As I'm listening to this interview I think the fact that HS basketball didn't get nearly as much media coverage back then played a big part in why Larry Hughes made it. As he started playing in tougher games in HS and AAU allowed him to challenge himself and gauge his skill on different levels. I think the fact that kids can literally post a highlight of themselves on social media and get 100,000 likes for one highlight can give them a false confidence. Larry stayed humble throughout the process and it helped him tremendously.

My brother ( Kelvin Henderson ) played center for the STL Billikens in 1980-81 season. Larry Hughes was one of my favorites from the Sixers than when he was killing it on Wizards! He should of been an all-star 2004 season… averaged 22- 6 rbs, 5 asts, and league leader with 3 steals a game. Got robbed from all star that year

I met Coach Spoon when I was probably 8 or 9. He was in the basketball court at Jefferson Barracks hospital. Took time to help me with free throws. I never played past highschool but I still have a good jumper.
He was always a solid brotha, as a man who grew up in the Philadelphia area, I recall when he came to Philly and was paired with Ai . And he was young and smooth with his game. No issues no negative vibes like he was really is a man other players always speak highly of especially these 2
