Moments like this both move my heart and also make me proud to be an American.
Whatever side you are on this is moving and sad. It is horrible watching a parent die. I also saw the photo of his guide dog laying beside the coffin at the wake, unable to say goodbye. Godspeed to him and his family.

The Republican party has become the party of McCarthy. How do you ensure you're always right in a debate? Manufacture conspiracy theories to dismiss facts, demonize your political opponents and sell your agenda. You can't ever lose as you just form your own reality that contradicts objective reality.
There's a term in Psychology for that. It's called assimilation. When people, when confronted with facts that contradict their world view, alter the facts to fit their world view.
Then there are those who use accommodation to learn. When confronted with facts that contradict their world view, alter their beliefs to accommodate the facts.
People use assimilation all the time in arguments when they can't stand the thought that their feelings might not be justified and that they rushed to judgement. This is the Republican party now, especially as they continue to walk back conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory and start to champion liberal causes as if they had been champions for them all along (preexisting conditions, criminal justice reform).
The Republican party is not a party of ideas. It's the party of Joseph McCarthy. When out of ideas on how to solve problems, in order to remain relevant and remain in power, manufacture conspiracies to make your opponents look evil. It has gotten so bad, there's a crazy right wing conspiracy theory for literally every issue.
What's funny about it, is if there is a vast conspiracy to make up studies, where are the conservative equivalent studies that contradict these "liberal" "fake" studies? Fact is, there are none or they came to the same conclusions (immigrants are less likely to commit crimes, climate change is real. See: The Heritage Foundation accepting these realities after doing their own studies.)
Or if they do have studies, they don't discuss the details. Like claiming most illegal immigrants are criminals, but when looking at the data, most of the crimes were crimes related to immigration (which they don't include the forging of documents in and instead label the crimes generally as "fraud", further reducing the number that are committing theft, rape, murder.). And you gotta wonder, if there are so many illegal immigrant crimes, why are all the high profile ones that Republicans talk about the most mostly accidents? Trump held up the victims of these crimes and all of them were accidents. Kate in San Francisco was killed by a bullet ricochet from a gun that was accidentally fired. And two others Trump pushed were killed by DUIs. And yet we're to believe that illegal immigrants are violent criminals when the most high profile cases you cite are all accidents?
Also worth mentioning, you'd think out of the literally millions of people involved in these "fake" manufactured studies, there'd at least be several hundred whistleblowers. I mean you'd make a lot of money coming out with a book deal exposing such massive fraud. Especially being recognized as a champion of the right for exposing what they "knew" all along. Even if they're under threat of their life or their family's life, once you reveal this massive plot, it's highly unlikely you or your family would be killed as it'd just confirm the conspiracy. Yet out of the massive amounts of people involved there are strangely no whistleblowers, or maybe one or two who are heavily funded by a corporation (such as oil companies for a few climatologists). Generally, the more people involved in a conspiracy theory and the less whistleblowers there are in proportion, the less likely it is to be true.
The conspiracy of widespread voter fraud is a great example of that. In fact, out of the few cases of voter fraud discovered, the vast majority of them have been committed by Republicans (ironically justifying their fraud believing there's massive voter fraud coming from liberals). See: Presidential election, Bay County Florida and North Carolina.
And out of the supposed cases of voter fraud committed by Democrats, there's not ONE whistleblower or anyone exposing this plot to subvert our democracy.
Point is, maybe you should do some research. Whenever I'm looking up anything, I look up the information that OPPOSES my preconceived beliefs in order to attempt to disprove my beliefs, while also checking the sources to determine whether or not they're qualified to be talking about the specific topic they claim knowledge to (at least when talking science and foreign policy). Which is why I commit to watching Fox News everyday despite the fact that I vehemently disagree with the opinions expressed (it makes me more objective and understanding towards the viewpoint of the other side). Question EVERYTHING and actively try to disprove ALL of your beliefs. That's how science works and look what that way of thinking has brought us with the massive gains in technology. It's assumptions that kept us in the dark ages, it's questions and doubt that brought us into the light. If you haven't researched both positions of a given issue and the evidence and facts they cite, then you're condemning yourself to ignorance and you can't claim to be informed.
