  • Having reached Hawkesbury Junction I decided to turn back and head south to meet up with friends in Milton Keynes. This first part is the section from Hawkesbury Junction to Braunston. The weather was changeable and I got soaked through more than once but it was enjoyable nonetheless. One sad sight was a narrowboat that had sunk by Hillmorton Wharf. Fortunately, there was enough room to pass by, it's something you never want to see.

    Went through Hawksbury junction (again yrs ago)(convoy of 3)& stopped for water which was really slow, decided to press on & there were no moorings, it started to get dark, Andy in front his lights went straight up, I had no lights cos they were plugged in on the front deck & Paul behind me, his lights went to the side, it started to chuck it down with rain. We eventually moored up a long while late, soaked and exhausted, all part of the adventure 💕🦆

      Hi, I’ve been told it has now been lifted out of the water so maybe it can be restored. Other boats that have sunk have been restored and are back in the water so fingers crossed this one will be too.

    Thanks for the video. I quite liked the guitar music, though it was too loud in relation to your voice. Also a lot of wind noise or distortion. Looking forward to Milton Keynes. Cheers from Bali.

    Hi Alan, just came across your Channel, did you have a channel when you were doing van life?

      Yes I did, it's 'Globetreka travels' I was thinking of combining them but it doesn't seem that easy to do.

    Why did that narrowboat sink? Also right in the middle of the canal.

    • @TheNarrowboatNomad
      @TheNarrowboatNomad  Рік тому

      Not sure as to why it sunk and it’s a mystery to me how it ended up in the middle of the canal. I’d like to think it wasn’t the result of vandalism.

    So now you’ve been on the boat for a while, are you enjoying it as much as you thought you would and do you miss the speed of the camper van? You are heading down to my neck of the woods now 😃 So sad to see that poor sunken boat

      @TheNarrowboatNomad  Рік тому +1

      Hello Lesley, I am really enjoying the boat it feels huge after the camper van and I’m loving the slow and relaxing pace of the canals. It was sad to see the sunken boat which I am told has now been lifted out of the water so maybe it lives to cruise another day.

    Wishing you all the best in your new life afloat for as long as it lasts.
    Batteries are a major problem for boats.
    I have given it a bit of thought and came up with a plan.
    Leisure batteries usually in most cases come in three.
    Your alternator cannot fully charge them up unless you constantly cruise for 8hrs + a day that is not practical. So other ways need finding solar obvious generators the best option of course.
    So I think separately pairing up four batteries 2+2 with only charging one pair at a time.
    The Swedish Optima Blue Top batteries at 75Ah each so 150 + 150 gives 300 amp hours.
    An essential element to all of this is a power consumption audit falling in under 300 Amp hours.
    Then charging two batteries to full charge should be quicker.
    Having an obvious switching system between alternator and or solar and or look at the option of fitting a second alternator to the engine if it's at all possible.
    I am not an expert this is just an idea I don't know if it would work safely or at all.
    Safe travels take care at locks and rivers.

      Thanks for your comments they are appreciated. My set up now is 645w of solar running through an MPPT controller to two 160Ah lead carbon batteries. It is more than enough now but I also have a small generator and a Jackery Power Station. It will be interesting to see how things go as we head into autumn and winter.

    • @davidsedlickas8222
      @davidsedlickas8222 Рік тому +1

      I think those power stations are a must if you don't have a built in generator. Some are good enough to power up a battery charger. Running off solar of course, in winter is a bit more tricky with the low sun. Fixing solar panels to the roof then becomes difficult to access the low sun.
      That said Narrowboat Adventures fitted a brilliant solar panel system allowing for 90° tilt into sun direct.

    • @TheNarrowboatNomad
      @TheNarrowboatNomad  Рік тому +1

      @@davidsedlickas8222 My solar panels do tilt but not as much as 90º I think you have to accept that there is no perfect answer or setup, everything is a compromise to some extent.

    Really enjoying your chilled style, mix of 21st. century with canal history, and just pootling along. Lovely looking boat and great to be in at the start, so to speak.
    If you're thinking about future content, it would be fascinating to know about the costs of your new lifestyle, maybe some technical about your engine [sounds more modern than most], onboard systems, etc., just to get a feel for the reality in addition to what often appears to be the idyll, as you go on your way.
