This was one of my favorite shows as a kid after school or at the butt-crack-of-dawn when Nick-at-Night turned back to regular Nickelodeon. Good memories from randomly coming upon this clip.
This is why Mr. Wizard was one of the best shows on Nickelodeon in the 80's!

I grew up in the midwest of the USA and the only shows I ever saw were the color ones on Nickelodeon (but I have seen some of the B&W ones on UA-cam).
I remember this from when I was a kid! Mr. Wizard was the best! I am so excited to share this and more with my kids!

After seeing this episode when it first aired I did this trick so many times that my mother had to hide her sewing kits.

I learned this trick from Shari Lewis's TV special "You Can Do It." The method she used was without thread. You need a long needle, and you stick the needle into the skin, until it touches the inside of the skin on the other side. Then you sweep the needle back and forth, cutting the banana with the needle itself. Then repeat for the other slices. You can't do a lengthwise slice that way, though. 🍌

I tried this as a kid. I couldn't get it to work. Mr Wizard would have been disappointed.
What happened? You only got one big slice at the bottom?
Same! But now I’m anxious to try it again as an adult to see if I can get it to work now!
This is one of the few segments that I can remember.
I remember getting to watch Mr. Wizard as a kid and dreamed of being able to have the resources to emulate the experiments and demonstrations that he did. And now it makes me sad, thinking that I was too poor to have bananas or sewing needles.
My dad showed this to me, and so when I was probably 11 I did this to a bunch of bananas before school to prank my mates at lunch. That was 4 hours later, so the holes were all black, and they got squished in my lunch box, so there was banana gunk oozing out of the little holes. No one wanted to eat them. It was sad.
He paid for the bananas. He can serve them to you however he wants.
Mr. Wizard: "Hey kid, I had 56 bombing runs as a B-24 pilot from Italy with the 767th Bomb Squadron, 461st Bomb Group of the Fifteenth Air Force during WW II!"
Kid: "WTF?"
Mr. Wizard: "Do you like bananas?"
This brought me back to my childhood! Thank you UA-cam!

You can do this with just the needle and one hole per slice, moving it back and forth to make the cut.

He could have suggested staggering the entry/exit hole locations to appear more randomized so his trickery would remain a mystery... Mr. Wizard critiqued his technique just like one of my vet school surgery instructors! Lol!
