A lot of the great British comedians studied something hard core before getting into comedy. Graham Chapman was studying medicine, Rowan Atkinson studied electrical engineering, Terry Jones was a medieval scholar, Jo Brand was a mental health nurse, Clive Anderson was a practicing barrister. It explains a lot about the perceived differences in English and American humor, I think.

The BBC also produce a radio show ( also available as a podcast) called The Infinite Monkey Cage which is a comedy science panel show presented by Brian Cox and a comedian called Robin Ince. Ben Miller has made multiple appearances on that, as has Dara O'Briain. Well worth a listen to if you enjoy this type of thing.

Mercifully, this was one of the last episodes of the panel sneering at knowledge. In a way, you can almost see it in this episode, as Rob and Sean both start out as the sneering schoolchildren, but Rob eases off on it while Sean just keeps going. By the time Sandi comes around, that streak is pretty much gone. The closest you get to that now is the panel going after Gyles Brandreth for having an anecdote about pretty much everything. Unfortunately, this was the only episode Ben Miller ever did-- who, if you've never seen in DEATH IN PARADISE, you probably saw in the original JOHNNY ENGLISH.

To be fair, even I think Miller leaned too heavily into "lecture" mode, when this is a light entertainment show.
Especially with a field like physics, that can have a lot of jargon, he needed to be more aware of his audience.
(I'm guessing he was delighted at the rare opportunity to talk about science topics he found fascinating, and overlooked that these were actors who primarily studied the arts.)

In one of Feynman's books, he mentioned attending the dinner for the Nobel Prize.
The Swedish princess asked what he did, and when he said "physics", she jested that they wouldn't have anything to talk about, due to how much wasn't known.
Feynman responded that they wouldn't have a casual conversation precisely because a lot is known about physics. Conversation is mostly about topics where the people talking don't know much, like the weather or economics or politics. (The princess was not pleased at his response.)

There's a great tradition of comedians springing from UK Universities dating back to the 50s, most notably - but not exclusively - from Oxbridge where comedy groups The Oxford Revue and the Cambridge Footlights first came to prominence or, at least, began to break out of the campuses and into the public eye. Revue shows (a mixture of song, dance and satirical sketches) go back to the 19th century and, owing to the learned nature of the performers, became very popular with the more educated classes who could "get" the political and literature based targets the shows lampooned. It was in taking their revues beyond the city limits and regularly appearing at venues during the Edinburgh Arts Festival outside the scheduled festival events (what was then known as "The Fringe") that many comedians got their break. The Pythons, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Graeme Garden, Rowan Atkinson, Fry and Laurie, Clive James, Clive Anderson, David Mitchell, Sue Perkins, Emma Thompson and many more were all Oxbridge alumni who created the comedy bubble of intellectual British humour which was both embraced and burst by the "Alternatives"

Chinese can distinguish between R and L no problem, at least the northern dialects since they use both. In the south the R is pronounced differently (closer to Zh). But it's definitely not making fun of anyone, it is how they actually speak and the closest to the way they hear it. That's like saying people are making fun of English speakers for not being able to pronounce French sounds, when they say words like naïve, encore or mutton. No, these are obviously normal English words and the fact they originally came from French does not make them any less part of the language.
It is actually the Japanese who have trouble distinguishing R and L, because Japanese language only uses R, but it's a very lightly tapped R that sounds very close to an L. It is really something in between the L and R that English and many other languages use.

There are two episodes from the I series that immediately spring to mind which are great if you're wanting more of a balance between comedy and intellect - "Illness", where one of the guests is the physician and science writer Ben Goldacre, and, appropriately enough, "Intelligence," which has what I'd call a QI-all-star cast plus a very important guest.

Maybe it’s different in the Chinese languages, but I know with Japanese they have their own phoneme that sounds to us like it’s in-between l and r, and so they’ll use that as a stand-in for either but it’s more that they aren’t used to saying l/r and just say their in-between one. So it’s less their inability to distinguish, but rather a difficulty pronouncing and not having it sound like their existing syllables, which *we* English speakers then fail to distinguish as being it’s own thing in-between since we’re assuming it has to be one or the other (we’ll hear the l when they say r and vice versa, since it’s skewing that direction).
Then of course, when they get loan words they write them down using their own characters also, and it loses the original reference to know which it is. Like, their google is literally written guguru, it’s not a misinterpretation if they have different information.

I was curious about Rob and the time capsule thing so I did some digging and he was kinda right. According to University of Pittsburgh website, there's a cornerstone in the Commons Room from 1937, given as a gift to that years graduating class with instructions not to open it until 2437, 500 years after its creation.
A time capsule from 1891 was opened in Croatia and contained a message, noted achievements of the time, current prices and several newspapers and coins. One was discovered in Scotland containing a newspaper from 1894 and, obviously, a bottle of whiskey.
QI saying 1940 was the first was nonsense. Stephen sometimes has too much faith in the Elves being 100% correct in everything, it annoyed me him brushing Rob off as an idiot making something up without considering he is likely right. Rob was not necessarily correct in 1937 being the first but he was closer than the Elves.
Series F was from the year 08/09, this episode was from 2009, and several time capsules from the 1890s and early 20th century had been discovered and opened before this episode was filmed so I really don't know what they were talking about. Seems like lazy research, I found this all on my own in 10 minutes.
10 minutes of my sad life that I'll never get back.

The reason QI works is because it combines knowledge with humour.
And although I love the knowledge of Ben Miller I also love the humour of Sean Lock and have no issues with Sean taking the piss.
I don't think it's because of the distrust in intelligent people I think it's because of yhe format of the show were there needs to be a healthy dose of both.
I think it's one of the reasons why QI worked better with Stephen compared to the less funny (although still fumny) episodes with Sandy.
