It’s worth noting that the clip he used also predated the scandal. Pat would have at least not been giving Wata any praise if the scandal had broken at that time.
I've been building my NES collection slowly for about 25 years now. Never understood collecting boxes or even manuals or games you don't play. Seeing this stuff makes me glad I'm not apart of that world. Its all about enjoying these games.
I can appreciate collecting boxes and manuals, I actually wish I kept more cases and manuals especially. Could even see some rare sealed things (as an extra copy or one of a kind), but not a game I think is bad like Hudson Hawk or something really common. And certainly not to the point it had become once speculators and normies got involved.
ultimately i think what is or isn't important in collecting is and should be very personal. i like having genuine games, so i don't buy repros on etsy, and i like having my games nicely displayed, but i don't give too much of a shit if the cover art is original or is a print from the cover project on nice paper. other people only care about experiencing the game in some form, or about owning it (even if they can't play it) or about having a pristine, sealed copy of games that are important to them. those all seem fine, and i think it's probably a good thing if there's diversity in what people seek out- otherwise, you ger huge bubbles for one particular version of a game or whatever. i will say if you only want _a_ version of a game and playing it isn't that important, buy shit from buyee lol almost everything is insanely cheaper in japan
I hate people like that. They ruin the hobby for everyone else. Don't let anyone confuse what it is. It is a hobby. Some consider it a lifestyle or a personality, but when people use it as an investment it ruins it for everyone.
The funniest part of that guys video is at the end he basically negates everything he said by revealing he is in fact an investor and has money tied up in WATA...
I don't see the value in SEALED collections. Complete-in-box in pristine condition? Sure. But Sealed in box is Schroedingers Game... I can say that 99/100 times the game is in the sealed box. But I have purchased a SEALED copy of FEAR 2 from the store I worked at, freshly shipped... only to find a Lost Planet demo disc inside. I also bought a Switch "The World Ends With You" to discover no game in it at all! Sealed is useless to me because without opening the box, you have no idea if you even have any game at all!
It's pretty crazy how many people are willing to lie and libel you just for a fruitless smokescreen for the sealed video game investor community. You can tell how terrified they are about people waking up.
They underestimated the real collectors and players who have been in this for decades. They’re being called out by people who know this stuff better than they ever will, and they can’t handle it.
I was waiting for this. As someone that has been watching you since Pat the NES punk, all the flea market madness episodes, the video game years, and clips from the podcast on UA-cam… my jaw was on the floor with the way you were represented in that Maddog video. Unbelievable.
I've been watching Pat for 8 years on and off. Pat is one of the most honest, direct, wholesome, game collectors in the community and I love the fact that he does what he does.

No game out there is legitimately worth a million dollars. The sports card market has been a market of incremental value for years and a Gem mint Jordan rookie card selling for 100,000 dollars does not surprise me one bit but any Nintendo game selling for that amount does not make sense. The most any vhs that can sell is 10,000 bucks which would be a copy of tales from the quadead zone and absolutely nothing else.
It’s like that simpsons where Homer gets framed for sexual harassment and he goes on a tv interview to clear his name, only for the tape to get cut so it seems like he’s saying “sweet can”
I've long considered Pat an expert. From his own channel to the Video Game Years to the podcast. Pat knows what's up. He's a true collector. I HIGHLY respect him Same with Ian. And now the same with Karl. Stay strong, guys! Keep doing what you do! Your voices NEED to be in this community.
I've been waiting for this since Karl revealed that they roped Pat into this as a full source, not realizing that he wasn't really ever a source at all (no offense). Karl had a huge number of other references and people that were in the loop, but to rope Pat into it because he was a collector himself...
This goes way beyond the video game industry. Tons of gen Z/gen x made a boatload in crypto, memestocks, and tech. They spent their money on anything they wanted. Guess what they wanted - the stuff from their childhood. They wanted it to collect AND to play. Both. They created scarcity which creates value. Then the leeches and resellers and “investors” leech the leftover pennies off of one another. This happened across industries and was particularly acute in collectibles of all kinds.
It always amuses me when someone cuts up video/audio or any material in order to make someone else look bad or to change a narrative just because of how ridiculous that line of thinking is. I guess these people assume nobody will fact check anything or look at the actual source material. In all fairness though the ones watching guys like "Mad Dog" and taking everything he says as undeniable truth probably weren't that smart to begin with 🤷♀ Keep calling these people out on their bs Pat! 👍
thats why vids like that do damage though, because the kids who want to be rich watching it and not being smart and then borrowing money to "make money" leading to ruined lives. it's not that different to promoting gambling.
The biggest issue I have with the Mad Dog video is, you are supposed to say, up front, when your video is sponsored by a company and it is clear that video was sponsored by WATA.
I suppose you can take solace in the fact that the same people who claim you're irrelevant are the same ones who lose their minds whenever you say anything...
The more prices drop, the happier *true* collectors will be. “Mad dog” clearly ain’t in it for the love. Props to you guys and Karl for calling out this BS, hopefully these investor types lose a ton of money and it drives away speculators and the rest of us can all go back to buying games at reasonable prices
He's not a collector. He's an investor. And I'm not talking like investor in the community or something. No, I'm talking big company tier of investment. The kind of investor who's willing to defame, lie and cheat in order to secure that his investment gives profit. So glad you made this recording, pat.
I'm a fan of Karl's videos, as well as your podcast. I loved the clip of Mad Dog insinuating that investors are "real collectors" while Pat, who has been collecting for literal decades and been heavily involved with knowing and understanding the market & hobby for all that time. That on its own was enough to show that Mad Dog was either lying, or incredibly uninformed on the topic.
Whether you said it or not, I couldn't possibly consider the misquote on opening games *"slander"* I'm a video game collector. I have been collecting for more than 25 years, and I *absolutely say* that people should rip open their sealed games. If the definition of a "collector" is someone who doesn't care about that actual game inside, and just wants to make a profit, then "collectors" can go **** themselves.
For that matter, I also don't give a shit whether my "bros." is on the left or on the right - No one ever talked about that when I started collecting. It's fair that some people care, but I can never understand that. At that point it's no longer about the games. :/
If I had to choose between the greatest hits version of Spyro the Dragon and the version without that, I'll take either. I want to play it not collect it.
it bothered me that karl acted like this was a spirited and friendly debate meanwhile mad dog was pulling every lie and twisted sentence he could muster out to smear pat and karl and acted in nothing but bad faith. but ultimately it shows that he's the bigger person between him and mad dog
If seal collecting wasn't a get rich quick scheme, they should be happier if sealed game prices dropped from tens of thousands of dollars to a few hundred dollars in right??????

The same thing happened with Sports Cards. If you werent filthy rich, you were knocked out of the collecting hobby, or at least the rare end of it. The covid crisis exploded all types of collecting, on all fronts. I couldnt afford it anymore.

The New England metal detecting/colonial artifact hunting hobby is basically this. Trade out the cart for an old coin or a rare button and you have basically the same thing. Same people, same jive talkin' tactics etc. Love you guy's content, keep it up.
I've run across many modern era resellers that are serious dinks on top of an army of narcissists flipping retro games for profit. They get super defensive any time anyone brings up market manipulation or fraud.
Honestly I've been following this ridiculous saga since the stories of the WATA Grading Company started making rounds, especially with Pat the NES Punk here, honestly the fact that Pat was the first or one of the first people to point out suspicions that WATA was up to no good Is quite an impressive feat have under your belt, honestly I've been having concern for the Retro Market since the whole outrageous pricing for old games have gotten so stupid that for some games I hold near and dear to me and for systems I collect for have been made grossly unobtainable thanks to these prices and making Piracy look real friendly.
The best way to fight this is to break them seals... it's honestly getting crazy for graded games. Would love to get a few of these seal games and break them open.
I used to collect retro games. Really just wanted the games I had in my youth that I lost over the years. I never owned anything that was particularly rare but even then it was too damn expensive. I sold most of them and just buy mini consoles or play the retro games on the switch. In the end playing them is the important part.
Two things I want to say… 1) huge thanks to you and Ian for staying on this topic. I have agreed with absolutely everything you’ve both said. 2) I’m a gamer AND a collector of around 20-25 years. Is it just me or is it too fkn much to ask that these people actually play a game or two? These sealed-only people are just such a bunch of assholes. Let’s be honest here, these rich folks are just pissed off that the rest of us don’t seem to know our place.
I think those collector-investors are a little delusional about the value of those things. They’re not like toys or comics. Physical video game media (and VHS) has a shelf life that no attempts at preservation can over come. CDs have a shelf life of about 35 years before they start breaking down and the data stored on them becomes corrupted due to deterioration. They won’t disintegrate after 35 years, but they will start the process of being unreadable. Cartridges probably have a longer shelf life because the data is stored on a circuit board, but it still has a shelf life. There’s a reason why most corporations, hospitals, and banks keep their backups on magnetic tape. It’s because that media has the longest shelf life.
I’ve collected a lot of different things throughout my life, and I’ve made use of all of them. Holding on to a bunch of untouched anything, whether it be Ferraris or action figures, is hoarding, imho. To each their own, naturally
There's something important to note about when Mad Dog criticizes Karl for not reporting on the positive things Pat said about Wata. Mad Dog criticizes Karl for both chosing to run with a negative story instead of a positive story and criticizes Karl for not including the positive things Pat said in his negative story. There is no obligation on the part of the reporter to report on unrelated positive aspects of a company when detailing their shady practices. If the positive aspects were related, say Wata put out a statement saying they would be less shady in the future or something, then yeah. It's probably important to note that. But the fact that Wata offers a good product in comparison to VGA has NOTHING to do with their shady practices. That criticism is equivalent to be criticizing a journalist for not mentioning that ENRON customers had fewer blackouts than PG&E customers when reporting on ENRON's financial crimes. And criticizing Karl for choosing to report on Wata's shady business practices instead of reporting on their good product is similarly asinine. To borrow the same analogy, that is equivalent to criticizing a reporter for choosing to report on ENRON's fraud instead of reporting on their superior electricity uptimes. It's an absolutely absurd criticism that just... it's hard to overstate how weak and meaningless that argument is. Truly breathtaking lack of logic on Mad Dog's part. It implies that a reporter, when deciding what to cover, simply chooses a company to report on and then chooses what aspect of that company they're going to report on. No! No no no, it makes NO SENSE. Karl is talking about Wata BECAUSE they had shitty business practices. That's the whole point! How a criticism like that could come out of someone's mouth in a scripted video is beyond me. I can't get over it, seriously lol.

Mad Dog is a clear example of what is destroying the Retro-gaming world. I started collecting retro consoles and games because I knew, one day, they might be hard to find and I did not want them to be forever forgotten as e-waste sitting in landfills and never seen again. I repair and restore them so they can be used for many more years. I learned to solder so I could do cap replacements. I did it because most of these systems hold a near and dear place in my heart as something I cherished as a child. Mad Dog is an investor, he does it for the money. I would be willing to bet it does not even matter what the items are, those could be comic books or postage stamps for all he cares. It is all about the money and getting a return on investment for him. The best we can all do is boycott his channel, why support him anymore than we need to by giving his videos or channel views.
I had conversations about Karl Jobst's video and WATA with a few friends who are not game collectors at all and barely even considered "gamers". That's exactly how much coverage that video got.

You can get all the relevent games on modern systems for a fraction of the prices and in most cases in compilations and for everything else there is emulation. Don't be a sheep, have money to eat!
Lol. Totally agree. My budget for retro games is just what I've spent on USB controllers over the years.
A great tip. I'm doing something in-between, I like to collect the systems themselves, but then I buy flashcarts for actually playing games.
I'm British and let me state categorically - there's no way we'd rip the top off King Tut's sarcophagus.
I thought that was the dumbest analogy too. That’s more akin to a coffin than a bed. 🤪
@@justsayin4632 I posted something similar on Karls video. Truly the most poorly thought out "argument" ever.
An this, kids, is why you don't use words that you don't know the meaning of.
Plus, a sarcophagus isn't a bloody bed, the whole damned thing was flawed. Lol
I was awaiting your response, especially after hearing him use you guys to defend the shenanigans going on with WATA and Heritage. This did not disappoint.
Pat: "I don't like attacking rich people for growing up with money..." Ian: "I do." LMAO, love you Ian.
"Mad Dog" seems like the kind of guy who sells you your own stereo.
Hearing “ignoring what Pat said positive about WATA” makes you laugh pretty damn hard when you’ve followed this podcast for years.
Even in the clip he showed it's clear Pat was just praising WATA's marketing as better than VGA's, which doesn't mean WATA as a whole is good/ethical.
It's like mad dogsh!t thinks we're all stupid.
Totally agreed.
You may just be the unluckiest person on earth for that to have happened to you twice! I’ve never heard of that happening before.
What "lies" did Karl say exactly?
I think you mean slander right? Libel is written down. But yeah, people are full of shit
I hope it's a bubble and then everything gets cheaper. The retro game bubble of 2023? It sounds like an economic bubble situation
I was waiting for this. As someone that has been watching you since Pat the NES punk, all the flea market madness episodes, the video game years, and clips from the podcast on UA-cam… my jaw was on the floor with the way you were represented in that Maddog video. Unbelievable.
Same! And after watching Karl have a one on one with this d bag I was shocked at what this guy seemed to believe as reality
I've been watching Pat for 8 years on and off. Pat is one of the most honest, direct, wholesome, game collectors in the community and I love the fact that he does what he does.
See the thing is you guys aren't winning this argument because you don't have a dark background, music playing, and you didn't play any clips from movies or tv shows. Me smart smart need funny reference to agree with man.
Edit: i didn't realize the dude only had 600 subscribers, He's definitely just replying to a video that has millions of views just so he can get the truth out there! Surely He's not doing it to ride the tail of it! Any engagement is good engagement am I right?
Sounds similar to some other small channels who like to trash talk Pat for telling the truth about a console whose name ends in -mico.

It’s like that simpsons where Homer gets framed for sexual harassment and he goes on a tv interview to clear his name, only for the tape to get cut so it seems like he’s saying “sweet can”
I liked all the drama club hand gestures and how smug he was.
Ah, a man of culture i see.
Pat knew people were going to be hot on this one, with the delayed released and big premier lol
Listening to this knob end a second time wasn't any easier. I'm glad you guys added your thoughts to Karl's. Thanks guys
That is such a scumbag move that someone takes your footage and then manipulates that footage so it fits your lying narrative. Absolutely disgusting.
In my country, we have this saying: "When you kick a rat, it tries to bite back."
The chrome app for restoring the YT dislike counter still works and yes that Mad Dog video lying about Karl and Pat is still getting destroyed.
not many viewers originally, seems like the guy only has ~600 subscribers
thats why vids like that do damage though, because the kids who want to be rich watching it and not being smart and then borrowing money to "make money" leading to ruined lives. it's not that different to promoting gambling.
Most likely they’re bots
Edit lol: like that one above me 😂
The biggest issue I have with the Mad Dog video is, you are supposed to say, up front, when your video is sponsored by a company and it is clear that video was sponsored by WATA.
my only issue with sealed cart games is some of them have a battery that can go bad and leak and then you paid 800$ for nothing
Another reason why I feel grading games is pointless
These are the same people that ruined comic books as a hobby.
I suppose you can take solace in the fact that the same people who claim you're irrelevant are the same ones who lose their minds whenever you say anything...
Finally. Been looking forward to your response, Pat.
I won't ever trust the guy who has only sealed GRADED items on his shelf and claims to be a collector.
He's not a collector. He's an investor. And I'm not talking like investor in the community or something. No, I'm talking big company tier of investment. The kind of investor who's willing to defame, lie and cheat in order to secure that his investment gives profit. So glad you made this recording, pat.
These guys are the kind of people that call themselves developers when they are just house flippers. There is a major distinction.
He spent thousands of hours on his hobby. Jeez, tough break. I hope he got through it ok.
Whether you said it or not, I couldn't possibly consider the misquote on opening games *"slander"*
I'm a video game collector.
A sarcophagus is not a bed, they aren't meant for sleeping in 🤣
If I had to choose between the greatest hits version of Spyro the Dragon and the version without that, I'll take either. I want to play it not collect it.
I'd give this comment millions of likes if I could just for Spyro 👌
I know it makes little sense but I do like the long box variants of ps1 games and will generally get them above the other versions.
@@rogersherman5391 the artwork on the box was nicer on the long boxes
So, I'm watching a video of two guys watching a video about a guy watching a video about a guy who watched a video and made his own.
Now that's meta
Remember when you could buy loose SMBs for less than a dollar
"We used to champion our heroes" he says as a clip plays of Hulk Hogan marching down the ramp. What a cornball lol
it bothered me that karl acted like this was a spirited and friendly debate meanwhile mad dog was pulling every lie and twisted sentence he could muster out to smear pat and karl and acted in nothing but bad faith. but ultimately it shows that he's the bigger person between him and mad dog
If seal collecting wasn't a get rich quick scheme, they should be happier if sealed game prices dropped from tens of thousands of dollars to a few hundred dollars in right??????
Bald guy DELIBERATELY EDITED THAT CLIP to create a deception. It's despicable.
Yeah the idiot took the video down the first time. Been reuploaded it disabling the comments that just shows how coward ladies people are. They knew they were wrong.

Buy them and open them, man! Stick it to those sealed/graded collectors!
@@dissraps wanna spot me some funds.
That's why I love your show and didn't know who that looser was.
All the guy could do is attack the person. Not the facts.
I refuse to call Mad Dog a collector. He is a speculator looking for a quick buck.
And now all those investors are losing their asses

Making old games into gold prices
Actual collectors were pissed that these jerks were trying to turn their hobby into an unobtainable pipe dream.
9:38 "I've never heard of you, therefore you have no value." Basically what that "I've never heard of X" defensive phrase means.
