  • 75 years after the end of the BERLIN AIRLIFT, Germany remembers at the biggest humanitarian air transport operation of the world at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim Army Airfield at June 16th 2024.
One unique part of the „Operation Vittles“ was the idea of Colonel Gail Halvorsen, pilot on a Douglas C-54, drop candys on self made small parachutes from his aircraft during his final approach at BERLIN-TEMPELHOF airport. Soon other pilots copied his idea to supply children at the fence at TCA, Tempelhof Central Airport by throwing sweets on parachutes from their aircraft, the operation „Little Vittles“ was born and one important part of the Berlin Airlift!
Since October 2008 the city airport BERLIN-TEMPELHOF, heart of the Berlin Airlift is closed. Also both other Berlin airports, where the aircraft’s of the Berlin Airlift land between 1948-1949 are already closed, so that‘s why the Germans celebrate the Airlift jubilee in Wiesbaden Army Airfield.
