Hey all. You may have noticed no new videos from the channel for 2 weeks. Well, that's because our 9 week old daughter had to go out of town for open heart surgery to fix a hole in her heart. Really scary stuff and i just stayed away from all social media for the duration. She's doing much better now and i've come home. Steph will stay with her in hospital for a few more days. But she is recovering well. Thanks to everyone who has said nice things and offered up warm and happy thoughts for us. And, if you could, just go hug someone you love for me and tell them you appreciate them. Take care all.

As a parent myself, my mind is racing with concern, relief, etc. TLDR: I am so glad she is doing great and I don't want to pretend like I know what you are going through but I know it's hell and I hope the light at the end of the tunnel is bringing some inner peace!

Non-ironically one of my absolute favorite games. I only wish the creators of the game had made a more elegant way of shortening game length. Starting at 7 influence per the rulebook neuters the arc of the intrigue phase entirely. Best variant I could think of was start at 4 influence and move the endgame number to 10 influence (allowing you to accrue over 10 to build a "buffer" as to get knocked about a little less). This (especially the buffer rule) can get it to a solid 2-to-3 hours as opposed to the game's original proposition which borders more 3-to-5 hours (or if you start at 1 influence... it can get REALLY long). There is also a popular houserule where in the intrigue phase you may pay the face value of the next influence - so let's say you have 4 influence and want to move to 5 - you pay 5 coins to the bank. With the caveat that you cannot get to the endgame influence number via this method. This in theory scoots things along, but ofc losing all your money doing this can actually set you back harder than if you were to avoid doing that, as influence holds very very little value game-wide. Intrigue wise it does hold value, sure - but that's about it.
You finally got me to buy this. And then spend twice the amount I paid for the base game to buy one expansion. Now I pray that the old expansions can be mixed with the new edition of the base game 🙈
In all the times we've played this, I can't remember arena victories mattering much past influence 7 or 8. After that it's all special Ludus House rules (trade in 3 whatevers for an influence) or Scheme cards.

I was about to ask whether the new version toned down some of the language, and then you showed the Jupiter's Cock card! So I guess I don't have to ask anymore. :) Great overview. Would love to play this with you sometime.
@@3MBG it's amazing. Feels a lot like Blood rage, but is better in my opinion. The board evolves slowly during the game, there is negotiation, treachery, betrayal... That game, if it had another theme (Vikings or Pirates) would be in BGG's top 50! I love the theme, but I understand not everyone does. Do yourself a favor and at least check out.
@@FredAlleanKabaret it does not compare when it comes to mechanisms, but, as I've said, feels like it. In combat there is a tension of"call tu arms', you play pistols as cards in combat, you decide when and how to try to activate spot, etc.

That's pretty true. People tend to hoard inf gaining cards to do a burst at the end.

The battle part of this game i find tedious and repetitive, otherwise, it's a great game.
We find the gambling adds a bit to the otherwise not amazing combat
