LOVE how you explain everything step by step. Great video!
This tutorial was very clear and helped me mentally piece together other wallet DIYs that I've seen. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how everyone was creating beautifully finished seams on their pocked with the main pieces needed to be turned inside out for the finished garment. This tutorial helped me understand that I first need to layout the pattern to confirm on which ends I need to have the seams remained unfinished for the pockets until time to add the main wallet pieces.
You can do it! good luck :)
Great directions! Thanks for sharing this sewing project. Love it!
You are a great instructor. Your directions are always precise and very easy to follow. Watching your videos are a joy. Thank you for taking the time to share your special talents.
That was amazing! Thank you sooo much for the lovely tutorial! 💞💞💞
Looove the fun print will be doing wallets for my two sons and some as gifts for their friends as a summer project with my daughter. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent instructions; the wallet turned out just fine. (I did not use interfacing.) THANK YOU!
I used a heavy material for the out side and broad cloth for the inside. It came out great. Thank you.
nice! Please post a pic on our fb wall. I'd love to see it :D
That is so cute!! I love it! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this wallet. I'm new sewing and it was really helpful follow all the process. I need to say that maybr my interfacing was too bulky. Also I wanted the inside with a plain color and on the moment of cut all pieces I felt a bit lost, which one on your video is the "linning". Finally I saw it was the blue. Well as i said I'm new and I made mistakes. Second try will be better. ;) thx and get one vistual hug.
thank you for this tutorial and the measurements and going step by step, much appreciated especially when you are a visual learner.
Your video is very clear and easy to understand. Thank-you!
You are amazing........ Welldone..... just what I needed.
Very awesome project! Thank you!
Thank you for such a useful video! My first wallet has been made and I like it! I used the home decor fabric with no interfacing and it worked perfect!
nice! please post a pic on our fb wall
A great tutorial, well presented and explained. Thank you
Very well explained, thank you!
Thank you for your tutorial, you explained and showed each piece perfectly how to sew them together. A great video! You’re a great teacher and I have now subscribed to your channel. Thanks again 🙏🙏🙏
Great tutorial! Love the fabric ; D
Love it thanks going to make it tomorrow. Thanks great tutorial.
cant wait start this one,, especially for all store cards to keep separated. thanx again.
I love it, thank you very much...! Hugs from México!
thank you very clear to understand and i am a new fan
This is very easy. I plan to get some fat quarters for my younger grandsons and cousins. What I really want to know is if you have had any problems with connecting your Spiegel sewing machine to your wifi. I have had this machine for a while. I love it for being able to not have to use the foot pedal.
actually did the pattern a second time and made some changes using applique paper( heat n bond) and trimmed seam allowances before turning so the thickness around edges diminished and I think it turned out way better. gonna send pics of both to show
I'm so glad that you got it to work out for you! :) Heat n Bond is a good alternative! Thanks so much for the suggestion on making this project even better. If you want to send us some images you can just reply to the support ticket you sent. Thanks! :D
I am going to give it a try looks great
Making this tonight. I made a sunshine crossbody bag with the lovely bird fabric in your background.
very nice and clear so cute too. thank you.
Thanks for sharing just made one for my hubby
Now this I can relate to! I cant wait to try x
This is great!!!! Thank you!
Excellent job...
I am going to teach home ec and this seems like an amazing project to tackle with students! You're the best sewing professor 👌🏻😊
yay! I'm so glad to hear that. It does get thick so I would recommend a denim needle for getting through it. Or you can use less pockets or someone also said that using heat n bond instead of interfacing helps cut down on the thickness so it's easier on less expensive machines. good luck for your students! :D
Like a boss😀Thank you so much for sharing. Im mad inspired to make some Christmas cheese now😃 The possibilities are endless. Going to hit the goodwill for fabric and have at it. Thanks again, I smell money😄
Really cool. Imma try it 👌
Awesome, thanks so much!
I made one of these and like some others, did not back the credit card pockets...but the corner was still too thick. I just didn't like the look of it. I thought about it all night and decided to open it again and trim the seam allowance closer to the stitching. It turned out beautifully!!! I need to make 4 for my youngest grandchildren. It's a fun project especially because they are coming out so nicely! Thank you for the wonderful directions.
This is a pretty great and wonderfully easy pattern, HOWEVER, I highly recommend getting a VERY THIN INTERFACING. Alternately, perhaps you could skip the interfacing on the credit card pockets? That would get rid of 6 layers of interfacing, so I imagine it would help thin the wallet out, yet maintain form and function. I followed the video and used interfacing where it suggests. I used Pellon 808 (which I thought seemed thin enough, and it's what I had on hand) and standard cotton fabric. My finished wallet really wants to burst open because it's so thick. I haven't even tried closing it with stuff in it yet. :-/
Danielle Perdue I had the same issue and used light interfacing. My wallet was fat & bulky.
I would try sf101: i wonder how that would look 😊
Absolutely! Can't get it turned without ripping seam!!
I was thinking that with all these wallet tutorials like why are they using interfacing at all on the card pocket? Maybe it's to help beginners by making the fabric rigid?
I’m currently trying this same pattern with denim and no interfacing. Hopefully it’ll turn out good
Fantastic video. Thank you. This makes my must make list. Actually straight up to the top. Make great gifts as well. Will give one a try then if mine comes out like yours I will make some more up to give as gifts. Thanks for this..
This is a great idea for gifts! And it actually doesn't take too long to make. The trickiest part is sewing through a bunch of layers so I would recommend using a denim needle and taking it slow for the final sandwich. You can do it! :)
I think I will make two for my sons to carry money for school! Love it!!
nice job
I totally agree with the last comment I followed every instruction step by step after 4 hours working on it because I really wanted the wallet t come out neat. Anyway the wallet is too thick and unusable. I do suggest less interfacing maybe no interfacing for the credit card pockets they make the wallet too thick.
You can definitely leave out the interfacing. One of my first prototypes, was a version with less interfacing and mine felt too flimsy but it might work out better for you :)
It is wery nice, i will try to make one
Best video 🤗🤗🤗
Made 2 wallets with this pattern so far. First one with no interfacing--too flimsy. Second one with a lighter weight interfacing & quilting cotton, worked out fine for me. I like this pattern overall, but will make my next one with a couple changes. First i will try sewing the card pockets on before basting the large pocket together. I didn't mind that you could see the card pocket stitching through the bill fold, but i figure this wouldn't be a difficult step to integrate & this way the stitching will be hidden.
Also the card pockets were a bit too wide, so i sewed an extra couple of vertical lines parallel to the one she shows in the video. If you have the same issue & do this too, just keep in mind the seam allowance on the left side that comes later (i had to undo one line because of this & it left some stitching marks.)
Another thing i had to do was trim the final seams before turning the wallet out in the last step. Otherwise i would not have been able to do a proper top stitch as it would have been way too bulky to do so. I ended up carefully trimming the seams around the finished wallet, & trimming one layer at a time around the part with the card pocket seams. This did help in making the top stitching look much neater.
Overall i quite like this pattern & will make more wallets with it, since it's simple enough to fashion for kids & grownups, doesn't use up too much fabric (scrap-buster) & includes the cute little zipper coin pouch.
My main recommendation if you're trying it out, is to make your first one with fabric you don't mind wasting-- this project needed a test run for me to get it right, & judging by the comments, a few others didn't like how their first one turned out. A lighter interface for woven fabrics was enough for my liking without being too heavy. Something like a Pellon 911FF, Pellon es114, or the like.
I did everything you did on the tutorial. it came out super think and used the medium interfacing you said too. my material was quilting cotton. it was just way to thick. gonna try it a different way and will let you know my results
Mine was way too thick too. How did your second one turn out? What did you do differently? I was thinking of leaving all the interfacing out since it is already kind of thick?
i know you said this years ago but for thicker fabric, like quilting cotton, you use either very thin interfacing or no interfacing at all.
@@shannon2998 Greetings! Very true Shannon. I believe that seems to be what interfacing is for - simply to make up for thinner fabric used or dont use it at all if the fabric is thick enough. Peace to you and yours!
Great pattern. Thank you.
I did find a mistake though. On the diagram in the beginning of the video, the lg pocket piece was 8 x 10 1/2. Then later in the video, you started it was 81/2x10 1/2. I found that the later measurement must be the correct one as I had to short change my last credit card piece when sewing it down to make enough room. If you could make the correction at the beginning, it could save the loss of fabric and confusion. Thanks again, I will be making this again.☺
See the video description. Its addresses an error in the pocket measurements. I also added a card that pops up to notify users of the pattern change.
Thank You so much. I was looking exactly for this project. I'm going to make it in jeans fabric. Greatings from Venezia Italia, Ketty
Great wallet!!
now I just need money to put in it...
Thank you so much for the tutorial I'm trying to sew one without the zipper what are the sizes would be thank you
super.can you pl make a video on hiw to make a crossbody bag.easy one pl.thanks.
cool!
Do you mind demonstrating to us how to sew ready to sew adjustable dress straps on dresses & if possible how to make our own adjustable dress straps as well? Been looking all over UA-cam and have only came across how to make & sew binding/spaghetti straps, but none that demonstrate how to sew on & make adjustable dress straps with the little plastic clamp that allows elongation or shortening of the strap. Thought to ask you, since your videos are so easy to understand & follow. Thanks for your time :)
love all your videos! Definitely my go to whenever i need sewing questions answered.. I do have one question with this tutorial though.... the large pocket pattern piece is labeled 8" but when you are giving the directions you state that we fold the 8.5" side..... Just looking for clarification.
sorry about that. It's 8"
Pro tip cut the fabric out from a pillowcase and you can make enough to sell for about 1-2 bucks a pop
Great idea Yva Joy! And many pillowcases use a thinner type cotton - well, some do. I think I'll be trying a thinner type cotton for this project - may even try a couple of pillow cases lying around now. Peace be with you and yours!
Hi.
I love this wallet pattern. I have made at least 7 now. Wondering if you have a pattern for a ladies wallet?
Great stuff, I've been looking for a tutorial on DIY wallets! However, I like having two pockets in my wallet, one for bills and one for receipts etc. Can another one be added?
yup, you can totally add another pocket. Just layer it on the main wall piece when you're basting the pockets into place. Just realize that the more pockets you do, the thicker it gets to sew through. If your machine has a hard time sewing through a lot of layers or heavy duty fabrics, it might struggle through the thickness. Definitely use a heavy duty needle like a denim needle :)
Thanks for this great tutorial! Just made my first one. Turned out really well. I omitted the interfacing in the credit card pockets. I am going to make several more! I posted pics on instagram. :)
yay! I'm so glad it worked out for you :)
Did you interdace the outside layer..the main peice
wow I am going to make one of these God Willing. I love that pattern.
I used curtain material for mine thank you fab tutorial.. sorry i dont know how to add a photo.
cool! You can post an image on our fb page. :)
Imma hand sew this
i am going to make one great video
I just purchase a wallet purse at Target for $15.00. I will be trying this.
Very nice. I have a friend I'd like to make one for his birthday coming in a couple weeks. Now I just need to find fabric because I already have the zipper.
If you were going to embroider initials on this wallet, where would you place the initials? And, at what step would you do the embroidery?
I would do it on the piece that would be designated as the main wallet piece-front, that way it'll be on the outside of the finished wallet. Do it before sewing the wallet sandwich, where everything is being place together but you can temporally pin the sandwich together, wrong sides together, fold things up just to get a placement on where you want it to be. Just make sure it's out of the seam allowance area. good luck! :)
I made pillows out of my late husbands shirts, with fabric from his jeans I made the outside of the wallets and used the left over fabric from his shirts to make the card slots and lining. I gave my children the pillows and grandsons the wallets. I am trying to find a pattern for a purse for my granddaughters. I still have denim and shirt fabric.
Such a lovely idea using your late husband’s clothes for gifts for his children and grandchildren! May they treasure them for years to come.
Wow! I wondered why you didn't show turning this wallet right side out. Now I know why, there's no way I can get this thing turned!!! Not happy 😒
How would I attach elastic that would replace the Velcro closer?
I'd baste both ends of the elastic on the edge of the outer wallet section, before the lining. So when you add the lining, the elastic is sandwiched between the two fabrics. When it gets flipped right side out, the elastic will then be on the outside.
I hope you still answer questions! Large pocket when you are doing measurements you say 8x 10 1/2 then hook and loop you say 8 1/2 I’m gonna go 8 1/2 thanks
can you provide a timestamp of where in the video you are talking about. how many minutes and seconds in you are referring to, thanks
I just made this wallet and although I used a light interfacing it feels pretty bulky. I used a thin interfacing thou. Any suggestions? Love it btw
You can try skipping the interfacing altogether and see if that works better
and is there any substitute for the material ?
can you suggest any material which is thin as well as durable like some in plain weave ?
I can't think of anything that isn't like formal apparel fabric. You might inquirer at the fabric store. to cut down on thickness, you can skip the interfacing on the credit card pockets.
It becomes very bulky at the place where the card pockets are attached. Broke my needle.
I was looking for a good DIY wallet tutorial. I'm hoping to make my husband a new wallet when I get my sewing machine back. With all the comments about being too bulky with interfacing, I figure I'll just use denim (for the parts that need interfacing).
yes, for denim, don't use any interfacing and use a lightweight denim, not a heavy one or your machine might complain. You can do it! :D
awesome :) All my denim scraps are lightweight
Hi, is the large pocket piece 8x10.5 or 8.5x10.5. Your drawings says one thing and then when you start the tutorial you give a different measurement. Thanks
the measurements in the description are the ones that should be used.
I did this wallet twice and had to toss it both times. Even though I did not use interfacing it was still way to thick and impossible to fold. The first time the cc measurements were off, but the second I did them correctly but that wasn't the problem. The process was very stressful and wasteful.
I haven't received a support ticket from that yet all I have is the auto reply that says not to reply to the email
fixed, check your email.
Greetings! Thank you for this video! Where did you get that fun Shazam! fabric?
I got it at a quilt shop in oregon but you might be able to find it online: www.etsy.com/search?q=super%20hero%20kaufman%20fabric
Yay! can I leave off the zipper though?
yes, you can skip that step
Is this the correct size that would fit in a man's back pocket? I am thinking of making for my adult son.. thanks
Tanya Raymond i
I made one but it is way too thick. I wondered if I could leave out all the light weight interfacing or should I just skip it on the credit card pocket area? I would like to try it once again so want to know.
yes, you can try leaving out the interfacing
I used feather weight only interfacing for all pieces except the credit card pockets and it turned out better than the first one.
Does anyone know if you can leave the zipper out in this project?
you don't have to do the zippered pocket
I made this wallet. I don't like that it is too thick to fold. There needs to be an edit. Instead of cutting the interfacing the exact size of the pattern piece, use half the size of the large pocket and the credit card pockets. Also, the interfacing may need to not be included in the seam allowances.
what material should I use if I want it to be water resistant and will it still work with this instructions?
laminated cotton, but I would not add any interfacing as it doesn't need it. because this fabric is stiffer, it might be a little more difficult to work with and you might want to do 2 pockets instead of 3 just to cut down on some of the thickness.
okie, thank You!
hiii do u need arabic translation for more widespreading??
hai may i ask, how to make or setting your sewwing machine walk slow, mw machine walk fast it make me nervous.. hahha thnk btw i love your vid :)
my machine has a speed control and some machines don't have this. You might need a little higher end machine to have this type of setting. I would just practice sewing on scraps of fabric to get more confident in working with your machine.
Could you do a vinyl window in the bottom card pocket? If so how do you go about that? Just size it correctly?
Can I use batting ??
it might make it too thick and hard to turn out. if you try, maybe use a thin cotton batting
Can anyone clarify for me the sizing on the zipper? She says 3 1/2” finished. Is that the “teeth” part only? Or the entire length including 1/2” on each end? Thanks in advance!
yes, it would be the useable teeth part only....I say "useable" because if you shorten the zipper yourself there will be some teeth below your stopper still, so between the top at the tab to the stopper.
Professor Pincushion Thanks so much for the quick response. Haven’t followed patterns much in the couple years I’ve been sewing so I wanted to be sure. 🙂
Hi, do you mind telling us where you got the Superhero fabric? Thank you!
I love this fabric too! I actually got it at an indie quilt store in a tiny town. But google "superhero fabric robert kaufman" and you should be able to find people selling it online :)
Thank you so much!
I loved this wallet, I was confused on my pocket pieces for the credit cards I measured everything exactly, but when I measured 3/4down then 5/8 down on the third piece was hanging off the wallet about 1 inch. I watched the video and for the life of couldn't figured out what I did wrong. Anyone else have this problem?
Just line up the last credit card pocket with the bottom edge. As long as the pockets are cascading, it should be fine :)
Ok thank you
when i fold my 8" wide large pocket piece in half and then lay the credit card pieces on top the lowest one extends beyond the lower edge of the large pocket piece. What am I doing wrong?
hmmmm....how much is it extending past the edge? If it's just a tiny bit, just bump up the bottom pocket so the bottom edges match. As long as they're cascading and it looks good, I wouldn't worry about it. :)
+Professor Pincushion I ended up making the large pocket piece 9" x 10 1/2" and the ones that were 4 1/2" in your measurements went up to 5".
I totally ducked this up. I think the interfacing was too thick and then when I flipped it the side with the coin pocket was too thick, not flat.
really awsme..but I don't understand what kind of cloth u use this wallet..this one is cotton?..I really don't uderstnd..and u also use white kind of things and spry..can u plz tell me this things name, sister.. I m not so much. good in English but I m try my best.I think u understand 😞😞😞😞
yes, I use 100% cotton fabric and interfacing. But a lot of people felt the interfacing made it too thick so you can always skip the interfacing
can you please tell what material have you used in making this wallet ?
+Professor Pincushion won't that material make wallet thick at the end .? and also have you used a fission paper (sugar paper) for stiffness ? and last question is there any substitute for the material
someone said they use heat and bond and it really helped. You can also skip using interfacing or another stabilizer in the credit card pockets to cut down on the thickness.
By loop and hook tape, do you mean sew on velcro?
yes
I just don’t understand the coin pocket
The original size was 8", later changed to 8 1/2"
Yes it was, not sure which one is right
Is it just me or does the template say 8 by 10 and a half for the large but then she says 8 and a half by 10 and a half!!
The description has all the pattern measurements
Whos here in 2020?.
Warning ! DONT USE THICK INTERFACING! It won’t flip correctly.
Your measurements all seem to be incorrect which has created much confusion in completing this project. If you're going to leave it on UA-cam, you should make the measurement corrections instead of letting the subscriber figure it out through trial and error.
Yes, we realized our mistake and went through all the patterns. We just updated the description and it has all the correct pattern dimensions. I'm sorry that my mistake has caused you frustration. :( I hope you're still able to make yourself a nice wallet!
Ladies save yourself, don’t try this , you’re sewing machine will hate you!
