IMO the biggest thing affecting season to season viewership of shows is we are getting shows at the frequency of movies now. 2 years being the new standard between seasons. For 8-10 episodes, that is just not enough to keep people engaged.

I have to say that Denver Jackson, the animator for the Most Boring Book Ever trailer, has also made an incredible looking animated fantasy feature film, called The World's Divide, ENTIRELY ON HIS OWN! It's supposed to be releasing some time soon and I really hope to see it covered here!

@@trystanthegypsy Yeah probably. I just found it totally bizarre, almost Orwellian, how he chose to read the Hugo apology word for word EXCEPT the Gaiman part which he skipped right over.
Daniel said The Red for Red October right? For all you kids out there it's _The Hunt for Red October_ - really good movie. One of the best movies of the 90's.
Re: Rings of Power - there was potential, but there was no room to course correct from season 1, which means the potential was always going to be squandered. To make matters worse they appear to be fully embracing the "seduction" angle in an attempt to snag the shippers. Is there some culture wars nonsense, yes, but there was similar with House of the Dragon & that went away quickly because it was still a quality show; RoP doesn't have that, it's just mid with lots to criticise.
Yeah, weird culture war edgelords will try to call anything "woke" if it has a hint of any non-white or non-straight people on it, but if the thing turns out to be incredibly good and well-loved they usually shut up. People tried to do the "go woke go broke" thing with spiderverse when it first came out, but you'd be hard pressed to hear anyone say that in 2024. But when something is in fact mediocre or bad for other reasons, the rage goes on, the culture war bullshit mixing in with genuine criticisms, and in the end weirdos will blame its failure on "politics" instead of any of the real writing problems. It's sad, but all you can really do is try to ignore them and focus only on real criticism and uplifting better art.
If it was actually a good show and didn't utterly "re-imagine" Tolkien's legendarium, I think the vast majority of people would have ignored the admittedly limited culture war crap shoehorned into it. But (and this is just from three episodes in S1 before I couldn't stand to watch it anymore) it's poorly written, poorly acted, and even setting aside the utter disregard for canon lore, I truly can't understand how anybody would enjoy this show beyond "oooh, pretty visuals and cool soundtrack".
Agreed, people keep blaming the culture war and 'review bombings' whenever a project fails, good projects don't fail because of that stuff, only bad ones do. It doesn't matter what the media the project is for either, look at the Joker movie, the wizard video game, or the HOTD tv series, all succeed despite getting dragged into the 'culture war.' Anyone who blames the culture war for their project failing rather than themselves is lying to themselves, good projects work, bad ones bomb, the end.
It’s not mid, it’s a great show that finally manages to portray Tolkien in a way that feel like his writings: slow and beautiful. There is a lot of love and care that has gone into the project and can be felt in every moment (although I guess not when you close your heart to it).
I agree, I think the culture wars bs would be gone after a week or two if the quality of the story was good enough. I do think that in this season a lot of the characters, scenes and plot which were bad and boring are an improvement but they still manage to lead the show in the same way a drunk person walks on the side walk, with every step forward they take two steps back. For example, Galadriel's character in the first 3 episodes was, imo, a great improvement in terms of writting but as soon as Elrond was named by Gil Galad as commander of an expedition, she just turned insuferable once more. On the other side, something that I think they did right was the dynamic between Sauron (Hallbrand/Annatar) and Celebrimbor. Dispite disliking the casting for Celebrimbor (nothing agains the actor, It's just that I would prefer another aproach when it comes to this character, something more inline with what they did in the Shadow of Mordor), they really surprised me by managing to do something interesting between them and their dialogue in the first 3 episodes. I would much prefer their story to be something closer to what was depicted in the Silmarillion and was previously adapted in the Shadow of Mordor flashbacks, but they still did a good job I guess. As for other plots, it's plainly clear that they lack direction or that they are currently side stories because we know what happens in the future. For example, the Istar plot is just completely lacking direction imo. They could be doing something with the Blue Wizards since we know very little about them except that they were in Rhûn, but at the same time I feel like they are waiting for the reaction of the audience to deide if the should reveal The Stranger to be Gandalf or not. On one hand they write his story to take place in the place where we know the Blue Wizards set foot, on the other they give him Gandalf's movie dialogue. They present another Istar on Rhûn which could mean that, if they are the Blue Wizards, one is bad and the other one is good and they'll have to face off eventualy, but at the same time they have them dress and look like Gandalf and Saruman. Then on top of that they have Tom Bombadil saying to the Stranger that his destiny is to fight both Fire and Sauron which could mean forshadowing for Gandalf fighting the Balrog and being a part of the fellowship. Also, now the Hobbits' ancestors now have a prophecy that one of them saw long ago which was to find a place they could dig a hole in the ground and live there whithin a week which is supposed to be the Shire. Yeah ok but why does everything need to be destined and why does it everything have to rely on previous knowledge? Besides the plot in Númenor also suffers in some way of the same problem. In both season 1 and this one, they have the Palantir in Númenor being such a bad and formbidden thing when in reallity the Palantíri were not initially inherently dangerous to use. It was only after the Minas Ithil Palantir was captured by Sauron, they were no longer used by Gondor's rulers, as users could be ensnared by the Dark Lord like we see through the trilogy. But just because we know them as bad things and being used for foul things, the writers decided to write them as forbidden and bad elven artifacts. They are currently relying on previous knowledge we have, of either the books or the movies, to adapt the source material. They should adapt the material as if they were adapting it for the first time so that both new fans and old ones, which only have knowledge that was conveyed in the movie, could get ore information about this world.
I really want to like Rings of Power but it's just not doing it for me... I mean, they had an interesting blue print in the Silmarillion. An anthology series of shorts that tell every story... but no... they had to wing it 🤦♂
Just going to go ahead and say here that on that video where you talked about the books coming out in the next year you left out my most anticipated book of the year by far and I mean far. Children of the navigator by tad Williams the final book in the Osten ard series
I was thinking the same thing last week or the week before and went back to see if I had just missed Daniel's coverage of the whole issue... but... no?
I believe in past videos he’s alluded to the fact that he’s consulted a lawyer to go over what he can discuss while avoiding being sued by Gaiman’s team, and that he’s pretty limited rn. Daniel is a big name in UA-cam but that’s still small peanuts to someone like Gaiman. Also, the subject matter regarding Gaiman is incredibly triggering and hard to read, and it might be difficult for Daniel to cover without hurting himself, especially based on how he’s talked about such themes when they showed up in fiction in the past.
@@FrostytheAwesome Still, avoiding reading his name when quoting someone else's apology is going a bit far, and certainly would not be about legal trouble. Kind of feels like his personal distaste keeps him from speaking his name when it's connected to someone else goodwill, but that's a guess.
@@MagusMarquillin Let's just face it. Gaimen has the right politics, so Daniel will do anything to protect him even though he's at best a creep and probably a rapist. Daniel has no problem crapping on JK every chance he gets, like this video, and she hasn't raped anyone. Maybe Daniel just likes picking on women like Gaimen.
Rings of Power: I'd call it an extremely expensive fanfic written by someone who never read any of the books, didn't see the movies, and only had the story described to them by a drunk. It's very pretty, but it's not Tolkien, and most of it doesn't even make sense as a story.
League of Legends Worlds, their Esports championship series, is at the end of the month and finishes on Nov 2. I've seen some suggesting Arcane will premier on Nov 3rd which is the Sunday right after their event finishes. Makes a lot of sense to me but I can't confirm it. Alternatively it could come out a few days later on the 7th if it wants to hit S1''s third anniversary. BES was a lot of fun and very well animated but I think Reign was more deserving of the win personally.
I accepted the Hugo Award for Adrian Tchaikovsky in Chengdu, China (for Best Series). Having actually been to WorldCon China, and seen the efforts that the Chinese con organisers and publishers went to (and the ensuing fallout towards them), a massive apology is also owed to them, to the Chinese fans, and everyone involved in Chengdu. They worked their arses off to invite us all to an amazing convention, only to have a bunch of North Americans come to their country with big clown shoes and trod all over them. And as a result, fandom may never want to have another WorldCon in China. Which makes me absolutely gutted for them. An apology is good. But it doesn't even begin to mitigate the astronomical level of damage done to the Chinesr organisers.
The state not the city!! So many times I have had to clarify that to people. (Moved to AZ at 9 from western NY (Chautauqua County area. Fun word to make people spell.)) The legend of James Earl Jones will be forever. Sandlot in particular holds a special place in my heart. Blue Eye Samurai was a visual delight.
The void needs a dark non-euclidean, inconceivable hole. While observed the whole causes madness and a slight feeling of hanging in the air at the top of a jump but is also completely safe under normal digital photography. That or a plant.
Agghhhhhh!!!! Idk where else to talk about this, as daniel is the biggest WOT fan i watch. I just need to gush about the interaction between perrin and simion in book three. Im almost in tears!
@@DanielGreeneReviews you're welcome! Love your work as always, and as much as I miss the weekly RoP vids, I'll still look forward to your retrospective.
I wasn't asking for an episode by episode for Rings of Power as I didn't think that was what you were doing anymore, but I was waiting for the full review when that happened. Personally I have been loving S2. I enjoyed S1 but had lots of issues with it, but S2 is really a step up.
Eh, as someone who didn't really have a choice but to play games alone (and do everything else alone), I've come to really enjoy playing some games with my friends or partner (granted they're not MMOs though). If anything I'd like to see more couch co-op options in the future. Also, you can technically play Elden Ring (and most other soulsborne games) with friends. ;) Also, honestly, wise decision on not reacting to RoP episode by episode; it's fun to watch others do silly reviews of it, but for myself I can't be arsed either. I did it with season 1, and whilst I don't regret doing so, it was absolutely exhausting... hell I don't even know if I'll watch the rest of season 2 (and do a video about it), it's so bad and boring for me. 😅
RavensDagger is very good. I've read their fanfiction more than their original work, but there's nothing cozier than Cinnamon Bun (though sometimes it is a bit too cozy, I'll admit)
"I just hope they don't find a way to inject the same micro transaction....". Sad to say that ship sailed long ago, look up Middle Earth Shadow of... series.
It’s probably better to do single players with multiplayer stuff but single player games was why the game industry exploded with popularity and quality and the youngsters play the online gaming whilst most gamers like myself are getting on in age and prefer playing single players as the main game and multiplayers rarely. Especially when work I don’t want to grind in a stupid live service game that just reminds me of a chore or working. I want escapism not more work.
I see Cyberpunk 2077 The Board Game getting a lot of press, but last years Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City, which has some very similar elements but looks like different gameplay, I didn't hear much about it. Why not?
Because it doesn't share a name with the very well-known video game from 4 years ago, like 2077 does. Is the TT game better? Probably (I've never played it). Is part of being "well known" based on how buggy the video game was at launch? Absolutely! But they are trading on name recognition here, not necessarily quality.
@@mathsalot8099 The board game I'm referring to is called "Cyberpunk 2077 Gangs of Night City" and has all the main characters, and dozens of side characters, from the video game. All the gangs are from Cyberpunk 2077. I just shortened the name so I had less typing.
Bob's Burgers isn't the same kind of show as Scavengers Reign or Blue Eye Samurai, but it's a great show. One of my favorites and I don't think it deserved to be dismissed in the same breath as season infinity of the Simpsons. Feel like it caught a stray here :(
I don't think you mentioned the Will of the Many sequel either (Strength of the Few)! No release date yet but he's said on his website that he would expect sometime in 2025 if it follows the timeline of his past releases based on when he turned it over for editing
I stopped watching Rings of Power, but it had nothing to do with any culture war. I watched all of season one, and kept waiting for it to improve, and it just kept getting worse. It is poorly written in the extreme. By the end of season one, I resented that I had wasted so much time watching the show. Not because of any cultural issues; it's just badly written, period. There was no way I was going back.
Daniel i don't know if you have said something about this but i would really like to see the breakdowns in 2025 the sun eater series finishes and they say red rising will also end next year so it would be a great time to bring it back
Now with Abercrombie coming next on between two perns(yay), I say this as kinda my selfish request 😅 It's only missing three of my fav fantasy authors. Would you be able to get Brian Staveley, Naomi Novik and Django Wexler on the show?? I need my bingo Daniel pleasee!

Is Daniel not allowed to say the words "Neil Gaiman" on his channel?
I noticed that too.... I'm not sure if he's commented on that whole thing... thats a dark kettle of fish to open, he made quite a few comments about "allegedly" and "in my opinion" lately, so maybe he's not touching that with a 10 foot pole right now??
@@trystanthegypsy Yeah probably. I just found it totally bizarre, almost Orwellian, how he chose to read the Hugo apology word for word EXCEPT the Gaiman part which he skipped right over.
He said he doesn’t want to cover it because of its sensitive nature
Daniel said The Red for Red October right?
For all you kids out there it's _The Hunt for Red October_ - really good movie. One of the best movies of the 90's.
AGREED! Admittedly, I even loved the book, but I recommend that movie to ny college history students who were all born after the end of the Cold War.
It doesn't matter what the media the project is for either, look at the Joker movie, the wizard video game, or the HOTD tv series, all succeed despite getting dragged into the 'culture war.'
Anyone who blames the culture war for their project failing rather than themselves is lying to themselves, good projects work, bad ones bomb, the end.
The editing in this video was especially fire! I found myself chuckling at more than one of the quick editing gags, 10/10
Sanderson and Kibuishi?! That’s already too awesome! Kibuishi did the Amulet series, among other things, and his art (and storytelling) is fantastic!
I really want to like Rings of Power but it's just not doing it for me...
I mean, they had an interesting blue print in the Silmarillion. An anthology series of shorts that tell every story... but no... they had to wing it 🤦♂
They weren’t legally allowed to use any stories from the first age which is a real shame.
Haha "The State Not The City" said like a true New Yorker
Just going to go ahead and say here that on that video where you talked about the books coming out in the next year you left out my most anticipated book of the year by far and I mean far. Children of the navigator by tad Williams the final book in the Osten ard series
Literally avoiding Neil Gaiman as hard as possible.
I was thinking the same thing last week or the week before and went back to see if I had just missed Daniel's coverage of the whole issue... but... no?
@@noahjohnson8975 He has mentioned that he doesn't feel comfortable covering those news.
Ah yes Min Min Troll by Trove Jason
My favorite books
Seeing Daniel showering was not on my TBR. But hey, not complaining 😂
Wow I love Keeps. Keeps please pay Daniel lots of money for more ads, thank you.
The Void needs a bookshelf to roast.
Love from a TotallyNotMark and Vaush fan!
I tried with rings of power. It’s just not for me.
Rings of Power:
I'd call it an extremely expensive fanfic written by someone who never read any of the books, didn't see the movies, and only had the story described to them by a drunk.
I thought it was reported from Amazon directly that the viewership for Rings of Power has actually been exceeding expectations?
Fun word to make people spell.))
The legend of James Earl Jones will be forever.
Woo hoo! I will now have 2 Folio Society books. Rise and Reign of the Mammals to go with Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. 🎉
What we really need is more story-driven co-op games. Play alone, play with your friends, everybody's happy.
Agghhhhhh!!!! Idk where else to talk about this, as daniel is the biggest WOT fan i watch. I just need to gush about the interaction between perrin and simion in book three. Im almost in tears!
Regarding RoP: Samba doesn't include mobile usage, which is insane bc how many people only watch shows casting from mobile or on their laptop?z
Wow! I didn’t know that. Thank you for letting me know.
Also, you can technically play Elden Ring (and most other soulsborne games) with friends. ;)
Also, honestly, wise decision on not reacting to RoP episode by episode; it's fun to watch others do silly reviews of it, but for myself I can't be arsed either. I did it with season 1, and whilst I don't regret doing so, it was absolutely exhausting... hell I don't even know if I'll watch the rest of season 2 (and do a video about it), it's so bad and boring for me. 😅
I am looooonging for you to review Interview with the Vampire from AMC. Absolute premium character and story writing. The series needs more viewers!
11:47 the best short fiction I have ever read ;)
My favorite werewolf movies are Bad Moon and Dog Soldiers.. SO GOOD!
RavensDagger is very good. I've read their fanfiction more than their original work, but there's nothing cozier than Cinnamon Bun (though sometimes it is a bit too cozy, I'll admit)
I think it's gonna be really funny for them to try and justify why Vi would stay an enforcer given now that we have the full unfiltered backstory
Nooo Daniel, do not tell me about special editions 😩😩
I like your voice impressions, also I like your redlettermedia comments 🤔
@@davedujour1 ah! Thanks for clarifying! Like I said, I haven't played them... though now I'll have to look them up!
Bob's Burgers isn't the same kind of show as Scavengers Reign or Blue Eye Samurai, but it's a great show. One of my favorites and I don't think it deserved to be dismissed in the same breath as season infinity of the Simpsons. Feel like it caught a stray here :(
still forgot Inkworld by Cornelia Funke, despite the fact that it comes out on September 23rd
lmao just completely skipped over Gaiman in the Hugo apology
I don't think you mentioned the Will of the Many sequel either (Strength of the Few)! No release date yet but he's said on his website that he would expect sometime in 2025 if it follows the timeline of his past releases based on when he turned it over for editing
“making werewolves more terrifying than sexy” who said we can’t have both?
6:16 - Just 6 months... Thanks the lord not a year
40 mil global viewership for RoP. They saw this video and posted on insta.
Much more of an international audience clearly.
Fantasy News! Tuesday @ 9AM EST is the best time of the week!
Lol, I've never heard Tove Jansson's name more mispronounced in my life. 😅
Daniel i don't know if you have said something about this but i would really like to see the breakdowns in 2025 the sun eater series finishes and they say red rising will also end next year so it would be a great time to bring it back
Red God Possibly sounds like a fun title
I was hoping Rings of Power would have gotten better ratings . I actually enjoyed season 2 a lot more than season 1.
"we use bad words here" lol
Gamelit/litrpg recommendation:
Challenger's Call series by Nathan A Thompson. Interstellar war with Arthurian legend in a medieval setting with a game interface overlay.
