"Ahh, dear little Mergo. Where have you gone? Are you hiding from me? Come out, come out, don't be afraid. You were born a child of Great Ones, what could you possibly fear? Now, now, show yourself, Mergo. My dear, little Mergo."

@@comicknight5926I mean your point still has validity. Laurence tried finding another child of a Great One. Mensis was somewhat associated with Laurence.

I feel some players might "miss" the baby carriage first time around, so having a very motherly intro would've stressed the situation nice.... But it does look a bit too much those early outtakes. So neat being able to see how a scene idea progress!
The fifth revision is so wild. The early ones with her cradling Mergo show an undeniable tenderness and care, but that last one? That looked so... well, inhuman. As if the Wet Nurse was only an animal spotting a threat and immediately going feral to protect the young out of instinct. Maybe that's why they went for this one, although with some fixes to make her fall more ethereal and graceful; the others were too... relatable to a human perspective, I think, and the Great Ones tend to be everything but that.
Well, the Great Ones have some sort of empathy for Humans, they like to interact, like the Brian of Mensis or even The Moon Presence itself. But I see what you mean by "too human" to be the final product. As for the Slam Dunk, i think it's kinda interesting, reminds me of When Oceiros slams Ocellote into the ground and goes mad. Bloodborne had a lot of things that were moved on to DS3, so maybe they decided that this whole baby-hurting thing would be moved on and that Mergo would be an actual Wet-nurse.
@@Kmi_Sama Hmm, I wouldn't say the Great Ones have "empathy" for the humans - that would imply they somehow can put themselves on our proverbial shoes and come to some sort of understanding of our thoughts and feelings, which doesn't seem to be the case here (at least for me). If anything, they seem to have "sympathy", although their ways to show it may come across in a badly executed way; like, blessing a woman's womb with a Great One's child when the Blood Moon rises could, in a way, be seen as an act of good faith - I myself hardly think that they do it out of malice - but think of Arianna, and how she looks everything but blessed after giving birth to... that thing. So yeah, I do see them as sympathetic, but they seem to lack the empathy to actually get us, you know, so their actions tend to bring more harm then good regardless of benign intentions. And oh god, YES, the fifth revision reminded me so much of Oceiros' fight - what it would have been, at least. Two bosses who took upon the task of protecting a child from harm, but ended up being the reason said child got harmed anyway. Lesson of the day: don't be a child on a Soulsborne universe
also the fact that she's performing the motions of picking up and cradling a baby that has no physical form is just kind of silly for what can be the final boss of the game.
@@Hennichell It's been a while since I've read up on Bloodborne lore, but I wanna say the reason the Great Ones endow the wombs of mortals with their children is because the Great One's themselves cannot have children on their own, but yet they want to (for an unexplained reason), so they must find surrogates to do so. Whether their reason for wanting children is to exert power/have better influence over mortals with a conduit that is on the mortal plane, or due to them possessing feelings and emotions that humans could understand, like loneliness or wishing to share their gifts with others; all we really know is they can't do it by themselves.
It's funny you say that cause for me every old one in the game in some way or small detail IDK just to me felt as if they were attempting to BE human in some aspect?? The acts of presenting children, caretaking, dreaming, teaching etc etc it just idk felt to me like these unreal beings have over time because of curiosity or sympathy made strides to interact with the people of this world in order to see what being more human is like??
Personally I still really like the theory that the Wet Nurse is "created" by Mergo instead of being a separate entity. More like a manifestation of Mergo's need for a mother instead of a creature. The idea of it not being it's own entity is also supported by how you don't get any echoes or message from defeating it, those only show up after Mergo stops crying and "dies".
@@wildman7220 Then state why he's wrong and it's so complex? Making a statement the way you just did rather than explaining it to him, just makes you seem a bit of an elitist dick, sorry not sorry. 😂
Personally, I'm partial to the interpretation that the Wet Nurse IS real, but that she may be severely de-powered when we encounter her: The statue in the Grand Cathedral depicts a winged, headless woman in robes pouring a liquid down upon the altar and effigies below. This could be a representation of the Wet Nurse, and her giving her blood away to the Healing Church, thus explaining why the Wet Nurse herself does not bleed... (Some people argue that she doesn't bleed because she's an illusion, but the closest precedent we have to that is Rom's spawn, and they do bleed contrary to the Wet Nurse.) Also, you're probably aware of the fact that Bloodborne borrows a lot from Shintoism and Buddhism, right? Well, having analysed Bloodborne as well as I can with that in mind, I've arrived at the conclusion that the Moon Presence and the Wet Nurse (along with Mergo) are probably counterparts to each-other. To be more specific, the Moon Presence is Bloodborne's version of the goddess of death in Shintoism, Izanami, while the Wet Nurse is Bloodborne's version of the goddess of mercy in Buddhism, Thousand-armed Kannon/Avalokiteśvara (who is also, along with Amida Buddha/Amitaabha and Seishi/Mahaasthaamapraapta, a part of the Welcoming Approach -- a trinity of deities that welcome the dying into the Pure Land/Paradise, thus making her a kind-of goddess of death as well). Kannon was said to have grown her thousand arms in order to help everyone and this could metaphorically be thought of as the Wet Nurse giving away her blood, so that she may "be there" for every person who has taken her blood into their being.
One pattern I noticed is that true Great Ones from the nightmare never fight you in person. They are always "X of Y": The Wet Nurse of Mergo. The Orphan Of Kos. The Presence of the Moon. My theory is that they all lack a physical form, so they either use a host (Maria, Gherman, Micolash) as a proxy or create a new body meant to represent and protect them based on their mental and emotional state, so it takes both the form of the thing they want to be or just desire, twisted by what they consider "threatening". Mergo created the wet nurse because he was taken away from Yharnam. he wanted his mother to protect him so his need created a surrogate, a wet nurse to take care of him, whose form is based on the Shadow Of Yharnam, pthumeru royal guards who to a child like Mergo would seem the strongest warriors ready to die for him, lacking a visible body because of Mergo's lack of a maternal figure. The Orphan I think is born from Kos' grief on losing her child before his ascension (mother is dead, her baby taken), so it takes the shape of a withered fetus, stuck forever in this unfinished form and without any chance to be "born", mixed with Gherman or a hunter, who to her eyes is the perfect killing machine. the Moon's presence I have no clue. it looks like an overgrown screaming messanger, twisted, gutted, and blackened by rot into a bestial form. I guess it's meant to represent an eternal servant and aid, who would help the hunter to the point of rotting away, while assuming the shape of a beast, the hunter's true enemy.
I really like how out of all non-sekiro souls protagonists, the hunter is probably the least imposing/more clueless in most cutscenes, i genuinely like it
@@mausebas Honestly, that's part of why they're my favorite of the protags cause that cluelessness is, aside from just being full of personality, is also just super charming Also cause it's really funny given that they're casually wiping out Eldritch Gods and abominations beyond human comprehension right here
I love how the moon peeks just over the edge of the arena. It's as if the Moon Presence is watching you fight the nurse. I've also noticed that the moon shifts positions and size as you ascend through the tower. Maybe I'm just rambling and maybe it's just an inconsequential environmental detail, but to me it looks like the MP is watching you every step of the way. Edit: 1 year later rewatching this video I realize the moon in the beginning is blocking the view of the mountains on the horizon... it's not in the sky, it's literally an object floating mid-air. It's not even in scale with anything else in the environment. Don't know why but that creeps me out so much.
This actually too appears in the over world of Bloodborne. During the blood moon, you can see it hover over the sky, not above the clouds, but below it.
I think that's just a game physics engine thing they didn't think too much about. I think you're supposed to not see that. Granted, throughout the game, the "Sun" (might just be the moon) and the Moon are frequently seen to be ahead of the background that's full of clouds and smoke and stuff, but that could just be artistic direction? IDK actually.
If you look at the art book, the moon actually does end up looking like an eye, or pupil (in the Japanese version, eye is often 瞳, which is pupil). This is most apparent in the art for the Hunter's Dream, where the moon makes a pupil and the background makes an eye shape (👁🗨 this icon basically).
Not gonna lie, I sorta prefer the original versions. It does present Mergo’s Wet Nurse more as a caring figure, or at least conveys their job better. In the final product, if not for their name, I’d assume the Wet Nurse ate Mergo!
I never assumed the Wet Nurse was eating the baby. And while the older cutscene is sweeter, I like the way It appears more in the new version (which was at least improved from the 5th iteration)
That last one made me lol. It was like a drunk person falling out of the sky. I can just imagine her getting up and saying "oh shit, I think I just crushed the baby".
Not really. The beads hanging on it kinda make it reminiscence of a dreamcatcher. It's clearly some kind of amulett made of solid metal. A dreamcatcher always has a string pattern in the center, kinda like a spiderweb.
I wish they'd have developed more the first version. The gentle way the wet nurse held mergo and her agressiveness towards the hunter were so powerful and gave more personality to the great ones. It made their duality as affectionate and violent beings towards humanity more explicit.
i think they changed it specifically cuz it gave them too much personality. the first cutscene makes the wet nurse almost seem human, but the whole idea with the great ones is that we can't comprehend their thoughts or intentions
Mergo's a special "child of blood"; an eternally gestating fetus, ripped from their mother's womb just prior to birth. Mergo both requires and produces blood eternally as it did naturally, prior to it's untimely excision. Since Mergo is removed from Queen Yarnham, a wet-nurse is needed to supply the blood (not milk in this instance) Mergo requires to produce more for the nightmare... sadly Mergo's source is cursed with beasthood. If you look closely, most portions of the wet-nurse's outfit are designed to dazzle the observer, but cut the wearer making them bleed profusely. Many of the wet-nurse's arms are wrapped tightly in ornamental jewelry acting as tourniquets to control the Mergo's "feeding" process and even her blades curve/cut inwardly which implies their genuine use; to keep fresh twisted beastblood poisoning Mergo... the waking world... and you.
It’s worth noting that the moon presence also takes the hunter into their chest, much like mergo and the wet nurse, in one of the endings. I wonder what that symbolizes
@@lucipharis "all the great ones lost their children and seek for a surrogate" kinda gives the vague idea of they all being mothers, but even that can be debated.
How is there still so much awesome stuff hidden in this game even after all this time? 3 years ago it was entire enemies and storylines. 3 months ago it was entire scrapped map layouts and NPCs. Just yesterday I watched a video restoring scrapped voicelines into their proper order. Now today I'm being shown an entire cutscene's lifecycle! This game's code itself has more layers than even the mind-bending lore it was supposed to convey.
I know a bit of game creation, so there is a possible explanation why this could've been previously missed for the 5 years the game's been out. Bloodborne's files have rather recently been put under such a focused lens, so, the explanation could be that; Some of the cut dialogs don't have attached subtitle files. Meaning theres no immediate line of code saying something along the lines of "If Audio File X plays, display X subtitles at X,Y,Z coordinates, changing if displayed at X resolution, and change to section 2 at X interval, etc." To put this in less computer talk- theres no line to follow "Marvelous! A Hunter is a Hunter even within a dream!" and change when Micolash turns to the next part of his sentence, being "But not so fast..." So if you didn't explicitly know that Micolash has, say, 10 separate audio files for his full boss dialog, *its possible an extra file or two was just missed/written off for being something else.* I mean as far as some people are aware, an extra Micolash_Audio11.mp3 could've just been him moaning. However! How files and code lines are organized and written depend entirely on the programmer- the same way some games use full spheres or just cones for eyes in certain models. Its a stylistic choice. So the cut content thats being brought to light could've also just been locked away somewhere deep within the files of what was the old build. Which could've also been locked away because its cut content and probably hard to access (you certainly wouldn't want the computer to accidentally read that line and execute it, so to put simply: This file was floating in the void.) Same applies to cut models/enemies - they exist, but float in the void because the game isn't supposed to be rendering them. Animations and skeletons would be attached to that specific model as well. So if you can't find one, theres a chance won't find the other. *So really it could be that being we only recently got full access to this hidden void + the trend of looking deeper in how soulsborne games work causing people to pay a little bit extra attention.* Edit: Vaati himself actually admits that reading/hacking bloodborne files has only recently become more refined, so the answer is most certainty is my finishing statement. We've only just scratched the surface of cut content my friend!
Does it really count as 'hidden' if it isn't in the forward-facing game? People are datamining Elden Ring to find all sorts of 'cut' dialogue lines and other bits of code still present in the retail release but given that none of that is meant as a part of the played game experience, how much quality does it really have? At what point are people just obsessively digging up the bones of previous builds to headcanon significance into the final product? Ironic that this would come from a game with an intrinsic message warning about the perils of digging to deep and unhealthy fascination with the inscrutable and unknown.
I just had a thought while watching this, what if the reason the wet nurse and Mergo are invisible to us is because our insight isn’t high enough? Like we’re not able to reach that level in game, but lore-wise they might actually have an appearance..
Who knows maybe someone finally uncovers if there's actual in game model for the two. Kinda like how it took like half a decade for people to finally find out ocelotte has a character model but the baby smashing is too graphic lol
That's a theme within cosmic horror. Beings from a higher dimension are often beyond our 3 dimensional understanding, so they may appear partially, or completely, invisible or as bright lights.
I like this gentle cutscene way more then the ogrinal when I first saw wet nurse I didn’t think much of it for such an important boss I just felt nothing (oh an easy boss) but this the kinda horror way it looms behind the player adds to the tense of ‘what the hell is that!’ Then when it embraces the child almost like a mother it non threatening so when you fight it it kinda make you think are you the monster? For hunting this creature making you question what you doing it like the father boss at the start
@filleswe91 it is actually, and he was referring to a very easy , reliable and well known dupe from the original demon's souls on ps3 which was tied to causing overflow by using the nexial binding while backing out of blacksmith boldwin's item shop inventory. If done successfully the next deposit into Thomas's inventory will cause about a hundred (if I remember correctly) of the deposited item to be made regardless of how much you actually deposited
Funfact: When Wet Nurse descends onto Mergo, we hear the same bubbling noise we can hear when Moon Presence captivates us and turns the PC into Gherman 2.0
From Software goes through a lot of different ideas for bosses and zones. I love seeing these little development processes as they try to find he best fit for their vision. I look forward to the dev side of Elden Ring when it comes to release. Keep it up Lance, love the content.
Yep. One of the positive things that Elden Ring will be released on PS4 is probably that we probably won't have to wait ages until Lance finds something cool.
Fun fact: As we all know, Mergo’s Lullaby is the song that plays on the music box given to you by the little girl at the start of the game. But did you know if you go back to Oedon Chapel after defeating Mergo’s Wet Nurse, Viola’s corpse is no longer there?
I dunno. There's something about this game I can't get enough of. Love this game. Probably my favorite game of all time. Can't wait for a next gen upgrade.
@@civilizedsquid2455 It's not just the cosmic horror though, it's the setting, the lore, the twisted imagery of Catholicism. Obviously the cosmic horror plats a large part. But I remember being so absorbed by the game even before encountering any cosmic beings. It's an absolute masterpiece of a game.
Thanks Lance for the content! I really think that is amazing and strange that a supposedly great one like Wet nurse uses an ordinary gesture as motherly as calming down a crying baby ... Just added some layers to what we are about to do in the boss fight.
I like how the changes create an implication from a gentle and caring creature that's simply trying to protect an unseen child, to an almost grieving and accusing glare (implying that simply looking upon the infant killed it, or it was already dead). While the final official version is neat, these feel like they could have been added to the final game without too much of a thematic whiplash.
Grant us eyes once again, Lance. Thank you for all your work in extracting all these alternative cutscenes and showing the evolution of what we ultimately see. This is so, so cool.
Since playing bloodborne for the first time I've always had this feeling that the Gascoige family side-quest was way to thematically similar to the whole Mergo thing to be mere coincidence. its always super exciting to see stuff like this, makes me wonder in what ways the game was swirled and churned before reaching the final product!
Considering that I actually swore when she appeared behind the hunter as they were looking into the pram/carriage, I'd have probably needed a change of pants if I'd experienced that in-game. It's an easy boss right, but it's one of my favorites. The music being much more to the background and so simple is really fitting, and we can see how it's meant to keep Mergo calm during the fight.
This is absolutely insightful stuff! It's really cool to get more clarity on FromSoft's conceptualization for Mergo and their Wet Nurse I can see why the team seemed to have been attached to keeping the Hunter in the cutscene, it really adds an to the Wet Nurse's appearance; especially in that first iteration which gave some horror vibes!
Although i really like the original versions of the cutscene, i feel like it humanizes wet nurse and mergo who are supposed to be beings beyond our understanding. So even if the finished cutscene is simpler i believe it is more in part with the lore.
I love the angle at which she approaches in the second revision, it's almost as if she came out of the hunter somehow (a cool lore would be Mergo manifesting the parenting instinct in men in the form of the wet nurse), the fact that she looks like she could almost be touching the hunter gives it a touch of horror that I like, that even though massive she is completely silent since a capable and trained hunter at this point doesn't even notice her. I find the "She could had just ended me there" feel to be realy cool, I always felt that this last battle didn't felt as impactful.
I really love all of the enemy designs in Bloodborne, but something about the how the Wet Nurse looks and moves is just so compelling to me, she might actually be my favorite. Underrated character design in my opinion. She’s shown up in a couple of my nightmares, but not in a threatening way, more like a guardian. I’m really glad to see this video.
interesting stuff! i always thought Mergo was taken from Yharnam by humans who wanted to make contact with the Great Ones using her umbilical cord in the waking world, and that the nightmare of mensis is Mergo's own creation, where the Wet Nurse is the Nightmare form that Mergo himself takes, mimicking someone from the waking world. kind of like how the Nightmare-Orphan of Kos takes a similar form to Gehrman, who was presumably the one who killed Kos
She was/is a Succubus? I wonder what the original idea about this was, as it's a demon feeding on sexual desire. Not a wetnurse. Super interesting again! Or "Sucubus" was just a placeholder someone chose because they needed something for the development, until they got a "boss name". I do like the protective nature in the older versions tho!
Interesting video! It's great to see how stuff changes and some of is consistent throughout. Gotta say that Mergo's Wet Nurse theme still gives me tremendous anxiety, it's so creepy.
wet nurse has one of the best designs to be ever created. there is a mod that is beeing played by heyzeushereistoast and it is in full darkness. the nurse looks so amazing
If you listen to the sound of the Moon Presence hugging the hunter in the ending where you replace Gehrman, you will notice it's the same sound as Mergo's Wet Nurse when she hugs Mergo.
@@lahunica2726 Thank you for mentioning this. I have never noticed this detail, even in Wet Nurse’s sequence. The same audio effect being used again to convey a similar theme or action after the Moon Presence reveals herself is kinda blowing my mind a bit.
In my YT suggestions the thumbnail for this video had its title partially cut off by the video length display, so it read "Bloodborne cut content: Mergo and the succ"
I like both versions, but I think the introduction of the final version is really good. How the head-neck just keeps unrolling and then is revealed to be invisible.
The story trailer had a clip from these cutscenes in it. The trailer also has an earlier version of the doll and some different dialogue from William as well. A lot of other different stuff as well.
I definitely like the more tender concept than the one we got. Just remove the patting of the baby to soothe him, which I think went a bit too far into making her look like a normal, human mother. The thrusting of her hands to protect Mergo from you to gently holding him and then viciously attacking you in the fight is a very cool shift.
Am I alone in feeling like the Wet Nurse is either a half realised idea or an after thought? Especially seeing how they cut back more and more and just how little is ever said about it, it doesn't help that it is one of the only bosses I always forget is even in the game.
I’ve always had the feeling that the presentation of Wet Nurse and her associated lore was intentionally vague. The Hunter’s quest and story are pretty ancillary to what’s going on with Mensis and Queen Yharnam; at this point The Hunter is really only concerned with stopping the nightmare and killing more Great Ones, so Mergo’s background and the circumstances of his existence aren’t of much concern. In fact, I think the lack of explanation kind of further drives home the point that The Hunter is in way too deep at that point in the story, and is hanging on the precipice of madness.
Not so much 'half-realised' as 'condensed'. I think they sought to conserve unnecessary detail (which sounds odd for From Software, but bear with me here) and try to convey the same traits in a shorter scene, to save on space. Effective storytelling in video games involves careful balance of detail vs resources. Anything that's missing can always be added later in flavour text, which is something From always likes to do.
It's just how Fromsoftware (or mostly Miyazaki) works. Early versions of dialogues and cutscenes are often much more explicit. And then they start cutting things, remove dialogues etc. I think its 100% intended that people have absolutely no idea what just happened when fighting the Wet Nurse. For me she is one of the most fascinating bosses in Bloodborne. Only complaint i have is that almost immediately after her we fight the last boss, which of course makes that moment not last really long. Maybe thats the reason why some people forget her.
Considering that the statue in the Grand Cathedral appears to be a stylized depiction of the Wet Nurse (a headless, winged woman wearing robes who's pouring something down upon the altar and effigies below) I think of her as more of a puzzle that we're meant to try to figure out... She is a succubus, a demon of dreams and nightmares who seeks to propagate herself. She is an ubume/kokakuchou youkai, the avian spirit of a mother who died in late pregnancy or childbirth. She's an angel, a winged attendant of a god. She is Senjuu Kannon, the multi-armed goddess of mercy in Buddhism who welcomes the virtuous into the Pure Land/Paradise. She is formless from her neck up, which makes her one of the most intriguing Great Ones in the game. There's just way too much to read into her to call her an after-thought.
They probably hated the funny little dash the hunter does but kept trying to make it work until they scrapped it to what we have in the finished product. Love your videos Lance!
The third revision is by far the best. I wonder why Fromsoft would be unhappy with it and try to cut down on what we saw. I like the contrast between Bloodborne and DS3. Both have invisible babies, but each is treated so differently by their caretakers.
My thoughts are that the Wetnurse is in the same sort of family as Oedon? Pretty sure this is well explored, the Child being of Oedon, but just now realized that the Nurse is also formless in a way, only the clothes are formed around her
I love seeing all this cut content. It’s so fascinating and adds to the lore in such a satisfying way. I understand they have to make revisions and cuts to complete the game so sometimes really interesting elements don’t make it to the final product. The final cut scene looks like a hybrid of the first and final revision, going for the drop down entrance while maintaining the gentle handling of the baby. When I encountered her the first time, this cut scene looked like she was trying to protect Mergo from the hunter and initiated the fight for that purpose. I think that last revision with her violently dropping down would have given a completely different vibe and contradict what the game was leading up to.

Plus that has parallels how the Orphan of Kos boss is more the projection of the real orphan’s fears, not the real orphan itself.
@@TheCrewExpendable Not exactly. Bloodborne is way more complex than that.
(Some people argue that she doesn't bleed because she's an illusion, but the closest precedent we have to that is Rom's spawn, and they do bleed contrary to the Wet Nurse.)
Also, you're probably aware of the fact that Bloodborne borrows a lot from Shintoism and Buddhism, right?
They are always "X of Y":
The Wet Nurse of Mergo.
The way the Hunter is like "OH SHI-" in the cutscene
I really like how out of all non-sekiro souls protagonists, the hunter is probably the least imposing/more clueless in most cutscenes, i genuinely like it
@@mausebas Honestly, that's part of why they're my favorite of the protags cause that cluelessness is, aside from just being full of personality, is also just super charming
Also cause it's really funny given that they're casually wiping out Eldritch Gods and abominations beyond human comprehension right here
I love how the moon peeks just over the edge of the arena.
Don't know why but that creeps me out so much.
its havin a cheeky peak through the window
This actually too appears in the over world of Bloodborne. During the blood moon, you can see it hover over the sky, not above the clouds, but below it.
I think that's just a game physics engine thing they didn't think too much about. I think you're supposed to not see that.
Granted, throughout the game, the "Sun" (might just be the moon) and the Moon are frequently seen to be ahead of the background that's full of clouds and smoke and stuff, but that could just be artistic direction? IDK actually.
Yes cause that's the main reason the hunter was selected by the MP. MP's main goal was to finish Mergo .
I like it better as well, it definitely conveys a wet nurses attitude better.
She's wet nurse right, so the caring, more nurturing side should be present. I totally agree with you, the Original versions were better.
They are all too goofy, im glad we got what we got.
I never assumed the Wet Nurse was eating the baby. And while the older cutscene is sweeter, I like the way It appears more in the new version (which was at least improved from the 5th iteration)
@@schmebulockjizz It only looks goofy because it wasn't refined. I too would have preferd original version if it was refined.

Not really.
The beads hanging on it kinda make it reminiscence of a dreamcatcher.
It's clearly some kind of amulett made of solid metal.
A dreamcatcher always has a string pattern in the center, kinda like a spiderweb.
Funny, I was just about to say that the Nurse's necklace looks like a stylized version of the Communion Rune.
@@GrahamChapman that’s a nice detail
@@ManEaterBrainBug yeah definitely not a dreamcatcher. Just looks like any regular amulet.
@@Tulip_bip Which is ultimately meaningless.
The whole "not knowing" thing to me is absolutely garbo.
@@kozmicflush980 why?
The whole plot of Bloodborne exists because the Great Ones want to have children, but they can't so they look for a surrogate
@@AlessioTerzi3 The fact that they are all females, except for Oedon, also justify their actions.
@@wildman7220 pretty sure the great ones dont really have a gender
@@lucipharis Except they do.
Bloodborne's files have rather recently been put under such a focused lens, so, the explanation could be that;
Some of the cut dialogs don't have attached subtitle files.
*So really it could be that being we only recently got full access to this hidden void + the trend of looking deeper in how soulsborne games work causing people to pay a little bit extra attention.*
Edit: Vaati himself actually admits that reading/hacking bloodborne files has only recently become more refined, so the answer is most certainty is my finishing statement. We've only just scratched the surface of cut content my friend!
@Internet Dragon76 that's so fucking cool. Thanks for this great explanation. Coders are so based 🙏🏾
Does it really count as 'hidden' if it isn't in the forward-facing game?
People are datamining Elden Ring to find all sorts of 'cut' dialogue lines and other bits of code still present in the retail release but given that none of that is meant as a part of the played game experience, how much quality does it really have? At what point are people just obsessively digging up the bones of previous builds to headcanon significance into the final product? Ironic that this would come from a game with an intrinsic message warning about the perils of digging to deep and unhealthy fascination with the inscrutable and unknown.
Mergo's Lullaby is great for like thirty seconds and then it makes me want to die

I just had a thought while watching this, what if the reason the wet nurse and Mergo are invisible to us is because our insight isn’t high enough? Like we’re not able to reach that level in game, but lore-wise they might actually have an appearance..
Very interesting possibility, next time I fight this boss I'll remember this.
Who knows maybe someone finally uncovers if there's actual in game model for the two. Kinda like how it took like half a decade for people to finally find out ocelotte has a character model but the baby smashing is too graphic lol
@@NinjapowerMS That would be amazing! :)
I always thought the reason Mergo had no visible form was because her consciousness was alive but her body was long gone.
I think the beginning of the unused cutscene might be in a Japanese trailer for the launch of bb. Might be wrong tho

@filleswe91 it is actually, and he was referring to a very easy , reliable and well known dupe from the original demon's souls on ps3 which was tied to causing overflow by using the nexial binding while backing out of blacksmith boldwin's item shop inventory. Isn't that the same noise as the Celestial Emissaries emit?

There won't be a next gen upgrade. The PS5 doesn't have the power to properly run Bloodborne either.
Thanks Lance for the content! I really think that is amazing and strange that a supposedly great one like Wet nurse uses an ordinary gesture as motherly as calming down a crying baby ... Just added some layers to what we are about to do in the boss fight.
I absolutely love mergo’s wet nurse and I’ve been looking forward to this video for a while, thanks so much for this ❤️
FromSoft sure does love them invisible babies.
I really liked the editing/clips used in this one, good work man
I like how the changes create an implication from a gentle and caring creature that's simply trying to protect an unseen child, to an almost grieving and accusing glare (implying that simply looking upon the infant killed it, or it was already dead). While the final official version is neat, these feel like they could have been added to the final game without too much of a thematic whiplash.
Grant us eyes once again, Lance. Thank you for all your work in extracting all these alternative cutscenes and showing the evolution of what we ultimately see. This is so, so cool.
This is brilliant Lance. Thanks for showing it off.

I’m so glad you’re still digging for content . We appreciate it so much bro!
can't say i was expecting the wet nurse to body slam mergo like that like they just jumped off of a steel chair

I can see why the team seemed to have been attached to keeping the Hunter in the cutscene, it really adds an to the Wet Nurse's appearance; especially in that first iteration which gave some horror vibes!
Lance still entertaining us with new Bloodborne content in 2021 😁 👍 Thank you for this!
The nursemaid and Oceiros should start a support group for people with invisible babies.
My main takeaway from this is not being able to unsee those two round headress-pins up top as googly eyes thanks to the angle...
Thanks for granting us eyes, Lance.
Although i really like the original versions of the cutscene, i feel like it humanizes wet nurse and mergo who are supposed to be beings beyond our understanding. So even if the finished cutscene is simpler i believe it is more in part with the lore.
Oh boy, I sure hope they add this cutscene in Bloodborne: Eat Rom's Pancreas Edition, available on PS5 and PC!
Clicked as soon as I woke up and saw the notif!

Beautiful video! Bravo!

I definitely like the more tender concept than the one we got. Just remove the patting of the baby to soothe him, which I think went a bit too far into making her look like a normal, human mother.
A good chunk of the bosses seemed like it was half assed in the vanilla lol. The DLC is too good that it made up for it though.
So glad people are still finding new stuff for this great game
Interesting.. just today I checked when was the last time you posted.

They probably hated the funny little dash the hunter does but kept trying to make it work until they scrapped it to what we have in the finished product.

The second/third revision is definitely better than the final product in my opinion. Would have made the boss more memorable.
The third revision is by far the best. I wonder why Fromsoft would be unhappy with it and try to cut down on what we saw.

What a treat!
