I hated that the writers broke Otis and Ruby up too early, not recognising their enormous potential. They bring out the best in each other. She helps him to be more outgoing, while he gets her to be more down to earth, and less conceited.

The line where Ruby says “do you mean you want to be my boyfriend?” and then giddily kisses Otis will always be one of my favorite scenes between these two.
The pairing of Ruby and Otis in just 3 damn episodes in Season 3 created so much hype that it simply blew up the Internet.
I think Maeve and Otis performed well in seasons 1 and 2, but after season 3 we saw incredible chemistry between Ruby and Otis, the image of a modest guy and a popular, confident girl showed itself very well.
Further,
They began to bring out each other, and the way Ruby changed throughout Seasons 3 and 4 made her one of the best characters in the entire series.
Still, the interaction of this couple is head and shoulders above that of Maeve and Otis, it’s a pity that the writers didn’t see their limitless potential.
Preach, I have a soft spot for the "Nerd and Popular Girl" dynamic, and I hated that the writers broke up Otis and Ruby so quickly, in favour of him and Maeve getting together. While I liked them in the first two seasons, they spent so much time apart, and didn't count on Otis' amazing chemistry with Ruby.
ruby's character is so incredible. even if she hides under that "popular girl, doesn't give a shit" kind of character, i think deep down she has the most beautiful heart, and a beautiful of mending things even if they're broken. she didn't deserve to have her heartbroken. ruby and otis for life, as a once motis stan lol

Meave have a lot of problems, she don't understand what type of boy otis is where Ruby understand completely.... that's why Ruby is the girl who gets otis in a wrong time....Meave have only one intention dream , she don't care who will get hurt by her discussion....she should keep dream and live at equal value....idk But they all are in school so otis and Ruby is only about completely school and how to mention mental health and personality in a balance...I mean when we're in school who cares about future that's meave worried off coz she is from shitty family... I think that the couple Ruby and Otis was much lighter, funnier and more refreshing for the series, than all the suffering of the relationship between Otis and Maeve... so if I had to bet my chips on the continuity of the series, if there was a continuity , I would bet on Otis and Ruby...it would leave Maeve with a beautiful writing career, which was always her focus, leaving a shitty life behind.

@@jasonbalenweddingfilm3749 I totally agree with you. Ruby had such a good character arc, cuz she actually grows out of the snobbish popular girl phase and shows her human side. In fact they delve into why she was the way she was as well. Now even after all this if Otis doesn’t realise what a great girl she is, and how much she’s cared for him, it’s only because the writers of the show only cares about showing Maeve and Otis to be a thing.
Yes! Maeve and Otis in the final season are always having miscommunications and genuinely the episode where they finally even go out on a date is marred with toxic traits. The personalities seem misfit too! Maeve is more care-free and hippie like, she wants to have sex in the empty pool, and break into the school. But Otis is a wimp and more sophisticated. The vibe just seemed forced…
I like the fact that he didn't end up with either one. They are all still very young, and I think the point of this show was less of a love story and more of a coming of age story. Maeve and Ruby both grew and changed as people as result of their relationships with Otis and vice versa. They are all still becoming the people that they want to be when they grow up. They are all slightly better versions of themselves as a result of relationships (friendship and otherwise) that they have in this period of their lives, but that doesn't mean any of them are destined to be end game. I love Maeve's letter about how Otis taught her to trust and rely on others, and she will take that with her wherever she goes. It is a beautiful sentiment about how just because something doesn't last forever, doesn't mean it was not worth having.

If that is so why did Maeve say Tyrone is gay? He clearly wasn't played gay and was trying to get close to Maeve and like Jackson, demonstrated real support when she needed it and had no one in her corner. Tyrone was not gay, he never mentions his boyfriend once.

Motis is hyped season 1 and well devellopped on four seasons, Rotis is not credible for more than a short relationship. Hopefully they don't make the mistake to put Otis with Ruby at the end of season 4

I just feel the chemistry more with Ruby and Otis. In the context of their characters Ruby and Maeve are both strong- willed in personality. And both of them felt they were becoming better people once they opened up to Otis but Asa and Mimi's natural chemistry can be felt even in their interviews and promos.
Rotis was a lovely surprise! Asa and Mimi's chemistry is sooo strong. And it was always easy with Ruby. It makes absolute sense. Love should be like that. As much as I like Maeve as a character, it always feel sooo hard with her and Otis. It's like right person, wrong time.

ROTIS 1000%. They are just more compatible, fun and have so much chemistry. Ruby was learning to become more vulnerable and crack her mean shell, while Otis was becoming more confident and standing up for himself. The writers destroyed their storyline this season with Otis being a jerk to Ruby and not even giving us proper closure. So much wasted potential there it’s frustrating, Motis died at the beginning of season 3 as their drama filled story always found reasons to keep them apart and we moved onto something better, Ruby and Otis. Wish they could make a conclusion movie where they clarify what happens to Rotis, as well as some other plot holes that were left with this season.
Yeah they really pissed me off with this season, idk why I felt like Ruby and otis would be together but nope, writers had to ruin it I guess, idc that there still young and figuring shit out. Like can we not just a have happy ending for most of characters atleast

ROTIS FTW. Otis and Maeve might’ve worked in the first two seasons, but it became tiring, like if it would ever work, it would’ve worked already. Plus Ruby and Otis brings up some character development (for both of them)
Agreed! but even as a massive ROTIS fan, I will say that the painful dynamic of MOTIS and the "wish I could make it work, but I can't" of ROTIS is so darn true to life ahahha. You just don't choose who you have feelings for, and especially as a teen when you are still figuring yourself out, its so easy to yearn for the romantic "will we won't we" of a doomed relationship (cough cough MOTIS) instead of the cleary right infront of you and full of potential relationship (ROTIS)
Here’s the thing. I promise not to go too deep. Something about Otis and Ruby is so different, like something that isn’t suppose to happen but still does and it ends being beautiful. Despite, we never actually saw it coming up until the later part of S2, they clicked off so well.. I hate the way it ended. One of my favourite series of all time but it didn’t end up well.
Rotis all the way!! Loved the show til the end, while it was bittersweet I’m sure most of us wanted Ruby to be with Otis in the end.

Never say never! My only concern is if/when it does happen I hope it doesn't cut the original writers/creators out just to make a buck and is done out of respect of the characters and the story. So no Gilmore Girls rehash.

Let's not forget that Ruby quite often treated him like absolute dirt. There were obvious reasons why she was quite often a bully but you can't overlook the fact that she made it very difficult for him to love her. Not to mention the fact that she tried to make him over in season three instead of accepting who he was. We can see that a part of Ruby's journey is that Otis challenged Ruby and she had to start to transcend her own difficult past.

@michaelguest4247 that had nothing to do with otis it was all to do with Ruby and her insecurity which is while she feels the need to act superior to everyone around her. It's not until Otis wants to get to know her better she shows her real personality and introduces him to her dad.
As much as i love Motis in beginning the ending should have been Rotis cause it was clearly said at the end the person who knows him better is Ruby and she was there to help him to clear his name too but still cause of his decision he again used her due to which she felt betrayed again.
Ps:- People who will say that ohhh Otis never said i love you too Ruby so it shouldn't even matter stop.....Being Motis fan myself if Maeve and Otis did show some kind of connection it would make sense too but it's pretty Obvious if maeve get's more opportunity for her career she will always choose her career over love life she just wanted to feel different to have someone to care for her cause she never had that when she grew up. She is self dependent woman who is taking care of her from the beginning it's not like she doesn't like or love Otis but still she will choose her first priority that is her career. Whereas Ruby literally changed her personality from being a bitch to caring woman who looks after her father and otis just she wanted to show how bad she is to make her look strong she even stopped calling Maeve cock biter in later episode. She had GREAT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT....and if Otis would have chosen her both would have been happy as otis clearly said when he was around with ruby that he feels left behind when Maeve isn't around him but that moment with ruby he didn't felt it and said i am glad we are hanging out.....in the end of episode both are confused like will they meet or not and there's no guarantee it's pretty obvious Maeve will choose her career over relationship more cause of first priority. So this ending didn't made any sense it's just cliffhanger to people like us to think in a what if scenario!!!!!
Here's the thing tho, even though Otis did love Maeve over Ruby. I do believe deep down Otis DID have feelings for Ruby, it's not unrealistic for people to have complex feelings for others while still favouring one in particular.
Otis was just too obsessed with wanting a relationship with Maeve to work that he didn't want to risk losing whatever chances he has left in it. Which included treating Ruby the way he did, after he found himself falling asleep next to her and realizing his feelings for her are stronger than he thought. Even Roland (Ruby's dad) could tell Otis had feelings for Ruby, just based on the way he stared at her which lead him to awkwardly excusing himself from the room in S4E3.

I prefer Rotis...Cuz Maeve always treated Otis as friend and treated him like last on the list of her important things...gotta say that writers slightly repaired this flaw by letting her say in the end that she wants still to make it work in US but still her future or dream work was more important to her...she also made him do things he does not feel comfortable...actually he was not comfortable with her...with Ruby he was very natural...and with Maeve he was like trying too hard make her like him...I think this kind of crazyness is crush on someone...but with right person you need to feel and be natural and I felt that he had this with Ruby...she was there for him...tried to help him even when she was hurt by him...when Maeve felt hurt by him she ignored him...Ruby got lower for her standards as for type of guy as what he should wear as for how she will look with him or what will people think...and in Ruby's world her high standard is most precious thing for her...to compare with Maeve it's like Maeve give up her writer dream (but she did not)...also I think Ruby and Otis had much in common like they are both pretenders she pretends to be above things and bitchy to hide her sh*t childhood and dad's disease...Otis pretends to be good in contact with people...he is but only if it does not include him...he hides his complexes from having parents apart and his lousy mom issues and his sex issues...too bad writers did not put a bit more effort to explore Ruby and Otis relationship...their scenes are best in last two seasons...
I really hoped Otis would have fallen in love with ruby and addressed this to maeve after she left, I think they should have had a final conversation with each other over the phone, where they should have talked about how they need to move on from one another and maeve should have helped Otis realise he is in love with ruby and should go for her while he still had the chance. It would have been so heartwarming to see the show end a week later with Otis and Ruby happy together and then he apologises to his mum and finds the letter from Maeve. Everyone's journey would have come full circle and it would have been great.

Ruby on the other hand, pretended to be those things out of self preservation, but underneath she’s actually loving and caring, just by seeing how she is with her father.
Otis dumb for fumbling Ruby. Maeve a sweet heart but Ruby and Otis felt more genuine and natural. AND ruby said the l word right off the bat!

SPOILERS: Ruby was a bitch to Maeve for years. I like Ruby's character growth, but it was pretty cathartic to see Maeve finally put her in her place after Erin died, even though I do think Ruby was genuine in her condolences. Rotis was cute for half a season, but Maeve is the realest character in the show.
I agree. Honestly as the series went along I kind of feel like Maeve became the heart and soul of the show. Honestly I don’t hate the ending of the series with Otis and Maeve not being together but I feel that could’ve been the conclusion at the end of the 3rd season and you could’ve ended the show from there.
It's sad that Otis ended up with neither Maeve or Ruby, but the show creator says that he and Maeve could possibly reconnect when they're older.

They find out Otis and ruby’s potential after making them the cover couple literally half a season.
And than find out the potential was insane, they literally cancelled her and Otis’s development curve since S3E5.
Otis than become a Maeve-holic, he is selfish and Maeve centric.
It’s ok to not say “I love you” back to Ruby even though he talk Ruby into “stop being casual”, but to jump to Maeve the second she become available to him is another thing. He simply is a jerk after that, and I thought Season 4 is supposed to fix all that no matter who he end up with.
But season 4 did nth of that, he become more selfish, he blame everyone for his own life. He never support Maeve for the states, he is also absent when Ruby cannot settled into new school.
The minute Maeve and him have long distance issue he think he can keep Ruby close….he talk her into run his campaign but he ghosted Ruby at the second Maeve return.

Otis really cared about Ruby, he was the one asking her to be her boyfriend because he wanted to see where their relation could go, although she wanted to keep their relation a secret. But he loved Maeve since the beginning. And when Ruby told him she loved him, he knew he didn’t felt the same and preferred being honest with her and break it off, even though he was sad about it.
He didn’t “jump” on Maeve. He tried the whole summer and part of the school year to forget about Maeve but his feeling for her was too strong. And when she discovered the truth and finally admitted her own feelings, finally it was it.
Yes, Otis was a jerk when Maeve was in America because he was insecure : he never experienced long distance relationship ! He came to Ruby because he needed a friend and at the time, Otis and Eric were distant. And she was willing to give him that friendship. But I admit, he also was a jerk with Ruby for not being here for her in Cavendish. And he completely forgot her when Maeve came back because he wanted to be a good boyfriend (and a good friend) for her with Erin’s passing, and being at Maeve’s side.
I was the first one being upset with Otis and Maeve arguing but we too often forget that they’re only seventeen and that they make mistakes. And he made mistakes with Ruby too, but this is what make them evolve. They learned from that.
I think Rotis was a cute fling, but it was a necessity for Motis to exist as a couple.
I was so disappointed to see Maeve and Otis part … “He could have joined her in America”, or “she left Otis because she prefer her career over him”. That’s difficult to say. She was willing to try long distance knowing it will be hard for them, and he was brave enough to tell her off while it broke his heart.
I understand your opinions but I like the fact that we can have different interpretations of the ships, and have teams as well 😅
I also like the fact that the end leave a space to our imagination. Who knows : maybe Rotis or Motis will be endgame at last ?

What I am not ok with is Otis’ character growth. They simply just plot him as childish and selfish as he can, as Maeve-centric as he can be. The point on you saying he want to be a good boyfriend for Maeve is valid but at the same time. He got nearly a day waiting at the car with Amie. He care the campaign so much he cannot text his campaign manager back? Seriously? There are all playwright decision to project him as jerk as he can be. This DOES NOT make sense to me because they are good playwright, the journey they put roles like Eric, Adam and his parents, Amie is fabulous. The growth with Maeve also is good, Jean as well (personally I love her sister in the cast). But their cover boy who supposed to enjoy the most air time and growth, literally just being shut down.
@@knkyeung7812 it is true, Otis’ development is very clumsy. I completely agree with you. The part where he didn’t response to Ruby while waiting the entire day for Maeve was so stupid, but not completely OOC : he was acting the exact same way during the first season with Eric. So yes, it is frustrating to see Otis not evolving in this direction. But, again, he supposed to be 17 or 18 years old, so he makes mistakes. You can also see this “non-action” towards Ruby because of his anxiety and feeling bad for keeping a secret of them spending time together to Maeve.
I genuinely think that the writers had others plots to achieve Otis’ arc but were forced to shut them down because of the fourth season being the last whilst they were literally in the middle of their work. Like you said, the other characters’ developments are great. It feels rushed. But if we look at this that way, Otis grew up, maybe not enough for us, but he still does at his own level.

Motis is the definition of a SIMP, Rotis is the definition of find someone who compliments you, someone you can be yourself and still boost up your qualities and help you overcome your weaknesses, the scene when they showed 11 year old Ruby developed her character SO MUCH, you understand why she has this exterior shell, to protect herself from people who may harm her, it did everything better.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I liked Otis with Maeve *and* Otis with Ruby. That being said, I wasn't disappointed with season 4's ending. Otis wasn't always the greatest best friend to Eric. When he needed him most, he was hanging out with Maeve or Ruby. And I think, maybe in adulthood it's more understandable to put your partners first, but I don't think relationships should be anything too serious during high school. Especially if it means you're going to ditch your friends as soon as your crush/partner gives you so much as a crumb of attention. And, anyway, Otis couldn't even tell Ruby that he loved her back, which broke my heart to see. Maeve and Otis just.. seemed less compatible during their college years. They seemed so clearly on different paths at some point. Again, I liked both pairings. Just wasn't mad with season 4's ending. It felt surreal and, idk, appropriate? Not every high school couple stays together once they graduate. Even if they do, it can sometimes turn rocky or disloyal, depending on individual circumstances/choices.
Then again, in Otis' defense, I can't help but wonder if running a clinic and helping so many people caused him to be more selfish/put himself or his love life first? I know, at least from personal experience, that sometimes always offering a hand to others who can't/won't do the same can turn into internalized pain over time. I just wish he was there more for Eric, especially when he'd been waiting for him and got beat up instead. That being said, I know friendships can't come without conflict, even in fiction. But that part hurt a bit to see on a very personal level. But, I also understand and to the way that constantly helping or listening to others when they have little to say/help you will eventually leave you wanting to put yourself first. I relate to *all* sides, though, anyway. Maeve knowing what she wants, briefly giving it up, then returning back to it. Loving someone who couldn't love you back, like Ruby. Helping others and eventually putting yourself first, no matter the cost, like Otis. And, lastly, needing someone when they couldn't/wouldn't be there, like Eric. I think this show - and many others - made me realize why I prioritize the concept of letting me know in advanced, from others, when they can't show up.
Despite not being a kid anymore, and knowing and agreeing with everthing u said, the maeve otis shit broke my fkin heart in pieces, i resonnate so much with their story and my first and single love had a lot in common with Maeve, cant think logically in these situations and i'm heartbreaking during this s4 specially cause i think its a bit rushed and it could have end better for everyone in term of depth

Obviously if they allow Rotis to have good moments together people will like that, the same way people would have liked Motis at the same situation. I started the show with motis but later on I completely jumped on rotis train. They are just perfect for each other. I got so uninterested in everything else, I just wanted more rotis. This has never happened before, I have never changed my loyalties in the middle of a show but ruby and her father made me do it this time.
Love makes both people better, not bring out the worst in each other...Maeve and Otis def needed to grow separately if they're gonna be able to be together later on.
I think Maeve and Otis had the best scenes when they were just running the clinic and being funny. I really liked how Otis and Ruby's relationship progressed. I think when Ruby let Otis in and he left her crying in that scene it was much more heartbreaking compared to him and Maeve ending things for her writing. With Maeve gone I would have liked to see Otis and Ruby end up together. It would be so interesting considering how they both were season 1. It would be a great mix of how Otis had grown confident in himself and Ruby letting her guard down and focussing on what really matters.

I really wanted to see Ruby's growth on 5 but... On the other hand Motis feels they don't have feelings or attachment. They let me down in 5 immensely. Individually I loved Maeve character but Rotis is my choice.

I do think that, Ruby saying she has enough friends now, is a BIG opening for a relationship with them. I was team Rotis, but do think that Motis relationship is a very pure, loving and true.. Thus said, the series taking Maeve to her own growth journey is greater than the love between these two, and I am so happy that Maeve goes to her journey to concur the world, she deserves it 100%.
Hopefully we will see some happy ever after epilogue movie or something or even a fan made something that gives that relationship Otis, Maeve and Ruby deserve.

Not only did the hype they tried to create on the “will they, won’t they”, start to make Otis & Maeve seem toxic and unhealthy for each other, but what they brought to Otis & Ruby which was only meant to be a temporary obstacle (similar to Jackson, Ola and Isaac) turned into something just as magical to the dynamic Otis & Maeve had in Season 1!
Plus when you put into account Asa & Mimi’s amazing chemistry, and how their characters were able to bring out the best in each other that Otis & Maeve were incapable of doing due to their inability to come to compromises and confront each other properly in a more communicative manner. It’s no wonder, so many people started shipping Rotis as opposed to Motis!

I think the last season goofed everything up. Ruby had an incredible character arc, they delve into why she was the way she was in the earlier seasons. However, Otis never loved her (fool) because he didn’t bother therapazing her as much as he did with Maeve.
I don’t appreciate how Maeve and Otis get along in the final season. They are almost always fighting, and have so many miscommunications!! Blame Otis for that mostly. Anyway, the episode where she asks him to have sex in the empty pool really irked me…It seemed like they were toxic, not each other’s vibe at all (Maeve more carefree and hippie-like, meanwhile Otis was wimpy and sophisticated).
I wish Ruy and Otis could be a thing, but the writer clearly didn’t want that. Rotis alternative ending could’ve been like: Otis gains clarity on why Ruby was the way she was, he spends more time with her and sees how well she understands him and cares for him (through the sexTherapist competition), and he falls for her too. Otis being the nice guy he is, doesn’t cheat on Maeve though, and let’s her know. Anyway Maeve says she’s her better self in America. ❤

i seriously don't know how can anyone ship rotis after the "whenever maeve's around, nothing else matters to him" scene. ruby's reaction killed me. i've never shipped them and even i felt bad. rotis was one sided since the beginning and otis unintentionally played with ruby's feelings. maeve and otis were always meant for each other.
In real life, probably neither of these women would make a good match for Otis. But within the universe of the show, Ruby and Otis were a more fun pair to watch.
