The origin of cocaine:
It all starts with the indigenous people of South America, which chewed on the leaves of the coca plant for thousand of years. Through the Spanish conquistadors this plant spread all over Europe and through Europe, all over the world. If we fast forwards to the 19th century, scientists were able to extract cocaine out the plant. This substance was thought of as a medicine, which supposedly could almost cure all problems and diseases. Not really. And ultimately, we arrived in the late 20th century, where cocaine starts to be used as a recreational drug; often called “blow,” “coke,” and “crack”.
Statistics:
Approximately 14% of all adults in the United States has tried cocaine. And about 8% of all men ages 18-25 have used it the past 12 months.
How does it work?
Cocaine stimulates the reward pathway in our brain. The deep areas of the brain that also light up when you are eating a delicious meal or enjoying a video game. It works by blocking the reabsorption of dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline. This creates to a higher concentration of those neurotransmitters in the reward pathways of your brain.
The "positive" effects:
Among others: increased alertness, euphoria, increased energy, increased feelings of competence and increased sexual arousal or libido.
The "negative" effects:
Among others: depression after a binge-crash cycle, anxiety, mood swings, delusions, hallucination, paranoia, restlessness, increase in risky behaviors, violent behavior, a fast heart rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, damage to your nasal passage, loss of smell, difficulties swallowing, chronic runny nose, hoarseness and constriction of blood vessels supplying blood to your heart or brain.
Longterm effects:
Among others: heart attacks, Cardiac arrhythmias, Strokes,Seizures, Permanent damage to the lungs, Perforation of the nasal cavities, Ulcers, Perforation of the stomach and intestines, Rhabdomyolysis, Decreased libido, abscesses and ultimately there is a high chance of death.
Withdrawal symptoms:
Among others: Exhaustion and fatigue, anhedonia, decreased concentration, depression, anxiety, craving for coke, pain, tremors, shakiness and chills.
All together, these symptoms are highly unpleasant, but cocaine withdrawal symptoms are RARELY medical emergencies. So you can do it. You can quit.
Overdose:
An overdose of coke may lead to; seizure, loss of awareness, loss of urine control, high body temperature, severe sweating, high blood pressure, a very fast heart rate, bluish color of the skin, fast breathing and ultimately death.

I never did it, never will. But I have 4 good friends who used it quite heavily, and I can tell you they are all diminished mentally in some way even though none of them use it anymore. It's honestly sad.

Bruh try getting hooked on opioids or benzos/alcohol. It makes cocaine withdrawal pale in comparison. When I decided to quit coke it was because I was selling it and I noticed I was doing the shit every night with my girl. All the withdrawals were was my brain going ‘I want coooooke’ and I was sleepy. Compared to literally feeling like you’re about to keel over and die from puking and shitting your guts out, I would take a coke addiction any day. Ez.

I did cocaine pretty frequently between the ages of 19-21, and then on rare/occasional benders up until the age of 25. Let me make this abundantly clear to any younger people who may be the same age I was when I started: stop. My usage permanently damaged the neurotransmitters in my brain. I have major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety, and I have to take medication to keep a balanced mental state for pretty much the rest of my life. I've been 100% sober from everything for over a year now and I wonder why tf I ever even did the shit.

Let me just say this, just like weed and every other substance, it comes down to what you can control, I’ve seen friends lose it and never come back, but some have been one in done. Its all about how you treat yourself for longevity, some people have addictive personalities and others do not plain and simple. But this stuff is the hardest to control for those without self control.

He's a typical user, good job, nice house. But every weekend he takes his drug of choice. The funny thing is he hates it. I say to him why would you want to take a drug you don't even like. He doesn't know why.
Perhaps it's just part of his routine.
I can take it or leave it. It's not the best drug in the medicine cabinet, and anything more than a couple of lines turns me weird. But even I can't stop once I start, if I have half a gram I will use it in one session. If I have an 8 ball it would be the same. If I had a kilo, I would be dead.

That’s insane, never heard of that process when mixed. But 100% true. Cocaine/ alcohol are very commonly consumed together, crazy hearing it actually makes its own metabolite.

I have a friend that started doing it and it has changed the way they talk to me or act around me , everything I say is always an issue. Like they aren’t even the same person anymore and idk what to do because I care but when I choose to speak up I just get shut down again and again. I need advice. I don’t want to walk out of their life but it’s hard to sit here and watch them do things and act like a completely different person because of drugs.

The stuff had me running down the main street of the village where i live, basically naked, convinced that i was being chased by gunmen, ended up sectioned for 5 days. Still ended up using again I hate the stuff people dont realise how quickly you can lose everything to it.

My uncle was a great man but i never understood how he could go from superman to such a broken sad man. Towards the end of his life he finally confessed his vices. I still try to wrap my head around him taking his life but this sounds so dreadful 😢

I live in a duplex and I’m pretty sure that my 75 year old neighbor is a coke head. He exhibits very strange behaviors. I recently found him on the front porch trimming his plants as thought he was Edward scissors hands, his voice was shaking and he had the back of the throat drip. He refused to make eye contact with me and went inside leaving a huge mess behind. He stays awake all night and sleeps by day. He’s very spiteful and looks for trouble. A door slammer and listens to his stereo as loud as it could go. Could someone actually be 75 and be a coke head? How is he still alive? Also, sometimes I smell a burning rubber odor coming through the walls. Any ideas of what that might be?

A. It’s not your socioeconomic status that determines if you’re a “junkie,” it’s your drug use. You could be the president of the United States but if you’ve got a drug problem you’re still an addict.
B. Cocaine is not regulated by the FDA like Adderall is so there’s no quality control. All it takes is getting one bad batch with a little fentanyl in it and it’s game over.
