    Thank you both for this time in this amazing-and SO real-story.
    The “Daily Bread” episodes on the Patreon channel explored a powerful application of these chapters: how we may not be putting our lives on the line like these young men, but we definitely face losing the kind of life we want (or what we THINK we want or need/our timetable, etc). Applying “whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall find it”, to this story gives a whole new dimension to the Savior’s teaching.

    Thank you for this podcast, especially the focus on Bishops and youth. My husband was newly sustained as a Bishop. Prior to his call, we both felt that the focus on youth wasn't as strong as it needed to be. I'm in YW, so we both are working towards changing the ward's expectation and culture about his focus. What especially was helpful was the idea of having an executive secretary to take care of the logistics, as he has been doing all of that himself (he did it when he was a counselor, but when he was released and in a different position, no one else took it up and the program floundered😢). Many thanks!

      I have the same feelings about Primary. I think the expectations are far too low. In my new calling as CTR 7 class, I had the distinct impression that we needed to spend time in the scriptures. About half of my class remembers to bring their scriptures (8 year old!), and I borrow scriptures for the others. I am teaching them to gain skill marking important words and phrases, and all of them can now find the verse we are going to read. They take our studies seriously and ask excellent questions. They totally rose to these higher expectations.

      I am currently serving as a branch president, and many in our branch struggle with the fear and anxiety that you reference. I have pondered and sought the Lord’s direction in how to help them. Many of the answers that I have received are illustrated in the chapter block this week. First, a focus on covenants and their associated promises is essential to rid ourselves of the paralysis of fear and to re-establish hope. Second, understanding our potential based on President Nelson’s three primary identities adds inertia necessary to build spiritual momentum. Third, understanding what it means to stand against evil as Captain Moroni. I find Lehi’s admonition to his son’s to “arise” and “awake” in 2 Nephi 1:20-23 helpful. Obedience and unity provide the core action in resisting the Adversary. As I have implemented these elements in my personal life, all feelings of fear and anxiety have dissipated. Perhaps these things might be helpful in identifying the Lord’s will in helping you to find your way through it all.

    I think we need to remember it was fallen Nephites that were dragging the Lamanites and Nephites into these endless destructions.

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому +2

      You are so right!!! Those Lamanites would have left the Nephites alone after Zerahemnah's attack if it hadn't been for Nephite dissenters. So how can we best apply that to our lives and be better prepared as a result?

    • @carlajowebb2537
      @carlajowebb2537 2 місяці тому +1

      We need to look carefully at anyone who is advocating contentious behavior. Is it true, or just an emotional response? Are they just trying to manipulate us into actions to further their own ends. I cannot help but see our own political climate in these 'war chapters'.

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому

      @@carlajowebb2537 Amen to that! There is far to much success for evil because we are caught up in everyone else's emotional responses and we join in and the whole thing creates a pot of contention. Those emotional appeals are too easily used to get us to think, feel and act in a way that we would not normally think, feel or act.

    • @rodneyboyce8090

      @@carlajowebb2537This deeply concerns me as well. The connected, virtual world in which we participate, rewards the voices that accumulate the most clicks, likes, views and subscriptions. Those receiving the rewards have learned that negativity, fear, conflict and anxiety feed algorithms and attract people thus increasing the reward. Staying inside our fortifications as was pointed out in the podcast really is our best security. Our walls are built from covenants, obedience, righteous practices and unity.

    Do our leaders measure up to Helaman?
    "Now it was the custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy" (3 Nephi 3:19)
    If the leaders of our youth are not prophets in their own right, being righteously gifted with the spirits of revelation and also prophecy, they youth have no one with which to make a covenant like the Stripling Warriors did. We need both.
    We need righteous youth who will covenant to hearken to the counsel of their righteous leaders, as their righteous leaders hearken to the Lord, obeying their leaders' commands with "exactness" (Alma 57:21), and we need leaders who will hearken to the Lord, obey His commandments, and keep His law.
    Then, and only then, will the conditions be met for the Near-Eastern Emperor/Vassal Covenant to provide us with miraculous deliverance in the face of certain destruction.

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому +2

      This is so important! President Nelson has certainly been asking us all to be where we can Hear Him, to where we receive personal revelation regularly. We should all be receiving inspiration for how we can help our children, grandchildren, nieces, etc. Those with callings to work with the youth should also certainly be receiving revelation about that. We all NEED it desperately. Our youth need it too!

    I enjoyed this episode. And I think the lessons discussed regarding Pahoran and Captain Moroni are valuable for our society. However, I don't think the conclusions presented regarding Moroni and Pahoran have much basis in the text. In fact, there is quite a lot in the text that would suggest Moroni was the patient and forgiving one. Helaman appealed to the government several times for more men and supplies. He eventually received a small amount of supplies, but the men who brought them had no idea why there weren't more (Alma 58:34). It sounds like either the coup had not happened by that point , or it was a very quiet coup. Pahoran failed to keep his judgement seat, and he also failed to let anyone know his situation, or to warn them why he couldn't respond. As a result, many lives were lost (in Nephihah) and almost lost (the stripling warriors nearly starving to death). Had Moroni not written that letter, more would have died, including the stripling warriors. In the letter, Moroni outlined the steps he would take to reestablish the cause of freedom. Once those steps were outlined, Pahoran overcame his doubts about what action was justified and decided to take those exact steps and invited Moroni to join him. We like to think Pahoran was the hero through his patience, but that patience was responsible for many deaths and suffering.
    . It is easy for us to sit in our peaceful homes and say Moroni overreacted. But If we were living in that war and we could choose whether to risk our lives either with Moroni's leadership, or Pahoran's, we'd all choose Moroni's.

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому +1

      I very much agree and am sorry that it somehow came across another way in the podcast. I think that Moroni was mistaken about Pahoran's intents, and was operating on insufficient information. But I think he was inspired, and that while his inspiration mixed with some of his own assumptions, it was still inspiration and resulted in the steps that needed to be taken. You can listen to my daily thought (daily bread) on my Patreon website (TSAR.website) to hear me talk about how Moroni was inspired.
      Thanks for explaining this so well! This was a needed comment!

    I appreciated the discussion regarding staying within our fortifications. I have found social media, television, news, politics and music have become so thoroughly saturated with pornography, violence, verbal conflict, vile language, etc. that I simply cannot participate in them. In order to stay fortified, I have turned them off and deleted the apps. I have gone so far as to return to paper scriptures with electronic devices as supplementary. The difference in the Spirit and safety that I feel is indescribable.

    What would be your #1 tip to help prepare our youth to become like the stripling warriors while at a primary age?

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому +5

      I think to get them to focus on their primary identities and to take charge of their testimony. President Nelson is pointing us that direction. I will also ask Brother Wilcox what he thinks.

    • @TheScripturesAreReal
      @TheScripturesAreReal  2 місяці тому +4

      This is from Dr. Wilcox: Read through the For the Strength of Youth guide. Discuss it together. Help them internalize those principles. We know the difference that Seminary makes and attendance at FSY conferences. Those are huge. A patriarchal blessing can give the youth a real and personal connection with God and a moment in their lives in which they recognize the Spirit in a powerful way and unforgettable way. Getting them to the House of the Lord for baptisms makes a difference. Beyond those spiritual efforts, let's get real: Too much social media and gaming is killing our youth. Manage screen time. Set some guidelines. Hope that helps.

      I agree with both answers. When I was called to teach CTR 7s, I didn’t know what to do because I had never taught children. I was released as Gospel Doctrine, which I loved because we dove deeply. I was inspired to dive deep with my primary class too. I prepare deeply, then rely on the Holy Ghost to teach us all. We focus on Christ, the Holy Ghost, agency, and covenants. I want them to understand the importance of using their agency to qualify to have the Holy Ghost to be their companion after they have received the gift of the Holy Ghost. I connect these ideas to particular scriptures. Half of my 7 and 8 year olds remember to bring their own scriptures to class. I love my primary students, and I have high expectations for them, and they rise to those standards.

      Knowing that my parents believed, hearing them pray in family prayer, and the music in primary had the most lasting impacts on me. Just knowing “I am a Child of God” gave me a sense of true identity and faith in a loving Father that carried me into adulthood and my mission.

    Side note: the fruits of peace and prosperity following the stripling warriors only lasted for ~2-4 years. While the fruits of peace and prosperity after christ visited in 3 nephi lasted ~200 years.
    🥳 🎊 🎉
    If you ever have the opportunity to ask ai, "When considering the increased rhetoric from the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints to "endure to the end", "Let God prevail", and the repeated encouragement to be "peacemakers" and "peacekeepers", which among the stories of the anti-nephi-lehies and Captain Moroni and his Title of Liberty most closely match these ideas, precepts, and principles?", check out out! 🥳 🎊 🎉
