I hate when interviewers in general get too excited and act like too much of a fan and then they try to tell the artist who he is and give too much critical analysis. Then time is wasted, and attention is taken away from the subject. Theres just more tactful ways.

I believe he is referring to the fact that several years ago, Gucci released a mask and later a turtleneck that gave the appearance of blackface. My opinion is that from the context of the show, it was very obvious that his inspirations were in knitwear, not minstrelry. The failure to notice the unfortunate resemblance reflected a deeper, structural failing at Gucci which they have since done some work to resolve. As they haven’t had a similar incident, I would say it must have worked.
Here is what the LA Times reported of his statement on the incident:
“ the pain of these days: my own and that of the people who saw in one of my creative projects an intolerable insult. It’s important for me to let you know that the jumper actually had very specific references, completely different from what was ascribed instead. It was a tribute to Leigh Bowery, to his camouflage art, to his ability to challenge the bourgeois conventions and conformism, to his eccentricity as a performer, to his extraordinary vocation to masquerade meant as a hymn to freedom.”
“The fact that, contrarily to my intentions, that turtleneck jumper evoked a racist imagery causes me the greatest grief,” Michele added. “But I am aware that sometimes our actions can end up with causing unintentional effects. It is therefore necessary taking full accountability for these effects.”
I judge Alessandro to be a sincere, compassionate person who wants his work to liberate people and be open to everyone. I cannot reconcile that person, who is deeply reflected in his work, with a person that would intentionally find inspiration in a damaging and offensive tradition. However, you must judge this for yourself.
