  • Stephen Sackur presents a special edition of HARDtalk on The Road from Puerto Rico. The Caribbean Island belongs to the United States but is currently drowning in debt. Just three and a half million people live there but they've managed to run up a public debt of 70 billion dollars. Without an emergency financial rescue Puerto Rico is going bust and that will send shockwaves all the way to Wall Street.

    This video is from 2015.
Puerto Rico ended uo defaulting the debt payment that same year.
In 2016, US Congress approved a law that sent a Governing Body to the Island.

Re: vid at 8:15: Tryin' is lyin'. Puerto Rico already gets generous handouts from the U.S. Government. Why do you think they consistently reject statehood? If it was a state they'd have to pay more of their own way.

Privatize and flood the market with competition. Everything in Puerto Rico will get better. I was in Puerto Rico. To much corruption in government.
    1. Private wont waste money.
    2. People will be forced to become better.
    3. More competition will lead to leaner more efficient economic model.

Wealth is a measure of the goods and services you produce. If a politician is not coming to your with that message and details about how to encourage entrepreneurs; who will produce more goods and services then you are being sold a false dream. Governments do not have wealth or produce wealth they only tax it. Rule of Law and Entrepreneurship gets you out of poverty. I have NEVER seen anything else work.

No, the solution are not investors like the one shown on this documentary ( pretty funny that he took offense). He arrived to the island with plenty of tax benefits. Such opportunities are not offered to the local business. More requirements and money is required from any puertorrican that want to establish a business than investors from the outside.
The government have total control on the classification of land used for farming. To start farming have been difficult for many years due to the permits and you can not buy any land and start growing. However, Monsanto was received with open arms with incentives. The corporation that will keep ruin farmers business, land and the health of the surroundings towns and communities.
The Act Johns take millions in profits from merchandise ready to enter in PR, those taxes and fees goes directly to the USA pockets. The Cabo Rojo natural park produce salt. It is the only federal park that produces a product that is commercialized... the salt. That money don’t stay in PR.. that money goes directly to USA pockets. Puerto Rico has to promote farming but not any farming. Has to produce products that USA ca not produce to eliminate the competition. Promote cooperatives instead of regular bank loans. More restrictions from land buyers from other countries. That way any Puerto Rican can buy land because the prices are controlled. Otherwise it will end like the island of Vieques were only the rich can buy and the poor stay segregated. The grenadines island is another good example pretty much the island little by little been sold to the rich and residents don’t have jobs. Some of their smaller islands now are so expensive that locals can not afford to live there at all.

Unlike Hawaii ; it "governs itself" only technically. As for over 5 centuries Spain, European Pirates Of the Caribbean used to decide all. Now for the last century the US & & their global international corporations. Not able to vote locally for the president but ruled by it; is a voice to deaf ears. As federal help bureaucracy red tape mixed with local politics makes management an opportunity for foreign affairs. Reading the island nation cultural history is better of than other US territories. Still subject to actions not allowed in the mainland; to the detriment to locals; ( "shrugging their shoulders" embracement, as acceptance to the status quo norms), as is their daily bred from crib to their tombstone. Regardless; is an island of enchantment were locals cultural ways make others feel welcome, despite their insularism without other cultures regionalist ways. The natural beauties, food, & music are distinctive in the planet. As well as their impressive beaches, mountain vistas; from their fluorescent bioluminescent bays, to their unique green tropical rain forest cascades; fruits, flora & fauna. It is indeed an island of enchantment; best enjoyed with knowing locals before hand for the true experience, reserved for those willing to reach out in mutual commonalities of friendships.

    Translation:
Im not from any of the political parties, but Pierluisi has a point. We cant pretend to live with USA standard of living if we dont have the same rights as every other state. USA can criticize us all they want. But our situation is like going into battle with a hand tied behind our backs. Without the necessary tools we wont get ahead.

The reporter is arrogant, hostile and condescending. He should be fired and HR be let known as to WHY he was fired, with any and ALL INQUIRIES into his credibility and/or viability as a reporter to be truthful, HONEST as well as negative. NO RECOMMENDATIONS TO HIRE GIVEN, EVER!!!
The congressman is trying to buy more time so he can strike another debt restructuring deal to simply continue down the road of unlimited debt. If PR was allowed in as a state, it would drain the banks and the treasury dept. in short order, the Feds can see this. Anybody can. For now PR will continue on it's path as a touristy backwater destination. What the people want is a socialist utopia where no one works and free checks come in the mail every month. It is just a whirlpooling cesspool of bad ideas, bad attitudes, greed and corruption from top to bottom.
The doctor should take his credentials and his family out of there yesterday!!!

Bill Brit in Denmark, this could seem like a joke to you, but there are a lot of people, real people in Puerto Rico that are either starving, people that have no hope for their kids, because they cannot get good education for their children, there are hardly any doctors left in island, everyone is leaving. Yes. Our colonial relationship with the US has not been very profitable for the regular people in Puerto Rico that is ending up paying for the debt, that our government, the US government and Wall Street mismanaged!
