To call the vicinity of Amsterdam as "rural" and "not so many people" is....ehm.... "courageous".
Yes, in the Netherlands are big rural areas, but they are in spite of that some of the countries with the highest population density worldwide.
edit: "freedom" to endanger your own life and lifes of others by driving a not roadworthy machine is madness. Many of us have the opinion, that our freedom ends, where the freedom of others begins.

    Just some information:
About 1 in 2 people in the Netherlands privately owns a car. On top of that there are about 1,5 million cars from the company. So about 60% of the population has access to a car. If you also take into account the people who are too young to drive, the amount of potential drivers comes close enough to the numbers in the US percentage wise. The population density in the Netherlands is much higher than in the US, and there are very few US cities which have a higher population density than the entire country of the Netherlands.

15.13 Where he's driving is actually one of the most densely populated areas in the Western world. There is a wall on the right side, to there is probably a city or village at the other side, shielded against the noise. It's called the randstad because all the cities and villages started spreading out into eachother. Many did but where they didn't, there is a strict border between urban and rural, so it looks very rural and it is, but only partly and for short stretches.
Of course good roads are cheaper over short stratches, but there is a lot of soggy soil and an awful lot of bridges and tunnels too. Disciplined driving makes the roads less crowded for the same number of cars, most people have a car by the age of thirty, it's just that government makes long term investments and maintains infrastructure well to get as much people moving around as possible. By train and preferably, but it accepts that people drive a lot too. Connectivity is good for the economy and good for a lot more, so it's allowed to be expensive, it generates more tax revenu in total than it costs.
Getting your drivers licence is another step up in independence and mobility, but not the first one, there was the bicycle to start with, then the train. For my generation it was not unusual for 13 year old girls to cross the country by train by themselves during school holidays, there used to be a special cheap ticket for that which translated as teenager tour. And for the longer distances there were the mopeds. So the roads are busy but if everybody would always take the car from the age of 18 the country would be one big traffic jam and come to a standstill.

First thing I learned in a german driving school: "Always assume everybody around you is an idiot."
Thats leading to a certain mindset. You learn to be prepared for any stupid stuff. 99% of the time all will be good, but better prepared then sorry. And if sth DOES happen you dont get mad at that person but slow down and observe an idiot.
Second thing I learned: "Half of your speed is a safe distance." This only works for km/h and meters though. Going 30 km/h a distance of 15 meters is considered safe. For 150 km/h its 75m. And so on. Very easy to follow to get a rough estimate on how far away a car should be for everybody to be safe.
Is there any similar rule for U.S. drivers with miles and feet?

I learned to drive in the UK over fifty years ago and when I passed my test, my instructor said "One final tip. Everyone else on the road is an idiot - and they think the same about you." Ever since then, whenever I see someone do something stupid, I remember that tip and hold back, move over, go a bit faster, stop - do whatever is necessary to make sure that I am not the idiot and we all get home safely.

I'm European, if I'm going shopping I ride my push bike, if I'm going to work I ride my electric bicycle, if I'm going into the city I take my push bike on the train, if I'm just going out for the day I'll ride my push bike and use the train. If I'm going camping I'll take my 4x4 , if I'm going fishing I'll take my boat, if I fancy some speed I'll take a motorbike out ,or one of my classics if there's a meet up. Most of us in Europe DO own cars ,motorcycles, trucks, sports cars , we just don't prioritise them every day if there's a better alternative to sitting in traffic and paying parking ,toll, congestion charges and fuel .nothing makes me smile more than riding to the beach on a sunny morning passing everyone sat in traffic jams with 5 miles to go and no parking when they get there and I've got a bike lane all to myself with the wind in my hair and my radio playing , a fat dooby on the go and an ice box full of cider on the back with my fishing gear. German here. Yes, the ones with the Autobahn ;-). Regarding lessons ... I´d go even further. I´d say if some one has a license for a year ... knows how to read the signs, to adjust the speed, so savely going from A to B. After this year I´d like lessons to teach the "unexpectable" situation. Hard braking on different road conditions (rain, snow, sand..). Losing and regaining control of the car. How to correctly react when another merges in your lane without looking. How to handle a deer or an obstacle in the night ... with and without traffic in the opposite direction. Learn the limits of your car / driving skills.
It´s simple to drive 250km/h on the Autobahn ... all you need to do is to push the pedal. But it´s really difficult to drive 60km/h on snow. Still both is dangerous. While losing the car at 250km/h is rather lethal ... driving on snow is way less dangeous. And both follows the same rules of physics. If you are able to control a car on snow (by gentle steering and pedal movements) you have a much better chance to handle an high spped issue. Also to change from panic_movements to controlled_movements.
And I fully agree: I had way mor dangerous situations when driving distracted but slowly ... than driving focussed at high speed.

In Australia driving is considered a privilege also. You have to really earn that sh*t. You have to be 17 yrs. old (mostly) you have to have at least 100 hours experience just on your learners permit before you can even sit your license exam. Then you are on a probationary license for 2 (count 'em, 2) years where you are restricted on your alcohol level (zero) and the number of passengers you can take. Even then the "wallopers" (the cops) can apply to have your license suspended or cancelled at will or even have your vehicle impounded for traffic infringements. You have to earn it to get it and then keep on earning it to keep it.

I think the guy was very lucky with the traffic on the day he filmed this. Amsterdam (and Netherlands in general) is very densly populated. Far more dense than most cities and places in the US. Most European cities have bumper-to-bumper traffic during rush hour.
And most got a drivers license and access to a car.
I have driven in LA many times - and some in the Atlanta area, and quite often in the SF and Seattle area. I think it comes down to:
Drivers education. As pointed out. It is not just the test that is more involved - it is the entire education (3 months+). All aspects of driving is covered, from city driving to highway driving, what to do when there is an accident (including CPR/first aid), knowing the vehicles itself, etc. The driving test itself is cheap.
Quality of the roads. Notice anything missing from the sides of the road in the video? Not a billboard in sight. Many countries do not allow commercials along roadsides as they are deemed distracting. The standard and quality of the road surfaces, intersections, signage, etc seems to be of better quality (and no this money does NOT come out of the expense for drivers ed). In the US it seems a bit more..chaotic.
Law enforcement. It is rare to see a cop car patrolling the roads in Europe (compared to the US). However if you DO get caught driving bad - the fines are much steeper, and a much shorter "road" to getting a suspended license. Some countries have fines based on your salary, where we have examples of people paying tens-of-thousands of dollars for driving too fast. This means people respect the rules more.
Quality of the cars. As mentioned in the video - you DO see a lot of strange stuff on US roads. I've been riding some taxies in LA that IMO was not road worthy. Gaffa taped tail light and bumper...spare tire on one wheel, broken suspension...all in ONE taxi.
PS! A a Norwegian driver this was part of my curriculum to get the license:
    * Mandatory theory lessons (don't remember, 20+ hours)
    * Knowing the car (seatbelts, mirrors, correct seat adjustments, oil, air, filters, etc.)
    * First aid and CPR - what to do if you encounter an accident or you are in an accident.
    * City driving including different types of parking in cites - and going through a million roundabouts. Also includes hill starts (remember, we train normally on stick shift cars).
    * Highway driving - overtaking, dangers of long drives, speed blindness, etc.
    * Practical night driving. Correct use of light. Dangers when driving in the dark.
    * Winter condition driving. Get to try the car out on very slippery conditions. Practice emergency braking and collision avoidance when slippery.
After all that you get to take the theory test and if you pass (over 50% fail this one) - you get to do the practical test, where you drive with a person from the "DMV" rides with you for about 45 mins and takes notes on how you are doing. Usually the DMV person will ask you to drive both through a city centre and on the highway.

It's funny where in the US you can drive and poorly at that at 16, have sex and change your name, but you can't drink until 21. In Europe driving is governed by common rules and you must obey them, insurance is very high for young drivers and powerful cars and stupid behavior on the road is punished severely. So you can pass on bad habits to a 16yr old and give it a 2+ ton vehicle to cause rukkus on the streets, but won't give it a beer! The entire fact that people who are either less capable to drive or actually scared of driving don't have to drive, makes it so much more pleasant for everybody. It's the main point I use to argue against people who are opposed to public transport. "Honey, that train is not for you. It's for Betty and Steve who are on the road while they haven't driven very often because they're old and think it's dangerous, are driving insecure and unpredictably, and making it a worse experience for themselves and for you. But they have no other choice. If you had a damn train you wouldn't have to worry about those kind of people anymore. You're forcing them on the road with you, then complain about it, are you stupid?"

If your not wearing a seat belt or wearing it incorrectly, snap & fine on the way. Any & most traffic stops, you'll be "put on the bag", breathalysed for alcohol. You may even be randomly roadside drug tested. Thou public transport is pretty good in the major cities & some provincial cities. You go to the outback & public transport is just about non-existent. A personal problem I have is around me people stagger start at junctions rather than moving on green a lot of reactive driving and a general selfishness once inside that ‘weapon’ as you call it. No experience of driving in the USA so can’t speak to which is better, I’m happy this guy has had a positive experience I feel it speaks more to his driving than others though in a lot of cases.

LOL. You guys could have written his script. Everytime you mentioned an issue he explained it or said the same. Spencer said something very early that explains the difference a lot. He said a lot of Americans are very self centred and also everything is about THEIR rights. Our road safty goes further because the state is concerned about the right of everyone to feel safe and to hell if it pisses off someone to be photographed in thier car while texting. If you don't do it than it's not an issue. As Spencer said as well they don't repect that their vehicle can kill.

You pay for the book material, the access to the driving schools study program online (if offers), a vision test, risk courses (ice/slip manouvre course where you'll get to experience losing control in a controlled environment and how to improve control), the driver instructors time per lesson and stuff like that. That's why it costs so much. But what you get is surely a much better foundation and sense of understanding than you get from an american driving school. Of course I'm sure there are places who are doing it more thoroughly like they generally do in Europe. I would assume the regular program in the US is like express programs in Europe. But I won't die on that hill, just my guess.

in germany, its mandatory to get a certificate for extended first aid class to get your driver licence, you do the class while being in the timeperiod when going to the driver lessons, which you have to pay yourself, the first aid lessons provided by firepartment or EMT services, contains cpr, mouth to mouth but also how to get an injured person out of a car if necessary, how to grab an injured and or unconcious person out of the road and to drag to the side safely, how to remove helmet from an injured person who rides a motorbike but also when when not remove the helmet! how to put various bandages on people, how to deal with broken limbs, how to deal with burned skin one get get in a burnign car, how to deal with fingers, arms legs that have been cut off in an accident and how to save it for the medical staff and much more. most first aid content is related to car accidents, trauma, how to keep body temparature of unconsciouss people stable, how to deal with vomiting people who are unconciousness, how to deal with people in extreme panic mode, how to deal with people in shock situation, how to support other traffic participants in car accidents, or traffic accidents who see their own friends , family while being in a traffic accident injured and dead and much much more.
this makes you also much more empathic to other traffic participants, like pedestrians, children using the streets, be empathic to other drivers. applying the first aid is mandatory, if you do not, you can get in trouble legally for not helping.
also its mandatory to get a certificate for visiontest, it will show if you need glasses/ lens for driving and will be noted in your driverlicence. you pay yourself for the test. if you get caught without glasses but need one , you pay high fine.
this is also why the cost of driver licence are high, when paying for visiontest, for first aid classes etc.
people have to go to specific specialized private driving learning school, its usually a small business that is allowed to teach theory and practical lesson who have the certificate to do so. the students must use the cars that the school offer, not the car you own, there is a reason. they offer special cars, where the driver teacher has its own set of pedals, like gas and brake for the right seat, has multiple set of own extra additional mirrors and react accordingly to traffic. the teacher can use the brake on his or her side independent from the student on the left seat, can speed up independent from student on left seat.
the practical lesson contain: driving in city within the high traffic hours , like in the commuting hours, how to deal with that, driving in special zones like where many cycling lanes are, driving on highway/autobahn, driving lesson in the dark hours, like in wintertime it can be at 5 a clock in the aftertoon, but in summertime, it can be at ten o clok in the evening, one has to have driving very long distance and get the feel of boredoom, tiredness, routine and forgetting to pay attention, one learns his or her own limits and reaction to certain situations. (my lesson was 5 hours long in one way, i drove around 5 hours in one direction, and another student who was in the backseat, she drove the 5 hours back after we had a break, we drove to the border of another country by that time and back, while the teacher was all the time on the right seat and observing, it was a fun ride)
also, every car owner has to have unspoiled first aid kitt at all time, its mandatory. if you get caught, not having one, a spoiled one, incomplete one, you pay high fine. also use it in an road accident, its not decoration.
its mandatory to take care of the accident site yourself with the mandatory equipment the car owner has to carry at all time , like a warning west in neon color, a warning triangle sign with reflector to put in a specific distance from the accident site to show that there is a car wreck coming soon etc. if you get caught not owning these in your car, you get to pay a high fine. also not using these properly in an accident may cost you additional to the fine , some negativ points for your driver licence status.
the speed limit in europe is asked not because people cause accident in high speed, but the gas usage is much higher when people drive faster, when they do not really be that fast. its for environmental reason to keep CO2 level down . driving fast also makes road age faster.
the gas price in europe is double the price as in USA bc it pays the road repairments.
the road cameras in germany will take pictures from front and behind to see if you are wearing seatbelt, texting with smartphone , eating , drinking and not paying attention while driving. it will cost you your driving licence.
in cities, people can use public transit safely, its clean, affordable, frequent and reliable. so a 16 year old, a 10 year old do not depend on parents, on a car to go to school, for free time activities, visting friends. same goes for elderly who can not drive well anymore, they do not depent on cars and cause accident by their aging.
also, if you do not own a car, one can rent, call taxi, use carpooling service.
the freedome of an individual ends when the freedome, safety of the other beginns. you can not use your freedome till another person rights, safety is put in danger.
europe isnt perfect, but there is some effort done to learn from mistakes people do and change the system instead blaming the people.

Lol@ "where he is driving probably isn't as densely populated as Orlando." Sure, it's only one of the most densely populated countries. Amsterdam population density: 4,908 people per km². Orlando density: 1,071.30/km². And also too: people in the Netherlands know how to behave in traffic, because we actively participate in that traffic as of age 6 or so. We're not in our parents backseats being driven everywhere as kids. We bike or walk to school, to sports, to friends. There's even a mandatory cycling exam the year before we go to high school. Because usually in high school, our worlds broaden and we cycle further. So by the time we are up for our driving licence, we already know quite a bit. And by the way: 20 years ago I paid 2500 euros for lessons, theory exam and the actual exam. I passed everything the first time. I'm sure it has gotten more expensive now. Edited to add: car owners pay quite a lot in road and petrol taxes in the Netherlands. That's why the roads are so nice. In the US, those taxes haven't changed since the early 90's. So yeah, you can't afford to keep your roads neat and tidy. On top of that, you guys drive super heavy vehicles which damage the roads even quicker. Over here, the heavier the vehicle, the more taxes you pay. Except for EV's which hardly pay anything, that should really change soon. Edit 2: we are absolutely allowed to eat and drink behind the wheel, this guy is lying.

Question: Here in Germany you can also lose your driver's license again. Usually for a limited period of time, i.e. 1 to xy months (which can cost you your job if you're unlucky), but if you're determined to be unfit to drive, it can also be permanent. In extreme cases, a court can even impose a lifelong driving ban, which means you can never get a new driver's license. Is there anything like this in the US?

He kind of downplayed the part about the role of driving in more rural areas. Yes, it's probably still leagues better than in the US, but especially here in Germany, the rural areas are extremely car-dependent. There is basically no public transportation there, and even if there is, the frequency will be very low, and services tend to stop operating very early, so no chance of a car-free night out with friends when the last bus comes at 6 or 7 pm. And even that's a luxury, there's many villages where there's two or three busses a day, and even those only on school days to get kids to and from school, so on weekends and public holidays there's often no public transport whatsoever.
Many parts of rural Germany are actually pretty similar to the US when it comes to car-dependency. The only difference is that towns and villages are closer together and don't use American zoning laws, so you have a chance of being close to something, but even then it's often too far to walk or too dangerous to bike there.

Wrong conclusions all over the place. Europe has 2.4 times (252 mio) as many cars per km² as the US (100 mio). The length of all roads is about 5.9 mio km in Europe compared to 6.6 mio km in the US. Put that together and you get 2.8 times the amount of cars on every european km of road, so almost 3 times as many as in the US. Even if two third of the population go by foot or bike it's still the same amount of cars like in the US.
It's true, we don't have a New York (8.4 mio inhabitants) or a L.A. (3.8 mio), but we do have Istanbul (15.9 mio), Moscow (13 mio), London (8.8 mio), Berlin (3.7 mio) or Madrid (3.3), so you can't take the size of american cities as an explanation for "more" traffic and therefore rules not being followed, especially with almost 3 times more cars in Europe.
Let's adress this from a pure logical pov: If a driver knows and follows the rules, why would he stop doing so just because of more traffic? He won't. The video shows a quiet piece of the Autobahn, but more or less traffic doesn't change a thing. In the end it's all about education, not about traffic.

This is where the USA confuses me , over there as you point out driving is a necessary fact of life ,but at 16 they say here go out with your parents or grandparents now go drive and that seems.normall , over here UK they say we don't want people to get killed so if you want too drive we have professional instructors learn with them.then take a test too prove you are safe , I took ten lessons at £8 per lesson then £20 for test my daughter pays £25 per lesson for 15 lessons or £800 for one solid week of intense training and then takes a test all for £800 so not sure where the £2500 is . But the USA does.seem.a.bit cavalier with the lives of their citizens and give them the freedom too injure themselves and others or worse also we have something called the ministry of transport test sit down for this one , you cannot drive a car that fails a test too prove it is safe too be driven ,so any rusted out junkers you see on the road here are actually safe too.drive so your rural country pickups if they even put out too much smoke you can't drive it . Also I meet a lot of Americans in my work and after seeing them drive I would Grange the £5000 but that was mostly arrogance saying but I am American we have big roads so we know how too drive he drove out of our grounds and straight into a tree

Rule is: get the most right lane as possible. Some are just camping im the middlelane. Saying: We have bad drivers also!
BUT: The most drivers ARE rightmost.

My first car was a BMW 318I, from 1986. After that, I had some more special cars. An Opel Corsa 1.2 sunroof. A Nissan Micra 1.3 SRI. Both, between 750 kg and 830 kg (1450 pounds and 1660 pounds). With another chip on the Nissan Micra 1.3 SRI. From 87 hp to 127 hp. 850kg! SRI was already in 3 red letters! And a little extra. Then it's nice, they come and stand next to you. On the left, because they think they are faster! Too bad, but there was no one who won against me at the time. Greetings from Bunschoten-Spakenburg, the Netherlands.

3:48 but also how driving tests and requirements to actually get a drivers license.. In europa it is expensive and it is like schooling ioone how to drive, first in theory where a pretty hefty exam must be done, and then a practical drive off with an authorised certified drive instuctor who plans a route you have to perfectly complete. And it is quite expensive, add to that the first 5 years you are on "trail" I believe 3 or 5 faults ( major ones like running red"makes it you have to redo it and pay for it again. Fines are also expensive, and cardrivers are in the wrong when hitting a pedestrian or bicyclist, YOU as driver have to prove THEY where in the wrong.. so yeah.. car drivers are more behaved and carfull when pedestrins and bicycles are around. In the cities.. THEY are priority traffic, cars are guests in the cities. I am from The NEtherlands, hope it might clear some questions up that might have risen :)

8:36 You can loose license, when speeding over 35 km/h too fast or with too much alcohl in blood, or when creating accident, and the obvious that USA has too.. and YES you have to take a diciplinairy schooling, you pay, and then redo your driving license all over..you pay..

The standard of driving here in the UK has got worse over the last 20 years. I don't drive. But I do get lots of lifts from friends and family and can see the idiots around. A lot of it has to do with the fact that many younger people want to drive and have that independence but don't always learn to respect the road or the the fact that the machine thet are operating can kill. Ten years ago my husband and I were inches from being hit side on at speed by an idiot doing 60mph+ in a built up area. If my husband had been going just a fraction faster I'd probably be in a wheelchair now. He crashed into a parked car and was relatively unhurt but both cars were a right off. He got out and started screaming at my husband that it was his fault. The owner of the parked car was going to kill him if his wife hadn't held him back. It went to court and we were called as whitness' but the evidence spoke for its self. He lost his licence for 1 year was ordered to take a road awareness course and was fined £1000. If he did get back on the road his insurance will be easily 4 x what it used to be becuase of the conviction. That is what a lot of the younger generation don't get is that not following the rules can create huge issues later down the line.

somehow every topic where the us is compared to europe seems to come down to the fact that americans dont think your freedom ends when you endanger other people and europeans do....not sure why

"It's nice to see what could be. But it is what it is." That's what most exploited workers in Germany at the end of the 19th century said. But some said, "I'm going to change our country. I may not live to see the change, but I'm working on it."
It seems that most Americans today are content to whine on UA-cam rather than give meaning to their lives. (This is not personal, just my general observation.)
