Angam techniques were used by the locals in their resistance against the early colonial occupants of the island's coastal areas.[18] The British, who occupied the whole island by 1815[19] (and who had full control of it by 1818[20]) issued a gazette banning the practice in 1817 with harsh punishments for flouters, paving the way to its decline.[13] The gazette was issued by Sir Robert Brownrigg, "figuring that a populace trained in hand-to-hand combat would be more difficult to control."[21] The martial art re-surfaced from an area known as Beligal Korale, around Kegalle, subsequent to the end of British colonial rule in 1948.[1] The Jathika Hela Angam Shilpa Kala Sangamaya, the highest governing body of the art today, was established in 2001.[13] Sri Lanka's Ministry of Culture and the Arts has also taken action to support the survival and preservation of angampora:[8] Source:wikipedia

Practice thrived during Sri Lanka's medieval period when Bhuvanekabahu VI of Kotte's successful campaign to conquer the Jaffna Kingdom included fighters who excelled in this art.[13] Descendants of a heroine named Menike or Disapathiniya who lived around this time is credited with the art form's survival in the ensuing centuries: dressed in male attire, she is said to have defeated the killer of her father in a fight inside a deep pit known as ura linda (pig's pit), during a historic fight.[1][14] Angampora fighters also fought alongside the army of Mayadunne of Sitawaka in the 1562 Battle of Mulleriyawa.[15] Tikiri Banda aka Rajasinha I of Sitawaka, who succeeded Mayadunne, became a faithful sponsor of this art.[12] Sources-wikipedia

5000 years old martial arts?? wow thats crazy
King Rawana buildup,
Ancient boasting.. 😅
Go refer traditional dancing styles in Sri Lanka, you will find fluid martial forms, with weapons and supporting instruments (drums etc). Now that's what we call real ancient art.

At the end nothing beats a machine gun
at first sight, i thought it was Kalaripayattu...
This style was practiced by Maha Ravana of Lanka, this style and kalaripayittu may have some similarity because Ravana had several south indian areas under his control
Why does it look similar to kalaripayttu an ancient martial art from kerala ( south indian state ) banned by the brits back then!!!
It's like kalari but little slower
this is pretty cool
yeah...but this is similar to Indian ancient martial arts....
Sri Lankans crisis into first phase: panicking
Sri Lankans crisis into second phase: hysterically dance in ancient form
We were not panicking though and this is not a funny thing ...
As a sri Lankan I think we should revive our old ways and be self- sufficient
Stop being disrespectful
Is this somehow related to Kalaripayattu, a Martial Art from Kerala?
Angampora, a Tamil martial art, came to Sri Lanka during the Kandy period The Sinhalese of Sri Lanka have a unique martial art called" Hela Hatan"
පර සුද්දා අපිට නැති නොකලේ මොනවද
Looks like an offshoot of South Indian Kalari Payat??
Looks almost identical to indian kalaripayattu
It's ancient Tamil art. Tamilagam in the ancient times were same till Srilanka
Weak and slow would get destroyed by every martial art
@@cheekyavocado1457 exactly, any obese American or European could beat it lol. You can't even find the guts to fight Russia and China😂keep your comments to yourself
@@tamizhaninkorea But Ceylon never had been part of "Tamilakam",...
Even writhings from Sangam era never included Sri Lanka in the Tamil realm. Tamilakam is from Tirumala Hills to Cap Comorin (Kanyakumari).

Real Doctor strange vibes right here
Wow, incredible! It's shockingly similar to brazilian Capoeira.
But...what can it protect from nukes?
People call that dancing
So you're telling me if someone was practicing this in 2021 they would have been shot in the knee? I find that doubtful. Why didn't they start it earlier?
Looks a lot like kalari
Love this.
Just as the Queen passed away.
Dont completely understand the point to martial arts that only work on people that will use the same exact martial arts.
It is kinda Similar to Kalaripayattu
Sad how long it was banned
I'm happy for the Sri Lanka brothers and sisters, reviving this part of your culture is amazing! but this martial art looks theatrical. Based on this video alone, I see it lacks the practicality and there's too much movement involved. I hope I'm wrong.
Now revive the economy..
Spells?!
Will Hope This Traditional Games Become a Nation Sports 👍 🇱🇰
