    That alley is in great shape for being 30 years old!! We wore out 4 old wooden alleys, patched and replaced boards every year. Then finally broke down and bought the Prefert tub and alley we have now. It's lasted 20 years so far.
    (BTW, all our alleys have been in the same spot the last 60 years... but wood just doesn't hold up well here)
    Your system works pretty good 👍

      Thanks. I should have bought a Preifert tub/alley and redesigned years ago but I was always too stubborn 🙄. Maybe next year😊

    Cattle work great in that. All my original stuff was homemade I had a headgate that I made that was real similar to yours.

      Thanks. Have you done a video on working with your system? Love to see it.

    That's a fine system. I am going to have to put something together fairly soon. I have been hoping to come across an old headgate somewhere.

      Thanks. We got the head gate for free from my dad when he sold out in ‘85. He bought it new in the ‘60’s when it was new technology 😉. You can have it when I buy a new self closing gate next summer!

      @@Davefromrollinghillsfarms Let me know when you want to get rid of it. I'll come get it. It should work fine for what I need to do.

    Great video! Looking to build something like this. Also - great voice. Radio voice 🎙

      Thanks. We’re beginning a rebuild on the front end later this month. New Tarter-brand headgate on order. Hope to have a video on that in September. I actually worked in radio…part time back in college. Late night rock n’ roll dj on a small town station desperate for help.

    Good evening I want to build something like that. How wide is your alleyway and the chute?

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  6 місяців тому

      This was our old system set at 28 inches at the gate and 40 at chute entrance. We rebuilt last summer tighter, 26 inches front to back. Several videos on our channel from early fall show the build and use. Works much better than the old one.

    How long do you background ur calves for?

    • @Davefromrollinghillsfarms
      @Davefromrollinghillsfarms 2 роки тому +2

      Generally October and November and take them to Motley right after Thanksgiving. This year we weaned in late September because two of the calves were sneaking out the west fence line onto the road🙄. Gotta rebuild it in spring. Generally ship at 550-600lb.

    Seems like a nice and economical shite and headgate . Sure makes life interesting when the cattle don't cooperate.

    How old are they? Weight?

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  11 місяців тому

      These were all April-May calves (2022). Weights were higher than usual, all 580-630 at sale, but we shipped late because an unusual December blizzard kept us from getting to the sale, so we waited until after the Holidays. Had extra hay last year so the holdover didn’t hurt as much. Not so lucky this year.
