I can understand people's reactions, but based on the comments, it seems as though a lot of people don't understand what they're doing. This is a homage to late '70s/early '80s post punk and NYC no wave, where the smooth flow and major chords of dance music are replaced by harsh transitions and cold, minor keys for a jarring effect-it's angular robot funk. Listen to Bush Tetras, Contortions, ESG, Dinosaur L, Jack Ruby, Liquid Liquid, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and, as many people have noted, Suburban Lawns, to get an idea of where they're coming from. You might not like it, but they're actually doing a great job of accomplishing what they're trying to do.
Interesting. I just barely discovered them on Henry Rollins' show on KCRW, where he typically plays an eclectic mix of punk and what not from the '70s until now. When I heard LITHICS on his show, I automatically assumed he was playing something from the late '70s-early '80s period, simply because of the feel and arrangement. I was surprised that they were a contemporary band. Cool stuff.
It's one of my favorite bands of all time. I have all their materials, on CD, vinyl and cassette. I love those sharp and cold riffs, the technicality of the drums and the deadpan voice of the leader.
you can hear that og american post-punk/no wave. everything about it is so spot on craft-wise. easily best contemporary post-punk band around and i'm lucky to go to see them live today in Prague
blows my mind how tight bass, guitars and drums are whilst being so loose!!!! and how hard vocals are used so rhythmically; i wish i could be as much of a badass of a woman like aubrey! inspiring shit
Theresa mentioned Talking Heads in another comment and it definitely reminds of the first half of Remain In Light, but i also wish Talking Heads went this far experimentally more often in their career
It's got a splash of Pere Ubu's Modern Dance innit, does it not? I certainly thought about Non-Alignment Pact when I heard her voice against that timing and rhythm.
Nico x Art Punk. At least that's the way I hear/see it. And I'm all bout this shit, just for the quirk factor. I know I'm wiggling in my chair as I take this in.
Clownsec Oh shit don't hear Arab on Radar mentioned much. I can see it but Arab on Radar are more like noise-rock, spoken word, and are poly-metric/odd signature asf.
Had to hi5 on AOR. Still my favorite band ever. AOR is the only rocktype band I know of to completely strip away all cliches of rocktype music and invent something entirely original. I love lithics but you can clearly hear influence. Arab on Radar had their own stage movements, their own guitar sound: clean tone, overdriving a tweeter cabinet: clean distortion. I personally love that Lithics have been basically described as amateur and untrained in music rules...AOR, thats just a bunch of noise. The joke is both on and lost by those listeners. When playing live they consistently perform note for note or half or wrong note recreations of their recorded work. These people are great musicians. They're doing us all a favor by providing an escape from clone music..even amongst the paint by weird numbers clones in their own genre. Just go check out AOR on 31G, their release on that label vs every other band on that label. Stark.
Nope it isn't, I could play all the parts of every instrument on every song. And even if it was very technically demanding, that wouldn't change the fact that it's sounds horrible and yet is pretty bland.
Well, friend, I'm actually not unfamiliar with Minutemen and Fugazi. It's pretty funny how this kind of stuff gets people comparing you to such great bands as Fugazi and Talking Heads. I have a pretty close point of reference for this: playing and improvising with people who do not really know what notes belong in what scales. The only thing they can is either play a random basic chord progression (check) or rhythmically pick single notes that don't fit at all in the musical context (check). I know it's not right to look at it only from a musicianship perspective rather than like a piece of music, but it gives you a pretty strong clue that there isn't any grand plan.

yeah dude, people just don't get it.

thanks, really.
right...🌟🤍
New Favorite Band.
It's one of my favorite bands of all time. I have all their materials, on CD, vinyl and cassette. I love those sharp and cold riffs, the technicality of the drums and the deadpan voice of the leader.
Glass of Water 0:14
Still Forms 1:45

Great band!!!! Love this!!!!!!!!!!
"Excuse Generator"and "Labor" my favourite songs
That classic post punk vibe that we need now more than ever! Just found this and i already dig them!
Hearing this for the first time in 2024. Love it. Are they still around?
Nah they broke up in 2022 :(
@JackSchreiner NOOO!
new album is almost out!!! 5/20. Such a great band, even better live.
they really don't deserve the hate, amazing band
no.
everyone likes different bands/sounds, just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good ;)
what hate?
Su tissue reborn .. she sounds so much like her its amazing.
you can hear that og american post-punk/no wave. everything about it is so spot on craft-wise. easily best contemporary post-punk band around and i'm lucky to go to see them live today in Prague
This band fucking awesome. What's wrong with you people
heard them tonight in Chapel Hill, N.C.---great live band!!! amazing, actually...
Some people in the comments need to be locked in a room with Captain Beefheart playing until they get it.
Or the Contortions, take your pick.
blows my mind how tight bass, guitars and drums are whilst being so loose!!!! and how hard vocals are used so rhythmically; i wish i could be as much of a badass of a woman like aubrey! inspiring shit
the greatness... astounding
Came across these today on a 6music (BBC) playlist, really stood out, it's like a well-crafted Pylon/Erase Errata thing, really impressed :)
I Love this band!!!
i just love them
I love how uncomfortable they are making people. Must be doing something right.
Just heard Tower of Age. Nice work.
Omg I fucking love this
Dan Gimberg it's rhythmic and intensely danceable with inventive riffs, the mixture of zolo (see XTC) and pronk (see Cardiacs) is done very well.
I just love how unique they sound
Theresa mentioned Talking Heads in another comment and it definitely reminds of the first half of Remain In Light, but i also wish Talking Heads went this far experimentally more often in their career
Albin Lundholm I too like how unique this sound is. It's what I love about art punk as an aesthetic, not just a genre.
first song reminds me Sonic Youth. I really don't like this band anyway.
Lithics ripssss. Keep it up!
Nice to see a group keeping PIL's guitar sound alive in 2017. Shame about all the dislikes. I'd be interested to know all their influences.
DEVO. there thats the influence. ;)
Man, I thought in DEVO too.
It's got a splash of Pere Ubu's Modern Dance innit, does it not? I certainly thought about Non-Alignment Pact when I heard her voice against that timing and rhythm.
yes & yes
This is still great music
oh yes such a good band
love the Drums!!
So angular it should come with a 'Sharp edges' warning sticker. 🔥
Theres a very 1980's New Zealand independent sound here, I love it
This is great! Very nice band!
Damn I love this so much
Suburban Lawns
Iago Brunetto my intial thought as well
THIS
totally, but that is a good thing.
not expressive and jerky enough
absolutely bonza rippa, this
A latter-day Magic Band!
d.e.v.o, talking heads, b-52s, gang of four, X, . all in one
No wave is back. I love no wave. What disturbs me then? Maybe that it's too obvious? Well, I like it anyway!
M. K. it's closer to zolo and pronk than no wave, it's not noisy or as jagged
Nico x Art Punk. At least that's the way I hear/see it. And I'm all bout this shit, just for the quirk factor. I know I'm wiggling in my chair as I take this in.
Very unique makes for a very captivating listening experience. Should open up for Primus.
very rad, very rad
anyone know who sharing pinks is? mentioned around 5:20 (-:
oh also lithics is it
Did everybody in the comments just watch the Lumineers live video and watch this next? Wtf.
everyone is just jelous cuz this band is better than theirs.
They should tour with DRINKS
1980 No Wave is cool again?
that Monotone... sounds familiar....... Babes in Toyland? who does that remind me of?? Ive heard that tone...... cant put my finger on it .........
well aware Kat was all over the place vocally, but that drone tone.................. its soooooo familiar........
scarce use of sweet melodies. i dig it.
Television, Voidoids, The Fall...
Suburban Lawns
U.S. Maple
Shame they're not on spotify
They are now.
Influences include Pylon, Bush Tetras, Raincoats, Nico, Richard Hell & the Voidoids and the list goes on. Smart music for smart people.
the music really reminds me of Red Aunts.
Getting some early Fall vibes here...........
This band is fantastic. Please argue with me.
Cole Schlumbohm not going to argue. I’ve been listening to this band nonstop since I saw them with Malkmus in Pittsburgh last week. So dope.
Experimental Awkward Punk
Cool! Like that! :)
あ~ん、胸がときめく音楽や
reminds me a bit of snakefinger and maybe a little arab on radar
Clownsec Oh shit don't hear Arab on Radar mentioned much. I can see it but Arab on Radar are more like noise-rock, spoken word, and are poly-metric/odd signature asf.
yeah I was mostly referring to the atonal guitar riffs, the feel of the band is completely different.
Clownsec Right on 👉😎👉
Labor is like an Arab on Radar song in slow motion, I hear it.
Had to hi5 on AOR. Still my favorite band ever. AOR is the only rocktype band I know of to completely strip away all cliches of rocktype music and invent something entirely original. They are either brilliant or very bad. It started as pretty bad for me but more I listen to them more briliant they are.
It's just that they started of so horribly, once later on half of the band started playing sort of cohesively it comes as such a relieve.
Sounds like Beefheart and Melt Banana
in this comment section: people who have never heard cool 80's music in their life
Super awkward interview though
How many songs did they perform? I counted one .
Kind of cool, Not the norm is ok.
damn her voice has no emotion at all its tripping me out
And that stare...!
Talking Heads's children ?
Pat on the drums
They are like a high school rock band that never got any better.
Gaba i agree.... they suck... for my preferences atleast
Gaba You must've heard some great high school bands in your days then
Albin Lundholm how could you love this?
Seems like the band is tone deaf
this is progressive punk, I'm sorry that it goes over your head. Try listening to Devo, Television, and Talking Heads.
How did there guys get a recording deal, words fail me
Then maybe stop using them
HAHAHAHA
Cant decide if i find it super creative and good or just Bad...
OMG what a wonderful genre! I can sing and play guitar like that too, honestly, am I a cool musician?
lol how is this a band
21 52 try and play the songs, it's prog punk (aka well above a plebians skill level)
Nope it isn't, I could play all the parts of every instrument on every song. And even if it was very technically demanding, that wouldn't change the fact that it's sounds horrible and yet is pretty bland.
Henk .is cool my sentiments exactly

Henk .is cool = Henk .is tool
Sounds a lot like "X" except without the guitar talent, or creative song writing, or vocal interest...
Yeah I've heard of DNA Mirielle Cervenka is Exene's (from X) sister... This can hardly be called no wave
i think the vocals kinda ruin it for me i hear the grooves and feel it but when she sings its very ehhh. lotta potential
This is what happens then people with no talent form a band.. Pretty sad really.
Sad!
lmao dis nigga watches paul joseph watson
This is what happens when people with very, very limited knowledge of post punk and no wave comment. Pretty sad, really.
And what are you doing?
bruh, ur life too!
awful
