The key takeaway here is that Ralphie tells his mother, his teacher, and Santa about the BB gun. He never mentions it to his father, who seems indifferent and distracted by the furnace, the dogs next door and his major award, yet he knew all along what his son wanted. He was almost as excited to give his son the gift as his son was to receive it. There's even a clue in the movie when the father says, "Santa knows. He always knows."
I have watched this movie for 35 years. Seen it so many times, I have every scene in my head. Yet, I never EVER stopped and realized that. At one time, all boys had a level of fear of their father. It kept us in check. But yeah dude, I never once realized that detail. Amazing!

I grew up with this film. Born in '78 in Cleveland. My dad grew up in Lakewood where the school was. My mom tracked down Life Buoy soap (they didn't have the red one, but it didn't taste much different than the normal soap). I still have the Red Ryder BB gun my parents bought me. The sight is off, but I worked around it. I now live in Columbus and my parents have passed, but the movie is a must watch every year.
I'm a Cleveland girl (not far away from the house) and have done a lot of research while we were watching the house being transformed into the movie house. In now down by cincy. Moved down here about 6 years ago
56 years old and this is the first Christmas I ever watched this movie with my family. We’ve seen all the classics except this one. What was I missing all these years?!
Imagine making acting out A Christmas Story your tradition, and then the film's director comes over to say hi. I'm so glad everyone has happy memories of making this movie.
I grew up watching this every Christmas, with my parents and brother. And this year, we're going to watch this with our daughter, who's 7 now, and can appreciate it.
Same. I've been waiting for mine to get old enough to appreciate it. However, they have seen me bring out the dvd (and then blu ray) over the years with the other Christmas movies and they have said they want to watch it, so this will be the year. Ages 9, 7 and 4. Maybe tomorrow on Christmas Eve. I hope yours likes it, enjoy!
This is our favorite movie ever!! My husband grew up in this era so he says this is like watching his family’s home movies! Pure joy!! Thank you all so much!!
It’s Christmas Eve 2024 and I’m waiting for the marathon to start at 8 o’clock tonight! Other than being just an all-around great Christmas movie, I think why this movie is such a success all these years later, is because it shows the yearning and the desire for simpler more innocent times in a world that has turned itself upside down. Merry Christmas everyone!👍🏼🙏🎄🎊
Thank you Jean, for writing such an excellent story, and for allowing it to be adapted to so many other forms. I've been unbelievably lucky to have played Grown Up Ralphie in the stage play so many times I've lost count. Recently I even played Jean in A Christmas Story The Musical for the first time. I've had some of the best times of my life because of this story, because of this movie and the work done by the cast and crew. Have a Merry Christmas, all And don't shoot your eye out
Zack Ward looks exactly the same. He has that perfect sly fox villain look. But he seems like the nicest dude. I only know him from the movie. He did great.
My husband watches the marathon every year I’ll be walking in rooms and he has it playing He can quote all the lines My favorite character is the Old Man I love the narration and sarcasm
I love that Peter Billingsley had a very authentic American Christmas just like in the movie, I’m sure it made his job of acting like a kid at Christmas that much easier.
My top 5 Christmas movies are as follows: “BEN-HUR” (1959), “A CHRISTMAS STORY” (1983), “KING OF KINGS” (1961), “THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD” (1965), and “MR. MAGOO’S CHRISTMAS CAROL” (1962).
This movie has become larger than a movie. I mean, it plays 24 hours STRAIGHT every year. I have watched this movie more times than any other movie on Earth and the kicker is, I only watch it close to Christmas time. When I was younger I stayed up for the entire 24 hours of A Christmas Story. I watched EVERY single showing that year just cause I was a teenager and wanted to see if I could. At the time it also was helping me hang on to my inner kid at a time I was too cool for that. This is a special piece of art, it's more than just a movie for us. The memories I have of watching this with family is priceless.
I Love watching this film on Christmas EVE and Christmas Day . Best Christmas movie ever and I'm going to be watching it again this year in less than a week from now.
What a treasure! I love how gracious they all are. I bought small versions of the "F R A G I L E" panel and the leg lamp for my mom. She keeps them up year-round in her guest bedroom, eliciting nostalgic smiles. My dad, now in his 80s said this movie captures what times were like. The documentary "Road Trip for Ralphie" is precious. An engaged couple exuberantly seek out the movie's filming locations. It's almost as wonderful to tag along in their journey.
I wish like everything I could share a picture of one of my friends on here. He looks identical to Scut. His name is Shawn but I have called him Scut for years and years. I've never seen anyone look so much like another person in my life. So I literally think of this movie non stop.
There are several movies I watch every Christmas season. I closed out this Christmas with this movie and It’s A Wonderful Life. Lovely to watch both of them.
I was 19 when I meet Ralphie in Orlando at the Hard Rock back in the late 90's Xmas Season and I won the contest on the radio to be the first to meet him. I still have his pic of me and my sister and I put it up every year! People ask if that was my college boyfriend and I'm like I wish! That was Ralphie from Christmas Story and the lines keep going the whole visit to my home. Love you Peter!!
I first saw this movie when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade in the early 90s. Up until I was 22-23ish, I thought this movie came out in the 1960s. I thought the kids in the movie were my dad's age. I didn't even notice he was in Elf, I went back and watched the DVD to see his cameo. I had no idea that was Peter in Elf. I only went back and watched it because someone else mentioned it to me. I was SHOCKED at how young 'Ralphie" was at the tome.
That man at 5:24 , to those who don't already know, is Jean Shepherd, author, 70's radio host, raconteur, and the author of this movie. He is also the author of several humorous books, and in the 1970's had his own radio show on NY Radio station WOR. Back in those days, some people appreciated Jean Shepherd's humor so much that they personally recorded his radio shows, and many of those recordings are posted elsewhere here on UA-cam. Edit: And he is also the narrator of this movie.
Now if only Billingsley could possibly portray the Roman Centurion Lucius Catanius aka Lucius of Cyrene in a Biblical movie epic with Ian Petrella as Jesus, R.D. Robb as Disciple Simon Peter, Scott Schwartz as Disciple Thaddeus, Zack Ward as Disciple Bartholomew, Chevy Chase as Pontius Pilate, Clint Eastwood as The Older Lucius Catanius (doing narration), and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
One year for Chritmas I got the movie on DVD. I was so happy I could not wait to open the rest of my gifts ust so that I could go into the other room and watching it. Then for my very last gift I got my mother handed me a long wrapped box. When I opened it it was a red rider BB gun. I quickly ran outside put a few targes up in an oak tree and on the 3rd shot the BB bounced off the branch and hit me in the forhead. When I walked back into the house I had my head down low laughing. When my mother saw what happened she also started laughing and said those famous line. "You are going to shoot your eye out."

One of my favorite and one of the funniest scenes of the whole movie is the scene where darren mcgavin's character the old man recieved the leg lamp and set up it then peter billingsley's character ralphie was rubbing the leg lamp like he was trying to get a genie to pop out of it. 😂😂😂
I am as old as this movie. I watched this when I was a kid and now I have kids of my own. I just hope my kids will understand that this is not what 1983 looked like.

Like so many my favorite holiday movie. I'm a 71 yr old grandma. I hace A Christmas Story and A Christmas Story Christmas. The sequel is perfect. I watch it all of the time. Thank you guys.
My grandmother worked at that Higbees. The house used for the outside shots is right around the corner from where my dad grew up in Cleveland. My wife's aunt is an extra in the movie. She is in the Santa/ slide scene. The elementary school is right next to the old West Tech High School, where my dad and grandfather went to school. That movie clicks with my childhood in Northern Ohio.
I grew up on 19th and denison. Our neighbors across the street owned the bar on the corner. I love seeing the "land" in movies. You see a bunch of it in the new superman trailer
And lastly you can actually go down the slide. It's in medina at a place called castle Noel's. This time of year you need to get reservations though and it's usually sold out. Amazing place
I saw this movie when it released at the ole Portage Theater on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. There weren't alot of people who went out initially to see it. I and another movie goer laughed so hard at this movie! The other dude laughed as loud as I did especially every scene with the 'old man'. Great movie!
For what it's worth, along with others I feel compelled to watch this movie every Christmas; also 4 or 5 others. I can relate to that time period so that makes it enjoyable as well. Also, believe it or not, I had a neighbor a couple years older than me that actually had a Red Ryder bb gun with a wooden stock but w/o the compass. Fond memories.
I remember seeing this film in the theater. Laughed quite a bit, but also cried. The family portrayed were a thousand times better off than many families today.
My mom loved it because she grew up on Cleveland Street in Piqua, OH. I switched twice in the movie theater in middle school. I watched with my sons. Family tradition.
My local independent theater just played this the other night and to be able to watch this in an actual theater was so great! My absolute favorite Christmas movie!
