Great description - I was lucky enough to be right up front at a few Dead shows in the late 80’s… got to see him play some of the classic ballads that most Deadheads agree really demonstrated everything you need to know about his live performances (Morning Dew, Stella Blue, and not a “ballad” but certainly a cornerstone of what he was about - Bird Song). The sound coming directly from his amp, not the PA… unequivocally life-altering stuff. Peace!!
Hari: "It's like he was playing from space...." Yes, yes, YES!!! Jerry Garcia definitely channeled cosmic energies when he played, he brought us all up into the stratosphere and beyond with his solos. Welcome to the family, Hari~ 💜✌🎶
This was a favourite song of Jerry Garcia and he performed it over 200 times in concert. As a live version, this is beautiful with some of Jerry's personal touches making this a great tune with absolute perfection and guitar excellence. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cosmo. Glad your back. Amazing performance. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Jerry playing his famous "Tiger" guitar, made by Luthier Doug Irwin, and playing a great Beatles song in his distinctive style, if you ever had the very good fortune to see him and his ever changing band live. Jerry and his other band also covered a lot of Beatles songs, saw a bust out of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" one magical night. That's why i kept going back, and back and back, because you never knew what would happen, ever.
What a version! I’ve seen JGB play this live several times, but this version… Wow! Transcendental guitar solo and ~~~goosebumps~~~ from that last verse

JGB shows were always fun and different. No two shows were ever alike. He used this band to play songs that the Grateful Dead just didn't do. This is a wonderful deep dive if you're interested.
Sweet, even hooked up the video, not easy to find. One of my favourite JGB vibes thanks to John Kahn on bass and the single note finish to Jerry's solo; magic. Stay Grateful.
The Dead covered over 300 songs, and had nearly 200 original songs of their own. Plus, well over 2000 concerts, most of them lasting 3 hours. And here's the really cool part--they never played the same song the same way. Because they are a jam band, rather than a top 40, play it just like on the record-type band, their music stays alive and doesn't die. It's always familiar and fresh, never wearing out and losing its punch.
I love the bouncy mystical feel that Jerry's band brought to this song and Lucy in the Sky. My Beatle fan child self was in bliss whenever they'd bring these out.

Jerry Garcia pre 1981-82 was a legitimate musical genius. The unfortunate thing is people hear his later stuff when he was ruined by heroin & instantly dismiss him.

Rest In Peace to Jerry and his favorite bassist, John Kahn. The keyboardist and drummer are still doing it today, Ozzie Ahlers and Greg Errico. You’re not wrong about Garcia being high. In 80 he was likely knee deep in heroin. He had his good days but many of them were not.
As you said, the early 80's included heroin, and Garcia was often visibly "in his own space" while playing on stage. Although the substance gradually damaged Jerry over time, the depth of his musicality and the soulfulness of his playing in that period were at all-time highs. The astonishing depth of Coltrane's musicality is really the closest parallel I can think of. I choose to accentuate the positives, and there were lots of them.

The Beatles version can't be beaten, but there are many good covers of this tremendous song. I love the song because it reminds me of how aware John Lennon was of the people around him. Greatest songwriter along with McCartney. The McCartney bass tone is needed on all versions in my opinion. Easy to take for granted until it isn't there. A well known bass player who has played on more than 2000 albums said recently that only McCartney could get that tone as his attack on bass is that good. The most incredible Beatles cover I have ever seen was AURORA doing Across the Universe live on like a version.
Beatles can’t be beaten ? Always subjective but most vocal coaches would declare Doug Parkinson’s version to be light years ahead of anything sung by any of the Beatles. lol
@@Rassskle Meh. He's got a nice voice, although it's not well-suited for this song. He and his band miss the song's vibe, turning The Beatles original and this JGB cover's rhythmic pulse into a melodic one unbefitting the song and story behind it. Any vocal coach worth their salt would tell you that.
@@Cosmo-Kramer HaHaHa....... I guess we differ big time in musical tastes. I lean towards blues and rock while you clearly prefer pop and other music crafted for radio and the herd mentality of the masses.
I believe this is Capitol Theatre, March 1980. Seems like yesterday. I always had a preference for the JGB. Many Dead followers didn't feel the same. The JGB often performed two shows a night. Each show lasted around two hours. Too short for many "Dead" fans. The music spoke for itself, however. Jerry's covers of Jimmy Cliff's "Harder They Come," Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," and "Simple Twist of Fate," are timeless. My favorite being "Simple Twist of Fate." Review that one. Thanks for the memories.

Just listened to Aurora. It was delightful. Far from the best Beatles cover. But delightful, nonetheless.
@@Rassskle Yes, cause JGB is, "clearly pop music crafted for radio and the herd mentality of the masses". Lol...what a maroon!
Very reggae feel.
John Kahn on the bass is absolutely responsible for the reggae feel
I believe this is Capitol Theatre, March 1980. Seems like yesterday. I always had a preference for the JGB. Many Dead followers didn't feel the same. The JGB often performed two shows a night. Each show lasted around two hours. Too short for many "Dead" fans. The music spoke for itself, however. Jerry's covers of Jimmy Cliff's "Harder They Come," Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," and "Simple Twist of Fate," are timeless. My favorite being "Simple Twist of Fate." Review that one. Thanks for the memories.
That's not right. I put the city, venue and date in the song's Intro.
I seen the Garcia band at the Capital Theater in NJ, I had front row seats. The security took all my beer but they missed my hash!😊
My 3 favorite Jerry Garcia live tracks (with Merl Saunders):

Hari, maybe you can do a reaction to the Grateful Dead covering the Beatle's Rain. An amazing underrated Beatles tune. When GD played it, it was magical! (Only performed it a couple of handful of times during their final years.
Listen to "tangled up in blue" by Jerry Garcia Band on UA-cam. SMOKIn!
They were almost certainly tripping. I can only imagine that for 30 plus years. Being Jerry had to wear on him at some point
More JG band, please. Cats under the sky, and so many more
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I like every cover he does better than the original artists besides Jimmy Cliff stuff
Wait.
Are you telling us you haven’t heard “Dear Prudence” by The Beatles, Harri? 😱
Jerry’s version is much better than the Beatles version. Beatles version is crazy and chaotic, like a bad acid trip.
Thanks for doing this! You would probably love the song "The Maker" by Jerry Garcia. Check it out!
JG was a heroin addict, he looked and most probably was high when he played this. Still an amazing adaptation of John's great song.
JL was an addict too so it’s fitting.
What does that matter listen to the music play!
