Hello! Hope you're well! Good idea! I did have an idea for a pretty gonzo fume cupboard, basically getting a big clear plastic container, putting it upside down with a bit of space to reach within, and then cutting a hole in the top so an air duct can pull air out. And filtering it of course! If the air flow is high enough then it should (in theory) work. I think the biggest downside of the current carbon filter addon is the depth, and so its ability to handle higher airflows. I learned since making this that, to properly filter VOCs, air should (if I remember correctly) spend at least 1 second in activated charcoal. So, the oven hood filter is likely sufficient for maintaining negative air pressure in an enclosure (which is what I wanted it for, after all), but it could probably do with a big honkin' activated charcoal filter add-on. If no-one beats me to designing one, then it'll likely be called Bhachaf. I do like me some goofy names. Anyhow, shouldn't be too much to make such an add-on, I just have no need for one so it's not high on my list of things. Feel free to beat me to it!
Fortunately, the mixed flow fan will help a lot here. As it is at the moment, with just the XPlus going through the ventilation, its fan by itself is just about enough to maintain negative pressure for ABS prints and the like. For just one printer, the mixed flow fan is super overkill for doors-closed printing! I'm slowly working on making the mixed flow fan speed-controllable and controlled via ESPHome, so I'll be able to send out commands from the printers. From there, I'm planning on having servo-controlled blast gates because I'm too forgetful to remember to deal with blast gates myself :> that'll mean that if a printer isn't in use then it'll be closed off, and with the mixed flow fan it should have plenty of oomph to cope with the t-junction. In any case, I'll have to see how it works in practice! Good luck, Future Fneb!
I have NO idea why UA-cam recommended this to me. I know nothing about 3D printing or air filtration. But I guess as an outsider, I'll just say that I'm 2 seconds in and....we BOTH know that's not how anybody's ever gonna pronounce that. >_>
Really nice project, I have the fear that IKEA will discontinued the cheap filter soon? (I have no data point for the fear...) Do you know how long the product is already on the market at IKEA?
@@berlinberlin4246 I certainly hope they don’t discontinue it! I actually had a similar worry, as the replacement filters themselves are out of stock all through the UK. However, the purifier itself is in good stock here, and the replacement filters are in good stock in Germany, so I’m hoping it’s just a UK supply issue. From a search the Uppatvind was released around March 2023. If they do discontinue it, I’ll grumpily design an alternative using one of their bigger filters, or find a different option. Ikea has the benefit of being pretty well established internationally so a good option for printed projects, but relying on one supplier is certainly a downside… Something to keep an eye on, for sure.

19:25 just remember about fluid dynamics reducing the airflow, which the T junction will impact! Your HVAC friend will be very useful here!
