- Review Lithium's mechanism of action in treating bipolar disorder, as well as lithium toxicity.
Lithium is a mood stabilizing drug used to treat bipolar disorder. It has a narrow therapeutic range, and toxicity symptoms start to show up above a blood level of 1.5. Things that can cause lithium toxicity include fluid loss like dehydration and diuretics, low sodium levels, decreased kidney function, or the specific use of NSAIDs or thiazide diuretics. Early signs of lithium toxicity include GI distress, which includes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Late signs of toxicity are neurological problems, like loss of coordination, sedation, confusion, or seizures. Lithium is also teratogenic and should not be given during pregnancy.

This video randomly popped up in my suggested videos. I am a pharmacist. One Nsaid can be used with lithium. Sulindac. But probably more important/easier as a rule to memorize avoiding the whole drug class
I like this better than picmonic! I like how its actually connected to something we can remember?
I don't Picmonic either. I can't relate to what their illustrations are using. I stayed away from Picmonic. Sad that I paid a year's worth.but NOT used it,bec I just get even more confused.

Could you please mention that for the elderly lithium toxicity occurs within therapeutic ranges. Just spent all weekend arguing with doctors over serum levels so they wouldn’t discharge my grandmother.
That certainly sounds plausible, but is highly individualized.
Levels need to be checked closely bc elderly has diminished capacity to excrete drugs naturally
@@cathepar Also, dehydration is common in elderly patients. This could be another reason.
The side effects of this one are brutal. Take extra care to stay hydrated and dont stay out on hot days 😮
