Growing up on a farm meant we only had homemade meals every night, nothing wrong with that! However, Christmas Eve was a very rare treat of a Chinese takeaway, because Mum was the cook in our house too, & she’d always say she wanted a night off before the ‘main event’ & all the cooking over the festive period! It was such a big treat for us as well it gave us something to look forward to :) Then we had our roast dinner Christmas Day evening (Dad was a farmer & worked every other year on Christmas Day, he hated going to work with a full tummy at lunch so we had all become accustomed to having it as our evening meal), so we’d just have breakfast as normal & something very light for lunch. Boxing Day we had our fry up in the morning, with jacket potatoes, cold meats (Turkey leftovers with a cooked ham / gammon mum would do), salads etc. New Years Day we’d have another Roast! And throughout we’d just have picky bits.
First Christmas alone as my mum & a sibling passed suddenly & unexpectedly in 2022 (my mum passed on her birthday, sadly). And my dear Dad passed suddenly & unexpectedly in June of this year. Been a difficult one, but wanted to spend it alone this year, so a quiet one for me.
Could you keep one or two of your old knives for the kids to use, & you keep some of your new knives out for yourself hun? Hope Liam is ok!
Happy new year to you all xx

I make my deviled eggs and pies the day before Christmas. Then on Christmas I made a brown sugar crusted ham, glazed carrots, a green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and yeast rolls.

Wow ,you really have been busy ,even more than usual.Hope you managed to enjoy Christmas ,inspite of Liam ending up at A& E and i hope his finger`s ok. We opted for curry on Xmas day and a roast on Boxing day ,just because it`s how we felt this year ,without mum . The Birds Trifle ,omg ,that`s my childhood right there:) I remember mum letting me make it over xmas ,it was my grandad`s favourite.Happy New year Helen ,to all of you.Xoxox

We had our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, my husband is Spanish and it’s tradition out there that they eat their main mean Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day we ordered a seafood platter and smoked salmon terrine from Tesco. Then I did extra spuds and veg on Christmas Eve which I part cooked so just finished them off Christmas Day plus some part baked baguettes and we also had meats and cheeses. It took me 25 minutes to get it all out. That meant we could enjoy the day with the kids

Xmas eve I wrap and cook the pigs in blankets, make and cook the sausage meat stuffing, make carrot and swede mash, prep sprouts and broccoli and make cauliflower cheese up to point of putting in oven. Chop potatoes and leave in water overnight. Then Xmas day I just need to cook turkey, make gravy, do roasties when turkey comes out and warm up the rest. While I'm doing that my girls are in the kitchen with me making cookies and sausage rolls so it's a lovely family kitchen day. For dinner we just have a buffet, stick a pizza in, have sausage rolls, crisps and dip etc xxx

On Xmas eve we always have a takeaway. I peel and chop carrots, broccoli (we don’t like sprouts) and cabbage and put them in ziplock bags in the fridge ready for Xmas day. I cook the turkey xmas eve too along with making whatever vegetarian/vegan main we are having if it’s not something store bought. Yorkshires are always frozen ones as I have never been able to get them to rise properly 😂so Xmas day I air fry pigs on blankets, peel chop and roast parsnips and potatoes along with the prepped carrots from the day before and then tip the bags of prepped broccoli and cabbage into my electric steamer. Cook the vegan main and air fry the yorkshires. 20 mins before the end of cooking I pop the turkey in the bottom of the oven to heat through. Instant gravy so I don’t have to make 2 kinds (meat/vegan) and I’m done. Started cooking at 10.30am Xmas day and we were sat at the table eating our Xmas lunch at 12.30 enjoying a Buck’s Fizz and a gateaux with a Mudslide cocktail for dessert.
Dinner is cold leftovers, salad, bread and cheeses with crisps, chocolates and more gateaux and cocktails

I did that to my finger with a new knife and I'm 36 😂 I had kids at home so to save going to hospital with them all they sent out an advanced paramedic who used this mesh stuff that encourages your skin to grow over it I don't think they wanted me plus three kids down a&e😂 x

Oh, I sympathize with the mom anxiety! But remember - it's a boy's job in growing up to find the edges of things, and occasionally hurt themselves in the process. Almost all boys, and lots of girls, break bits during learning life lessons. As long as the lesson is learned and the damage is minimal ...
So hopefully Liam is ready to respect blades now?
In the long run, with people doing responsible use, sharp blades are involved in less accidental damage than dull ones. I think because force can be so much less, and angles are more predictable, maybe?
Sorry for your stress, but it looks like you did everybody very proud for food this week!

Make less food. It’s okay. Even the Eve meal seemed excessive with so many choices.
