I've been wanting to meet my mom's secret step family for years. The chance finally came up after I begged my Uncle 7 to take me down to My Tho to visit them. It was so surreal seeing how similar they resembled my aunts in America. I learned a lot about my maternal grandpa on that day and I'm proud and happy that I went down there even though it was against my mother's wishes. My family's story is not unique by far. Many Vietnamese families and other people in the world share similar stories. So this one is for everyone who has family issues. Try to resolve them. As much as my mom was against the idea initially, she ended up sending money anyways. At least it's a beginning. Better late than ever!!! It's a complicated situation. Every story has many sides. Just try to connect with your family. Even if it works or it doesn't work. Just try.

Your grandmother sounds like an amazing woman. Faced with many options she chose to stay composed and be a good role model to her children by demonstrating that two wrongs don't make a right. It must have been so hard for her, but her children were able to see first hand that life can be what you make it; that you can push on with a determined spirit and not let other people's poor decisions overrule your destiny. This example of a fighting spirit and determination to overcome hardship is what the Vietnamese are renown for.

I completely relate to your mom. I understand the curiosity on your part but she will always see it as betrayal to her mom is she gets close to them or if she forgives her father. It's something you'll never understand. Don't force the subject, it's painful.

Everyone is so quick to give opinions in the matter. If you haven’t gone through it, it’s easy to say “ forgive and forget”. My mum went through 25 years with my dad and only to be swapped after 2 kids and 1 grandchild with a woman she actually knew, who smiled and confided with my mum. It hurt her, the betrayal in both sides hurts. I will never forgive my father nor the women he cheated with. I feel sorry for the daughter they have, but it’s best to keep a distance because one day she will eventually know what they did. The kid is going to be hurt by all of this and they will have to explain their actions. I told my dad that I hope that life gives him and this woman karma, but life is so unfair that normally it’s the children that will suffer the most and get their parents karma. So, in this case this kid unwillingly will end up paying for my dads and the mistress mistake. I really hope it’s my dad and this women are the ones who gets karma instead. I don’t want anything to happen to the child but I don’t want a relationship with the child. The child mother and my father are the ones who destroyed my family and cased my mum, me, my brother and my nephew to feel hurt. The things he did and what the mistress said also added more fuel to the fire. No one can understand until they go through something like that.!

What an awesome video and tribute to your grandmother. She was a saint and a kind woman. It is a story of perserverance and survival. She was a strong, independent woman that did what she had to do to take care of her family by herself. I admire her strength. What a wonderful example she set for her family. She was an honarable woman. Thank you KyleLe.net for sharing your story even though it was painful.

Again, I'm loving these videos lately and the direction your heading in. Thank you to you and your family for sharing this story with us. In our culture, these things are rarely discussed so openly and I understand how hard it must have been for your mum to not just talk, but share this with us all. You can hear the pain in your mums voice and I understand why it's so hard for her to let it go. Technically, the children shouldn't have to suffer because of your grandfathers mistakes, but as they say, the sins of the father... Also interesting how your grandmother struggled so much and the mistresses side reaped all the benefits but looking in from the outside now, it seems your mothers side came through better off in the end.

I may be wrong, but the Kyle I used to watch seemed quite detached from his own family in Vietnam, yet now you've made a conscious effort to not only visit, but understand these "hidden" relatives. Seems to me you've really grown and matured as a person and I really like its in turn changed the direction of your videos too. Good job!

This video was really touching for me ... my grandfather had a second family as well. One that none of us have met, one that I was never supposed to have found out about, but accidentally did because i walked in during a private conversation between my mom and her siblings. But my grandfather never left. Either family. He was a hard man. Seemingly unloving and severe. Always sombre and serious. But he raised and took care of 10 children with my grandmother and who knows how many more with his mistress. And my grandmother is the most caring woman I have ever known. Like yours, my grandma loved all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I haven't seen her in almost 20 years aside from the yearly Skype session. And my grandfather has since passed. Watching your video has made me want to get to know his other family ... because i have more family! My children have more family ... that's an amazing thought.

  • @D_Red
    @D_Red 5 років тому +4

I got the sense that your grandpa's second family feel entitled to help from your mom when they've never done anything for her. I'm sure they were well aware they were living a good life while your mom and her siblings were not. They seem as entitled as their mom was when she lived on your grandpa's full check with no regard for your family. Your mom is very kind. She took you going to see those people you call family better then I would of.

This is among one of the many reasons I subscribed to you, the knowledge and insight you share with us all about Vietnam and the compassion you hold for the unfortunate. This video has helped me come to resolve with my own family issues as it relates almost entirely. Growing up, my father hadn't been in my two sisters' and my life for about 15-some odd years, I was always curious where he was during important milestones and then discovered when I turned 18 that he had another wife in Vietnam with children (my half-siblings) after having me and my siblings born. Thereafter, I grew a hatred and resentment towards him and the other family, but chose the path of "forgive and forget" especially because of the fact that my half-siblings obviously aren't part of the matter. However, I still held pain in my heart for my mother who suffered in so many ways that my siblings and I had to witness but knowing how strong and persevering my she is inspired me to be a better man today and onwards. This video is very mind-opening and uplifted my spirits in terms of wanting to visit my half-siblings one day, and with that being said, I just want to thank you Kyle for opening up on such a touchy subject and having the galls to embrace it, spoke volumes to me.

  • @kristervoo

Kyle, what a wonderful brave thing you did. Your story resonates so greatly with myself and my mom and in turn, her parents. I understand what your mother and your mother's sisters have gone through as my mom and her siblings went through the same thing.
Funny how sometimes the cycle never stops, as Annie Linh wrote previously, her father left her mother. My father left my mother and as such, being a product of such relationship, its hard to forgive one's father and even harder to, in essence, forgive the step siblings/half siblings. "Why do you love them more than us?" "Why don't you even visit, call or even care?" It 's hard to "forgive" them when they had the life you (or your mother) should've had, was taken because of them.
It must've been a huge deal for your mother to overcome this and graciously send money. Good on you for being a lovely son to her.

Kyle, I busted into tear when I heard you said: "Don't listen from 1 side, see it from different perspectives." Things might be hard to forget, but maybe your mom should learn to forgive. The letting the negative vibes living inside of her will actually a good thing.
Man, it's hard to forgive for someone who tore down your family, trust me I know how it feels. But here is my input, hardship and the endurance your mom and your aunts have been through made them tough, independent and that made them who they are. Besides, that was the past, that from the previous generation, something that we couldn't change. Taking a higher road and try to understand their story making you a better person(perhaps not having 9 wives) in the future. Great story Kyle, thanks for sharing!

The generations before ours were very complicated and it may be too hard to reconcile those people. But the folks in our generation and after are growing up in a different time with different values. Its there that we can start to mend the wounds and regain ties. Its brave of you to reach out when nobody else does and hopefully it makes an impact on the other people to start seeing the world differently -- especially the younger generation.

I haven't finished the video, but I have to tell you something: my Father, too, left me and my Mum for another woman. He ended up raising HER children, while I spent my teenage years crying for him because he just didn't want to see me. So I get why your mom, aunts and uncles don't want anything to do with your other family. You didn't lived it, so you can't understand.
But now, you're making me think about MY kids (in the future, when I have them). Are they going to look for my Father's family? (I don't speak to them, nor want any type of contact with them)… Will they be like you? Wanting to meet their other half? Only time will tell. But I love your channel. Your mom keeps it real. Just like my dad. He doesn't feel the need to reach out to people who don't think of him. Him returning would just mean $ and fake hospitality. He rather just enjoy visiting abroad then revisit memories that just bring up sorrow and sadness.

My grandma also have that same situation, my grandpa also left my grandma and my mom,8 uncles and aunts for years for another woman and raised her kids like his own. In 90s that woman left my grandpa with all of his money to America, he went back to my grandma with absolutely nothing but my grandma still has the same love, same emotion for him like in the pass.

A very toughing video Kyle. The story of your grand mother should be told to the entire world as an example of caring for others and determination to give her children a better life than she had. We can see that she acheived that and even more. I cried when you were in the alley and said taht there are 3 or more sides to every story because I could see how meeting these people had touched you, how it affected you. Thank you for sharing. After seeing this video, I can say that I love your grand mother too.

I have a great grandfather who also had a secret family back in Germany, maybe even two and it has always been a huge question mark in the family on who they are. We know of one of his kids names because he was in the same grade as my grandmother and he would ask her when he could have his daddy back. But the rest is a mystery as he died when my grandmother was 10. All that said, I wanted to commend you for putting the pieces of your family back together for future generations and for fearlessly facing it without judgement. The stories you will have to share with your own grandchildren will give them a strong foundation and a rich history, bravo!

You're such a brave man when you faced to the fact. Actually your mom had to spend the worst times when her dad left her family so she's difficult to accept the true. I think she need the time to heal her hurt in the past. It's good when they can exchange their munber and hopefully they will take a phone in the future.

I've had the desire to meet my mom's secret step family for a long time. Growing up, I heard about them here and there but nobody in America wanted to talk about it. Many years later, I finally convinced my Uncle 7 to take me to My Tho to visit them. It was very surreal to see how much they resemble my aunts in America. Meeting them allowed me to get to know my maternal grandfather a lot more. I honestly did not know anything about him at all. (He is not the same grandpa as my paternal one who went to France ua-cam.com/video/cKsC5Ck7QKU/v-deo.html) In the end, it's not right to blame anyone for things out of their control because every story has two or three sides. I'm just glad I had a chance to meet them and spend some time with them. I'm even more glad I got the chance to walk my grandmother's walk, something I've wanted to do also for years but the right opportunity never came up. I did not finish the walk. When it got too hot and time was winding down (a scheduled appointment in Saigon) I had to call my cousin. Even though I never met her, I wanted to create something to remember her, not only for myself or for you guys to get to know where I come from, but also for my own younger relatives. One day they can at least sort of see what their great grandmother, great great grandmother had to endure and get to know her a tiny bit better. Thank you for watching. If you have any issues with your family. Maybe try to resolve them before it's too late. Connect me with me on FB, Instagram, or Snapchat for a lot more. If you don't follow me on there, you're missing out on a lot!

Omg, your grandma walked that long with 30-40 kgs of sugar? Amazing strength. You walked with a backpack & you still couldn’t make it. Omg, your story sounds very similar to my mother’s and how her father had another wife & treated my grandmother really bad. He would hit her & live with the other woman. It made my grandmother go mentally ill for a period of time, but Buddha saved her because she was just a kind woman like your grandmother. I’ve been back to Vietnam many times & have met my grandfather, not a very likeable man. He has passed many years before my grandmother did. My beloved grandmother lived until 92 years old. I remember one year when I came back to put in money to rebuild her home, there was a lady there. I asked my sisters who that lady was, & they told me it was my grandfather’s 2nd wife. She was helping my grandmother out. They lived close by. Even my father had 2-3 wives. I understand it, but it doesn’t mean I accept it. I have like 4 step bothers & sister from my dad’s other relationships, but I don’t really care to know them much. I have met them. In Vietnam, everyone who knows you are from overseas seems to come out & say they knew you from when you were a kid, and are either an aunt or uncle. There are many with bad ulterior motives, like sucking money from you, & no matter how you give them it’s never enough. I only sent money home for my grandmother & my two blood brothers. We can’t save everyone & I am not responsible for my older families errors. It’s harsh, but sometimes all these family issues back in Vietnam can drive a wedge between families & the past never ends. I love your questioning on about “don’t they know when they sleep with someone, they will make her pregnant”? Kyle, in those days & even now, they don’t use or know what contraception is! Once a man takes a woman sexually, than he belongs to her. That’s the way old fashioned Vietnamese people saw it. That was life for them. Mum explained this to me. It’s odd to think that having many wives is acceptable, but to them it’s the norm back in those days.

Thank you for sharing this video. This will help many families and many people. I see the fractured relationships on both sides of my parents' families. The childrens from spouse one and and the children from spouse two are distant. Half brothers and sisters who are angry and want nothing to do with each others because of what their parents did. It's odd to meet aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings that your parents have powerful and painful memories of because of what their parents' actions. It's good to see you try to get a greater understanding of your history. Many of your viewers will connect with this taboo subject that we kinda heard about in the family but aren't sure and don't really know how to approach it with of the elders. Thank you again for sharing.

Thank you for sharing, Kyle! I realized that this situation was very common back in the time. As I grew up, I just discovered more and more secrets. It's a little different from my family that my grandma holds the grudge, not my aunts and uncles, and I know she would keep it until the day she leaves. The fact that my family (which includes my dad's siblings and my mom's siblings) is pretty much united, really caring for each other, helping each other so that all of us succeed in life. That's why it's like you said, I feel 'áy náy' when I know that my half-family isn't doing that well. Although I'm not close to them at all, I still feel something deep down my heart. Thank you again for an insightful video!
