I actually did this with one part of War and Peace. I just went forward closer to the end and I just briefly scanned the page for familiar names and found what I thought was a spoiler I was crushed by that situation, almost put me off reading it for a while and then days later when I came to that part it turned out that I misunderstood it, the page before explained the situation, it was a sweet surprise, since then I learned my lesson😭so no jumping forward
I'm from Russia and I had to read War and Peace twice from cover to cover when I was 16 for my literature class. Our teacher was crazy about this book and we had to know it to the smallest details. Me and my friends kinda hated it, just because our teacher was very harsh and didn't want to hear any opinions that were contrary to her own. But we coped with our frustration by rooting for the "bad guys" like Ellen and Dolohov and making up backstories for them about how they were just misunderstood. It was actually really fun and I will always have those shared memories with my friends, like a collective trauma😅 However, the book is quite moving and deep, and I grew to love it despite being really sick of it. And it always annoys me a bit when people dismiss it as incomprehensible. So I'm very glad you are enjoying it💕
Listening to you talk about War and Peace has given me the courage to go ahead and get it. It's been a book I've always wanted to read but being so chunky definitely scared me a little. But alas, I am gonna do it !
It took a couple hundred pages to really catch my stride and have all the characters and their relationships established well enough to get some flow going... for me it was the kind of book that I had to work at on my first read through but now I can just pick it up and flip it open anywhere and get carried away By the way the BBC miniseries from the 70's is a great watch (a young Anthony Hopkins plays Bezukov!)
I've just started and feel nervous about it. Anna Karenina is my favourite book and I strongly believe Tolstoy writes human emotion better than any author.
I haven’t read the book but the way it’s affecting you is so beautiful to watch. I may be missing out on the genius of Tolstoy but watching you is all the joy I need right now :)
War and Peace blew me away; I really couldn't put it down. so many different characters have been described in detail as if you know them inside out like your close friends.
I finished the book three weeks ago and when i read the last page i literally looked at the invisible camera that was pointing at me cause i just couldn't believe it was over lol. So I really enjoy watching these vlogs cause i get to experience the book one more time through you! :)
EMMA! EMMA! Please make a video on your annotating guide for War and Peace! Pleasee? Pretty please??? I watched the Phantom of the opera one and it was a masterpiece!! Also, Tolstoy Diaries is just...*chef's kiss*
"Did you know... That if you just go on and on recalling memories, at last you'll begin to remember what happened before you were in the world." As a twin, that quote hit so different because I actually do have a memory of being in the womb. It's one of my most treasured memories and seeing that quote made me think of it and it brought me indescribable joy. Thank you for putting that in the video. It truly made my day :) Also, you should be an audiobook narrator. Your voice is so soothing and I could listen to it forever :)
this tolstoy diaries series is my comfort watch, when i need a hug i find myself here watching one of these. at this point i know what happen in every minute of these videos but still im here again. thanks a lot emma
Watching your War and Peace vlogs really inspired me to want to read it too, and just today I popped into my local charity store and found Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Anna Karenina on the shelf how lucky was that!!! Anyways, I can’t wait to begin reading them
Love your emotional honesty. Your connection to the book is so palpable and very inspiring. Yes, I wish you would do a video of how you annotate books. And maybe how you choose your editions, especially with translations?
After I read W&P I couldn't stop listening to the BBC mini-series soundtrack! Couldn't get over it. Such a great idea of listening to it while reading the book :D
I absolutely adore your desk setup now , now that it faces a window . I imagine it would be so much better than staring at a wall when you're tired , plus with 3 giants of shelves behind you filled with textual worlds is a dream . @emmie
Idk how you guys feel about musical but Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 is soooo good. it’s based on war and peace. it’s not a traditional musical...at all. highly recommend.
You are such a precious little person! I just love the calmness and peaceful exterior you just exube of! I wish i could be like that.. You are such a vibe~~
I read war and peace these past few months for the T vs D book club, and i really enjoy the tolstoy diaries, especially as i'm reading the book with you, so as i read a part i get to hear you talk about it. it really helps processing what i just read, and it's nice to see what other people focus on in their own reading. what i'm trying to say is that these vlogs are great and i'd love for you to continue with them for the next books of the book club :)
I have no idea how u do this , but every time you talk about a book that you’re reading you make me want to instantly go grab it !!!! Howwwww . Btw you’re amazing
after watching all of these, i'm starting to think that i might have to make war and peace my summer holidays mission! beautiful video as always, i've absolutely loved it
Everyone is doing dumb stuff because everyone is lost, and they all hide behind vain delusions to compensate for it. Andrew and Pierre’s struggle comes from a different understanding of the world, an image forming after a series of disillusionments, and they find it hard to latch onto something because they experienced the loss of frivolous beliefs. It is a philosophical book for a reason.
I have so loved watching you read this. It's one of my favorites, maybe my favorite. I think you'd like Proust, they have similar writing styles, in a way.
U have soo much patience ...like I wish I had the same amount of patience that u have ..like slowly read through the book and savour the content than just trying to finish the book
Hey, I just recently started reading novels through recommendations of yours as well as others. I just picked up “One Hundred Years of Solitude” hoping to really dig it, thank you! The book or manga I should say that ultimately got me INTO novels though, a college student who was never interested in reading for as long I can remember, was called “Berserk”. I mention this random series to you now after just recently hearing of the great author’s passing, may he rest in peace. This dark fantasy about causality had been ongoing for about 30 years up until this very moment and influenced many things I see in many other stories today, even beyond it’s own medium. All I’m trying to say is take note of the series at the least. The story is definitely not told in the typical fashion that your used to, but that’s the exact reason why I think it’d be cool for you to check out sometime with an open mind. It is quite intense in its themes being that trauma is a big part of it, so I advise heavy trigger warnings. It’s a manga, which is a Japanese written graphic novel, that is told from right to left. It may appear kiddish, edgy, what have you, but I assure you not in the slightest, as it covers deep and complex themes at it’s core. I recommend this to you out of curiosity on not only your thoughts of this wonderfully crafted character driven tale ( the main character specifically and the ‘love triangle’) , but also on the different style of storytelling that I get the feeling you never experienced before, I could be wrong though. It’s a story of the struggles of life, carrying an unbearable weight, existentialism, betrayal, and more. If your one for art then you’ll be really blown away by some of the panels found in this book as it goes on too because its really magnificent, especially considering manga authors draw everything themselves too such as with this case. Much like a movie or show, visual storytelling or rather ‘show don’t tell’ is very much present in the character’s facial expressions and gestures too. If you ever did pick it up (or even saw this comment) I would say to look past just the gore and extreme horrors of storytelling used in this series to see the deeper themes it is trying to convey and I promise you a meaningful story lies ahead. I know your a seasoned and mature enough reader to take serious complex and disturbing things told in stories, and I think “Berserk” for the most part handles that stuff very well. At the very least read to the end of golden age arc in the story if you ever decided to give it a try. Anyways though if you even bothered to take the time out of your much busier day than I to read this essay of a comment then I thank you just for that. I also plan to read “War and Peace” too, especially since it looks to be quite enjoyable for you and many! Hopefully it won’t be too hard a read for me! Thank’s and have a good one, keep it up.
I've just received a copy of this edition as a birthday gift . I just love the front cover and cannot wait to start reading .I'm interested in your annotation system, I just don't know where to start.
I agree, I find that War and Peace has a lot of Tolstoy's philosophy and I think as you have mentioned that it was not meant to be just purely a novel but more of his worldview and his theorising of why things are the way they are.
Hello emma thank you for being a source of comfort in these days i just wanna demand if you could read about palestine and what’s happening there...thank you
Love the sailor moon necklace! 🤣 and your constellation sweater. Love these vlogs! All your videos but I really want to read W&P now to see how much your loving it. I was worried about the slow parts would be difficult for me to get through. I’m only just realizing that slow parts in books are slow and monotonous for a reason it’s realistic but still easy to get bored and distracted. Any tips on pushing through? I tend to get stuck and not want to pick up a book in these times last book just room me 95 days to get through 🤣 no time for that!!
Please, I'd love to hear you speak some French in your next videos 🙏🙏🙏 Plus Tolstoy briefly stayed in Paris in 1857 so you sorta have to.... Ça ferait tellement plaisir à la communauté francophone (oui, nous sommes nombreux. Si si...) 😘
Officially Helen has died from angina, but some critics came up with evidence that the real reason is unsuccessful abortion. I can't really remember what they wrote (I read it years ago for my exam) and all materials are in Russian, but I just thought this information would be interested to hear. Sorry for my mistakes, English is not my first language... I'm so glad that you are appreciating Tolstoy, many people don't like Anna Karenina and consider it dumb love story, but the psychological aspect is what make the book so deep and authentic:)
I’m currently listening to the audiobook and I’m having such a hard time comprehending what I’m listening to 😣 I think this is going to be one that I’ll have to read from the page to process fully.
Hello from Russia! I'm very happy you like our literature! You would have liked it much more if you had read it in the original because Tolstoy is a master of language. It was really interesting to hear how Tolstoy sounds in another language. I hope you'll read something else from Russia! Russian literature can really be emotionally hard describing suffering, but there is always an idea of love, kindness, and light behind it. P.s. sorry for my mistakes in English :)
Many scenes in this book have sent shivers down my spine! (Spoiler warning ahead) I just finished reading the section where, amidst his overwhelming spells of madness, Pierre ran to save a little girl amidst the burning flames of Moscow and looting crowds of French soldiers. Wow! Talk about setting a powerful scene.
Currently on page 861 and cannot belive that every page is so interesting😀 I was expecting that war pages will be boringish but even they are super interesting!
If Holden Caulfield could only sit down with Ellen, and have a long talk with her. I liked the hunt part. It was neat to see all the characters out and enjoying nature. That was fun. Then the little party at uncles place was tender, beautiful, fun. It seemed a last glimps of fun and serenity before 1812 hits the fan.
I read War and Peace over the last winter break and I loved it but also had similar gripes with Tolstoy’s philosophical and political musings. My undergrad was in poli sci/philosophy and (as well as him having a bit too much repetition) I found a lot of his ideas to be based on unwarranted assumptions. The story was phenomenal though. Example: at the burning of Moscow, he makes an argument for seemingly no reason about how there was no arson. I remember making a note saying “really, Tolstoy?!”
To read this book abridged would be a crime! lol It's unlike any other "book" I have ever read because it's the most panoramic piece of expression and such is life and it's brilliant! One should read this book not ever thinking when one will reach the end page, or what page one's in... or tedium will sit by you. I think.
I read this many years ago and I wish I had used bookmarks! Another 'monster' book is 'Quiet Flows the Don' by Mikhail Sholokhov. Set during the Russian Civil War it follows the plight of the Don Cossacks, their families, and their villages amongst the river landscape and steppes. Well worth giving it a try.
When you're done with the book, you should watch/listen to the 1956 movie version (directed by King Vidor and starring Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer).
Emmie, you really knew what you were doing putting Tom Hiddleston in your thumbnail, didn't you? Thanks for making this series, I'm contemplating tackling this tome next year, and I can really use the encouragement lol
@21:30 I just randomly paused and saw “Armenian girl” we love to see it!!! I wonder if he talks about Armenians more in war and peace, this intrigued me more!!!!
Watched your classics video and some of the other diaries videos. Have you done a video on your annotation style? I would love to know how you keep track of denser content especially when taking account into older writing styles make reading slower and different

This book is like a journey that's super hard but is worth every second in the end.
Not that hard, but it is long. It takes the greatest warriors Time and Patience to get through it.
