Fun Fact, for the final of this online chess tournament, the finalists flew to a hotel in northern germany, to both sit in their respective hotel rooms, to play an online tournament against each other...
They were likely heavily monitored in those hotel rooms, using specially provided equipment to ensure there was no cheating as well as consistent high quality connection. It's not completely inane.
What amazing play! I think this match does great credit to both players. No doubt Magnus will become less powerful over time and others will become stronger ... a lot like human beings :-) So much the better for the fans and the game, and no fault to the players.
Can we just appreciate the greatest endgame playet of all time? Magnus was so deadlost but he created serious practical chances and outplayed Alireza!!
For me I just like a double round robin with the 1-2 finishers playing an 8 game final over two days (two 4 game sets). If they keep the current format, would be best to make the losers bracket also 4 game matches. Just my two-cents.
Since , magnus didn't lost to anyone ( in the group stage , semi final and winners final ) he got an extra chance by grand final reset and whoever wins in reset wins the tournament
Jesus... they explain it so many times over the broadcast. It's a double elimination bracket. Alireza lost a set earlier during the tournament, so was in losers bracket, and Magnus hadn't lost a game and was thus in winners. Alireza had to win a set to 'reset' the bracket, take them both into the losers bracket and from there it was winner take all. And Magnus took. It's like every player has one spare life over the tournament, and Alireza used his before the Grand Final. You could literally have just googled this though, it's not hard.
What do you mean? The format is double elimination, which effectively means that every player gets two chances. It wouldn't make sense for everyone except the upper bracket player to get two chances. In this case, it's only fair that Magnus gets a second chance as well, which he used and wins.
@@ksham. the player from the loser bracket had two games more and in the finals he's forced to win two rounds, the second round being shorter than the first.
People complaining that "must win twice is stupid" is so dumb and ignorant. Like being in the winners bracket was granted or something, its a hard earned privilege and everyone had equal chance to get it also..
I don't think so, Magnus surpassed 2800 at 18 and never went below it since. Magnus became #1 Rated chess player by 18 and has remained so ever since. Also Magnus achieved these feats by beating the very best GM's and top rated players in the World, While Firouzja barely went over 2800 and then lost his rank shortly after and he didn't do it against the top GM's in the world but in some Iranian tournament
Where is the interview between presenter GM R. Hess and GM Carlsen at the end of the tournament. The chess community at its tipping point. Doing an interview with GM Firouzja only. GM Hess, I don't understand. 🙄🤔
Somebody has to come from the upper bracket, having won all games prior, not having to use the lower bracket or "second chance" to stay in the tournament. Doing so is rewarded by having the leeway of an additional set, given they lose the first. It acts as that "second chance" that everybody else already used by getting knocked down to the lower bracket. Hope that makes sense.
Magnus came from the upper bracket (winner side, means never lose a match before GF in the tournament), while Alireza came from the lower bracket (loser side, means he lost a match before the GF)
Format is winners and losers bracket. Magnus came from winners (not lost until now) while Alireza came from losers. So after the final, Magnus has a «second life» in the grand finals
The format is double elimination, which means that every player gets two chances. Magnus hasn't lost; Alireza has lost so he had to go through the Loser's bracket. It wouldn't make sense for everyone except the Winner's bracket player to get two chances. In this case, it's only fair that Magnus gets a second chance as well, which he used and wins.
Alireza was in the losers bracket, Magnus in the winners, so he had to win twice. Same if Alireza was in winners bracket and Magnus in the losers bracket.
In some double-elimination formats, the best result that a player in the loser bracket can get is 3rd place. In formats like this one, instead they often require the player coming from the bottom side of the bracket to win twice against the undefeated player in order to win the championship. The logic is basically that the first win gives both players the same number of losses so they play another set to break the tie.
it's because it's a double elimination setup, meaning you have to lose 2 sets to get kicked out of the tournament. magnus had not lost a set the entire tourney, but alireza had lost a set before this match. alireza was coming from the losers bracket to the grand finals, whereas magnus was coming from the winners bracket. so for magnus to be eliminated he would need to lose 2 sets.
Can someone please explain this format. Ali won the first set 2.5 to 1.5. Then Magnus won the second set 2-0. Why wasn't the second set also four games?
All I'm seeing is comments like "Alireza was better!", "why the reset?" (the format has always been like this but they're conveniently complaining just now), just acknowledge Magnus and his greatness👑 (Reza is a great player but he still needs to improve, props to him tho cause he brought a great fight)
No, it's not. Firouzja was in the lovers bracket. That means he lost in the main and had a second chance. Magnus had not lost and still had his second chance in the final. Had any other player made it to the winners' final, they would have had the second chance as well.
Keep crying Alireza wasn't instructed to lose earlier and go in the losers bracket if he was so good he should've been in the upper bracket instead of magnus
We saw the most ridiculous formula in the Grand Final stage.. Who really designs these cases?!.. in all competitions in all different disciplines. The winner of the winners section must be able to defeat the winner of the losers section in order to win the final and no extra points should be given to him in advance!
you should see this fact like everyone has 2 lifes. alireza lost 1 life throughout the tournament losing to fedeser. so he wasn t eliminated but just lost 1 life. magnus has never lost so he had 2 lifes intact.
Alireza already got knocked out but was given a chance in the lower brackets. Magnus too got the same lifeline but in the finals instead because he was the upper bracket win. That's how the format works.
Excellent commentary, please keep GM David Howell and GM Robert Hess around. They made very high level chess fun and understandable for weaker players like myself. Those two are an awesome team.
Magnus participates = Magnus wins.
Is this even a question atp? Everyone should fight for the 2nd place.

Great match, great commentary! Well played both finalists.
I did not understand: Alireza reached 2.5 points first. And Magnus only 1.5.
Why did magnus win?
Can someone explain me?😅
The only logic I found is if you do the sum of both sets, he wins 3.5-2.5
Since , magnus didn't lost to anyone ( in the group stage , semi final and winners final ) he got an extra chance by grand final reset and whoever wins in reset wins the tournament

Someone explain how Ali Reza beat Magnus 2.5 to 1.5 then there was a reset? Confused
Why was it reset
Because magnus is twice to beat cause he is in the top bracket
Alireza was in the losers bracket, Magnus in the winners, so he had to win twice. Same if Alireza was in winners bracket and Magnus in the losers bracket.
Because the upperbracket winner never lost. So he getsba chance while the rest lost once

Why the hell is there some “reset” in the final match???
