Linus I really love this channel, always covering my most curious topics. All the time I receive a notification of a new video I'm like, *"That's just about what I wanted to watch next!"* . Thank you...
Twitter introduced hashtags? NOT! "The pound sign was adopted for use within IRC networks circa 1988 to label groups and topics. Channels or topics that are available across an entire IRC network are prefixed with a hash symbol # (as opposed to those local to a server, which use an ampersand '&')." -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashtag
Linus forgot to mention Orkut, which was huge in Brazil & India. In 2009, it had nearly 30 million users while Facebook had just 4.2 million. It was acquired by Google; so, in a way, it was their first ever social network.
Also early on in the Internet era, there were people creating Angelfire pages and Geocities pages, I went with a less popular Homestead page, but Homestead still exists to this day, but no longer seems to offer a Trial membership, but early Trial members were grandfathered in, and still retain their limited membership tier. Of course now I just use my homestead site as a custom start page with several button links that I recustomize every few months, sort of a Visual Bookmarks page that pops up everytime I open the browser or go 'home'.
I was actually introduced to social media via hi5, which was very popular in my school back in 2007/8. Most people didn't have internet connections back then, myself included, and so I gave my password to a friend who did. To you know, use it occasionally. Damn I feel so old.
There was a social media site in Hungary, way before Facebook or Twitter was born, named IWIW. It had almost half of the features that today's social media sites use. Messages, posts on other people, clubs (groups), timeline etc. Sadly, site had to be closed after literally every user left to Facebook. I saw as my Friends deleted their accounts, and over a week there was none. RIP IWIW
my first social media account was xanga back in the day. the year 2003!!!! just before i graduated from highschool. it was basically just a simple extenstion of all our high school trash talking of each other, combined with a blog, combined with the ability to post pictures and stuff
wow, been a huge fan of LMG for a while now and i just got sent to this old video for a class for an assignment on the history of social media. GJ guys.
You were starting to wrap up and I was about to comment that you forgot the Google one I can't even remember the name of now. Then you chucked it in. Nice
basically TunnelBear got a Lawsuit of 200 million $ on there hands for using images of copyrighted material on their website, so they cut ties with many advertisers like Linus Media Group until they get this sorted out
My god, I remember the "web design" of the late 90s, early- and mid-2000s. The embedded midi tunes that play automatically with no way to shut it up other than to unplug your speakers in fury. The rapidly sparkling gif backgrounds. The gaudy borders around every single element on the web page. I'm so glad we've outgrown all that garbage.
Tushar, that was in 2004, the year when Orkut was created. It was designed to be used in the US, it was created in the US, of course most of it's user-base was in the US .
Orkut was huge back in the day when I was in school actually. Facebook came much later among the people here. Also, Facebook was created to rate girls on their hotness quotient which is a complete asshole move.
In Finland we had the site called IRC-Galleria, and in here it was most popular social media till facebook came. it was open for public in 2000 and I think it's still running but not sure.
I’m surprised that there was no mention of the recent Facebook scandal involving Cambridge Analytica. After all, the outcome of this scandal could definitely change the landscape of social media. (And that’s not to mention how people involved in the founding of many social media sites have come out against using social media.)
Patrick B seems like someone has seen the social network. Also, that was called something different. Not Facebook. It had a face in it but I don't remember the rest
The original application was basically a hot or not application for Harvard girls. It was not truly delving into what we would consider Social Media until it became "The Facebook".
I'm not on any social media. I think it's stupid. If you wanna talk to me, call me. If you're in a place you can't talk, that's what messaging is for. The only thing I can understand social networking for is sharing photos and videos which you can do with a few media apps.
My experience with each... Friendster = great idea, site was damn slow though MySpace = user pages were annoying to visit with a hundred customizations each Facebook = nothing was that "innovative" about it but they made social networking clean and not annoying and have since added innovative features Linkedin = the social network everyone has but never uses Twitter = only useful because EVERY celeb and company uses it but I have no desire to tweet or follow my friend's tweets Google+ = tried it for a week but Google has given us no reason to use it instead of FB
We need a social media system that is every bit as usable as facebook but without censorship or data-mining potential. I see crypto/blockchain being involved.
Dang... I'm older than Linus. I got into PC before Linus and more likely I have build my first PC before Linus. And yet he knows more about PC than I would ever know lol
bump...never heard of orkut until now.....barely heard of friendster in name. really only heard of and used myspace for games and facebook until it went down the drain so quickly and turned into a trash heap of ads and unecessary shit.
Our English school book (Green Line 5) was written in the 2000s and there is the topic social media. And they're talking about mySpace! Most of us have never heard of it. But fortunately, they did mention UA-cam. Whilst talking about someone called CharliesVideoBlog and a really old video of his that has gone viral. We can't relate, although this was meant to make it more relatable. I still remember images of people surfing on keyboards being shown in relation to the internet because you're SURFING using a keyBOARD but it has gotten lame. I try to avoid using "surfing" when talking about browsing the web because it sound so old and lame.
Honestly, the hate towards Google+ it's so annoying. I used Google+ in the past more than I used facebook or any other social media, so screw you for saying I forget it too, there's tons of people still using G+ today.
Honestly, I really miss the way hangouts used to be. How you could send text messages from your browser and from your phone using your phone number and see live updates of a person on the other end seeing and responding to your text messages. Guess we are stuck with facebook messenger...
I don't get into Facebook, I don't get into Twitter, but I do share stories and videos to people on Discord servers... I have a Twitter account, maybe like 1-4 total tweets... I rarely ever hit the Thumbs down/up button on a video unless I really liked or disliked it, I rarely ever comment on a video unless I have something I need to say (never say first even if I am first to comment), I'm guilty of "Necro-ing" forum posts while adding useful information to the thread, and I only leave reviews for stuff if I feel I need to say something really good or really bad about it.
Linus I really love this channel, always covering my most curious topics. All the time I receive a notification of a new video I'm like, *"That's just about what I wanted to watch next!"* . Thank you...

Rick Evans beat me to the punch. My guess is the guys are LTT are too young to remember those days.
Linus forgot to mention Orkut, which was huge in Brazil & India. In 2009, it had nearly 30 million users while Facebook had just 4.2 million. It was acquired by Google; so, in a way, it was their first ever social network.

What's Google Plus?
:)
Google’s social network that has most Google accounts on it (if not all Google accounts)
It's what google forced you to get an account on to comment on youtube.
It's the world's largest social network.
Poor thing. I'm 15 and I use it, so you must be really young.
I was actually introduced to social media via hi5, which was very popular in my school back in 2007/8. Most people didn't have internet connections back then, myself included, and so I gave my password to a friend who did. To you know, use it occasionally. Damn I feel so old.

wow, been a huge fan of LMG for a while now and i just got sent to this old video for a class for an assignment on the history of social media. GJ guys.
Facebook didn't come to India till 2011
We used to use Orkut.
You were starting to wrap up and I was about to comment that you forgot the Google one I can't even remember the name of now. Then you chucked it in. Nice
R.I.P Tunnel bear
What happened?
TunnelBear sucked anyways.
basically TunnelBear got a Lawsuit of 200 million $ on there hands for using images of copyrighted material on their website, so they cut ties with many advertisers like Linus Media Group until they get this sorted out
Tunnebear was acquired by McAfee.
how about orkut?
Was it famous internationally? In the country I live it was, but now that they didn't mention it, I wonder if it was famous in America
Léo Bitencourt yes, it was. I don't live in America but my relatives do.
Orkut wasn't too big in North America.
Orkut's user-base was bigger in Brazil and India.
Fabio Michelete wtf is an orkut
My god, I remember the "web design" of the late 90s, early- and mid-2000s. The embedded midi tunes that play automatically with no way to shut it up other than to unplug your speakers in fury. "Fora"? That's a first! Learned something new today. o.O
How could you forget "Orkut"
bcz orkut was not famous in NA ,.,,, who cares about other countries...
hiren ratra 51%people of US used orkut in 2004 according to wikipedia....i dont know where were you at that time
Tushar, that was in 2004, the year when Orkut was created.
It was designed to be used in the US, it was created in the US, of course most of it's user-base was in the US .
But that changed quickly in the following years
Techquicke mini series on networking, please!
well, Linus is pretty young...
OK boomer...
Great research and overall video!
Lol what about Bebo
You forgot Google Wave. It was way ahead of it's time.
Orkut was huge back in the day when I was in school actually. Facebook came much later among the people here.
Also, Facebook was created to rate girls on their hotness quotient which is a complete asshole move.
TheFourthWinchester That was facemash that ur talking about not Facebook
s/o to the SocialNetwork movie lol
Orkut was the most used by far here in Brazil. After about 2010 Facebook took its place.
I grew up in the UK. Nobody really used myspace here; it was all about bebo & msn at the time. I was born in 92.
RIP TUNNEL BEAR
You joked about Google Plus, but you didn't even joke about Orkut.
i miss myspace...i had a kick ass page..i was an HTML master
Msn live was what I whittled all of my high school years away on with IM
Social media’s History is available on Facebook to Download 😂😂😂
Shut the fuck up
Wow! This is amazing! ❤
Umm... Xanga?
Great video Techquickie and so that is the history of social media :]
what about orkut!?!?
In Finland we had the site called IRC-Galleria, and in here it was most popular social media till facebook came. it was open for public in 2000 and I think it's still running but not sure.
When you just expect Tunnel Bear.........
I’m surprised that there was no mention of the recent Facebook scandal involving Cambridge Analytica. After all, the outcome of this scandal could definitely change the landscape of social media. (And that’s not to mention how people involved in the founding of many social media sites have come out against using social media.)
That google plus joke was hilarious
hahahab i know righd xsd
Such an interesting video, thank you for sharing!
What about Orkut by google
im in class and working and i love yo vids
Does anyone remember myyearbook? I think I used that before I went to myspace.
I've been on the net since 1996, and have seen all the ones you mentioned
What about orkut by Google?
Prasun Das didn't it close??
Rishi Kataria might be but so did that friendster... Also they in a passing mentioned g+ which was Google's second attempt at social network...
So where's the 2 mil special techquickie
Wasn't facebook originally a site to check out girls on campus?
That was facesmash, from same founders though!
Patrick B seems like someone has seen the social network. Also, that was called something different. Not Facebook. It had a face in it but I don't remember the rest
Patrick B campus-wide student directory is a fancy word for it.
The original application was basically a hot or not application for Harvard girls. It was not truly delving into what we would consider Social Media until it became "The Facebook".
That polysics nod during the MySpace segment makes me happy
Should've titled this "Cancer - As Fast As Possible"

LinkedIn doesn't actually exist in any sort of reality.
Hi. I just subbed because your name looked cool. Now I found a new content maker to watch.
The Hoax Hotel LinkedIn??
LunarStorm/StajlPlejs was first and it was super big in late 90s in Scaninavia since they were first with the digital wave
I think Mark disliked this video.
I love techquikie
orkut?
This needs to be updated. Seriously. This is like using a history book written in 10 B.C.
My experience with each...
Friendster = great idea, site was damn slow though
MySpace = user pages were annoying to visit with a hundred customizations each
Facebook = nothing was that "innovative" about it but they made social networking clean and not annoying and have since added innovative features

Google+ = tried it for a week but Google has given us no reason to use it instead of FB
What about Reddit
And there was orkut as well. And it was pretty popular for a while.
history of cancer
upvote deserved
3:49 *Hey look, it's lizard boi!*
Orkut? Anyone? 😏
I like longer Techquickie videos. Better than rushed short videos.
I remembered Friendster & Myspace but completely forgot about G+
.
I remember when AOL have those weird chat rooms. That's where I started my first social media
I don't do social media. Nothing beats person-to-person contact!
If Facebook would at least let users change their background colors & font style of your entire page I might be tempted to make an account again.
We need a social media system that is every bit as usable as facebook but without censorship or data-mining potential. I see crypto/blockchain being involved.
foxpup How will it make money?
Jaixor blockchain is essentially just a way of securing decentralizing data. This way not just one person, or group of people; can control it.
Steemit
Steemit sucks and I was basically like the only communist there anyway.
Then you can use Diaspora.
Put that on your Myspace!!
yeeet
ur first
Great Video
Great video 😃
I was not expecting that diss
That's cold, Linus 8:32
is six degress related to the six degrees of separation?
I'm actually about to do a school project on Six Degrees!
did Xanga not make it to Canada?
What about Bebo? We used that between MySpace and Facebook
Dang... I'm older than Linus. I got into PC before Linus and more likely I have build my first PC before Linus. And yet he knows more about PC than I would ever know lol
tech quickie made me have a quickie
You forgot Tagged and Bebo
How can you forget Orkut? It was one of the most used social network during the 2000's
bump...never heard of orkut until now.....barely heard of friendster in name. really only heard of and used myspace for games and facebook until it went down the drain so quickly and turned into a trash heap of ads and unecessary shit.
was Hyves not popular in the USA and Canada?
I'm surprised you didn't mention Friends Reunited!
Thanks! Very interesting :)

That wasn't very quick.
JK. Great video. Super interesting stuff as always!
Honestly, I really miss the way hangouts used to be. How you could send text messages from your browser and from your phone using your phone number and see live updates of a person on the other end seeing and responding to your text messages.
Guess we are stuck with facebook messenger...
You didnt even mention ORKUT !!!
What about Orkut?
It was the biggest thing here before FB
I don't get into Facebook, I don't get into Twitter, but I do share stories and videos to people on Discord servers...
I have a Twitter account, maybe like 1-4 total tweets...
