Amazing video mate, unfortunately my airbag light went off today and all the faults you mentioned such as the steering wheel controls etc aren't working like yours so it looks like an easy fix.
Ah that's unfortunate for u mate, but yeah hopefully that will be a straightforward fix for you. Just double check ur slip ring part number so u get the same one as there's a few variations. Hopefully it's a good afterwards 🤞🏻👍🏻
Great video! I’m looking at replacing the indicator stalk similar process I’m guessing? Do I just remove the top centre switch so the prior to removing the steering wheel please?
I’ve got a similar issue with my leon copa. Air bag light on. No horn, no steering controls but my cruise still works. I’ve just bought a clock spring after watching this video I’ll be giving it a go and will update with the results
Hope it sorts it, does sound like it's the issue. If you have any problems after installation, it's worth having someone check the 'long coding' shown at the end of the video, to make sure it's showing the correct values. Best of luck 🤞🏻
I did dismantle it, but I never filmed it for a video as I couldn't actually see anything obvious that was wrong with it sadly. It looked ok, but there was a lot of small electronics that could have failed and would be extremely hard to spot. Sorry bout this
Hi. Good video. My 66 Ibiza has just done this. How did you get the part number may I ask? I think I can fix this myself but worried about buying the wrong part and also concerned about going through the fix and then needing coding.😬
I had to remove the airbag and steering wheel to read the part number on the clock spring annoyingly 😬 but yeah it's best to make sure you get the correct one. As for coding, yeah it's very hit and miss whether you'll need to do it afterwards. Maybe check to see if any nearby garages can offer this service for you, just in case it's required.
Thanks for watching, If anyone has had this problem but it hasn't been the slip ring, drop a comment below to say what the issue was and if it was an easy fix, cheers!👍🏻

Would I be able to retrofit this into my 6j that has no buttons on the wheel and get the buttons to work if so what would I need please? Thanks a lot for your help!
I'm not 100% sure, but I think a lot of work is involved. I've read on Facebook forums, owners asking to fit steering wheel controls to a car that never had them and I think you'll need the slip ring (my one was nearly £200) you'll need the wheel with controls, a canbus control module then a software specialist to code in the new hardware so it all works together. If money is no issue, then yes it's possible. facebook.com/vwretrofit/ On Facebook are known to do this stuff 👍🏻
@@NorthCoastWorkshopCiao mi si è rotto il blocca sterzo sulla mia Leon non gira più la chiave di accensione un lavoraccio da fare tante hanno quel difetto pure le Golf 😅
Hello my friend, i want to replace the clock spring but i was quoted for £400 for the clock spring and labour this is alot of money for a car that i bought for £2000. im from birmingham uk, did u use a genuine part or a non genuine and would i be able to solve the issue by changing the whole steering wheel?
The steering wheel won't include the clock spring I'm afraid, the clock spring is separate to it. That is an expensive quote. My one was 170 and I believe it was genuine. My one was from a Spanish seller on eBay. My advice would be to try an get your steering wheel off, check the part number on your clock spring, then Google the part number to see what's available and from where. Changing it over isn't to bad a job as you'll see on the video
@@NorthCoastWorkshop i dont have the tools unfortunately to carry out the work myself + im not very handy with these kind of things and im currently using the car for work so i cant afford to take of the steering wheel, the car i have is a Seat Leon 2012 1.6 ecomotive the steering controls dont work and the airbag light is on. Is there any other method of obtaining the part number? Do you know anyone from around where i live that could carry this work out for me im based in birmingham but im willing to travel
There's a few different variations of clock spring, so it's sometimes advised to check the original. I'm afraid I'm not familiar at all of the Birmingham area, but if your not already a member of the MK2 Leon owners group on Facebook, I recommend joining it and they are very helpful, someone might offer to do it for you also. I'd do it but I'm 9 hours north 🙈 best of luck 🤞🏻
I’ve just tried to replace that part with a similar number one but different letter at the end, well… its working but i can change between pages in the screen so… I am stuck at the phone page. The original part number is 5K0 953 569 B and was replaced with 5K0 953 569 AE.
There are a lot of variations of that part I'm afraid, and it is best to replace it with the same part number. I neat bought one that was £35, just one letter different, but turned out I had to get the exact one for £170, which worked perfectly. If your having issues, best to try and get the exact one as before.
I don't think the clock spring is to do with the ignition so maybe a wire for the ignition was disturbed during the process. Sometimes the clock spring does require coding yes
It could be the micro switches behind the next and previous music buttons are faulty, but it's hard to check unless you have a 2nd hand steering wheel to try on the car, and check if it works properly. But I'd check that they definitely don't work for any other functions like changing radio stations as I sometimes get an issue like this, but it's just the head unit system not communicating with the steering wheel for a moment. Once I restart the car it's working again as it should.
If you change the clock spring do you have to code anything after or does it it work straight away I’ve got the same car your working on with same faults. Thanks in advance
Hi Christina, yes sometimes you do so if u have diagnostic tools you can get a hold of, or a capable garage nearby tha has some. I left the coding bit at the end of the video for reference in case there was any issue, and the settings could be copied across 👍🏻
Hey Michael. To be honest I'm not too sure. The horn on mine is playing up too (video to be made soon for the replacement) but for just now there's 2 options - 1. Get a multimeter and push the probes into the wire connections u can see, and see if u get a 12volt reading at all on one of them when pushing the horn or 2. Get a cheap 10 quid horn off eBay and swap it for the original. The original ones are open to the elements, esp water, so they get battered and die over the years. Hope that helps 👍🏻
@@NorthCoastWorkshop thanks for the reply. I’ve tested the unit itself and it works so I might just have to run my own wires off it to a switch. I replaced the ignition as it broke and the horns not working since so somewhere around that I must have broken the circuit. There aren’t many wires there just ignition ones and the horn is in there too going onto the horn contact ring above that module. Thanks for the advice
No probs Michael, let me know how it goes. Any tips or findings you have may help someone else in the future, so it's always good to share everyone's problem solving 👌🏻
You'll need to check the part number frkm your original slip ring as there are some variations. I just typed mine into Google and shopped around for the best deal for a new unit. (eBay was my best price) Hope that helps
I'm not too sure I'm afraid. I've seen it been done, and it looks awesome, but there's probably a lot of other things to do like swapping over certain wires and having the ECU programmed to accept the new wheel. Definitely possible but a lot of work and specialist help.
I don’t everything in the video but my horn now works but my cruise control doesn’t and I still have an airbag light on, when I turn the engine off it turns off but then turns back on again
It sounds like you might have a more serious electrical issue if the car is turning back on again. Something relating to the ignition system, as the clock spring doesn't have anything ignition related inside it I'm afraid. An auto electrician will be able to find what's causing the issue. If you have the old clock spring, keep it just in case the replacement you got was faulty and that's why the cruise control isn't working. Also double check the old and new clock spring part numbers match exactly as there are loads of different versions available 👍🏻

Yes, I believe the clock spring once out the way, should allow you to then remove the indicator stalk.

Yeah, that's the air bag multi plug, if you carefully remove that to get the airbag out the way, then the steering wheel can slide off 👍🏻

Do you have to reprogram the steering wheel angle/sensors or just erasing the faults that are active ?
As long as you've not spun the wheel or messed with anything while it's apart, the steering angle sensor should need nothing done to it.
