I always feel like a caveman trying to crush a nut with a rock when it comes to playing Johnny Marr. Thanks for helping me feel a little less Neanderthal.
Allison, I’m so happy I found your channel. Love your teaching style. I saw your Nowhere Fast video: please consider making a tutorial. Keep up the good work!
You’re the best teacher on UA-cam. You actually say where your fingers are in the shapes and don’t just do the “look at my hands.” I really appreciate your lessons and hope you are doing well these days. 🥂🎶
Your videos have helped me learn a lot. I have only been playing for three months, but I've learned to play a lot of great songs from you. You are able to break down each section in a way that's very easy for me to understand. Thanks so much for making these.
Thanks for another brilliant Smith's lesson. Your lessons are so good, really well paced and really well explained. Thanks again for taking the time to record and share.
You are the absolute best Alison! Thanks for your generosity in giving your time and sharing the hard work you have put in figuring out these wonderful Smiths classics. I could never hope to approximate this gorgeous Marr effort without your help and marvellous instruction.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've always dreamed of playing this song, always though it was going to be way too hard for me, but lo and behold! Thanks to you, I can play it now. Dream come true. :) Please keep up the excellent tutorials!
Thanks Alison another excellent lesson. I am a big Smiths fan and always found this song one of Johnny Marr's most melodic guitar melodies. Much appreciated. Jim
For the second section in the first part don't forget to do a pulloff from the B on 2nd string at the end of the power chord to an open A as you transition to the slide section and let that A drone underneath. Listen closely and you'll hear it on the recording. It's an integral part of the song--subtle, but it's there. Marr likes to slip ringing low end drone notes into songs to counter the intricate work he's doing up on the higher strings. A classic example is the use of the F# sharp drop with the D chord position (with capon oddly on the third fret) on Stop Me. As for Some Girls Are Bigger if you really want to go retro and pay a bit more homage to the 80s you can echo the second chord in Tea in the Sahara (by some other British group with an American drummer in it) by adding the middle the second chord in Part 1, section 2 (add the 2nd fret on the G string). Wee bit of trivia there.....
Thank you so much! I have always loved the guitar part in this song but never thought I could play it. The fact that I am getting close now is awesome.
Really love your tutorials Allison. Specially The Smiths ones. You are a great TEACHER. I've learned to play The Smiths songs thanks to you. Great Job.
Great video. But I'm sure that you are getting the Outro wrong. Instead of simply switching back and forth between the C# and B chords, it actually goes C# - Amaj - B. It switches from C# to A between the 4th and 5th beat. Check out the video of the live version and notice how Marr's left hand switches positions slightly before moving up the neck to B. That's where it happens! You can also clearly hear the transition when listening to Andy's bass line. It's just a minor thing, but I think it is the most important part of the outro, since it breaks with the rather gloomy chords progression of the verse and somehow gives it a more positive and "optimistic" feeling (that's how I like to think about it:) It's something most covers seem to get wrong. Hope this helps.
Make your own fucking tutorial, superstar. It always amazes me that people who think they know exactly how to play a song will seek out videos on how to play that song and then leave critical comments underneath.
Your hands are beautiful to watch, so relaxed, economy of movement - there's a lot to be learned just from that. Makes playing look way easier than it turns out to be :-) i always enjoy your videos, thank you!
Thank you so much Allison, I could get now some nuances I couldn't figure out myself before : )) Note for learners - it helps a lot to know the chord progression behind! C#m B A F#m G#m (verse) C#m A B / A F#m G#m (chorus) C#m A B (E) / (send me your pillow) For instance, you can render it on the acoustic w/ capo 4 and Am G F Dm Em etc. ^_____^
The song is composed of B, A, F#m, G#m, C#m and E. You've done a really good job at selecting which notes Marr is playing. I'm gonna give it a shot. It's a great song and Marr is a genius. When the Smiths came out his style was unlike anyone else's on the scene at that time. All these years later I still think he's brilliant. He was only 18 when the Smiths starting recording.
Many thank for this wonderful music from a wonder person, that share its talent as a guitarist with many unkwon people, thank you very much from Madrid (Spain)
Alison, greetings from Australia. Been a long time subscriber, and wanted to say how great your tutorials are! So helpful. I would request Well I Wonder as that is such a fan favourite but not a lot of people on UA-cam have done lessons on them. Great videos!
Hi Allison, thx for the videos. I’m a The Smiths fan and I’ve been learnd a lot with yours tutorials. Very didatic and helpful even for a beginer like me. Have you done a tutorial for Heaven knows l’m miserable now? I’ve searched in your page and did not find. Thx and cheers!
Well done. Learnt meself.Took a while. Look up the Brixton 12/'86 version. Sadly, their last, and to my knowledge, the only public performance of this song. Basically the same, but capo 4. Nice Strat.
In my opinion, the two most important events in human history are the discovery of fire, and Johnny Marr's guitar work on this song. Not necessarily in that order. And Allison Bennett is certainly near the top, as well.
Probably the greatest melody ever written.
lmao
One of, not the greatest but it's from Marr so it's up there with the greatest..
Agreed 100%
i agree 100 per cent.
Probably ,but maybe bettered only by some other Smiths melodies🤩
I always feel like a caveman trying to crush a nut with a rock when it comes to playing Johnny Marr. Thanks for helping me feel a little less Neanderthal.
Neanderthals had bigger brains than Denisovan
I've been wanting to play this song since I was a TEENAGER, more than a decade ago, and now I actually know how thanks to you. A million kudos
Released this one a little early since it's a holiday week here in the U.S.....Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy.
That was a short one, but a tough one. That outro gave me heartburn
Such an infectious melody, you are a divine gift to us poor slobs hacking away at old Smiths tunes.
Some riffs are better than others :)
Thank you very much for this one! :-)
They ‘are are’ better lmaoooo
I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

Allison, thank you for this. I tabbed it out from your tutorial and can play it through. Keep up the good work.

He's right. She is missing that pull off. I don't know about the other stuff he is talking about though lol
Thank you so much! I have always loved the guitar part in this song but never thought I could play it. The fact that I am getting close now is awesome.
Really love your tutorials Allison. Specially The Smiths ones. You are a great TEACHER. I've learned to play The Smiths songs thanks to you. Great Job.

Great video! Your Smiths tutorials are certainly the best I’ve seen.
Thanks so much for this lesson, I've wanted to learn this properly for so long.
Allison, so much respect for what you've been doing🔝

Your lessons are the best, thank you. I've been able to play part 1 for a while but couldn't work out part 2.
YES! Yet another fantastic song breakdown! Thanks, so much yet again, Allison! I hope that you and yours have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Great stuff! Sounds much more accurate than my version - back to the woodshed for me. Thank you for sharing!

Marr is a wizard..great job breaking it down.
