    I hit a slippery spot like that the other day, decided best option was turning around

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  6 днів тому +1

      We seriously debated on backing down the mountain, but with being on a shelf road, nowhere to turn around, and how icy it was, it seemed like our best option was to continue moving forward. I'm glad you had the option to turn around! If we thought it would have been safer, we would have done the same! (But then we wouldn't have all this good footage now, would we?) 🤣
      Thanks so much for the comment!

    • @MountainSionnach
      @MountainSionnach 5 днів тому

      Same, we had to stay on the trail for at least 3 miles before we found a spot to turn around at. There was a cherokee parked there and it looked like they walked the full trail out instead of trying to drive back.

  • @XYoverland
    @XYoverland 9 днів тому +1

    I know that exact spot. On the right side there are a couple rock shelves, and on the hill to the right of that are a couple of natural springs (there are lots along that trail). In the winter, it results in hard pack ice in many spots like that one, making it very dangerous. The rock shelf makes it so that it sends you toward the edge with momentum. I got stuck in that exact spot about three years ago and now won’t go back in the winter. Those guys are lucky you came by with a winch.

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  9 днів тому +1

      There were definitely some valuable lessons learned on this trip. It makes us realize that it doesn't matter what the trail rating is, weather can change the difficulty of the trail in a heartbeat. Thank you for following our trip and commenting!!

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  10 днів тому

      Life has been crazy, but we are hoping to get out there more than we did last year! 🤣 Some of our favorite trips have been out in the snow, it's like a different world. And the kids absolutely love getting to experience snow like this. You don't see it often like this where we are from in NC. Flagpole Knob will probably be an annual trip every winter for us to get our snow fix!
      Thanks for sticking around and watching our adventures, it means a lot!

  • @meluis11
    @meluis11 10 днів тому +1

    Do you think momentum would've helped ? I'd imagine it's hard to speed through there because you have no control. I feel like going slow is probably worse right?

    • @meluis11
      @meluis11 10 днів тому +1

      And how about chains? I just moved to the states and haven't done any snow wheeling so just learning

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  10 днів тому

      Momentum definitely helps! You sort of have to find that sweet spot...not too fast, not too slow!

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  10 днів тому

      I know chains work well on actual roads. I'm not sure how well they would work on dirt and mud. We typically just lower the tires' air pressure and hope for the best!🤪

    • @JimmyDevere
      @JimmyDevere 6 днів тому +1

      Depends. Momentum without directional control in slippery conditions on the side of a shelf road not good, getting over an obstacle is ok but you risk damage to vehicle from unseen rocks under snow. Being in freezing temps with a broken vehicle still a risk. Better to take time and build the road with a shovel, use a winch and traction boards etc.

      The dude that kept slipping either was slightly drunk or his shoes have to worst traction ever.

    • @GoCarolinaWild
      @GoCarolinaWild  8 днів тому

      @GhostNinjaTactical oh gosh, that was all of us. We have about 20-30 slip n falls from all of us. It was so slippy, and the hill was just steep enough that we could create a 10 minute blooper reel from all the times we fell. 😅
