History's First Nose Job

- When did nose jobs become popular? The first cosmetic nose job didn't happen until the late 1800s, but the procedure dates back 2,500 years. Around the 6th century BCE, an Indian doctor wrote about a process for grafting a flap of cheek skin over the nose.
Unlike other early medical practices causing more harm than good, such as leeching or rubbing animal dung into wounds, methods used by ancient plastic surgeons were surprisingly effective and modern (but incredibly painful).

What body part (if any) would you want to get cosmetic surgery on?
Remember when plastic surgery was a taboo subject?
Now when you mention Botox, nobody raises an eyebrow.
None. Love whatcha got! And ya know...somebody is gonna find it attractive too!
Actually, my nose, but I don’t think I’ll get it done. Mainly because I would already consider myself conventionally attractive and am scared that changing my nose would ruin my face. Im thankful for what I already have, although I have had plastic surgery to correct a birth defect I had on my chest. Completely life changing!
My big toe lol... its fat...rest my body is fine fine...
Its AD NOT CE/BCE
I had a skin cancer removed from my head and they used skin from my butt to cover it. Yes, I’m a butt-head
😂 😭 oh my gawd
As long as you’re healthy and well! Congrats for making it through all of that butt head!
Rather be a literal butt-head than someone who is a jerk.
Glad your ordeal is now resolved 🙏
Huhuhuhuhuhuhu
I had to study a small section on Sushruta in high school. The guy was a genius. He used to use the pincers of ants to stitch up surgical wounds as they would eventually dissolve into the body before the advent of soluble surgical threads.
Woah thats amazing
and his cataract surgery where he pierces the eye with a needle at angle to remove the cataract.
Whats a pincer of ant? How did he do it?
@@chip9649
Their jaws, two sharp structures that can grip and stab other insects.
@@chip9649 The thing ants use to bite. He picked up the ant, made it bite together the torn flesh and then cut the head off leaving only the pincers.
The origin of telling kids, "I got your nose," is frickin dark
I'm always amazed with how ancient civilizations are capable to invent such phenomenal methods om everything with simple tools. Amazing
They we not using simple tools the History taught to us in books is a false narrative, read Occult based books like the Secret Doctrine and the secret teachings of all ages to find the truths.
Look up for kailsha temple in India carved by vertical excavation methods 1000s of years before. That too on basalt and granite rock... Almost 3 d printed like.. archeologist couldn't find an explanation.
There's always been egomaniacs who think they can accomplish anything. Sometimes they just manage.
yet we do the stupidest stuff XD
Because the ones before taught their for fathers ..and after the great deluge some of that information and knowledge was passed on
A video on the origins and evolution of prosthetic limbs would be interesting
Yeah, that would be cool!
I remember asking in school why noses on statues were always broken. One teacher had no idea what I was asking, but another teacher… my art teacher, said it was probably because of how the clay was scored or the stone was chiselled. She said to her knowledge it was a weak point on the sculpture.
I had no idea there was a WHOLE STUDY on nose disfigurement, and let alone a predominant form of ancient punishment!
I’m 33, and never knew any of this! That first teacher made me feel weird for noticing something odd like that.
In ancient Egypt they defaced statues of earlier kings who were disgraced (or whom the current king wanted to insult).
It would also make sense to say that it's the weak point of the sculpture because when sculpting a face, it sticks out the most. But I bet there were a lot of statues that were purposely vandalized as humiliation.
I always thought that the noses of statues were damaged when the statue fell. Since they protrude from the face, they would obviously take the brunt of the damage when the face of the statue hit the floor or the ground.
Your teachers didn't know? It is common knowledge that a new ruler will break the nose of the old ruler's statue. It happened in Rome, Greece and Egypt but then again maybe they were not interested in that history.
It’s because they were black.
I think this is one of the weirdest episodes but it was really educational!
Sushruta made hundreds of surgeries possible long before modern civilization could imagine.
He had surgical equipment so sharp that it could cut a hair in two by the root to the top.
Whatever you say buddy
@@mawlinzebra I think splitting a hair is a bit much but, after looking up obsidian blades being used by Sushruta, he was ahead of his time.
@@mawlinzebra dude there is a stone sculpture in hoysala Karnataka. Where the holes on the stone crown is so small and minute that archeologist couldn't explain how simple tools cannot accomplish it. To be ignorant is bliss but pretending is crime

Slight correction the Code of Hammurabi was Babylonian not Egyptian.
IKR? Ancient Egyptians followed the 42 Laws of Ma'at.
Came here to say this
😂 was going to comment that
كنت هقولها
He also forgot to mention nose job did by ancient Egyptians.
Can you do a video about how humans used to treat balding in the early days and what kind of social effects it had?
It really amazes me just how smart people were in the past regarding medicine. Absolutely incredible…
Without all of their knowledge we would have nothing today!
I had a nose job in 2009. I had broken my nose twice and had breathing difficulties. I had pain from floating bone spurs. I am glad I did it, but it was so painful
Imagine having it done with no pain meds 😮
I am grateful for the advances in rhinoplasty as it meant curing my daughter's severely deviated septum was as painless as possible, and quick to heal. She can breathe better, and her sleep apnea is gone. Thank you Weird History for showing me how this has progressed medically!
Awesome! Glad she’s doing well!
How long was recovery? I have a deviated septum and it’s not too bad but certainly annoying 😩
My husband had a septoplasty today. I am so excited for him to be able to BREATHE.
Gives a whole new meaning to calling someone a “butt face!”
Boy am I fortunate to be born in an advanced century
The doctors who successfully performed this surgery back in the day are true geniuses.
Well, this gives new meaning to the quote "Don't cut off your nose to spite your face."
The Code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian legal text composed c. 1755-1750 BC. Hammurabi has no relation to the Ancient Egyptians.
@UA-cam Is Jihadi slut I care!
@UA-cam Is Jihadi slut what a bizarre comment. You’re saying no one watching a history video cares about history?
I’m going to tell my motherinlaw that in medieval times nosy mother-in-law’s used to get their nose chopped off
You are a unsung hero for this comment 😁
😂😂😂👍
😂 lol
😂
Please tell us her response
The narrator should try out as the host for jeopardy! The flair for those huge complicated words is Trebek-esque!
This channel really living up to its name
I would have asked about this, but I didn't want to be seen as nosey.
🤣🤣😃
That armpit to nose process looked so freaking miserable….😳🥺
Thank you for warning me halfway to the video, this is too horrifying omg
When my doctor told me my plastic surgery was free of charge...
the look on my face was priceless.
LOL
My body is a reflection of my life lived and my inheritance from my ancestors before me. No, I would not be getting cosmetic surgery.
If it were "cosmetic" surgery due to injury or ailments that hindered my health in some way, then yes. I would opt for that if I could afford it.
Finally finished my school works. I can binge watch (again) 😂❤️
Nose jobs are no joke. I've had two in my life, one to get rid of my hump and deviated septum. I had the second surgery to fix what the doctor did during the first surgery.
Ur nose is so nice tho from ur profile pic !
@@jaiocchialini1420 thanks. It wasn't always like that though
Im supposed to be writing an essay right now, but here i am, watching a video about an ancient nosejob
My sister got her nose broke in middle school, the nurse said her nose wasn't broken, and it healed wrong. She ended up with a deviated septum and needed minor surgery, but she hasn't been able to breathe properly through her nose for the past 20 or so years. She's finally getting it corrected in a few weeks.
As a South Asian and Middle Eastern woman I have only just now begun to like my nose. It actually fits my features well but when I smile it looks huge on my face. It also have a hump and when you see my side profile it’s very curved outward. You could say I’ve got a snozz… but it’s the snozz of my ancestors.
it's interesting how in the future they'll look back on our cosmetic procedures and wonder how we went through them, the same way we look back on these ones. then their procedures will be outdated one day too. i wonder what improvements humans will come up with in the future.
Genetic mutation instead of surgery
I would get cosmetic surgery to remove skin from losing weight…. only if i had an ample amount of pain medication tho… our ancestors were wild 😟
If you were around back then, you would have been considered beautiful and probably in a healthier society anyway
I love these old medical ones. Please, do anything and everything you can find on original surgeries
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What a fascinating history, it's unforgettable!
A really unique and very informative video! Thank you👍👍❤
I've always wanted to get my nose done ever since I fell on some ice as a kid and didn't realize I had broken it (it happened on a church field trip, and I hid it from the adults because I didn't want anyone to get in trouble). Aside from the monetary cost, I've also heard it was a really painful procedure to get.....which tbh has made me nervous to even think of getting it done haha. Idk if it counts, but I did manage to at least get lasik eye surgery (only because I won it in a raffle contest though lol it came with lifetime insurance on both eyes too) and it has legit been life-changing for me.
This guy needs to do some History Channel narrations. Way more fun to listen to then the geezers and cooks so far shown on History Channel
Very interesting and worthwhile video.
My husband had the perfect size and shaped nose, it stayed perfect even as he got older and I told him that a number of times ♥️
That's sweet
Fantastic video

Explains how Indian doctors thousands of years ago had these abilities, Western Observers on the "History" channel "So because we were still living in the bronze age, how did these, ehem, Indians have this technology...... Aliens"
This channel is so good for content, beats any TV channel hands down 🤘
@@Mk-wt7ip Absolutely, but like my comment says, this UA-cam channel tells the facts whereas the so called history channels on TVs are filled with stuff about how aliens helped, not that Indians were advanced, it's a real shame that the history is not portrayed as it should be in mainstream media.
@@JohnSmith-rw2yn Not the Europeans though really. British weren't really radical. If it were the Spanish or Portugese instead who could've colonised India, this would be for the most part true. Most of the heritage destruction was because of Islamic invasions. And calling any previous society advanced than today is just redundant.
@@gazibizi9504 Erm OK, nothing really to do with my original comment but OK?
@@Mk-wt7ip So how did Britishers robbed India of it was so advanced? India could've have easily destroyed British if it was most advanced civilization.
@@Mk-wt7ip if they were so advanced, why so bad at war?
In Hindi, 'naak katna' or 'cutting the nose' is an idiom which means 'to humiliate someone'.
The Code of Hammurabi was Babylonian, not Egyptian.
I don’t think he’ll ever run out of videos to make
Thank you
i’m just thinking about what if the kardashians lived 3000 years ago
I was just reading a bit about nose jobs after watching this vid and apparently some Pacific islands still practice cutting off the nose, ears or eyelids for some "crimes" like adultery 🙁
Arg, eyelids! Oh no....
I bet that keeps the 304s out the streets when giddy is at work.
@@gohawks3571 yeah it was the eyelids one that really got me too-cant imagine too many people survive it if not fixed by people like the Dr in what I read, infection will likely get them 🙁

"Follow your nose, where every it goes!"
"Keep your nose clean, and stay outta folks business",
"Don't be nosey"
"I smell a rat"...Thats all that got so far 🤭😁

Always interesting stuff on this channel!
If I had plastic surgery, it'd be to get rid of the bags under my eyes. They aren't from lack of sleep, although that can make them worse. They are genetic and just keep getting worse as I get older.
Too bad lower eyelid surgery only lasts a year
Same, I'm a racoon with or without my 8 hours sleep but I don't think I'll ever wanna remove them or anything
Same, I have had black circles under my eyes since childhood.
Everyone has bags and dark circles
I have bags too.
Thank you, that was awesome
this is horrifying....
Do a bit on Rockwall Texas please!!!!
can you do a video on Ivan the terrible? i think that would be a really interesting one!!
Not sure if its a video you would be interested in doing but I've always wondered about people getting heart burn in ancient times. Beer and wine go way back and I know from personal experience they can cause a good bit of heart burn, especially if you dont have a lot of food to go along with it.
How did ancient people treat heartburn? They had to have dealt with it before Prilosec was a thing.
Herbs
I’ve always wanted my nose fixed, along with a BUNCH of other stuff 😂 you don’t wanna get me started……
So... what did the Sphinx do to lose its nose?

Wait did he say the code of hammurabi an Egyptian law? Bruh it is a Babylonian law does this guy even does proper research?
Thank you! I had the same thought.
Thanks professor
A lot of Ancient Egyptian culture was derived from Babylon.
I just lent my friend $20,000 for plastic surgery
The problem is I don't know what he looks like now!
Okay. Okay
The Code of Hammurabi was Babylonian not Egyptian.
Holy cannoli so this where the "i stole your Nose"comes from

_You can pick your nose-_
*But you can't pick your friends' nose!!"*

This was something. Fascinating.
The phrase "cut off your nose to spite your face" takes on a literal meaning now.
Can you do the first BBL surgery?
I had sinus surgery… my coworkers at the time kept joking that I was taking time off work for a nose job (which was sort of true as repairing my deviated septum was part of the surgery)
I love how I get grossed out and sore from laughing in these videos!!
I think if I was going in for cosmetic surgery it would be a tummy tuck. And then...and then....lol.
Thanks for always educating me with fun!!
I didn’t need the visual of people grafting their arm skin to their noses….but here we are
EWWWWW
This is rather gruesome, but very interesting.
Pls do a video on Jim Morrison next.
Where’s the old music? This new track is distracting. Which is a shame because I enjoy hearing this guys voice.
Wtf that punishment must be so painful aggghhh
Could you make a video about the different languages in Guatemala?
Would like too hear about first open heart surgery
That was painful back then to get any type of surgery.
Make a video on eye surgery, contact lenses, and glasses.
Nobody is not taking my nose.
This is horrifying 😰
I can't wait to get a nose job. Since I was a teenager I would always have people saying I had an ugly nose. I'm 31 now and I finally can afford it
A video on Sushruta would be interesting 🤔
Fascinating 👃🏻
He forgot to say that they would take something like sand paper or a metal scrub pad and get the spot where the nose was missing raw and we'll make it a open wound so the flap of skin and nose would heal together into a new nose
Ancient civilisations were capable of doing complex cosmetic surgeries which includes dental implants and dental jewelry implants so I am not surprised that they could also do cosmetic surgeries such as nose jobs. My question would be rather how did they did with necrosis and other complications.
MJ and Voldemort just liked this video from the afterlife
The video is disturbing but human curiosity keeps watching.
Thank you so much for this information. Brutal. No thanks I'm good. Love ya. Philadelphia USA
First off I loooove these videos. and I don't wanna go off topic but those still shots with the woman nose sewed to her arm looks like scenes from a movie.....I would like to know the name of that movie please 😁
