nagara, Nozomi and Mizuho and the other stranded high school students try throughout the series, the conclusion remains the same:
"You can never go home again" - Thomas Wolfe
Ok, let's roll the dice
True, the recurring reminder of “you can’t go back (to the old world)” is a metaphor of the childhood/past that was left behind and cannot be brought back again
@@nguyntn9026 I saw this on the top comment on ani-one
This really hurts so much that when we grow up we have our duties and responsibilities to do and we have to leave our past self behind.
So many friends will not be in touch and we will not even have time to hang out with friends.
This is life, you can never go back to the past and you can never change the past but what you can do is move forward and change the future, just as Nagara or Nozomi said(I don't remember who said that).
This anime is not very emotional but very impactful.
Actually the phrase is.something more like: even if you go back, you have changed, and it wont feel like it did before.
It will be.different

This song and Sonny Boy are both masterpieces
This show is a masterpiece that knew how to blend visuals and music to create something beautiful. Sad to to see it end but it'll always be one of my favorites.
I didn't understand every line when I first heard the song, but the opening "Let we aou" hit me. Hearing someone plead to you in two of your languages to see a person again - I don't think you can understand how it feels until you speak two languages.
So on that note, indulge me as I give two notes from the translator (me!):
The opening line, to me, is so beautiful if you understand both Japanese and English. The first words: "Mou fureta" is like the mental image of two hands' fingers touching. "Let we aou" - Let we is using English's subjects to plead, while aou is a statement - 'should meet.'
The Japanese wordplay is so fun. Ou (追う) = to chase, Oou = to hide, Ou (負う) = to carry. E = image, Te = hand, and it looks like the use the onyomi for shadow (影) which is Ei. Three "o" sounds and three "e" sounds.
Thank you for sharing this! This makes the song even better
I didnt really understand shit when you translated the japanese into english

i feel like a total nostalgic boomer prematurely speaking. even though i'm in my 20s having gone through a lot yet not enough to find accomplishments but we must let go of the past and future equally. escapism is all fine and dandy until your anhedonia sets in. neet it up while you still can but embrace normalcy of working or studying and vice versa. it all boils down to multiple paths. deep yet shallow as it can get.

@@Shivam-vr6eh I cannot disagree more. I think Episode 1 was the weakest, and that it only got better from there. But I also felt that it was a masterpiece in philosophical and surrealist anime that made you think long and hard and accept that there are things in life you wont understand.

Anyone had similar experiences with this anime and it’s OST with another anime named “terror in resonance”?
I feel like both shows are similar in the fact that their ost + certain animated sequences define an anime as a whole
while both show have vastly different composer (sonny boy doesn't have main composer. the indie artist work directly with the director and music advisor and terror in ressonance are composed by yokko kanno. one of the greatest japanese music composer off all time) both have same sinichiro watanabe working directly in the project. sinichirou watanabe work as director in terror in ressonance and he's been working with yokko kanno quite a few times (cowboy bebop, kids on the slope, and terror in ressonance). and shinicirou watanabe also work on sonny boy, not directly tho. he work as music advisor

i remember the first time i heard this that exact point was from when a drastic change subsequently occurred in my life....
with time i started to realize the feeling of melancholy left behind this anime ,i was almost depressed but at the same time the last line of this anime when nagara said," Our lives are just beginning. What lies ahead will just take a little bit longer."this inspired me and let me realize we cannot change the past so there's no point in holding onto it, what we are able to do is move ahead and shape our future as much as we want.
this realization is very important to me, always being a shut in and after an incident i was totally down.Animes like this incite my heart enough to move on..... cause what I need is just a little bit of courage and enthusiasm....
It happens to me also. So many months have been pass since the show ended and in retrospective, i just improved so much because finally i just accepted my past and start to moving forward.
