  • Thank you for checking out Weapons of Mars Destruction! I hope you have as much fun playing it as I have making it! This is primarily a sound replacement addon and a fun way to scratch my sound design itch, but I just can't leave well enough alone, and Doom 3 data is too much fun to not mess around with. This project will never be complete until I just absolutely lose interest, as the fun is in the editing for me, not the finished product. But don't worry, you'll get your product.
It's no secret that the original sound design of the weapons in Doom 3 leaves a number of players feeling underwhelmed, though I do still enjoy the original experience and all the nostalgia it brings. Thankfully id Software designed Doom 3 to be easily modified, and I like to put my sound libraries and editing software to good use by giving the weapons a little more kick and pizzazz. What started with me digging through the Killing Floor SDK eventually led to creating my own sounds, but there's still some obvious holdover.
And because I play so much Doom 3, it's only natural to find aspects of the gameplay that don't quite sit well with me after a while: like armor being largely ignored, grenades being more hazardous to the player than monsters, flashlight/grenades/chainsaw/soulcube making the weapon scroll process so arduous when they can so easily be toggle only, etc, etc. Just little things to give the gameplay back to the player. Doom 3 is an action/horror game, and since the horror wears thin very quickly, there's no reason for the action to suffer. I play a lot of weapon and gameplay mods for Doom 3, and while I enjoy them, I find myself often wanting a simpler experience that opens up the action that's already there, rather than being "realistic" or modernized.
Some of the features of this mod/addon include:
-new weapon sounds, both firing and foley (duh, that's the main point of this)
-faster firing and reloading for the shotgun (because if you're going to make it reload one shell at a time to be realistic, at least make it go faster!)
-armor absorbs 60% damage (damage taken in veteran difficulty increased by 20% to compensate, but at least armor pickups have a purpose)
-reduced weapon recoil and explosion shakes (to alleviate my motion sickness)
-pickup ammo and max ammo reduced to make weapon choice more meaningful and situational (there are still enough ammo pickups in both the base game and expansion to never run out, you just won't beat the game with enough surplus ammo to start your own business)
