  • Built in 1972 Selandia briefly held the record as the fastest cargo ship in the world until the SL-7s debuted.
3 B&W 84K engines center 12cyl wing engines 9cyl made 85,000 hp through 3 propellors and shafts. a feat I don’t believe was ever attempted again except with her sister Jutlandia. These vessels could easily cruise at 30kts
This was my first ship after the maritime academy where I only had ever seen steam propulsion. It was impressive! Currently USNS Gilliland I sailed on her extensively during operation Iraqi Feedom and Enduring Freedom in 2003. We regularly cruised at 27kts in winter seas in the North Atlantic where the turbochargers where barely loaded
I know this isn’t the best video I lost my video of all 3 engines on a power run. Had a friend send me these clips he had and I pieced them together. I wouldn’t have kept the sloppy valve lash or indicator blowing

I was second engineer on Selandia in 1990. It is correct you can, and we did, adjust the valve clearence with the engine running slow speed. The funny thing is, that all 3ea. Engines (1 with 12 and 2 with 9 cylinders) had hydraulic valve lash arrangements below the rod, but they required some new seals quite often.

I always wanted to take to crew from then. I was on it from 2001-2003 after the navy conversion. They had replaced the generators with caterpillars x4 3608. Everything was diesel fuel. We ran unattended but it was never a good night for the duty man maybe 3 nights a month alarm free. I think 127 rpm was the most I saw

It would take 3 guys to do valve lash. 1 guy holding each wrench, another with the sledge to losen or lock it down and that guy would have the feeler gauges. They used to come lose a lot!

Yeah I wasn’t onboard for the video. Those rockers were always coming loose took 3 guys and a sledgehammer to adjust them. It’s worse when the engines don’t run regularly first month of moving for OIF it was constantly a battle. Settled out after that we ran it pretty hard for 6 months

This engine room with main engines Burmeister & Wain (? cylinders in line) : for me , it was the « good old time » . Need exhaust valve adjustment : don’t worry, reduce the rpm around 50 rpm, take 1 big hammer + 2 spanners + 3 guys , do it and put back the lever on Full.
You can’t do that anymore with a 18 cylinders Wartsila (or MAN) 4 stroke engine, 30000Hp.

Sailed on her as Chief Engineer, bringing her out of layup in the late teens.

Good question, I’ve gone significantly faster on steam turbine powered ships. It’s funny because it does not look fast at all. These 950’ class ships just cruise through the water minimally effected by sea conditions
