Susan, you are truly great teacher !) I already learned so many good things from your videos. Can not stop watching them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge !
What you can do with the peat pots, use a sharp blade and cut slots in the sides and the bottom of the pots and then soak them in water before planting them. That will allow the roots a place to exit the pots. On the peat plugs, just remove the plastic netting before planting. Have a excellent year in your garden. Enjoyed you video!!
I'm binge watching all your videos and feeling like I'm going to make this gardening year the best and most abundant ever! You're the best! Lots of love from Latvia ♥️
Thank you @susansinthegarden. I’m starting my own veggies from seeds for the first time this year. Your video is so helpful 😃. Good luck in your garden this year!
Thank you for this video! I just started some seedlings in a large tray like that and set them by the window. There's not many sunny days yet here in WI but we will see how they do!
I bought a new grow light system and did a test run to make sure I worked out the kinks before my summer seedlings are planted. I am using the Gardener Supply Seedstarting kit that you featured in your video. I ended up with algae on the surface of the seed starting mix. How can I prevent this from happening in the further? I used a sterile seed starting mix and tapwater. I did leave the light on for very long periods of time. Thanks for your help!
Hi, Jennifer. That can happen from time to time but it doesn't harm the seedlings. I keep the grow lights on from about 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., so about 15 hours.
I 'goggled' answers to Algae development and there are two things you need to know: Algae is caused in great part (but not exclusively) by Heat & Sunlight & Tapwater contains 'chlorine' which encourages ALGAE growth. I'm going to copy paste what I found but I would advise you use 'distilled' water or FILTER the chlorine out of your Tap Water to use on your plant starts. Another gardener I watch even suggests running 'boiling water' through your Seed Start Mixes before using them because they could carry over-wintering pests. "Algae is caused by too much light". Brighter lighting will encourage algae to grow, this is a natural part of an aquariums environment but algae blooms or problems are very rarely caused entirely by lighting. Heat and sunlight break down chlorine and encourage faster algae growth...
Thanks for contacting me. We are on a well so there is no chlorine in our water. Seed -starting mixes are supposed to be sterile so there should never be any overwintering pests in it. Cheers.
@@SusansInTheGarden That's true but some have reported problems with particular brands so it depends I would guess on what you buy. Yeah my father is on Well water too but I live in the Suburbs and I'm thinking a lot of your viewers probably live there or in apartments, just wanted Jennifer to know that the 'chlorine' in tap water (unless she's on Well water too, lol) could be adding to her problems...
Susan, would you consider putting together a list of your favorite garden supplies sources local to Spokane? I have had trouble finding the best spots in town and usually just end up going to Wal Mart to get good prices.
Hi, Elisheva. For all types of garden supplies, I prefer NW Seed & Pet. They have 2 locations, I prefer the one on Sprague because the gal there who orders their seeds (Laylah) does a fabulous job of bringing in a really nice variety of seeds. For plants, I like Blue Moon Nursery, Judy's Enchanted Garden, and Plant Farm (for houseplants). I hope that helps a bit.
Hi, Diane. Once the majority of the seeds germinate, remove the lid. And yes, if you're using a heat mat, you can turn it off and remove it from underneath. The main purpose is for it to help with germination. Happy gardening!
This producer is the best presenter on UA-cam. Clear, detail oriented and easy to follow. Finally someone who understands our needs! Thank you.
Thank you so much!

Hi Susan. Great info as usual! Just double checking, once the seeds have germinated, do I takeoff the lid and turn off the heat mat?

Awesome tutorial
Thank you so much!
How much of the milled moss do you sprinkle on the containers?
The teensiest little dusting of it!
That was most helpful!
My cauliflower has germinated in the plastic jug💥
