  • Electrical wires are made of metals that have a good ability to carry current. If we make the wire really small, the conductance becomes quantized. This is not an exotic phenomenon: it happens every time you switch off the light. Explore more in this latest episode of The Quantum Around You with UNSW's Andrea Morello, the series which proves that quantum mechanics has more of an impact on your daily life than you think.
    Associate Professor Andrea Morello is a researcher and lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at UNSW Australia in Sydney. He was one of the 2013 Australian Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year.

    Interesting stuff! I have some background in electronics and am a ham radio operator, so the concepts of electricity are familiar with me. This guy explained Quantum Conductance without a bunch of calculus that most of us don't know. I'm sure that kind of math is useful in the field ... but it does make it hard to understand if you aren't fully trained as a scientist! I'm at the beginning levels at this point. The subject came up because I bought a refrigerator off Facebook the other day, and the seller had just completed her PhD in Quantum Physics .. specializing in Quantum Conductors.

    Also, if you blink your eyes really fast, the tiger in the shirt comes into a state being and non-being simultaneously in what is known as a quantum feline wavefunction, a phenomenon not much different from Schrödinger's famously boxed cat. Truly radical stuff. Try it!

    Man, I wish I had this when I was working retail at an electronics store trying to tell people why goldplated connections were better, it's all because of Quantum Mechanics o.o

    I understood the phenomenon, but I did not understand how quantum conductance differs from conductance.

    • @rajatkumar35
      @rajatkumar35 10 років тому +2

      They are very much the same thing
      the only difference is that when we that about conductance we talk as if it is a continuous phenomenon . The quanta of a is the least amount by which a quantity can be changed. At macroscopic level the conductance is so massive that we literally see no point in quantifying it and let it be a continuous quantity (we are ignorant but it makes our work easier) but when talking microscopically there can only be a limited number of electrons flowing through the conductor and hence we need to quantify it and hence comes QUANTUM CONDUCTANCE

    Please tell me your shirt is a CMBR print and not leopard. If it is a cat print, then using Schrodinger's thought experiment, your shirt is in superposition of both worn and shouldn't be worn. JK, seriously, great explanation and video.

      According to the Wikipedia page on quantum point contacts, they are extremely sensitive detectors of electrical charge and may be useful as charge read-out devices in quantum computers.

    you can't make ANYTHING "ten time smaller". Think about it. One times smaller is ZERO. and x-10x=-9x. Duh. Credibility plummets to zero immediately after hearing this dopey error. It speaks volumes about australia's "university" of new south wales. :P

    • @superkiwistar
      @superkiwistar 10 років тому

      ***** take a length of 10 cm. ten times smaller is 10 cm less 10 x 10 cm. what do you think that is? 10 - (10 x 10) = ?

      the english used in this clip is wrong, and that's a fact. i guess you're ok at putting things together. but, if you write reports, your boss is likely to get an impression you do not want. it's like seeing spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. he may not mention it, but it doesn't make a good impression.

    • @superkiwistar
      @superkiwistar 10 років тому

      well thanks. that explains a lot. most who don't get it know english as a second language. that terminology was universal in the english speaking world centuries ago, but started being questioned in the 20th century. hopefully the whole world wakes up to what makes sense and what doesn't before the end of this century. cheers.

      ***** it's fairly obvious your limited intellect has been unable to comprehend simple algebra. it's basic high school stuff. try again. i know exactly what i am talking about, and have sat through many uni lectures on exactly this topic. repeating a wrong does not make it right, no matter how many times you do it. an educated person should make an effort to be correct in grammar and spelling for a presentation. how would you like to receive a newspaper or magazine full of spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammatical errors? your argument of "lots of people i know do it" just doesn't wash. sure, supermarkets, and even road signs, can be incorrect. but the people who make these mistakes are not claiming to be academics or educators, so people are more forgiving.
