- Yep, you read that right... the surround version of Dudelange is FINALLY available to buy!
Doesn't Charles-Marie Widor's 'Toccata' sound incredible on it??
Those people who already have the stereo version of Dudelange are able to download the update for free. Believe me, it's an ENTIRELY different organ!
I've been fortunate to have had early access to the surround version for over 2 years now, and it still astonishes me. This is simply the most realistic-sounding and most exciting sample set available for Hauptwerk. Nothing else comes close.
No, I'm not sponsored by Voxus and I don't receive a penny from them, but please check them out!

Thank you all so much for your comments, particularly about the tempo. I think this piece commands much more gravitas at this slower tempo. Why do you think people play it much quicker than Widor’s tempo marking?
It sounds just right at that tempo. One reason for playing it faster, maybe the main one, is when playing in really dead rooms. Perhaps the solution is not to play it in dead rooms.
@@beautyinsound
I think organists like to play the tempo they feel comfortable with. You see that with Bach too. It is beautiful when a prayer is carried and played calmly. If it is played quickly I stop listening..
A Toccata needs no added gravitas. That's for the Bach b minor (too often sung by too big choruses.) Toccata means 'touch,' not ''dirge.'
One note about the "speedy tempos" that others play at ... "HEY! See What I Can DO? Isn't It Impressive?" That attitude so many times sticks out like a sore thumb.
Magnifique tempo ....exactement comme ça..réf Pierre Cochereau..
The tempo is perfect. You can hear what is going on. I think most people play it fast to show off I'm an organist and this pleases me a lot.
Thank you!!!!
Thanks for this perfect pace..... and for sharing.
What a perfect tempo! So nice to hear it not rushed. Much appreciated!
Possibly the best tempo I’ve heard this piece played at- and I’ve listen to so many let alone my numerous attempts!😂🎹😊👍
YES!!!
And all played from memory....now that's impressive 😮
Absolutely no sign of Covid brain fog from across the pond 🤷
See the comment from thewilliamtan above.
@@Chuck-Pat They lacked large numbers of people saying "it's not real," "it's not really that dangerous," "masks don't help," and/or "don't get the vaccine, it's an evil plot."
Everyone plays it from memory in a concert setting. No big deal. Rookie comment.
Absolutely sensational !!! BRAVO - I've been an organist for over 60 years and this is the best of the best for this piece. I had a chance to hear a recording of WIDOR himself playing this - and it was at this very tempo! THERE WERE DO COMPUTERIZED DIGITAL ACTION ORGANS 200 years ago - BACH would never play his own pieces at the breakneck speeds a lot of contemporary organist use..... SLOW DOWN GUYS - IT IS NOT A RACE OF THE BLACK BAR AT THE END OF THE LAST MEASURE!!! I would love to see you Richard start a new segment: BACH AT BACH'S TEMPO!!!! i bet it would become an instant classic! i know i would tune in!!! God bless you, Richard, Fr. Bill here!
Oh how refreshing to hear it played at a slower tempo. Too many organists play it way too fast and you just can't savour the magnificence of it properly. That was just brilliant Richard - and from memory. Bravo bravo !!
I NEEDED THIS today.... tears rinsing my eyes as this majestic piece was our wedding recessional! I wanted to stop ½ way out of the church to listen to the entire thing. May our Sovereign Creator enable us to create just a fraction of Widor's talent. Perfect tempo - except I need larger speakers.
The Finale from Vierne's 1st symphony was our recessional. My wife and I after getting to the back of the church went up in the balcony to hear it all!
Grand Choeur Dialogue (Gigout) was ours - I wanted to quit greeting people and steal away to the back of the room to soak it in undistracted. But that's not how weddings work. ;)
Finally, the Widor Toccata at the right tempo. Gives me goose bumps. Bravo
That smile... and then the pedal BRAAOOOOOOAM :-) Lovely!
Perfect performance with a perfect tempo. Not too rushed like so many organists here in America. Bravo!
The addition of surround sound is, indeed, tremendous, as was your playing!
When the bass line comes in WOW!!! Spine chilling ✨ Thank you for this beautiful performance! 💗
Amazing recording (especially the tempo!). This reminds me of the recording by Jos van der Kooy on the Muller in Haarlem (which I imagine is quite a workout for the fingers), which uses the exact same tempo. And that, Richard, is for many dutch organ lovers the greatest compliment one can recieve as an organist!
I have that CD (bought it in the Sint Bavo gift shop some years ago).... so good!
@@jv04jm I only saw the tocatta on YT. Have the Piet kee Bach cd though: the Wedge and BWV582 on one disc with registrations (exact) per measure in the booklet!
It’s also similar to Johann Vexo at Nancy. It’s on UA-cam.
@@Todd1356 Indeed that is an amazing recording as well, played from memory in true French style. Makes me wish there where some CC’s in Holland
Thank you Richard Amazing for taking me back to my childhood memories in church 1970 ish so wonderful to hear GREAT
Marvelous! Perfect tempo! One of my all time favorite pieces by Widor!
Oh what a beautiful treat you give us in this playing..God bless you and keep you 💫💐🙏
Perfect tempo! I loved every minute!
Wow fantastic Richard! I also love this tempo!
Majestic, wonderful, I agree with everyone, tempo is perfectly measured.
Thanks Richard, It's that Competent Organist at work again. A true professional at work and from memory. Merv
Brilliant use of volume contrast, Richard. I love the very distant and faint section right before the finale. You never cease to impress.
This recording conveys not spectacular virtuosity but rather majesty and splendour.
Best tempo ever !!
You looked like you were enjoying yourself there Richard..😄. We certainly enjoyed your performance!!
Great! It is the tempo that was requested by Widor!
Fantastically played and just the right tempo. The best Widor on UA-cam ... respect and thanks
An excellent performance, Richard!! And the perfect tempo. Those that play it so fast are trying to hide their mistakes, IMO.
You play this at the same tempo the Charles Widor did. The recording is on UA-cam as well. Love your work.
I admire the tempo - it works very well for me and gives the listener time to enjoy the reverberation. This piece is often played faster and can become too compressed.
Thank you so much. Saw some one else play this at the correct tempo and it's so beautiful
How FABULOUS!! Tears to the eyes....
A superb performance Richard! Dudelange Surround sounds incredible. Perfect tempo as well :)
Sounds awesome. So authentic.
Always a crowd pleaser for a reason. For me organist are the super-musicians and super human. One of the most amazing concerts I have been to in my life-and I’ve been to a lot - was Paul Jacobs at the Disney concert hall in LA-- that will be with me the rest of my life-super human!
I heard Paul Jacobs years ago in a rural church on Maui and he was amazing.
Excellent speed for this piece.Thank you.
Great hearing this performance.
Delightful. Not exactly sure that surround gets broadcast on YT and comes out on my Surround Capable AppleTV as you sent it, but I am thankful for all the work that you do, as well as the good folk at Voxus.
Herrliches Stück und im richtigem Tempo gespielt...Klasse...
First time I heard my dad play this my jaw hit the floor. This always reminds me of him. Thank you for recording this.
AWESOME, as always , Richard. Love this piece and you played it so well. Don H
Awesome Richard, the (almost mischievous) expressions on your face were perfect!
Richard, would you be willing to give us viewers a special youtube video as to what you have for audio equipment and speakers?
Thank you! Great recording!
I'm guessing for a video like this you would record directly from line-out rather than use speakers and microphones?
Obviously he would need speakers to hear what he is playing
Right, we have THE good tempo !!! Thanks for this moment !
..yes. after hearing the old recording of Widor and Xavier Darasse (at St Sernin) performing this work I performed this as a recessional and once for a wedding procession at this tempo. It gives this work a very wonderful grand character.
Back in the day when I was taking piano lessons, my teacher had me sit on the organ bench with them while they played this piece. It was the same tempo in this video and ever since then, versions that are of higher tempo just seem rushed. Thanks for taking the time to create your video with the right tempo 😁
I've heard many performances of this piece and this is one of the best. I can't speak. Your face at the end says it all. Those closing chords always get me. Utterly brilliant.
I have just one recording of this played as steadily as you do. It was a privately issued LP from 1978 illustrating the Blumlein recording technique, and included the Toccata played at High Wycombe Parish Church (All Saints) by Alastair Ross. I have read that the tempo was partly chosen to accommodate the action of the organ - a Henry Willis III from 1930 (currently largely unplayable in spite of a rebuild by Bishop in the 1980s, like the quite similar organ in St Mary's Minster, Reading, on which I learnt to play).
love this piece!! and this tempo!!
This was nice. I could feel you really enjoyed playing this.
It truly does sound magnificent!
The reverb is heavenly. I keep coming back to this. While I agree that what I’ve heard do far from you if St Mary Redcliffe is fantastic, I’m having a hard time seeing it as better than Dudelange. I’d also love your thoughts on Southwark Cathedral, since you said it’s the finest organ in London. That has it knocking both Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral out of the park. And how do you compare it (good, bad, and otherwise) to St Mary Redcliffe?
The organ, the piece and the performer utterly and fantastically awesome!!!!!!!
Best version I ever heard! 👍👍👍 Many thanks!!!
I love this slow PROPER tempo. Good time to enjoy every note.
Wow! Wow! WOW!!!
That was fantastic! Your tempo was perfect, and that sample set is stellar!!
Fabulicous , yes that’s right. With my new sound deadening ultrasonic stereo earbuds is like sitting behind you in your leisure chair 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My favourite organ piece. I first heard it when I was at college, played by my friend Geoff Bowyer on a local church organ, St. Mary's Twickenham. That was back in 1972!
Bravo. Just like Widor play it. Más rápido sólo es fardar.
Enhorabuena y gracias por compartir
Perfect. You can actually hear the valves actuating. Well played.
Absolutely ADORE THE PEDALS CONTRIBUTION TO THIS...
Excellent. This is the tempo I love and play it.
This is just outstanding
Widor's Toccata and I Vow to The My Country are two of my favorites.
Superb and majestic. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Bravo my favourite piece, first time I have seen the fingering thank you.
Wow! Amazing sound! I noticed that your shoelace came undone again like during the Vierne. 😂 Also, love when you photoshop the iPad out. Quite impressive. Thank you so much!
No iPad used in this video 💪🏻
That lets the cat out of the bag! I was so engrossed in the music that I hadn’t noticed the page turn gestures! All clever stuff.
@@beautyinsoundI thought you turned a page at 1:08 and 3:40.
@@beautyinsound impressed
FANTASTIC tempo!!!
amazing wow
perfect tempo for this piece
This is the most perfect tempo ❤
Today Thursday lunchtime I am enjoying the organ music
🎶 Thank you
Perfect tempo!
Fantastic on every point
Nice haircut Richard and of course your playing! Cheers from Wisconsin USA!
Perfect tempo according to what I've read Widor himself took this somewhat slower then what has become the norm today
Sublime sound, thank you❤
Tears of sheer joy ❤streaming down my cheeks throughout.
Bravo maestro, bravo !
Magnificent, Richard!!
At last, the RIGHT tempo, and not an F1 qualification session, thank you)
Wow, sublime.
Magnificent!! How on earth does this have only 751 (including mine) likes? You can see the camera shake when you drop in the big stuff.
PERFECT! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Magnificent 🎉
Just fantastic. ❤
I enjoyed this very much Richard. Since I have recently been studying this piece I probably studied your recording rather too closely and spotted some alternative note choices in LH in bars 37 and 38 (3 min. 7 sec. into the video). I admit Widor's harmony has always puzzled me here where the LH arpeggios go down to E during the F# major harmony (so F# dominant 7th 3rd inversion) in bar 37, then more strangely again going down to E during the G# dominant 7th harmony in bar 38, but I like the sound of it. I notice that your LH arpeggios go down to F# in bar 37 and G# in bar 38, so fitting a more conventional view of the harmony, but not what is notated in any of the editions that I have looked at. What is your view of this? Are you considering those LH E notes as errors that go back to the first edition, or do you simply prefer the sound of the more conventional harmony that you play?
Magnifique 🤩🤩
Magistral!
Insane, 😺🐾💖🇨🇦💞💕♥️❤️ sounds so real!!
This modified tempo brought me to tears. Simply beautiful and majestic. ❤😢 #I❤RichardMcVeigh
Lovely performance! The score indicates almost every manual note as staccato. I like this subtlety, and it is only possible at a comfortable moderate tempo. And it sounds funky played at a moderate speed! And you have to account for the reverb of the acoustic chamber, so don't turn it into a moosh!
Love this
Beautiful performance and perfect tempo. You can hear all the nuances of this piece when played at a tempo such as this. Organists that play it at mach 5 with their hair on fire (Bish) do not get that they just turn it into a muddled blurred pile of …. sound
Sounds great indeed, very realistic (and that's what it's all about with HW).
WOW!!!!!❤
This always makes me weepy because David Dahl played this for my wedding on the Mighty Flentrop in Seattle circa 1980
E Power Biggs played it at this tempo and this is perfection!
Great tempo, and similar to how Widor himself played it (there's a video on youtube but I can't locate it).
The slower the tempo, the more it offers the opportunity to magnify Widor's articulation and markings.
Most organists overlook them after the first couple of bars and then they dissolve into a general "wash" of sound.
Were you convinced by your articulations throughout?
