- Welcome Gardeners! Join me today for visiting Katie Candelario from Candelario Ace Hardware. She is so much fun and her family’s store is a joy to visit! While I was there, I found a new employee to help keep the critters away from my veggies… think he will succeed? 🦉 Enjoy!

I think it’s time to trade your SUV in for a truck! Especially, because you live in the country now! Yep!
I thought the same thing…
Ford Lightning pickup!
Proven Winners Pickup!
@@joycerichardson1810 no way....we're already in bed with pw.....how about a Monrovia truck ....after all it is the state of California.
Chevy makes great trucks also! What ever she does in the future, she should have her logo on both sides!
Lance on duty is hilarious and I hope he helps solve the critter problem! Ace Hardware has EVERYTHING and in my experience if they don't have it in stock they will order it for you! Oh those raised beds are so amazing I am putting them on my wish list! Have a wonderful day in your garden!
One could say Lance is a hoot🤣🤣🤣-hope he helps! The netting is a good idea so net everything. That tree is beautiful.
Adding to my comment yesterday….putting a microphone on your guest would be very helpful too Janey 😊
I wish your friend would of had a microphone. Would of loved to heard her comments. Great looking store.
Janie you have such good energy, no wonder you have such great friends!
Janey your guest needs a mike.
How long do you guys think it’ll be before she finally breaks down and buys the truck? 😅😂
I say by next Spring we're going to see Janey sporting her new 'country truck'!!
Janey, so excited about your Red Bud. What a sweet relationship you guys are building, love having gardening friends.
I just bought an Alley Cat Red Bud. It’s a variegated white and green leaf. It’s gorgeous.
I didn’t have time to read any comments so I’m sorry if this is a repeat…Lance is awesome! I have one named Henry that protects my berry patch from the robins. I wanted to say that birds are smart! If you don’t move Lance every day or every other day to a new spot the birds will realize he’s fake and they will ignore him. I move mine all around and he works great for me. Good luck! Thanks for all you share with us!❤
Also for the netting do not use them for shrubs or where the netting can’t be tightly secured down all around. Someone I know used it for her blueberry bushes and the birds try to get under the netting and two died! One needs chicken wire or that cloche as in your raised bed in those cases. 😢🌸❤️🇨🇦
Hi Janey - this is the first year I've had problems with birds in my veggie garden. I think I'm going to have to get a Lance too and maybe some bird netting! I know i have squirrel problems, but never birds...so far that is! Maybe they're getting back at me for not filling up the bird feeders!!! I loved your visit with your friend at Ace, and her gift to you of the redbud is beautiful. Where are you going to put the Shasta daisies, they look like they're either going to sleep or ready to be planted? Here in Boise, they die back to the ground in winter and come back like gang busters in spring. I can't remember what they did when I lived in Sacramento. You and Jason are making such great progress in your new place, I look forward to watching your videos every morning, before I even get out of bed! I want to tell you how much I appreciate all your hard work and thought and dedication you put into making these videos, I know it's allot. I don't know how you find the time or energy for it all. I think I say for all of us watching, thank you for all that you do, you are appreciated. ❤
Wish I could hear her!!!
What a lovely gesture from Katie to get you such a perfect gift! That Redbud tree will look gorgeous in your "island"! ❤
Lance is so funny and an entertaining mascot for the back garden! Someone else mentioned it, but I'll repeat: birds are very smart and sly! If you don't move Lance around the area regularly, the birds will just ignore him and, worse yet, sit on his head and mock you, LOL!😂
We all need a Lance in our garden. 😀I could watch your videos for hours. Nice Ace hardware and friend. Love that tree. Can’t wait ti see it in bloom.
I had that type of netting over my plants this summer for a very short time because I found a bird (Finch) thoroughly tangled up in it and struggling. It took two of us to cut it out and it flew away into a nearby tree. I hope you don't have that issue. I'm going to use something sturdier to cover plants next time.
This was such a fun video, your friend Katie is so sweet and pretty. I absolutely love Lance, he is so cute, you may have to get another owl, name her Lance's wifes name. The veggies garden you have done are going to grow beautifully. You are such a bubbly down to earth kinda girl. I bet you and Jason have a fun time all the time. You are so funny. Im loving your channel more and more. You video's are so much fun and they make me feel great. Dont ever change Janey. You are so sweet and beautiful ❤❤❤❤
Janey, I think it’s time to look for a “country truck”. Ours doesn’t look the best, but it does what we need it to do! Love Lance the Owl ❤ pok choy is good, especially in a coconut curry soup, yummy!
Oh this sounds delicious, I'll have to try some next year.
Love Lance! That Ace is the biggest I’ve seen. What a great store and friend. The tree will be gorgeous!
Janey-borrow Robbie and his truck and go back to Katie's and get that Flamethrower Redbud. You will not be sorry. I had a devil of a time finding my Flamethrower, but it was worth all the effort. They are so beautiful with the variety of leaf color. The one at Katie's is special because it isn't trained in the a weeping form. I have had to re establish a leader on my redbud to make it back into a shade tree. That tree in Gridley doesn't have that problem.
Loving Lance so much😂, hope he does his job as he stands guard. Your Redbud is going to be such a beautiful accent to your front bed. I just planted a golden weeping Redbud so I’m excited. 🎉
after the last Robbie video I wanted to mention the extra microphone but i wanted to stay positive. (I was surprised that between the two of you the audio was so bad.) BUT now after this super FUN visit. . . make sure you put another microphone on you Christmas wish list.
Seriously LOVE your videos and I am loving watching your journey.
Katie’s a sweetie and your tree is GORGEOUS! I don’t guess I ever thought about Aces being franchised. I go to my local Ace for Proven Winners annuals too lol. Sure the big stores and nurseries carry some, but there’s always a BANG of them at Ace!
We use tulle fabric over ladder mesh hoops attached with clothes pins (inexpensive, used for concrete work, Home Depot) to cover seedlings in Tucson’s Master Gardener veggie demo gardens. Helps with rodents. A pack rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime.
Great video content, but PLEASE don't swoop around so fast! I agree with someone else that you can't hear your guests when you do these videos. I don't mean to be critical but would just like your videos to continue to improve because you have such great ideas and are so likable. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hill the plants into your raised bed, pot and all so you won’t have to water them as often, then want your ready to plant just pop them out and plant. So the plants won’t suffer and you’re not a slave to watering.
OMG love Lance, he's hilarious. Great friend to have that owns a nursery.
Hi, Janey! Love your videos, but I do agree that you need a microphone for your guests. Very hard to hear what they are saying.
Lance is a hoot! Your giggles are so fun. we have real owls, I never see, but hear at night. I was thinking of buying an owl,but don' want to disturb my real ones.
What a super Ace hardware your friend has. We love the help we get from the one near us. Having personal service is everything. Hers is going to be a destination with your Best for West and PW!
We love bokchoy sauted too, and you will find the same with the swiss chard. With that we do onion, garlic and swiss chard, s&p, and top with sliced tomatoes.
Love Lance! Everyone needs something fun in their garden to make them smile (or even giggle) - and Lance definitely does that in Janey’s garden! Also love the new Redbud - what an amazing gift! Can’t wait to see it in place in Janey’s ‘island’ and in bloom next Spring!
Wow your flowerbeds are filling out quickly!. Katie is such a sweet person.❤
That's the nicest ace hardware ever , looks like a new store, so big and loaded with all your garden needs... the one here is small in an old building, barely any garden area, not even enough to call it a garden area ,mostly home repair and hand tools
Dear Janey, you have the best laugh. So contagious!
You might want to plant the Shasta daisies where they are as they are easy to move and it will take the pressure off you. Also you won’t have to water twice a day.
Good Morning ☀️
Such a Beautiful redbud tree.
Welcome to your new 🏡 Lance the 🦉
Hi Janey 🌺 your friend looks so beautiful and her store is amazing . Janey you made me laugh because of the owl . Have awonderful day .🌺🌻🌺
love the video I think maybe more owls adorable you made me laugh
Hi Janey 🦉😄. Cutting half the top growth of the shasta daisy will help the already stressed root balls.
That's a great garden center at that ACE Hardware.
Great advice!
That’s a nice Ace Hardware! I mix my Swiss shard and kale in with flowers in my small yard. It’s so decorative. Most people don’t know it’s edible. My chickens love to eat them as well.
I was gifted three used owls from my aunt after she determined they didn’t work for her. I too haven’t had much luck with them or the live hawks that perch in the trees of my property. Rabbit, squirrels, voles, gophers, birds and deer are constantly attacking my garden. I love the quote about planting three of each plant. Hope Lance works for u!😊P.S. I have had great luck with bird netting!
I use the owls to keep the birds from nesting on my porch eves. It. works!
I had better luck with toy snakes. The netting I tried trapped a few small birds and a snake once, was too sad so I stopped using it. I also used some moving wind sculptures.
The old farmers in my area, 9B outside on New Orleans, use to say 4 seeds were needed:
One for the mouse
One for the crow
One for to rot, and
One to grow
You laugh about Lance.... but he will work... for birds. Had an owl for YEARS... until we moved! GO Lance!
Your videos are never long enough Janey! I so enjoy them. That redbud is going to be stunning in your center garden bed! What a beautiful and thoughtful gift. I did not realize that Proven Winners were so hard to find. I thought it was just our local nurseries that don't seem to carry them. I think I might just order directly from them when I am ready. Too bad Lance's eyes don't light up at night, lol!
wowzer - that's a fabulous Ace Hardware !!! the ones around me (N. Atlanta) are half that size ! and you definitely need a Flame Thrower. I have one that's been in the ground for 2 years and it's fabulous - a real stunner in the Spring & Fall - and mine has a semi-weeping habit (weird?).
Fun….I have tons of family members who live in Biggs right next to Gridley! I will tell them to visit and purchase some beautiful plants from them! ❤. Thanks again for all your great videos 🩷
Hmmm, Proven Winners annuals in Gridley? I may have to drive in from NV because I can’t get PW here either. 3 hour drive one way. Make a day of it!
That owl is so cute. I’m surprised you have a bird problem. I’m on 2 1/2 acres in SoCal and birds don’t touch our veggies. I put my bird feeders on the other side of our property. ❤
Lance is too cute! He had me laughing, too. I can empathize with your critter problem. We "battle" with deer, raccoons, bunnies, squirrels, an occasional coyote, and voles. I use Liquid Fence to deter deer and bunnies. When I plant annuals, I spread blood meal around the plants and that helps to stop the raccoons and squirrels from digging up the plants. My complaint - "It's a pest a day!" Because we only have shade I don't try to plant vegetables. Good luck! {zone 7b coastal Virginia}
Years ago we had trouble with blue jays pecking our peaches and apricots. I thought about buying a owl but they didnt have moving heads back then!...LOL... But, i remembered that we had peach orchards across the street from us when I was growing up and they used metallic reflective tape to deter the birds. I bought that instead and that worked. It is like a streamer and blows in the wind and reflects the sun. Birds dont like them.
I feel like I missed a lot on this video because I couldn't hear your friend, Katie. You seem like such a people person and I hope you make more videos with people who share your love of gardening. But, please, could you get another mike? Thank you!
Pull the potted plants out of one of your short raised beds. Lay down plastic to make look like a mini swimming pool. Put your plants back in and water. It will be the largest pot saucer you’ve ever seen! This works great. I volunteer with several groups in town here, babysitting the plants for our local plant sales.
Just saw gridley, ca is 5 hrs from Bakersfield. As soon as you tell me they are on their way back from proven winners. I will be on my way!!!!!
Maybe Katie is just soft spoken, but I could hardly hear her 😞 Wish she was wearing a mic. Hopefully next time.
Oh my gosh!! I just laughed and laughed when I saw Lance doing his thing. Your videos bring me joy. Bless you heaps.
FYI~ your videos aren't long enough ☺️... I could watch your videos all day
Katie - do you carry the native Western Redbud? I’m looking for one about the size of the redbuds shown.
Please let us know when Kate gets her Proven Winners plants, even its its 1 1/2 hours away I will go twice that just to load up my car. Hoot Hoot 🦉
The net needs to be supported by hoops. The birds will just light on it and peck through the net. I speak from experience. We have to net everything! Grapes, all things planted from seed, and we used to net our cherry tree until we gave up and cut it down.
JanieI’m cracking up! You have such a happy, infectious laugh!!
Last year a bird got caught and died in the loose netting frame over my blueberries. I felt awful. I didn’t net them this year since we weren’t going to be here to harvest. For next year I’m going to make a cage out of netting, making it taut so hopefully no entanglements.
Espoma Veggie Tone or Biotone Starter are good, mild organic fertilizer for veggie starts. I never have transplant shock.
I am in Orland and I will be coming to Gridley!! So much fun watching you two girls❤❤😂
Loved your visit at Candelaria Nursery, you are so blessed by many friends. Can’t wait to see the tree planted. Your videos are never too long if anything it goes too fast. Lance is fun to have, we have non moving owls I guess to just have as a yard deco. Can’t wait until the PW event next year.
Oh yay! Owls are so fun and they really do work to keep the birds away for sure!
I’m in Marysville so this may be the stop for me instead of going to Roseville. Thanks for the tour and entertainment!
I had a bird get all tangled up in the same netting, had to cut him out, never again will i use netting…
Ohhh i sooo would have grabbed the pink lady apple tree, they are the best apples…. You may need to move lance around periodically so the critters dont get too used to him
Don't plant the redbud in full sun in your zone. It will need morning sun and afternoon shade. I have a redbud in zone 7b in Georgia and they cannot handle our hot afternoon sun in the summer.
Oooh!! So excited but it’s going to be a drive for me in Roseville. Ah well, worth it!!
How do your zinnias survive once it gets cold? Did you plant to just enjoy for Fall before the frost?
Can’t wait to see Katie’s Ace Hardware grow she will be a great PW source for you. Love the tree and of course Lance I laughed so hard when you put him up. 🦉
What type of soil do you hv in the raised flower beds pls. Is it just compost or mix of potting soil/compost?
We get VERY few Proven Winners plants here in the PNW 😢. How I wish we did!!!
Wow Katie has done a wonderful job with the garden center! I definitely want a redbud now 😅
Looks like Far & away neighborhood feeling like class mates .
Girl, You are always a bright spot in my days here in SC Zone 8. I need Lance in my garden, too, and I WILL be purchasing him.
What plants do you recommend for zone 1. I live east Texas.
Yay Gridley nursery, I live in Chico , guess I will be going to see what they have soon.
Thank you. Pulling my netting out to cover my starts today. Moving my stationary owl after watching this. Blessings on your day. 😘 Be the tree. Weeping forms are so lovely.
Might want to get some more netting.bunnies love your choices. Bunnies will learn to laugh at lance too.😉
Good morning.
Why didn’t you plant the veggies in the back two tall beds 🇦🇺
You will need to move Lance the owl, every few days or the birds will figure out he’s not a threat
I'm seeing a truck in your future. This video was so good.
Try some mothballs for the rodents. Just sprinkle it around not on your plants.
A better cover for baby veggies etc…is the black tulle fabric….holes are smaller.
Owls work if you move them at the least on a weekly basis. Not so good stationary..
Oh P.S. Janey - i think Lance is going to need a girlfriend!😅
Lance is a wonderful addition 😂😂😂😂
You need a few lances and also cut off those leaves that are dead on the chart so they don’t take energy from the plant but it’s going to be good
Do birds get their feet tangled in that bird netting? It seems so fine. Love Lance.
Yes. It happened to me this summer. The netting had only been there for a few hours. I found a finch caught and struggling the first morning after installing the netting. Its body was completely tangled in the netting. It took two of us to cut it out and it flew away. If I hadn't checked on it, it would've died because it was unlikely to free itself and it was going to be a scorching hot day. I'll use something sturdier the next time.
Artichoke grow very well in the Winter in California!
You’re my go to the in the morning now with coffee to her neck and neck and then Robbie😂
What is the temp for you over there because i have highs in the 50 but tomorrow frost even😢.
Lance is so funny ! Katie is so sweet and pretty . What a nice hardware store !!
Great tour! Katie needed her own mic so we can hear everything she is saying ☺️
The redbud would benefit from having part shade. They grow naturally at the edge of woodlands and they're water loving. It might scorch in the middle isle and they're hard to move once rooted in. Plan to plant stuff around it that will shade its roots and give it lots of drip.
So true. I lost one in full sun. Other one planted in understory of sweetgums is thriving & beautiful 8 years now.
i planted forest pansy redbud in full sun (east TN) it is suffering. common redbud doing fairly better. didn't do enough research ;(. such a cool tree. they grow on edge of woodland freely here.
Hi For the veggies I recommend to straw mulch
That Redbud tree such a perfect gift it's beautiful!
PS….the veggies cannot grow through tulle
Love Lance! 🤣
Side note - I hope the birds don’t get stuck in the netting🙁
Awesome! We can never find proven winners in Santa Rosa!
Get some Biotone at planting it makes all the difference.
