Ideally, Sega would provide a few people from the Ryu ga Gotoku studio to the Shenmue 4 development team to keep Yu Suzuki's 'ambitions' in check regarding gameplay and marketing. It wouldn't make Shenmue as succesfull as Like a Dragon, but it would certainly allow the game to review better and reach a wider audience.
I just really hope they use the framework of Shenmue III, instead of starting completely new again... I actually quite liked how the game played and how the environments looked.
- Made me wait for 18 years for a sequel: I could take it. - The sequel did not have the quality I expected: I could take it - There is no official announcement for Shenmue 4 yet: I can barely take it. - If Ren dies at some point: I will fuckn RIOT
Great video, as always and appreciate the shoutouts. At this point, I just want more Shenmue, in whatever form it takes; Shenmue IV or 0, a comic book or novel, I'll take anything.
My opinion is that the developers need a long-term partner, a long-term contract, where all possible games will be spelled out, right up to the end of the saga. If there is such a partner and he really gives guarantees for the release of all games, then maybe it’s really worth releasing Shenmue 0 and remakes. You can alternate games, for example, first Shenmue IV, then Shenmue 0 using the same technologies. Then you can officially announce the end of the saga in Shenmue V and announce a large-scale and long-term development. And along the way, you can make a complete remake of 1-3 games, this can be done through two games according to the scheme Yokosuka + Ship + Hong Kong and the second Kowloon + Bailu + Niau, on the one hand we slightly change the sequence of games, on the other we add additional content in the form of a ship (and perhaps returning the Miao village) and optimally distributing content across games. Having ready-made technologies and the entire script, such remakes should not be very complex and expensive, and should not take much time. Thus, by the potential finale, the entire series will be based on modern technologies, while remakes should be optional, they should not restart the saga, the main story should run in parallel.
I really hope Shenmue 4 happens. I am worried though. If we don’t have a Kickstarter this year for the fans to start funding it then I don’t know a) how it will get funded at all and b) the amount of confidence Yu has that it can get funded at all. I would love a grand open world Shenmue 4 like 1 and 2 but I am OK with the scale being paired back to get a game with some story progression out there. If they kept the gameplay and graphics stylised and simple and put the majority of their focus on telling a great story, I would be OK with that.
It would be cool if Sega used the Yakuza engine or Yu borrowed it to make a Shenmue "Kiwami" of the first 3 games and finished the game with two more games, on the same engine. The latest games in the Yakuza series are very beautiful and would go perfectly with Shenmue. But honestly, I have zero hopes for Sega and Shenmue. And considering that the fourth game is taking a long time to be made... and the third didn't go as well as we expected (sorry, but the story of 3 moved forward, what, two steps?) my desire for a continuation of Shenmue is very weak
The story in terms of what happened was fine but the execution of it was the issue. Shenmue 4 can be what Shenmue 2 was to Shenmue 1 in terms of hammering things forward is done well. That's reason enough to go all in on this.
Here's my thought on Shenmue 4: Yu Suzuki needs to create a solid gold statue of a character that will be in Shenmue 4 as a way to advertise its upcoming release. We all love Shenmue merchandise right? it makes money toward Shenmue 4's development and the statue has to be something that drives what Shenmue is to us and new people to the series.
I just want it confirmed. Lets remember Suzuki isn't getting any younger.if shenmue 4 does happen, it needs to be the last.I doubt Suzuki would be around for shenmue 5.just end it with,4
I always supported the plot idea that Lan Di killing Ren at the end of Shenmue 3 would of worked so well to fuel Ryo’s fire and add something infinitely more interesting
@@RetrofIex Well, as long as Yu Suzuki is hopeful that he can make a proper Shenmue 4, I'm hopeful as well. I mainly love Shenmue because of the gameplay. The story itself isn't that special. But the way it's told through this real life simulation type gameplay. That's something unique and special unlike anything else in the world.
@@KenShackler I agree but it's been 25 years since Shenmue, Yu Suzuki won't live forever. I hope we see the story play out in some form with his blessing rather than end where it is.
I hope there will be Shenmue 4, I'm praying for it, and I'm actually new to these three games and I love all three games. I just hope that in the fourth game, we will also play for Shenhua.
I think Shenmue 0 prequel is a mistake. We need to finish the saga before Yu gets too old to work. I think they should get funding for part IV and V, and release both within 3 years.
Ah, so there is a better avenue to for this IP to see the light of day again. Keep in mind that Shenmue's cutscenes are rendered in game, and much of it's gameplay is a lot like Yakuza-lite. In terms of the open world itself, it's not that particularly complex. The most costs comes from VA and Mocap. So, I'd say just start over this game as a Remake and give the players the ability to play male or female and allow them to create their own character face-wise. Let's condense the Shenmue series and turn 1, 2 and 3 into 1 game and just add a few more battles, maybe create 3 fighting styles for players to pick from and mimic existing rpg mechanics for gameplay. Example, 2nd enemy is approaching, prompt to press Y to counter, Ryu does an amazing move that stuns that character and allows you to charge up another move, charge move is executed and looks cool and feels good. Can add some side quests too, like Tom was our friend, maybe he gives us a quest to help him with some thiefs > Tom teams up with you in battle, bromance fighting moves ensues etc. There's a lot of potential in this IP.
crazy I was like 13 when I played this game 15 when I would search is shenmue 3 coming out now I'm 38 still wondering if they're gonna finish this game
I've always wanted to fight lan di the place where you meet him ive always wanted to go back to Japan and fight him in the dojo with everyone there but everyone is taking care of something like ren the black suits Chen and fuku San the mad angles like in yakuza 4 they are playable fights
02:39 I forget which interview it was but Yu Suzuki said that's indeed the four grandmasters and not the Chi You Men leaders on the mountain tops. As for the guy in the sky I'm not sure that's tentei. I hope we find out someday.
I really hope there is an agreement with sega and ys net to get a shenmue 4 made and maybe a shenmue 5/6 and maybe a 0 if that’s possible over the next decade
Just wish they would go back to similar graphics and game mechanics like the first 2. The game wouldnt look as good graphic wise, but they could save a bunch of money. Would be similar to Sonic Mania where they created a new game with the old mechanics and 2D scroll style. The game would then feel very classic Shenmue and not like Shenmue 3. Shenmue 3 tried too hard to implement an RPG style game where you have to grind out stats. Shenmue is meant for exploration and completing the storyline.
They felt at the time they couldn't and with the lack of experience on the DC hardware (keep in mind they'd need to pay for the engine) and next to no documentation it was more cost effective to go with a new engine.

Shenmue 3 honestly not suitable for every gamer. Yu suzuki made it for Hard-core fans, and no Publishers would risk investing into 50/50 chance of success game. FF7 Remake succeed because FF franchise still very famous to new gamers. So, unless some very big company that have deep pocket and massive love for Shenmue, the reality of Shenmue 4 is very low. It's break my heart.
They have to find a middle ground in my mind. Given the recent revivial of franchises that have historically sold less than Shenmue I'm sure they could find a cost effective way to get 4 made. Episodic is very much something I think could work.
I'm kinda disappointed for shenmue. first two were really masterpiece and no one could make a game even similar to them. but then sega leaved it to some worthless companies and now we have a boring game to deal with, shenmue 3. and obviously next game will be same way.
3 was woeful after all the fan money and hope put into it. He should be ashamed of coming up with that and doesnt deserve the chance to make a 4th game.
I need Shenmue 4. At least before the world ends lmao
We had a close call with Iran 😔 c'mon shenmue! The bombs are dropping.

I'm so thirsty for more Shenmue. I LOVED III, it was like the training arc for Ryo where he followed in his father's footsteps somewhat unknowingly.

No need to start over even if they move to UE5.
Yeah my only complaint is the hunger, other than that Shenmue 3 was good just improve combat and some other things

I'd love it to be set in Shanghai! When Shenmue was set, Shanghai was developing quickly. Really cool twist for the Shenmue world.

I believe Microsoft would be a good partner but they don't see this diamond hidden in the rough.
And they turned Shenmue 3 down before the 2015 Kickstarter
Agree, they should get a long-term 10 years partnership. Within the 10 years they must release Shenmue IV, Shenmue prequel and Shenmue V

My man Ren better not die.
He may well do.
I think that realistically a graphic novel series would stand the most chance of wrapping up Yu Suzuki’s vision at this point.
It would work very well
